Finding Our Future chapter31

After bolting from the office, Nathan made a beeline for Haley's, going through every red light and breaking every speed limit to get there as fast as he possibly could.

He pulled up outside her house, taking a second to get his thoughts together, before approaching her front door like a man on a mission.

He stood on her porch banging on the door with great force waiting for her to answer.

"Okay, I'm coming," Haley shouted at the person who was aggressively banging on her door.

After hearing her voice, he stepped back from the door and impatiently waited for her to answer.

"Nathan! Um what the hell are you doing here?" She questioned casually to him.

"I needed to see you," he spoke shoving his hands in his pockets and staring down at his shoes.

Not buying his reason for showing up so aggressively at her door in the middle of his work day, she looked at him curiously before asking him "Nathan, what's the real reason your here?"

"Brooke showed up at my office just now and I needed to make sure that you were okay." He spoke nervously, unsure how she would react to him.

"Right, so let me get his straight. You came here to check up on me because Brooke showed up at your office after being here with me." She spoke feeling all the hurt and frustration come rushing back.

"Yes, like I just said, I wanted, no I needed to make sure that you were okay after her conversation with you."

"No Nathan, you wanted to know if I'm still talking to you. That's why your here because you're scared that after my conversation with her, it's driven us further apart. You know that really hurts me Nathan. I thought you showed up here because you wanted to be here and see me of your own accord, not because you felt you needed to keep the peace." She spoke before going to shut the door.

"Haley please! Can I just come in and we can talk?" He asked putting his hand out to stop her from closing the door on him.

"No, I'm sorry. Please let go of the door and go back to work Nathan."

"Haley! Please," he pleaded removing his hand from the door.

"No Nathan. I can't deal with this right now." She spoke before closing the door and leaving him standing there alone.

Going back inside, Haley went straight to the piano and started playing some music to calm herself down.

Nathan made himself comfortable on the front steps of her porch, in the hopes that after a while she would check to see if he had actually left.

After about five minutes of soft piano playing, Nathan finally heard Haley singing, and it was like music to his ears. He could also hear the pain and hurt in her words.

Through just listening to her singing, he knew he had to do something to show her how much he still cared for her.

Hearing the vrooms of a car engine, Haley went and looked out her front window, and saw Nathan driving away from the house. In that moment she didn't know how to feel, so she went back to the piano and continued to play as it was the only thing making her feel any sense of serenity.

Haley was lost in the music, and so it took her a few minutes to realize that her phone was ringing.

"Hi Quinny, I'm actually so glad to hear your voice with everything that has gone on today."

"I'm guessing your talk with Brooke didn't go so well," she spoke more like a statement than an actual question.

"What makes you say that?"

"I just drove past your house and Nathan is sitting on your front porch in the pouring rain."

"Stop playing games Quinn. No he isn't?" She spoke not wanting to believe her or go check either.

"Haley Bob, the poor guy is sitting there in the pouring rain. Whatever happened earlier, I'm guessing is not good if he's willing to sit out in the rain for you Haley!"

"Urgh, well he did call earlier, but he just wanted to check up on me. After my conversation with Brooke, it turns out she went to his office and I think she basically told him to come see me." She explained to her.

"Well, now whose being the stubborn ass? Go let him in and sort this whole mess out. You do know the best part about a fight is the making up after right?"

"Quinn, we are definitely still a long ways from having sex, especially now. I guess I could let him in though. I don't want him getting sick on my account."

"That's my Haley,"

"Bye Quinn,"

Wanting to make sure Quinn wasn't lying first, she went to the window and checked to see if Nathan was still in fact sitting out on her front porch.

"Nathan what are you doing? It's pouring out here."

Hearing her voice, he got up from the steps and said "after you asked me to leave earlier, I went and picked up a few things, and came back and waited until you were ready to talk."

"Nathan, you can't just show up here and expect for me to be willing to let you in. It's really not that simple." She spoke feeling her stomach in knots.

"I know that Haley, but after all that went down with Brooke, we really need to talk things out. So I just thought that sitting out here would show you that I was willing to wait until you were ready." He explained to her.

"Nathan I...,"

"Haley, look my pride says yeah walk away and let you deal with the fact that you clearly feel threatened by a sexual relationship, but my heart says no, you love this girl, and even if you catch pneumonia, your ass is going to stand out here in the rain until you convince her...to forgive you.

"So please Hales, just meet me halfway"

"Fine, just come in Nathan. I don't want the neighbors knowing all my business." She spoke stepping back and opening the door wider to let him in

Walking into the kitchen Nathan slowly followed behind her.

