[Alright, back for another one! Hey guys, Owen here! I know I probably didn't fulfill my promise to you all like last time and I'm sorry. Procrastination got to me, but at least you all got this brand new chapter! I should inform you all that we're getting to the end of this tale so that's something you all should keep in mind. I also decided to try my hand at doing Sky's POV here and I will be returning to Sunny's somewhat in the middle of this chapter. Hopefully, I don't mess this up lol.]
[I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter. I know it may be a bit short but most of the bread and butter went to the last one, so on with the chapter!]
If anyone had ever asked Sky what it meant to love or to be loved in return, the answer would've been a tricky one. In all honesty, Sky never understood the meaning behind love. As far as he could understand, loving someone else is much different than loving snails. He had thought the difference was rather the same as loving all sorts of baby animals, but Wren had to clarify the variables. If life has taught him anything, it was that he was ignorant and naive about certain subjects. But this never had bothered him.
Now that he was older, Sky had grown up from that scrawny Ashscales into an idol many Dragonets looked up to. Although Sky wasn't sure what it had meant to him, he did like the fact that everyone viewed him in a positive light. That and he did like the attention he got. Alas, he knew it wouldn't last long but he didn't care. One thing he still didn't understand however was the love everyone had for him. Mainly, the fans.
For some reason, Sky didn't seem to understand why he attracted a crowd of dragons whenever he was around. Mostly all of them seemed to be young and single from what Sky can pertain. At first, Sky didn't seem to mind the infatuation, as long as they respected him and Wren's space. However, it later grew into an annoyance when everyone wanted to physically touch him and tried to drag him away from Wren to do things. Sky wasn't the type to say no or let anyone down so naturally, Sky fell victim to his fans. He would usually cast a pleading stare of help to Wren but she would usually laugh it off.
"Why do they do this to me?!", Sky had asked Wren one day. The two of them were stationed in The Indestructible City at the time, due to work. That and Wren wanted to see her human family, a trio of humans named Leaf, Ivy, and Undauntable.
Wren had giggled at Sky's comedic misery, to which Sky deadpanned at the betrayal. "It's because you're famous now, Sky," his human caretaker explained. Wren was busy getting dressed and Sky had politely sheltered her away from the potential of perverted gazes. "That and you're now at the point where Dragons of all kinds are going to be chasing after you."
Chasing after me?, Sky thought with a blank stare of confusion. What does that mean?
"As in... playing tag?", Sky had inquired.
The response gave Wren a laugh. Sky didn't seem to understand what was funny and what caused his human friend to laugh.
After her fit of giggles, Wren had stepped away from the cover of his Wing. Sky couldn't help but notice how much his mother-figure has changed. Wren had grown to become a woman of something. Even though she was somewhat of a courier today, Wren still had her "Warrior-princess" aesthetic (at least that's what Undauntable likes to call it). Over the years, she had trained her limbs to become strong and had a couple of scars around her body. One of which being on her left cheek. She received that one when She, Leaf, and Undauntable stood up against Invincible Lord. That was a story for another time, however.
"Oh, Sky...", Wren had said with affection. She had reached to caress him, which Sky gladly reciprocated. Despite their ages, the one thing that hadn't changed between the two was their love for one another.
As Sky pulled Wren in for a hug, Sky couldn't help but notice that something felt off about Wren. He didn't know why... but she wasn't as close to him. That and she seemed to be protecting her torso. From what, Sky couldn't tell.
"Sky...", Wren began. "Have you ever thought about... finding love?"
"Finding love? What do you mean by that? I already found it, I guess. You, my pets, your friends, Peril and her friends, I could go on if you like."
"Not that type of love, Sky...", Wren whispered in his ear. "What I meant... What I mean..."
"Yes?"
Wren pulled back from the hug and Immediately Sky noticed the crestfallen look. Sky desperately wanted to know what was wrong with his beloved Wren but forcing someone to reveal their inner-most precious thoughts was harder than it looked. Sky understood that it is simply a part of all life, due to nature and Sky didn't want to be the bad guy. So Sky had no other choice but to respect Wren's privacy. However, that didn't mean he would stand down. Oh no, if Wren's condition was in turmoil, he would gladly lay his talon down for her sake!
