Father and Son
Based on a prompt by PhantomKick
Natural born halfas (EX a child with one ghost parent and one human parent) used to be common place. Now they are all gone. What happened to them?
A cold and foggy afternoon on the outskirts of town. A perfect time to visit the graveyard…at least that's what Vlad thought. Danny found him dressed in a long black coat, with a big black hat and black, round sunglasses. Some traces of white could be seen sticking out here and there. Danny almost wasn't sure if it was him, but his ghost sense convinced him otherwise. He sidled up next to Vlad and looked down at the grave he was looking at.
"You wanted to see me?" Said Danny.
Vlad nodded.
"Contrary to what you might've heard, Little Badger," he said, "We are not the first halfas."
Danny looked up, raising an eyebrow as he did so.
"Take a good look around you, Little Badger. This is the special halfa section of the cemetery. Back in my day, there was practically a halfa on almost every corner."
"Portal mishaps?" Danny guessed.
"No, these were natural-born halfas—offsprings of full-ghost and full-human couples who didn't care what other people thought about them."
"If halfas were so common way back when, how come my parents don't know about 'em?"
"Well they're half-human, obviously, like us. You can't tell 'em apart from full-humans unless you catch them transforming. Furthermore, you don't just tell someone you're part ghost: It was all on a need-to-know basis."
Danny looked back at the headstones, noticing that almost all of the former halfas had nearly the same death date.
"What happened to them?" he asked.
"Take a wild guess—the Guys In White. You think they're bad now, but they were worse then. One snitch and they purged. That's why it was important even then that halfas kept their status as such a secret."
Danny sighed. If only his parents weren't ghost hunters…
"Why have you brought me here, Vlad?"
"Daniel," said Vlad, "I want to relive the glory days–make halfas common again. You could soften your parents to ghosts in general—I'd work my mayoral magic on the rest of the town. If we took down the GIW, perhaps the good ghosts will see no reason to hole up in the Ghost Zone and live among the living again."
"That's quite a pipe dream for a Fruit Loop," Danny bemused.
"You'd probably expect me to retort that, but I agree, that plan does seem a little far-fetched and complicated. Okay, Plan B. How are things with you and Sam?"
"We're not lovebirds."
"When you do, think of me and this moment. If internet message board theories are anything to go by, a halfa and a human should still be able to have a halfa child all the same."
As Vlad spoke, Danny thought back to the time Jazz was dating Johnny 13. At first he regretted trying to break them up, but then remembered that Johnny was cheating on Kitty with her, and decided it was for the best that he did what he did.
"One more thing, Little Badger," Vlad continued, "If you see Dani, ask her how she's doing. See if she's found someone to settle down with yet. I may have seen her as a tool when I made her, but even I've been worrying about her well-being lately."
"I haven't seen the clone in a long while, but if I do, I'll ask," said Danny.
Vlad put his arm around Danny's shoulder, bringing him into a manly frenemy hug, and sent him on his way. He learned so much today and had a big future to look forward to. Some day, they thought, halfas will be mainstream.
Again.
