Prologue

June 17th 9:45pm Phineas lay awake in bed thinking about the day's events. They had created grappling suits that shot hooks from the wearers' wrists shoulders and hips, the gang including the ex-fireside girls had then proceeded to swing around town in a mobile trapeze act. But that wasn't what occupied Phineas' thoughts, what did was Isabella, the raven-haired girl from across the street. Today had felt different, whenever they had held hands during their trapeze act, she had given him such a warm smile, and he had trouble focusing on anything but her sparkling blue eyes. Phineas didn't know what it meant, she was his best friend and they had danced and sung together and held hands before, but this time felt different, it felt special and he'd gotten a warm feeling in his chest. Perhaps it had always been there. He didn't know what to make of it.

Perhaps I should talk to Ferb about it. He thought, but then he would have to put up with Ferb's teasing him about it. Still Ferb has always been better at this than me.

With a sigh Phineas rolled over to face his step-brother's bed across the room. "Ferb? You awake?"

"I am now" Ferb replied, although he talked more at fifteen than he did when he was ten, Ferb still preferred to be the man of action. "What's wrong?" He asked sitting up.

"Nothing is wrong! Why does something have to be wrong?" Phineas replied sitting up himself

Ferb just blinked.

"Fine." Phineas said with a sigh. "I can't stop thinking about today, normally I just, forget about it and focus on tomorrow but for some reason I can't."

There is more to this than just today's project. Ferb crossed his arms and frowned at Phineas. "This isn't about the trapeze, is it?"

"No, it's…. Isabella." Phineas felt his voice waver. "I- I just- whenever I see her, I get this warm feeling in my chest, and I just don't know what It means."

Could it really be happening? Has Phineas finally realised he might like Isabella as more than a friend? I mean did he built an entire haunted house just to cure her hiccups. Ferb knew Phineas would get to this point eventually he just didn't think it would take so long.

"Maybe that just how your supposed to feel around your best friend?" Phineas questioned.

So close, he's going to need a push in the right direction. With a sigh, Ferb prepared for the defensive barrage that was sure to come and asked. "What if it means you like her as more than just a friend?"

"That can't be it, I mean sure she's smart and caring and talented and…" Phineas' eyes widened slightly.

Great I've broken him. After waiting through a few minutes of silence Ferb threw his pillow at Phineas.

"Ferb, I think your right." Phineas whispered "I like Isabella, as more than a friend. What do I do now?"

"You tell her."

"What?"

"You tell Isabella you like her."

"WHAT!" Phineas practically fell off his bed. "I can't do that. It's not like she feels the same. It would just make things awkward and ruin our friendship."

Great now there are two of them. Isabella won't tell him how she feels for the same reason he won't and he is still oblivious to all her hints. Ferb briefly thought about just telling Phineas that Isabella had liked him since she was at least ten, but she had made him promise not to tell him. I could tell Isabella that he likes her though.

"Ferb, you have to promise me you won't tell her"

"I can't do that."

"FERB PROMISE ME!"

I could promise him but that wouldn't be fair to Isabella, and now he knows he likes her not telling him how she feels isn't fair to Phineas. If I promise him that, they could be in college by the time they admit they like each other. I've got to get him to tell her. Ferb grimaced, but then he had a thought. I know, I'll give him a year. Phineas doesn't do subtlety and this will put some pressure on him to tell her. Isabella deserves to hear it from him after all. "Ok. I'll give you a year."

"A-a year?"

"A year to tell Isabella how you feel. If you haven't by then, I'll take matters into my own hands."

A year? Shouldn't be too hard to tell her by then. Phineas thought about it some more before agreeing. "Ok. A year, I- I can do that."

"Great. Now give me my pillow back and go to sleep."

With a chuckle Phineas threw Ferb's pillow back. laying back down he tried to get some sleep. His last thought before he drifted off was. This shouldn't be too bad, I have a year after all.