"Sky," Wren spoke. There was a bit of a sobering tone in her voice. "Shortly in the future, I will be going away to take care of myself. Don't fret, I'm not leaving you forever. I will never do that to you, never. Not after what we've been through. Through so many adventures, It'll be time for me... and I guess you to take on a new adventure."
"Ooo, an Adventure?! What type of quest are we going on? Soaring through the skies to new lands? Settling feuds between two nations? Finding the latest, cutest, baby animals to add to my bestiary?"
That gave Wren a small, humble chuckle. No doubt Sky knew it was to his naive nature. At least Sky managed to wipe away Wren's sadden look. Still, the feeling of worry lingered within his stomach.
"You'll soon see, Sky," Wren answered at last. She didn't say much after that, from what Sky noticed. Immediately afterward, Wren needed to leave. Sky had asked where, but Wren answered subliminally. The only valid answer Sky got out of Wren was something about Undauntable. Sky wasn't sure what the King of The Indestructible City had anything to do with Wren, but maybe he would never know.
As Sky began to stroll through the streets, It was here he realized that Wren didn't answer his question.
Maybe... maybe I am supposed to figure that out? I guess I should find the answer myself...
For the remainder of the day, The two drakes had enjoyed much of their time together. Sky had packed lunch for him and Sunny to share, even though Sky didn't eat meat, like how Sunny did. He had flown over to The Scorpion Den to procure lizards that Sunny likes to eat, although he was initially worried about a lot of things. For starters, The prospect of a weak, defenseless, sickly-pale Skywing in a city full of vicious Sandwings. He knew the Sandwing Succession War had been over for a great deal of time, but his time as a slave had left him with a great fear of the Sandwing Kingdom. He knew that not all Sandwings were bad, but the memories of his imprisonment were still fresh in his mind. Secretly, he feared Sunny's mother, Queen Thorn and he had hoped he didn't run into her anytime soon.
The two dined upon their respective meals; Sky had bought along with two salads, one being fruit and the other being leafy greens, and a new human dish called Bread. As for Sunny, she was surprised that he knew of her diet. She had asked Sky about it and how he knew and Sky truthfully answered it, explaining that he asked his sister. Sometimes on his day off, Sky would visit his sister at The Jade Mountain, and the two would discuss anything that came to mind. Sky didn't know why but he had heard what Sunny liked. At this point in his life, he had come to accept the diet of other dragons. While he managed to face his fears about this subject, the prospect still made him quake in fear.
It was still going to be a long road for Sky to get over with. Sky knew it himself, but if there was something Sunny had taught him, it was to have faith, even when things seemed bleak.
That was something Sky deeply admired about Sunny's character. He wasn't aware of it at the time, but he still couldn't believe that he missed out on witnessing the Sandwing War. Sky couldn't help but chuckle at the idea; He found it rather humorous that all this time Sunny and her family were playing heroes and stopping a war while Sky and Wren were enjoying their freedom together. When he had his sister, Peril had told him all about it and why the Academy was created. That was another thing Sky liked about Sunny; Her ideas were amazing!
Just think..., Sky thought as images of smiling faces of Dragonets of all shapes and sizes ran amok in the great stone foyers. Each Winglet chatting amongst themselves, laughing with their friends, and young humans playing with all of them. And Snails of all colors were being admired behind a glass panel! A glorious slice of heaven, in Sky's taste.
Then, he saw it. In the middle of it all, Sunny stood to the pale aura of the sun. The glow of her golden scales depicted her as something far from ordinary. She smiled at the blissful scene. From what Sky guessed, she was making sure everything was going all right, underneath her watchful eyes. Those beautiful, emerald jewels of eyes. The way they matched her golden scales...
He didn't know why, but for some justification he found Sunny to be the most gorgeous creature ever known. Something about her, from what Sky could understand was enough for him to view Sunny in a different light, enough to distinguish his odd fascination with her was something entirely different, far from snails. He didn't know what Sunny did to him, but she was... prepossessing.
Everything about her was just simply divine. Her Golden scales glimmered as if she were a precious snail shell he wouldn't dare touch. Her eyes were incredibly gorgeous, so filled with light. Her petite size was something Sky found adorable. Most dragons were bigger than her but she had to be one that closely matched his size. That was a reassuring thing for him, considering Sky knew that his tribe was much more sizable than his pathetic stature.
