Sasha Waybright limped among the endless fields of corpses. The bodies of all sorts of amphibians laid dead on the cold, uncaring soil, causalities from a battle that she had so gallantly prepared to fight for. The resistance commander was looking for signs of life among her fallen men, but none stirred. The Wartwood citizens had all been slaughtered trying to defend their homeland, the town's buildings set ablaze after their resources had been purloined. The few frogs and toads that survived had been kidnapped to use as slave labor. Those prisoners would soon find that they would be better off dead.

Sasha had barely managed to hide, preventing the newts from claiming her too. Doubtlessly she would've been tortured had she been discovered. Mutilated familiar faces of those she had spent months training with gazed at her with their unliving eyes. It hurt Sasha greatly to see them like this, and it hurt more thinking of one face that she especially didn't want to come across.

"ANNE!" Sasha yelled as strongly as she could, trying to avoid coughing from the plumes of smoke.

Interrupting this eerie, boundless plain of death came a feeble weeping sound. Sasha followed it and found Anne, lying on the earth. She was missing both of her legs. Having lost a large amount of blood, her face was an awful pale color that Sasha has never seen before.

"ANNE!" Sasha cried out in a combination of relief and chilled horror. She got on her knees next to her friend and held her tightly. "Anne, it's okay… it's okay… I'm here…" she whispered as though she was talking to a newborn.

"Sasha…" Anne cried, watery tears falling down her cheeks. "You're not hurt?"

"No, I'm fine. But you're…" she turned towards the pool of blood that had gathered around Anne's lower half. It was an ugly crimson liquid that neither of them could bear to look at.

"Sasha, I'm going to die," Anne stated. Her wavy hair was flickering blue light like a expiring lightbulb. Not even her powers could've saved them.

"Anne, forgive me. If I had just figured out how to activate my abilities or trained the troops harder, this wouldn't have happened to you!"

"It's not your fault," Anne wheezed out, "I'd never blame you." Then Anne shrieked in agony, taking Sasha aback.

"Oh God, is there anything I can do to help?"

"Sasha… kill me…"

"What?! I am not going to-"

"I'm going to die soon anyway. I won't last more than two hours like this. There's nobody around to help us. Please, if you love me, you'll end my suffering."

Sasha nodded. She had to do it, even though it would tear her apart to do so.

"Okay, I will. Anne, after I end your suffering, I'm going to end my own life as well," Sasha confessed, thinking of the sword she was carrying.

"NO!", Anne shouted, "Please, don't! Sasha, I need you to live."

"There's no life to fight for, Anne. It's all been destroyed. Everybody we know is now either dead or corrupted…"

"But I can't bear the thought of you dead. Please, Sasha. I lost everything, everyone. I just need to know that from all of this… that one good thing survived. Promise me you'll try and live as long as possible. Promise me you'll fight."

If Sasha was not dangerously dehydrated at the moment, she would've been all tears.

"Anne Boonchuy… I promise…"

"Thank you…" Anne glanced above at the smoky sky.

"I wish this didn't have to happen," Sasha bluntly stated. "I wish we could've grown old together. I wish… we could've gotten married…" she admitted, looking deeply into the oceanic blue irises of Anne's eyes.

Anne swallowed. "Me too…" she weakly said before screaming in pain again. Sasha wrapped her hands around Anne's neck, getting ready to perform the blow of mercy.

"What are you thinking about?" Sasha asked, trying to delay the unavoidable for just a moment longer.

"About… us… the two of us… the first night we spent together… I want to die thinking of something beautiful, something that will make me happy." Anne gulped, her pulse getting slower with every passing second. Her entire body ached in unbelievable pain. Anne stared at Sasha, absorbing every inch of her soulmate's face before shutting her eyes for the last time. It was the signal to Sasha that she was ready.

Sasha leaned in to kiss Anne on her lips.

"I love you…" Anne murmured.

"I love you, too."

With a twist of her powerful hands, Sasha snapped Anne's neck, putting an end to their short time together.