June 18th 9:30am "Bye mamá, I'm going to see what Phineas and Ferb are doing today." Isabella said to her mother as she walked by the kitchen. Isabella was in her signature look, although it had changed a bit from when she was younger. She had faded pink jeans with a purple belt, a white sleeveless shirt and a pink button-up cardigan with sleeves that came mid-way down her forearm. A pattern of white flower petals trailed up the sleeves stopping just shy of the shoulders. The pink bow in her hair had moved around over the years, but it now sat on the left side of her head just behind her ear. Isabella had her long black hair in a large braid that started on the back of her head, it ran to the left to where the bow sat before dropping down onto her left shoulder and continuing to run down her chest.

"Ok Isa, say hello to mi yerno for me." Vivian Garcia-Shapiro called back from the kitchen as her daughter opened the front door. Vivian loved to tease her daughter about her nearly decade long interest in the boy, though she knew it was more than just a childhood crush at this point. Recently she had found that referring to Phineas as her son-in-law got a particularly entertaining reaction.

"MAMÁ!" Isabella shouted at her mother as she slipped her shoes on. "I told you to stop calling him that."

Vivian looked up to see her daughter had turned a deep shade of red. Perhaps I over did it a bit. She thought.

"Besides, it's not like he's going to notice me anyway." Isabella added quietly as she closed the front door.

"You never know." Vivian said to the empty house.

Vivian wished her daughter would just tell Phineas how she felt. She had known the boy's mother Linda for years, and trusted her to have raised her boys right. Vivian felt that at the very least Phineas would let Isabella down gently. Although she expected him to feel similar to how Isabella did even if he didn't realise it yet.

After closing the front door, Isabella took a moment to calm down. Then she crossed the road to the Flynn/Fletcher house. Isabella was at the gate that led into Phineas' and Ferb's backyard, when she heard Phineas say. "Ferb, I know what we're going to do today." She took a deep breath. Come on Isabella, maybe this time he'll notice you. Opening the gate Isabella saw Phineas and Ferb whose styles had likewise changed from when they were younger. Phineas now wore blue jeans and a honey yellow short sleeved tee-shirt with two orange stripes on the sleeves and one large orange stripe around the bottom. His vibrant red hair hadn't changed much still sitting in a messy heap on the top of his triangular head. Ferb meanwhile wore grey trousers with a beige polo shirt and deep purple undershirt. Ferb's natural green hair however now started on the back of his head just above his ears. It ran up to the top of his head, where it could still be described as scruffy but almost formally so. They were already starting work on today's project, some kind of green phone booth with a large six bladed fan on one side and a giant air compressor on the other, it had a large tube coming out the top.

"Hi, Phineas. Whatcha doin'?" She greeted him with her trademarked catchphrase.

"Oh- h-hey Isabella, we're going to make a Vacuum tube transport system around Danville so we can get around at speeds faster than the speed of sound." Phineas said without turning around. "Want to help?"

"Sure."

"Great, u-umm I'll go get some more tubing from the garage." Just like that Phineas headed round the house without so much as looking at Isabella.

Well, that was different. Isabella had gotten various reactions from Phineas over the years but never one quite like that. "Ferb what was that about?"

"You need to tell Phineas how you feel about him."

"WHAT! No, I can't do that."

"It's not fair to either of you to keep acting like this. He deserves to know."

Don't think I don't see what you did, changing the subject like that. Crossing her arms Isabella asked Ferb. "Why now? You have never pushed me to tell him before."

Ferb said nothing and kept his face stoic. "I'm giving you a year to tell him."

"WHAT? Why?" Isabella panicked. "And what if I don't?"

"Then I do something about it. Things can't go on like this."

Isabella was about to respond to Ferb with an ominous patch related threat, like she sometimes did back when she was still a fireside girl, but Phineas came back around the corner of the house struggling to carry a stack of half meter diameter tubing. With the conversation effectively ended. Isabella gave Ferb a look meant to indicate that she didn't want to talk about it anymore, as she moved to help Phineas who was still struggling under the weight of the tubing. A year, to tell Phineas I like him as more than a friend? I guess that's not so bad. Isabella figured, that since she had been trying to tell Phineas how she felt for quite some time now, that having a deadline would make it easier. I can do this, I have a year after all.