The final thing Sky found amazing about her was her strength of character. Sunny may be small, but she held the biggest heart. She may be sweet as a cinnamon bun, but she had a fierce tenacity. Full of bright, shimmering hope that shined like the sun but strong as the stinging of the warm rays. To many, she was a hero. To others, she was a sister. To Sky, she was beauty unseen.
And there she was, right in front of him was the extravagant dragoness in all her glory. Sky didn't know whether it was his luck that made Sunny want to come or chance. Whatever the case, he still couldn't believe she was here, in front of him!
"Sky, why are you looking at me like that?"
Sky snapped out of his daydream. Sunny was working on one of her roasted lizard's kabobs and she just managed to spot his dreamy stare.
Oh no, she spotted me!
Sky didn't know how to answer her question. There was the possibility of lying but that wasn't his style. Besides, he didn't know how to lie. Wren had taught him the importance of honesty and her lesson had been ingrained in his brain since. He could lie, but that would only cause problems in the long run. However, Sky didn't want to tell Sunny what was on his mind. Yet.
Sky decided it was for the best to improvise for the time being. He would somewhat be lying but maybe he could apologize and hope Sunny would forgive him.
"Sorry, I was thinking about how nice you were to come with him today. You didn't have to if you didn't want to, but I'm glad you did."
Sunny replied with a sweet smile. The one Sky adored. So cute...
"Thanks, Sky. I'm really happy I did arrive today."
Something about her mark felt... off. Something is wrong. Oh no, did she detect my lie?! Snails sake, I hope I didn't do something wrong!
"Hey, Sunny...," Sky began. "Are you ok?"
"I'm alright!", Sunny snapped suddenly. It took a moment for her to register what she did, but Sky immediately knew the answer. Truthfully, the sudden remark didn't affect this point. Living with Wren had taught him to deal with whatever comes his way, including verbal disagreements.
Before Sunny could have the chance to apologize, Sky decided to be the first to break the mold. "Sunny," he began calmly. "Something is upsetting you. I can tell from what your body language is giving off. I want to help you. I don't like when any one of my friends is hurt or sad. So please tell me what's wrong. Maybe I can help."
Sky settled aside his bread, in which a pair of squirrels came. Normally, Sky knew he would be obsessed at the sight of them but this wasn't the time. Right now, his priority was figuring out what was wrong with Sunny. He promised himself that today would be a good day.
Somehow, his speech didn't budge. If anything, it made Sunny a bit more protective. Her appearance was now much more recognizable. She looked... depressed.
Something was wrong.
"Sunny... are you sure you're alright? You haven't touched your lizards. Do you need an-"
"Sky...", Sunny began. Sky noticed that Sunny was now vastly quiet. Her tone of voice sounded a bit cold too. She placed her kabob away and begin to wrap her tail around her talons. She was also shifting her weight around as if she was a precious snail on the verge of falling out of a leaf.
Oh no! no, no, no, no, no!! Quick, Sky, think of something! What would Wren do?! What would Peril do?!
Sky didn't know what he had to do, but he knew he had to think of something to help Sunny. Seeing her like this was just too painful for him to bear. He longed to see her smile, to see her be the bright ray of light he had come to adore. Was there any hope left in him? For them?!
I could try it, but how will she react? I hope I don't make her mad. That's the last thing I want. Only one way to find out. Great Snails and Turtles, please help me!
Sky knew it was his only option but it was his best bet. He wished it would work.
Slowly, Sky approached Sunny. She looked like she was on the verge of crying. He hesitated for a good moment but decided it was now or never. Taking a quick breather, he wrapped his wings and talons around Sunny's shaking body. Sky hoped he was doing this right and wasn't hurting her.
"Hey, It's ok," he whispered in her ear. "It's going to be ok. If you want to cry, you can cry. I like to sometimes cry, wh-"
It was at that moment, that Sunny finally broke. The dam that was holding back her emotions finally cracked underneath his hold. Being his oblivious self, Sky wasn't sure what exactly he did that made Sunny burst, but he hoped Sunny was ok.
Letting her wail in his arms, Sky began to rock her slowly. He remembered Wren would do this whenever he was younger. Back then, he was vulnerable to fear and Wren was always there for him. Now, it was his turn. This time, he was going there for Sunny.
