Chapter 2: Monster
Lisa's POV
I sat there staring at my identical twin sister's picture that I had set out on the table. It had been just over two months since she died. Two months since I'd lost her in one of the most gruesome ways imaginable. The worst part? I never even saw it coming.
I could still vividly remember the night she came knocking on my door. I was surprised to see Sarah standing there in the rain with a very heavily pregnant belly. I had just seen my sister two weeks earlier and my sister had most certainly not been pregnant at the time. It was impossible that she could be this pregnant two weeks later.
"What happened?!" I asked as I pulled her inside of my apartment quickly. She was in horrible shape. Apart from the huge stomach she was very skinny. As if whatever was inside of her was quickly sucking the life out of her. Her stomach was covered in the worst looking purple and black bruises I had ever seen.
"I'm pregnant,"
"But how?! I just saw you two weeks ago when you last came to visit,"
"I didn't want to tell you last because you would've thought I was crazy. But I met a guy and he's not exactly human. He seduced me and I couldn't resist and now-"
I shook my head. "Wait a minute. Hold up. What do you mean he's 'not exactly human'?"
"I don't know for sure because he wouldn't tell me. But I know he's not human and I did some research and I think he's a vampire,"
I would've laughed at what my sister was saying if the situation wasn't so serious. Sarah had always been a very practical person since we were kids. She only believed in what she could see. Our parents nearly lost their minds when she told them she was an atheist. So it wasn't like my sister to make such ridiculous claims. And yet the evidence that this fetus she was carrying was not entirely human was right in front of us. Pregnancies just didn't progress that fast.
Then my sister screamed. I rushed to her aide immediately. "It's okay she is just strong. That's all," a new bruise formed where it had kicked her.
"Sarah I don't think this is a good idea. I think you need to get an abortion like yesterday. I'm surprised you haven't gotten that thing out of you yet,"
"My baby is not a thing!" she shouted. "and I am not getting rid of her!"
"But look at what it-"
"She!"
"So that little monster you're carrying is a bouncing baby girl? Sorry I should go buy some pink balloons,"
"I don't know for sure but I think my baby is a girl,"
"Where is the father?" I tried not to sound as angry as I felt. As far as I was concerned the thing inside of my sister was an abomination that shouldn't exist.
"His name is Joham and I don't know where he's at. He disappeared before I knew I was pregnant. He called himself a scientist,"
I shook my head again. "Do you not see what this pregnancy is doing to you? You look like you're about to die at any second. Get rid of it. I don't want to lose you,"
In the end my sister didn't listen to Mr. Them again my sister never listened to me so why did I think she would this time? All I could do was sit by and watch as day by day the life slowly seeped out of her. It was that thing's fault. That thing was killing her and there was nothing I could do about it. My hatred for that thing grew with each passing day. Until the day I'd been fearing finally came.
I was asleep when I was awakened by a blood curdling scream. One glance at my phone told me it was just past two in the morning. I ran into the guest bedroom where my sister was and was met with a horrific sight. There was blood everywhere. There was a hole in her stomach that got bigger and bigger. I saw something crawl out. I resisted the urge to vomit.
I ignored the thing and rushed to my dying sister's side. "Please," she begged. "Let me see her,"
Of course even on her deathbed she still cared about that thing. I grabbed the murderous creature. One thing became apparent as I quickly looked over the creature. It was not a girl.
"Here,"
"Ohh," she gasped. "You're a boy. My little Lucas," she sounded like she was in worse pain than what she looked. Yet somehow she still smiled at the thing.
"Lisa I need you to do me a favor,"
"What is it?"
"Please take care of him for me,"
"Please don't ask-"
"Please. As your identical twin sister I'm asking you to take care of him for me. I know you can do it. I trust you. Make sure he knows how much I loved him. I love you to little sis,"
I couldn't hold back my tears anymore. She used to always call me her 'little sis' when we were kids because she was a whole two minutes older than me. She never let me forget it either.
"I promise I will," I reassured her.
A few seconds later she died. I cried harder than I had ever cried before. I felt something bump into me. It was that monster. That thing that killed my sister.
I picked it up and as soon as I looked into it's eyes my hatred dissolved. What I saw looking back at me was a pure soul. An innocent soul. He wasn't human but he was still just a baby. It wasn't his fault. He never asked to be created.
Now here we were. Him without a mother and me without a sister. We were exactly what each other needed. I made a silent vow that day that I was going to love him and raise him as if he were my own child. I would keep the promise I made to my sister.
It hadn't been easy at all. As soon as I told my supervisor at work that I'd gotten custody of my nephew after my sister died he fired me. My boss never hired women with children and as soon as someone got pregnant or got legal custody of a child they got fired under the pretense of you won't be of any use to me if you call in sick to take care of a child.
School wasn't any easier. I was in my fourth year of medical school and I had to drop out to take care of my nephew.
At 29 years old I was a medical school dropout, jobless, and now raising my half vampire nephew. It wasn't exactly what I had planned for my life.
I heard the sound of movement in one of movement in one of the rooms. I wasn't sure if it was Lucas or Nessie. I sighed. It had been two weeks since we found Nessie and I was still no closer to figuring out how I was going to find her family. It's not like I could just hand her over to the police.
Lucas and Nessie came out together. In the last two weeks both of them had grown a few inches. My nephew's accelerated growth rate scared me. When was it going to slow down? Or would it never slow down? Would he die an old man at the age of 15 or 16? Like dog years.
"Can I have eggs for breakfast?" Nessie asked me.
"Sure Nessie. Lucas what do you want to eat?"
"I want eggs to," he said.
While I was cooking I listened in on their conversation as they started talking about movies. Lucas was obsessed with the Jurassic Park movies and last night he insisted on watching them with Nessie. I shut the TV off after two movies. They would've stayed up all night binge watching all five movies if I would've let them.
After breakfast they wanted to finish watching the movies. At one point I saw the two of them holding hands. A thought occured to me then. Nessie had told me that her family thought she was one of a kind. Hybrids were unheard of in the vampire world. Yet here was Lucas.
So these two were possibly the only two hybrids in existence and they just happened to be the opposite sex of one another. I wondered if that's why they were so drawn to each other. I wondered what kind of effect that knowledge would have on them as they got older. If they remained friends would their relationship grow into something more? Would they feel some kind of biological need procreate to continue their species?
Perhaps I was thinking to deeply into this. Once Nessie's family was found they would come for her and we'd probably never see her again. Yet as I looked at the two of them cuddled up together on the couch I couldn't help but wonder what the future could hold.