"Here," she gestured handing him a beach towel.

"Thanks", he replied taking the towel from her with one hand and placing the bag of food on the counter with the other.

"What's that?" She questioned seeing the familiar logo on the bag.

"Earlier when I said I went to go run some errands, I went to grab some food. I didn't know how long I would be sitting out there." He spoke while drying himself off with the towel.

"Oh," she whispered softly still staring at the bag.

"Don't worry, I didn't just get food for myself, I also picked you up a few of your favorites too." He spoke seeing her face light up, which made him so happy.

"Nathan, you can't just win me over with food you know, even if it's from Karen's."

"I know that, but your still my girlfriend and I wanted to show you that I still think about you even though we're not on the best terms right now." He spoke lifting the mac and cheese out of the bag.

"It's does smell good,"

"Look Haley, I'm just asking for one hour, and then if you don't want to hear anymore from me, I'll go back to my place."

"I guess one hour can't hurt," she spoke looking over at him with a small smile.

"Thank you," he whispered softly with a smile to match hers.

Nathan just sat and watched as Haley moved the food around on her plate with her folk.

"Brooke shouldn't have said those things to you this morning. That wasn't her place." He spoke finally breaking the silence.

"Maybe not, but I did need to hear them. I needed to give her the opportunity to explain her side of the story. At the end of the day, there is always going to be her side, your side, and the truth probably somewhere in the middle." She spoke looking over at him from across the table.

"Yeah, I guess you're right." He mumbled taking a deep breath in.

"So what's your side? I did let you in so we could at least talk about things." She joked trying to make light of the conversation.

"Firstly, I want to say sorry again for Brooke showing up the way that say did. I had no idea that she was going to do that."

"I'm sorry she stormed in on you at the office," she spoke with a small smirk.

"Actually I'm glad she did."

"You are?" She questioned a little surprised by his answer.

"Yes, I have been trying to give you space like you asked for, but deep down I guess I was honestly avoiding this conversation. I felt bad for how things came out and I was worried about us talking and it turning into a bad argument. I don't want to push you away even more then I already have. I don't think I could live with myself if that happened."

"Nathan, that's my decision to make. You have to stop worrying about protecting me or hurting my feelings. We aren't seventeen anymore. I can handle it."

"Yes I know, but you're my girl to protect and I still love you even though I hurt you."

"I still love you too. I just need to know what's going on in your head."

"Haley I was going to tell you about the tape. It was never going to be a secret on my part."

"Then why haven't you told me Nathan? We have done a few intimate things together. I let you touch and taste very intimate parts of me, and that takes a lot of trust between a couple. You betrayed that trust by not telling me Nathan."

"I know, I should have told you before that. I'm sorry."

"Fuck sake Nathan, would you stop saying that you're sorry. I know you are." She shouted getting up from the table.

"Don't go, I think we are finally getting somewhere." He spoke getting up and blocking her in.

"I'm just trying to understand the reasoning behind your actions. I sure as hell wouldn't have let you be that intimate with me if I had known. Well definitely not this early on in the relationship anyways." She spoke feeling her emotions starting to take over her body.

"Don't cry Haley," he whispered trying to wipe away her tears with his thumb.

"Don't touch me," she spoke angrily pushing his hand away.

"I wasn't not telling you because I thought I could be sexual with you first and then disappoint you. Those weren't my intentions at all. When you got the tattoo and the sexy underwear, I just felt like there was no right time to bring it up. We were in such a good place together and I didn't want to spoil that."

"I get that Nathan, I do, but you already know that my past relationships and sexual experiences were just you. I have nothing else to hide, whereas your past is a lot more colorful!"

"I know Haley, but Brooke also told me about you feeling insecure about your body, and let me just say that you have nothing to feel insecure about. You have an amazing body and I'm more then attracted to you."

"Don't try and placate me Nathan, especially now after the sex tape. I can't help but feel like you're going to compare me to every other girl you've been with. That's a lot of pressure on me."

"Haley, please don't feel like that. I love you for you. For being yourself. Please believe me when I say that I'm not comparing you to anyone."

"I don't know if I can believe you now. We have a lot of levels of trust to rebuild here Nathan."

"Haley, do you remember our date on the river court?"

"Yes,"

"That night I told you about my knee, my dad, and wanting to be a better person for you."

"I remember, what has this got to do with anything now?"