After a few minutes of crying, Sunny slowly calmed down. She still laid within Sky's grasp, but at least he helped managed to calm her down.
"Are you... ok?", Sky softly asked, concerned.
Sunny took some time to collect herself, mentally.
"I'm ok...," Sunny answered. "I'm sorry for letting you see me like that. I hate it whenever someone I know sees me cry. I feel... weak whenever I allow my emotions get the best of me. You must think I'm weird."
"What?!", Sky exclaimed out of shock. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. The legendary, brave, Sunny, the princess of The Sandwing Kingdom and a member of The Destiny Winglet, believed she was weird in front of him?!
Yep, it is my time to rise. Time to be a good friend!
"You're not weird!", Sky quickly answered. "You're amazing, just the way you are! You're cool as well! I don't think I will ever have the guts to challenge the former Sandwing sisters, but I'm glad that you did. You're the bravest dragon that I know, Sunny! And I admire you for that! If anyone is weird, then you are thinking of the wrong person. I am the weirdo here."
It was then Sunny stopped to gaze at him. Again, Sky didn't know what he had done, but he hoped he didn't make anything awkward between the two. Sky immediately decided it was time to resume his lunch.
But as he began to shift through his satchel for any more snacks he had, he heard Sunny call his name. He lifted his head at the right second as he witnessed Sunny's speech.
"Sky!", Sunny began. She was bristling, full of flair. "You are not weird!! Don't you ever dare say that!! Who cares if you don't look far from the average Skywing?! Who cares if you can't breathe fire?! Sure, you may not have what any Dragon has but you do have one thing that makes you, you! Your love of living creatures, your relationship with the humans you befriended, your pet collection, and your warm-hearted generosity make you... Amazing!!!"
Sky couldn't believe what he was hearing. It seemed like Sunny was back to her normal self, but seeing Sunny in all of her fury was a sight to behold. He wasn't scared by her, but the glare she had reminded him of the Sandwing General he was formerly enslaved to. That and it reminded me of the look Wren gave to other human girls when they tried to flirt with Undauntable. Sky would always tease Wren about it, but it did make him wonder what was going on between the two humans.
"You think so?," Sky asked. "I don't mind much about my condition or my Ashscales, but at least I like to look on the bright side of every situation."
"Ashscales?" Sunny shot a quizzical look.
"A condition," Sky explained. "It's what they used to describe me, since I lack fire."
"Who's they ?" Sunny raised a brow.
"Everyone that I have met. Well mainly, The Skywings. Queen Ruby learned of my existence after Peril told the story about my adventures. Truthfully, I didn't want The SkyWing Kingdom to find out about me, but I figured it would only be a matter of time that everyone would hear about it. It sucks as a salt ring around snails, but that's how the shell slides off."
Sunny started to inspect Sky. "I don't exactly get it, but I don't think it's not a nice term."
Sky shrugged. "I can understand. Yes, it's basically a term that tells everyone I can't breath fire but it's not like anyone can call me a SkyWing either. The SkyWings are these big, red dragons that soar through the skies like a God but look at me. I sometimes get mistaken for a Sandwing, due to the color of my scales. Can't day I blame them but I rather just be me. Just Sky, a lover to Snails."
That last remark about himself was enough for Sunny to smile. Sky wasn't sure if it was a smile out of pity or happiness, but it didn't matter. It was enough for Sunny to smile.
She sighed. "I'm sorry."
"For what," Sky asked. He had just noticed a butterfly floating about.
"Well, for ruining lunch. I wanted today to be a great day for you and me, but I guess I spoiled the mood."
Sky shook his head. "No you didn't! You needed to get all of those negative feelings out of your system. I can understand that. It happens to me and Wren. It happens to everyone. You shouldn't make yourself the bad guy here. If anything, those cute squirrels are the bad guy!" Sky laughed at his last remark.
Sky pointed to where the cute, fuzzy creatures were at. Sitting nearby to a tree trunk were two red-fur colored squirrel, munching away at a small loaf of bread.
"Sometimes, we just need to let our inner-most emotions. Within us all is our beast, and sometimes the best way to tame the animal within is to let that wild side out. Kinda like how human moderate their thirst of alcohol, you know?"
Sky turned his head to look at his Golden scaled friend. Sunny had moved from her spot and now sat right next to him, closely. She looked at him in amazement.
