"I'm bringing her to the hospital. There is something wrong with her!" Ellis says to Christopher. "Wake up Meredith!"
"I'll call an ambulance." Christopher says quickly.
"The ambulance better hurry. I have to work soon! I have an important surgery." Ellis mutters.
Just then Meredith's eyelids slowly flutter open. She sees everyone standing above her. "Mommy? What happened?"
"You passed out Meredith. We're going to the hospital." Ellis says to her daughter.
"Oh. My backpack?" Meredith mutters softly.
"Don't worry about that sweetie." Christopher tells her. You just stay lying down on the floor."
"Where's Puppy??" Meredith anxiously asks.
"Meredith, you are eight years old. You don't need to bring your stuffed animal with you." Ellis says, rolling her eyes.
"I need Puppy!" Meredith says, starting to cry.
"I'll go get you Puppy." Christopher says quickly. He runs upstairs and grabs the stuffed dog and hurries back downstairs. "Mer, here's your puppy."
Meredith hugs her puppy and smiles.
Just then footsteps are heard coming up the stairs. "That's Meredith." Carolyn says to the paramedics.
"Hi sweetie. We're going to help you feel better." The paramedic says softly to Meredith while the other gets the stretcher ready.
"Hi." Meredith whispers shyly.
"Who do you have there?" The paramedic asks.
"This is Puppy!" She says, hugging the stuffed animal. "He's scared."
"He doesn't have to be scared. Both of you will be just fine." The paramedic says. "Okay Meredith. Can we get you on this stretcher now?"
Meredith hesitates and then nods reluctantly. They pick her up and quickly put her on the stretcher and strap her to the stretcher.
"Okay let's go." The paramedic says.
"I'll follow in my car. I need to be able to get home after my shift." Ellis says.
"Mommy, please come with me. I'm scared." Meredith says with her bottom lip starting to wobble. She looks like she's on the verge of tears and will start crying any second.
"Meredith. You are old enough to go by yourself. I don't need to baby you all the time." Ellis says.
Meredith starts to cry more. "But I'm scared!"
"I'll go with you Meredith." Christopher quickly says. "Is that okay with you sweetie? Your mommy can meet us there?"
Meredith nods and clutches onto her puppy.
"And I'll follow in my car as well. I'll have to drop the kids off at daycare. And then I'll come find you Mer. You'll be just fine sweetie." Carolyn says softly and gives Meredith a kiss on her forehead.
The paramedics roll Meredith's stretcher out to the ambulance and load her into it. Christopher jumps into it and holds onto her hand. The doors are closed and they speed off to the hospital with the sirens on.
"It's too loud!" Meredith cries. "I'm scared!"
"It's okay! It's just telling the other cars to let us through so we can get you to the hospital faster." Christopher says.
The paramedic starts hooking up Meredith to the heart monitor and she whimpers as they do that. "Why's it making noises?" She cries.
"It's just telling us what your heart is doing." Christopher says.
"Okay sweetie, we need to give you an IV now. You're going to feel a little pinch."
"No! Don't want that!" Meredith says, starting to cry.
"It'll only hurt a tiny bit Mer. Just for a second I promise." Christopher says, trying to comfort her.
"No! Gonna hurt!" Meredith starts sobbing more and Christopher notices that she is breathing a lot more heavier also.
"Mer sweetie, you need to calm down. You're going to have an asthma attack." Christopher says.
"I'm scared!" Meredith says, continuing to cry loudly. She is breathing really heavily and it's getting hard for her to get air into her lungs. "C-c-can't b-br-eat-he."
The paramedic quickly puts an oxygen mask over her face and that soon helps her breathing return to normal. The paramedic quickly cleans her arm and inserts a butterfly needle for her IV while she is calm.
A few minutes later they get to Seattle Grace Hospital and Meredith is quickly wheeled into a trauma room.
"Where's Mommy?" Meredith asked. "I want Mommy!" She starts crying.
"She's just parking. She'll be here in a few minutes." Christopher says.
"Want Mommy!"
Two minutes later Ellis walks in looking all annoyed. "There's an amazing surgery that's going on and thanks to you I'm going to miss it. Unless I can be out of here in a few minutes."
Meredith reaches out for her Mom's hand but Ellis is deep in thought and ignores her.
Christopher quickly throws on a yellow trauma gown.
"So there's one more test that I would like to try. I would like to do a spinal tap on her with your permission Ellis." Christopher says.
"A spinal tap? That's going to hurt a lot! Is that necessary?" Ellis asked, looking slightly concerned.
"What's that?" Meredith asks, scared. "No pain!"
"Yes, it'll hurt but I think this is our best option. Honestly it's gonna hurt so much but we have to do it." Christopher says to Ellis.
"Do whatever you think is necessary. I-I can't be here for this. I can't watch this. I need to go." Ellis quickly leaves the room and is muttering about getting in on that surgery.
"Mommy!!!!" Meredith wails. "Come back!!!! Mommy!!!"
"I'm sorry Mer." Christopher says, sighing. "We do have to do that test on you. I'm really sorry sweetie. I wish I could take all the pain away for you."
"Want Mommy!" Meredith sobs and curls up into a ball on the exam table, clutching her puppy to her chest.
