Finding Our Future Chapter 20

"Hey sleepy head," he spoke as she finally stirred awake.

"Morning," she smiled dreamily looking up at him.

"Do you want me to make some breakfast?" He suggested to her.

"I hope by breakfast you mean more than just a cup of coffee," she teased smirking at him.

"I'll have you know my cooking making skills have come a long way from our high school tutoring session days," he replied pretending to be offended.

"I would like to think so. It's been seven years", she spoke flirting with him.

"Enough of your smart comments missy. Go jump in the shower and I will see what I can find in your kitchen to make", he spoke as he climbed out of her bed

"I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the breakfast," she spoke as she lifted their plates heading over to the sink.

"See you underestimate my culinary skill Hales", he boasted before coming up to wrap his arms around her from behind.

"No need to get so sure of yourself. We still need to wait a few hours", she commented to him.

"What do you mean?" He questioned curiously to her.

"The last time a guy took me out for a meal, I ended up getting awfully sick for hours afterwards", she spoke trying to gauge his ever changing facial expressions at the mention of Grant's name.

"Did you really have to spoil the moment by bringing him into the conversation," he spoke loosening his grip on her and stepping back.

"Aww are you jealous?" She asked playfully turning round to meet his gaze.

"You know I'm not jealous of that idiot," he replied sharply to her.

"You might want to tell your face that," she spoke before bursting into laughter.

"You're just so full of funny today", he spoke grabbing her and tickling her sides

"Hey stop, you know how ticklish I am," she breathed out between her giggles.

"Well, I'm not jealous and you know why I'm not?" He questioned to her.

"Why?" She asked curiously wrapping her arms around his neck.

"I have you as my girlfriend," he spoke just before he was about to kiss her.

"About this whole boyfriend/girlfriend thing. I'm a little disappointed you haven't asked me on a date yet," she spoke softly pouting her lips.

"Actually, I was going to suggest that I take you out on our first date after work", he spoke watching her face light up.

"I'm not sure tonight works for me," she replied trying to keep a straight face.

"Oh well tomorrow night then," he asked feeling a little defeated.

Seeing the look of disappointment on his face, Haley quickly replied "Nate relax! I'm just messing with you. Tonight's perfect for me."

"Great, I'll pick you up at 7 then", he spoke leaving a chaste kiss on her lips, just before getting his stuff together and heading out the door for work.

"Urgh Quinn what do I wear?" She spoke to her sister on the phone while looking through her clothes.

"Something that you're comfortable in, yet at the same time something Nathan will appreciate", she commented to her.

"Quinn, you're not helping and I don't need to feel any more nervous," she spoke picking out a couple of dresses.

"Why are you nervous? You got his jersey number tattooed on your back. The rest should be a walk in the park", she spoke but her words weren't really helping Haley to calm down.

Haley walked over and lifted her phone changing it to FaceTime calling.

"Yeah I know Quinn, I have wanted this for so long and it's finally here. I have a right to feel a little nervous," she explained not making eye contact with the screen.

"Well with what you told me, you don't need to worry about the sex issue. It seems that Nathan is definitely willing to wait on that one."

"So what's your advice then?" She asks with a questionable look.

"Just be yourself and if Nathan can't handle that, then you know where you stand going forward without rushing in", she explained trying to help her.

"Thanks, but that advice really doesn't make me feel any better. I still don't know what to wear and he will be here in 40 mins to pick me up." She groaned letting out a sigh.

"Go with the red dress and blue jacket. It's a little sexy but still casual," she suggested smiling at her sister.

"Okay thanks Quinn. I better go and finish getting ready. I will call you at some point tomorrow,"

"Have fun and don't do anything I wouldn't do," she spoke before hanging up the call not giving Haley a chance to reply.

"So where are we going?" Haley asked as she sat in the passenger seat.

"It's a surprise," he spoke before glancing over and smirking at her.

"You know I hate surprises right?" She commented to him.

"I know," he spoke laughing

"Come on just tell me," she moaned to him.

"Hales, we will be there in like five minutes," he spoke as he continued to drive.

Xx

"You're bringing me to my work?" She asked confused as they pulled up in the school parking lot.

"Don't you remember?" He asked her.

"Remember what?" She asked confused sitting in the car looking at him.

"This is the first place we came to talk after meeting again. So I thought it was kind of fitting to come back since we are officially together now,"

"That's sweet Nathan. I'm going to be honest this is a strange place to bring me on the first date," she commented to him.

"Oh no we are going somewhere else. I just wanted to stop off here first. Since this is where it all started for us" he explained before starting up the car and driving the way.

"Now the river court? Seriously Nathan, as far as first dates go this one is not working out well for you," she commented to him utterly confused even more now.

"Would you just give me a chance please?" He spoke motioning for her to take off her seatbelt.

Once they got out of the car, they walked over to the empty court together.