"I'll be honest," she began. "I never expected you out of all drakes to say that. Starflight, probably but never imagined you to say something poetic."
Sky smiled at her amusingly. "I guess my adventures have taught me a lot. Must've gotten some wisdom during those days!", he laughed. "If anything life has taught me, it is to enjoy the beauty of it. We all are the same as humans after all."
"The same? What do you mean?", Sunny asked.
Sky closed his eyes and remembered his first memory of life. It was vivid and a bit graphic, not the humblest of fond memories. It was about his mother, Kestrel. He didn't know whether he would die as young as he was or if she was truly trying to save him. Whatever the case was, he was grateful for one thing: Wren. If it wasn't for her finding him in a bush, chances were that he would already be dead. If it wasn't for her, he wouldn't have developed his deep love for nature and his human friends.
The vision changed as he remembered what Wren had told him about humanity, after stopping Undauntable's father. The violence they contained within themselves and how destructive they could be, to themselves and the world around them. The anger, the psychotic rage, the bloodshed, the hatred, the malice. All of it was deeply embedded in his memories. It was at that moment their species were just the same. Dragons and Humans were all alike, yet they were both ignorant to realize that.
"Sky?..."
"Oh, sorry. I guess I should explain it all. Fair warning, it's a bit long and gruesome. You sure want to hear it?"
"Who wouldn't reject a story from the great adventure Sky?!"
The Indestructible City had changed a lot ever since the first proclaimed "Lord Of Pyhrria" was stopped. The first thing that Undauntable has done since taking the throne was to help rebuild the city politically and physically. With help from dragons and men, their war against Undauntable's sadistic tyrant of a father was over, Although many casualties happened. It didn't help that it was Undauntable who killed his father, with help from Wren. Sky pitied him that day and to his surprise, Wren had comforted him. Most likely as a way to repay him, since he helped free her from his dad's clutches.
At least Undauntable helped turned the whole city around. For starters, he accepted immigrating refugees of all kinds of cultures to live in his city. Possibility and Sanctuary also decided to share their resources with the injured settlement and with help from Wren's teaching of Draconian, Dragons, and Humans all came together as one. An alliance was struck, whether it was for better or worse. With help of Undauntable's political power, Leaf and Ivy's hearts, and Wren's understanding of the Dragons, Sky had watched the city undergo from a cruel, cold city that rejected everyone to a haven for where all kinds of people (and drakes) could live in harmony. Cliché is a fairytale, but Sky was more than happy that the humans and dragons could build a healthy relationship between them.
As for Pantala, that was a story.
One thing immediately Sky wanted to happen was for the Humans of Pantala to be given the same opportunity as Pyrrhia did. Knowing that the Pantalans didn't have the same, equal opportunities as the Pyrrhian did. If The people of Pyrrhia could be given the chance to establish peace and maybe advance as a culture, The Pantalans deserve the same treatment. The whole dragon hierarchy was a mess over there and their scavenger inhabitants were decaying away, on the verge of extinction.
Keep in mind, this was coming from him, a SkyWing of all winged lizards.
He had pleaded his request with Undauntable privately and he had promised that he would first gather a team of humans who would be willing to not only help The humans of Pantala but also teach them everything if he and Wren could find a team of dragons to do the same. Sky agreed immediately.
And So The DragonWing Express was formed. With help from Winter, Sky and Wren were able to create the first battalion of Dragonriders. It wasn't an easy task at first. The first squad had been SkyWings, recent prisoned inmates who came from The SkyWing Kingdom and had no clue what to do with their lives. It was no secret that SkyWings were probably the grumpiest, meanest race, but these new former Criminals were truly salty. Probably due to the fact, that Queen Ruby had made sent them as punishment. But with some help from his sister, Peril's disciplinary skills were enough to shape the young drakes, almost as if they were Guards.
Sky had watched his sister act as somewhat like a drill sergeant. It was honestly scary, in Sky's opinion. He had heard that Peril took on the mantle of many jobs at the Jade Mountain Academy and The SkyWing Kingdom, acting as a personal Vanguard to The Royals and Keeping the students in check, mainly the SkyWings. He had also heard that she was a teacher of the "Advanced Arts Of Defense", basically teaching dragons how to fight, and a Lunchtime Chef. Quite the roles she played at her job, but Sky knew she loved it.