Christopher pages Carolyn to come comfort Meredith. "Mer, Carolyn is going to come sit with you sweetie."
Carolyn enters the trauma room and sees Meredith curled up into a ball on the table. "Shhh, baby girl you're okay. I've got you." She strokes the top of Meredith's head.
"Where's Mommy?" Meredith sobs.
"Mommy's busy right now. I'm right here baby. I'll stay with you." Carolyn says softly to her, running her hand through Meredith's hair.
"Carolyn, I'll be right back. I'm going to go grab the supplies I need for a spinal tap and I'll be back."
Carolyn nods. Her mind is going so fast right now with Ellis not staying with Meredith and the fact that Meredith needs a spinal tap.
"How's Puppy feeling?" Carolyn asks Meredith to try to distract her.
"Scared." Meredith whispers.
"Tell him he doesn't have to be scared. He will be fine. And then afterwards he can cuddle with his favorite person." Carolyn says.
The door opens and Christopher comes back into the room with a nurse right behind him.
"Hey Mer, what about if we show you what's going to happen on Puppy first? He can demonstrate what'll happen." Christopher asks.
"Okay." Meredith whispers.
"You know what Puppy needs before he has his test done?" Christopher asks.
"What?" Meredith asks.
"His very own hospital bracelet. He needs one so we can make sure he's him before we do any procedures on him."
"Yeah you gotta make sure Puppy is Puppy first!" Meredith says.
"Nurse Debbie, would you mind making Puppy a hospital bracelet please?" Christopher asks.
She nods and quickly does so.
"Do you want to put Puppy's hospital bracelet on him?" Christopher asks.
Meredith nods.
He gives her the bracelet and she puts it on his leg.
"He matches you now!" Christopher says. "Okay time for Puppy's test.
Christopher shows Meredith what the test looks like on Puppy. "Puppy was such a great patient Mer! It's your turn now sweetie."
Meredith shakes her head no. "No. Don't want to!" She says starting to cry.
"But you just saw Puppy do so well with it!"
Meredith hugs Puppy to her chest and cries.
"It's okay baby. I'll hold your hand. You can squeeze as tight as you can." Carolyn says soothingly to Meredith.
"No!"
"Mer please, we need to figure out what's going on with you and this will help us do that." Christopher says, trying to reason with the young girl.
"I want to go home! Puppy does also!" Meredith says with tears streaming down her face. "Wanna go find Mommy."
"Mommy's busy right now sweetie." Carolyn says sadly.
Christopher sighs knowing that anything they say still won't make Meredith want to cooperate with them for the rest.
Meredith is sitting with her back against the wall after seeing them put the giant needle into Puppy's back.
"Nurse Debbie's going to put you in the position we need you in for the test sweetie." Christopher says to her.
"No!" Meredith screams.
Nurse Debbie picks up Meredith and Meredith bangs her really tiny, ineffectual fists against her. Meredith accidently drops Puppy on the floor. "No!!! No needles! Want Mommy!"
"I'm so sorry Mer." Carolyn says with tears in her eyes.
Meredith is laid on the table on her side in the fetal position. She kicks her legs out and hits nurse Debbie with them. "Want Mommy!!!!"
Carolyn has a hold of Meredith's hands so she can squeeze them.
Meredith realizes Puppy is missing. "Puppy! Where's Puppy??!!" She wails loudly.
Christopher quickly searches for Puppy and finds him on the floor. "Here is is. He fell on the floor sweetie. He picks him up and puts against Meredith's chest.
Nurse Debbie is holding Meredith down on the table in the position they need her in this whole time.
Christopher cleans off Meredith's back with antiseptic and Meredith quickly moves her body away from him. "No needles! Stop!" She starts thrashing around on the table, trying to get away.
"Mer, you're going to be just fine." Carolyn soothes.
"No test! Want Mommy!"
"Nurse Debbie, you need to hold her down better. I can't have her moving when the needle is in her." Christopher says.
Nurse Debbie has a better grip on Meredith now and Christopher puts a sterile sheet on her back with an opening for her spine. This whole time Meredith is trying to get away but can't.
"Mommy!!!!!" Meredith sobs. "Don't want a test! Want Mommy!"
Christopher prepares the anesthesic and nods at Carolyn. "Okay Meredith you're going to feel a little sting from the shot okay sweetie?" He injects her with the anesthetic and she cries even louder.
"Noooo! Don't want test! No needles! Want Mommy!" She sobs extremely loudly.
"Okay now time for the big needle okay Mer? You're going to be just fine sweetie. Carolyn is right here. You can squeeze her hands baby."
Meredith's eyes widen in fear. "No! No! No!" She tries to thrash around on the table. "Want Mommy! Want to go home!"
"Dr Shepherd, this isn't going to work. Should we sedate her?" Nurse Debbie asks.
"Yes." Both Carolyn and Christopher say at the same time.
"Mer, you're going to take a little nap while we do the test okay?" Christopher says to her.
"Want Mommy." Meredith says in response.
"I know sweetie. I'm sorry she's not here." Christopher says. He injects her with the sedation. As she's falling asleep she mutters "want mommy."
Now that Meredith is asleep they are now able to do the test. They are able to get everything they need done. They then bring a sleeping Meredith to her room. Carolyn makes sure that Puppy is tucked in under Meredith's arm.