"I'm getting to that. Back in high school my dad was always on my back to be better at basketball because he wanted to live his dreams through me. When the pressure got too much for me, I turned to drinking, partying, and having sex. So in a way, it was my escape from my dad for a very long time. When you started tutoring me, I started to see the guy with great potential that you saw in me, but I didn't know how to change from the old Nathan Scott. Then when I hurt my knee and was sidelined from the game, an ended up in a very dark place, that's when everything changed for me. You were my motivation to get better, and to hopefully have back in my life, but now that I do, I feel like I'm still paying for all the stupid mistakes I made in high school."

"I'm not trying to make you pay for your past mistakes Nathan. I know you're not that guy anymore. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the fact that you could be so reckless with sex, and not even bat an eyelash about all the girls you were sleeping with, whether drunk or not, and to be brutally honest it really has me questioning whether you could be that careless with my virginity," she spoke through her tears.

"No, I would never be like that with you Haley. You have to believe me." He spoke finding it so difficult watching her pour her heart out to him

"I'm just trying to understand why you felt we couldn't have had this talk sooner, and it's got me wondering if it's because your just worried about meeting your own needs and wants and to hell with my thoughts and feelings."

"No Haley! That's not what this is about, you have to believe me. I would never be that way with you. Look, I'm not good at being vulnerable but I'm trying to work on that. I've never had someone like you who cared to just sit and listen to what's going on with me. I was always just taught to bury it, but being in this relationship with you, I'm learning that communication is the key to working things out." He spoke looking at her sincerely.

She gave him a look that made him feel that she was totally disappointed in him, and he didn't know how to make things right

"I really don't know what you want from me. If it's just sex, that's not enough for me."

"Haley," he spoke reaching over to take her hand for the first time in days.

"Nathan" she whispered trying to push him off, but his grip was too tight

"It's important for me that you understand I'm not proud of the guy I was before you, and yes I have a past, and yes I've done some pretty s*** things, but I'm not that guy anymore. The hotheaded guy just looking for sex to blow off steam or escape the issues with my dad. You're too important to me, and I need you to understand that I would never take advantage of you. If and when we decide to have sex and take that next step together, it will be when we're both ready. I also need for you to understand that I never took advantage of any of those girls. They were all willing participants, after all let's not forget that I lost my virginity to your sister Taylor."

"Yes, I know that Nathan. I don't need to be reminded of it, thanks." She spoke looking up at him.

"Okay, well then you also know that she was the experienced one, not me. I just really need for you to understand that it worked both ways. It's really important to me that you understand that. I won't bring it up again." He spoke before smirking at her softly.

"I understand, but I just need to know one thing. Do you still have feelings for Brooke, or desire her sexually? I know we aren't there yet."

"No, I don't have feelings for Brooke, I honestly never did, and I most definitely don't want to sleep with her. The only person that I care about and want to be intimate with is you. There are so many other things that I haven't experienced on a deep personal level, and I want all those things with you. I hope you want them with me too."

"I do want that Nathan, but I don't want to be hurt like this again. I need you to be honest with me. I gave you my heart. If that's not enough for you, then I'm not enough for you."

"Haley, you'll always be enough for me, more than enough. So can we still be us again?" He asked looking at her nervously

"I understand so we can still be us?" he asked nervously to her.

"We still are Nathan. We just hit a rough patch, and that's okay too."

"Thank you, I was so worried you would never want to hear from me again," he spoke giving her a small smile.

"Nathan, you can always call or talk to me. Always and Forever!"

Looking at her softly he replied "Well, I best get going, it's getting late and my hour is up. It's been a long an exhausting day for the both of us, but thank you for letting me talk to you. I was worried that I might not get the chance to."

"Let me walk you out," she whispered after a minute seeing him about to exit the kitchen.

As they walked quietly back through the house together, they both reflected on the night they just shared together.

"Goodnight Haley," he spoke softly looking down at her. Watching her eyes, he took a chance leaning in to embrace her in a hug and gently he left a small kiss on the corner of her mouth.

Feeling his warm breath against her face, she was touched by his actions, as she gently leaned into him. "Mmm Nate", she softly moaned. Pulling away momentarily, she rested her forehead against his as they processed their moment together.

"Yeah so goodnight," she spoke barely above a whisper not wanting her emotions to get the better of her again.

"Right, um Haley, thank you for giving me the chance to explain myself tonight. I'll call you tomorrow if that's okay?" He spoke clearing his throat before opening the front door.

"Yes, that's okay," she spoke with a bright smile and a hint of laughter to her voice.

"Remember I love you, Always and Forever Haley James." He spoke as she watched him walking to his car.

Wow! I think this is the longest chapter to date. As always if you're reading please review.