"When did you become so... disciplined ?", Sky had to ask. His sister was carefully observing the SkyWings, making sure they were following her instructions.
"I served The SkyWing Kingdom," Peril began. "I can't say what job I had at the time, trust me. Someday I will tell you, but that's as far as I can tell you. Other than that, Tsunami and I exchanged advice to each other, like Warriors."
"It's no worries about The SkyWing Kingdom job, but I never imagined you like this. And aren't you and Tsunami-"
"I know what you're going to say, Sky. Yes, it is true we may see each other at odds sometimes, but I consider her my friend, maybe even a family member. She may not see me that way, but she had come to accept me as an ally."
"Wow Peril, I would never you being friends with The SeaWing Queen! Ooo, maybe you can be best friends!"
His sister smirked. "I hate to break it to you, buddy, but I can't say we're friends. I mean, I would love to be, considering her little brother Turtle is like a little brother to me, second to you. She's a great warrior, one I hold much respect for. I doubt that I will ever her respect, but someday I want to ask her for a match."
Sky's eyes widen. "Wait, you want to challenge for the throne?! Isn't that impo-"
"Challenge Tsunami for the throne?!", Peril laughed. "Sky, Sky, Sky. This is Tsunami we're talking about! Like I have the guts to challenge a Dragon Of Destiny. Besides, I don't even know how to run a Kingdom, let alone have a mind for logistics. But... I wish for the both of us to see other as equals warriors, maybe even as friends. That's why I want to have a duel with her. The best way of understanding someone after all is best by sharing pain, physically and mentally. But the day of our dual has not come yet. Until then, I am content."
Sky couldn't help but smile in amazement at her. It still amazed him how far the two of them have grown up, mentally and physically. He had learned that his sister faced a lot of hardship growing up in the tribe and was on the verge of becoming insane. But if it wasn't for her boyfriend, she wouldn't be the sister he had grown to adore. That was why Sky also held Clay in such high regard. He also viewed the big Mudwing as a big brotherly character, someone he enjoyed being around.
For the next few days, Wren and Sky helped train once former Criminals on parole and gave them all a new purpose, a new goal to strive for, and even a place to belong. It was funny to Sky how a race of grumpy, red, dragons changed their perspectives on humans. Vice Versa to the humans. The first battalion soon came to embrace their new, clean slates and even their partnership, despite the SkyWings were too prideful to admit.
Out of that first Battalion was Rock and Cloud, who had come a long way as a duo. Each of the former two were victims of war; Cloud having seen the lives lost of his friends back in the SandWing Succession War and Rock losing his former family when Blister decided to raid Scavenger settlements. The two didn't get along at first but eventually found solace in one another's company. Later on, they would help Sky and Wren teach newer recruits of becoming couriers. And as promised, Undauntable sent them across the sea to Pantala to help them establish peace between their species. Cloud and Rock lead the expedition and were successful.
As Sky walked around the busy streets, he saw the blissful looks of everyone, he still couldn't believe how much everything has changed. But it also reminded him of how much he needed to work on. The first thing he needed to do was keep improving. He wasn't asking for anything to be perfect in this world, but life taught him that as long as humans and dragons exist, war will always wage on their hearts. He was no warrior like Peril or Wren, but he liked to consider himself a stoic. There was some hatred still alive within a few hearts of Scavengers and Dragons alike, but he knew the time will help ease their hearts alike.
He hoped.
"... And that's why I believe it is my destiny to help build the relationship between us dragons and humans."
"That's a noble goal, Sky. A noble one. It reminds me of why I created The Academy."
"Guess we're not so different in that retrospect."
"You could say that again..."
Sky giggled at Sunny's comment. It was mid-afternoon evening by the time Sky was done telling a couple of his stories. Sunny had listened intently as he began explaining. Sky was laying down on his back while Sunny decided to pull a bold move. Sunny had decided to lay her head on his chest as if he were a pillow. Sky didn't mind it, although he had a mental freak out about it.
"Hey Sky...," Sunny started to say. "I just want to say thank you."
"Hmm? For what?"
"For everything that you did today. You made today a really fun day, not to mention that you helped me through a mental breakdown. I'm sorry that I made you go through with that, but I'm happy that you comforted me through that."