"Why are we here Nathan?"

"I thought it was my turn to be open and honest with you," he spoke nervously.

"Okay I'm listening," she replied giving him a reassuring smile.

"When I was in high school, all I wanted to do was go to Duke and then play in the NBA", he started to explain as they were walking along the court together.

"I remember," she spoke with a sad smile.

"Then during my sophomore year of college I ended up hurting my back in a bar fight, over a girl actually, and it ended up costing me my career. After 2 months in the hospital and another 6 months of rehab, it was safe to say that my playing days were over."

"Wow, I never knew that happened to you," Haley spoke softly continuing to listen.

"But I majored in sports management so I could still be involved in the game, and Coach K honoured my scholarship so I could still get my degree, I just couldn't actually play. But I still got to be around the team and all my teammates which helped tremendously."

"The doctor said you could never play again?" Haley questioned him.

"Not officially! I mean there is no such thing as definitively but nobody has ever come back from an injury like this." Nathan quipped.

"But your Nathan Scott", Haley confidently spoke.

"I'm not that Nathan Scott" He quickly refuted.

"What changed in that moment Nathan?" She asked him.

"I realised I needed to be a better guy. So if I ever got to bump into Haley James again. She could see the guy she deserved to see when we were in high school," he confessed looking at her.

"Now you're just trying butter me up and turn this into a good date," she commented to him.

"No I'm serious Haley. Since then you have never been far from my mind," he spoke softly.

"So why didn't you ever look me up?" She questioned him.

"I didn't want to interrupt your life. And I just figured you had someone else anyways", he solemnly stated.

"I never had anyone in my life as special as you Nathan", she spoke moving closer to him.

"So when we bumped into each other again on the plane, I knew it was fate, and I definitely wasn't going to miss my chance to make things right between us. Now here we are." He spoke before leaning down to capture her lips with his.

"Well what do we have here?" a voice spoke from behind them.

"What do you want Grant?" Nathan spoke annoyed that he spoiled their moment.

"You know you can get arrested for public sex,"

"We were hardly having sex," Haley snapped back at him.

"Maybe you need to do her Nate. It might keep her from being so snappy."

"You need to watch your mouth, Grant," he spoke stepping closer to him.

"What are you going to do about it?" He spoke squaring up to him.

"Come on Nathan, let's go. He isn't even worth it," she spoke trying to pull him away.

"Yeah listen to your little girlfriend," Grant spoke before backing away.

"Hales you're right, he's not worth it. Let's go get some food", he spoke as they headed back to the car, leaving Grant surprised that Nathan didn't fight back

Xxx

"Thanks for driving me home," she spoke as they approached her house.

"It was the least I could do after Grant tried spoiling our date and then me spilling my ice-cream on you", he replied sheepishly.

"I told you not to worry about that, but thank you for not overreacting to him though", she answered softly.

"Yeah well, I'm just sorry you had to deal with Grant", he answered before finally meeting her gaze.

"Don't worry about him, I can handle it, although it was sexy seeing you get all protective over me", she spoke with a hint of giddy laughter.

"Oh yeah?" Nathan asked with a playful smirk.

"Most definitely" Haley replied back.

"Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow", she spoke before reaching to open her side of the door.

"Not so fast Hales," he spoke reaching his arm out to grab hers.

"What?" she answered turning her head.

"My aunt always told me it was good manners to walk a lady to her door. Just to make sure she got home okay," he spoke explaining his abrupt grab of her arm.

"Honestly Nathan, I'm fine. It's literally 20 steps and I'm inside my house."

"I'm not going anywhere till I know you're safely inside," he spoke being stern with her.

After a few seconds of laughing, she finally gave in to him. He came and opened her door helping her out of the car, as they walked up the path together, stealing silent glances at each other.

"Ok this is definitely it now," she spoke with a little giggle standing on her porch with him.

"You think it's funny that I was brought up to have good manners," he spoke leaning in to tickle her.

"Nathan stop! You know I'm ticklish," she squealed trying to wriggle out of his grasp.

"I know," he replied stopping but still holding on to her waist.

"Once again, thank you for bringing me home safely and for a wonderful first date." she spoke looking up at him.

"You're welcome," he whispered softly.

They stood there in each other's arms just enjoying the moment, while Nathan was fighting with his heart on whether or not to kiss her goodnight.

"I better get inside," she spoke breaking the silence.

"Yeah goodnight," he whispered while moving a loose piece of hair out of her face.

Haley just watched his face as he leaned down closer before leaving a chaste kiss on her lips.

It took her a few seconds to realize Nathan was pouring all his emotions into the kiss, before she reciprocated and kissed him back.

"See you tomorrow," he spoke after a few minutes finally breaking the kiss.

"Yeah, actually do you want to come in for a while?" she whispered letting her heart take over her mind.

"I would love to," he replied as she took his hand in hers and lead him inside.