Sky smiled at her. "It's what I do best. Not trying to sound full of me, but it's what I would've done if I have see anyone that I cared for had to be in that pain. Wren did the same whenever I was down, although I never cried. Now that I think about it, I never did cry before. Oh well."
"You never cried before?", Sunny asked flabbergasted.
"As far as I know," Sky shrugged. "Sure I was depressed about lacking fire and doing all sorts of neat things SkyWings could do but I grew to accept it. Say, I don't mean to change the Snail shell, but I wanted to ask you something."
"Sure. What is it?"
Sky took a deep breath. "I should let you know what I am about to ask is going to be a personal one. You don't have to answer it if you want, but I would like to know if there is anything I can do. What was the whole deal of crying? Were you OK?"
Sky could sense that he had hit a nerve in Sunny's system. But he wanted to know her response. Maybe there was something he could help with her. He did forewarn her, however.
Just when all seemed a bit lost, Sunny broke the silence and took a reassuring breath.
"You promise me you won't tell anyone?", She asked.
Sky nodded. "For the love of Snails, crabs, turtles, and all sorts of cute baby animals."
Sunny took another deep breath. She seemed like she was mentally preparing herself.
"I'm scared, Sky."
"Scared?", Sky asked. That's something new. Never imagined her to be the scared type.
Sunny wrapped her wings around herself. "I'm just scared of losing them, my family. My best friends, my Winglet. I grew up with them and I wanted all of us to be together forever. But it seems like they want to go off and start their own lives together."
Sky quickly realized what this was about. She's talking about Clay, Tsunami, Glory, and Starflight! So this was what was scaring her. Poor Sunny, she must be very sad. I would too if I couldn't see Wren all the time.
Sky wrapped a wing around her. He would do this to anyone if they needed the comfort and that time was now. Sunny needed him and he was sure to give her the comfort she needed.
"Sunflower," Sky said affectionately. He lifted her chin gently so their faces would meet. "They won't leave you, they can't. Not after all that you guys have been through. I'm sure they-".
"You don't understand, Sky! They are going to leave me. Tsunami and Glory, they're queens now, and none of us are going to be seeing them often, because they want to start families. Your sister wants to run off with Clay and they want to have dragonets. They want to start a family of their own. So do Starflight and Fatespeaker, once they help Deathbringer rebuild the Nightwing Kingdom. We're all going our separate ways and there is nothing I can do. I'm trying my hardest to keep my family in check but every time I do, it always feels like they're slipping out of my grasp! I don't want them to forget about me! I just want all of us to be tog-"
It was then Sunny finally broke. Her voice wobbled away into sobs of tears and Sky quickly rushed to her aid. He pulled the petite hybrid into a hug. She wailed into his embrace and Sky allowed her salty tears to melt away at his scales. Sky didn't know how much baggage she had been carrying, but he could tell she had been holding this in for so long. The best way to help was to provide emotional support to her.
As the sun gradually came down, Sunny had finally let go of Sky and sniffed away the last of her tears.
"You ready to talk about it?", Sky asked. "I want to help."
"How could it be helped?", Sunny asked sorrowfully. "It's too late. It won't be long before they all leave."
"Who says they are leaving forever? I'm positive they won't forget about you, Sunny. I know that. You're unforgettable, that's for sure."
"Flattery won't help", Sunny whimpered.
"Although I appreciate the thought."
Sky slyly smiled and wagged a talon. "Tsk, tsk, tsk. My dear Sunny, that's where you forgot about something important. The answer is in the question. I want to help you and I think I got a solution."
Sunny raised a brow, skeptical. "I don't think this problem can be solved, Sky."
"Not if I have anything to do with it! Have a little faith, Sun. Listen, why don't you take a chance and hear me out? If I promise to help you, do you think you could help me out with my problem?"
Sunny smirked. "You have a problem too? Now I am intrigued. Alright, fine. I'll give you a chance."
"That's all I can ask. For my love of pets, I think I got a solution."
"Already?"
Sky nodded. "The best way to keep your family together is this: A dragonet sitter!"
"How is that going to work, Sky?"
"For one thing, the first thing many young parents will need is a babysitter. While the parents are away at work or just need some time apart, they'll need a sitter. Sure it may be agitating at times but it's well worth it. Seeing young dragonets grow, it's such a great experience. You see it all the time whenever you are at the Academy. Besides, I'm pretty sure your siblings trust you more than anyone else."
Sunny sat in thought for a moment. "That does sound like a simple solution. Do you think it could happen?"
"It may or may not happen, but I'm sure your friends will come to realize that they might need a talon or two for help. Besides, if you ever desire dragonets of your own, you can get a headstart by learning how to handle them. Only time will tell. And I want to help. If they do decide to give you the role of dragonet sitting, you're not alone. You got me."
"You don't have to volunteer something you don't want to do, Sky. I appreciate your optimism, but you don't have to involve yourself in any of my problems."
Sky couldn't help but laugh. "And be a bad friend? Not a chance. I suggest it to you and I aim to fulfill my promises. Sunny, I care for you. Just like I care for Peril and Wren, I admire you. You are my best friend, my first dragon friend. If it wasn't for your strength, I wouldn't have met my sister. For Snails, you gave me the strength to help stop Invincible Lord. Sunny, you are my hero."
Sky couldn't believe what he was seeing. Despite the sun coming down, he could faintly see the blush on Sunny's face. She's so cute...
Even better, Sunny suddenly embraced his in his hold tighter. "Sky, you are something else. Do you know that?"
"What do you mean by, 'Something Else?'", Sky asked.
"What?", Sunny exclaimed bewildered. "You certainly don't know, don't you?"
"I guess not. I'm more like, 'Where are the snails?!'"
That managed to get a laugh out of her. And that also made Sky laugh alongside her. However, the moment didn't last long as the growling of thunder made its presence clear. Startled, the two of them looked up, and to their sudden realization, it was nighttime.
Not to mention, A storm was about to rain down upon them.
Immediately, Sky organized what was left of their little picnic and suddenly grabbed Sunny. She was surprised by his action but strangely didn't object to it. Eventually, he found a cave nearby and the pair got to work setting up camp. Sunny had kindled up a tiny bonfire for warmth and Sky placed his belongings next to Sunny. "If you are still hungry, there are some snacks for you. I made sure to pack a big lunch in case you were starving."
"Thank you, Sky."
"No problem."
It was a good thing for Sky that he found that cave. The rain had started to fall and it was extremely lucky he had found the cave in the nick of time. Nature's downpour was a heavy sight to behold.
"Look at all that water!", Sky exclaimed happily. "Ah, rain! A refreshing take on the scenery."
"How are you happy? It's raining. I can't go home now, in midst of a storm. I hope they aren't worried sick about me."
"They'll be alright. I'm sure they will understand, considering the weather."
"I hope so," Sunny said. She sat next to Sky. Once again, Sky lifted a wing, for protection against the cold wing. That and he didn't want Sunny to get wet.
"I like the rain," Sky explained. "It's good to have a little water. The earth will be revitalized by its aquatic touch. Plants will grow and provide food for animals. Cute, precious creature for me to enjoy and respect. This world is so beautiful, so full of diversity. What an amazing life we live!"
Sunny didn't say anything about his remark, but Sky knew she was smiling at his comment. The two sat in silence, watching the storm brew out of the remainder of the rain it contained.
"Sky...," Sunny began.
"Yes?"
"You still haven't told me about your problem."
Oh, Snails and Slugs! I forgot about that!
Sky awkwardly turned out to face the elegance of Sunny's teasing smirk. This time, she had the sly look written on her pretty face. As much as he loved the look, Sky knew he was at her mercy of her. He had only hoped she would forget about it but too late for that.
Well, I guess I have to tell her. I hope she doesn't think bad about me.
"Sky... are you ok?"
He knew he was caught with the look on his face. Now Sunny was concerned. He was not going to be left off the hook now.
"Are you... sure you want to hear me out?", Sky asked softly.
Sunny pressed her body against him. The warmth of her gold scales was enough to relax his nerves. Sky craned his head down and looked at her. Sunny now rested his skull upon his shoulder.
"You don't have to, but I want to know. It's about Wren, isn't it? Did something happen between the two of you?"
"Yes," Sky affirmed. "Do you still want to know?"
"If only you can tell me..."
Sky smiled. "Fair enough."
It all transpired after Invincible Lord's defeat.
Sky flew across the Claws Of The Clouds. It was a clear early morning, crisp with cool air. Sky closed his eyes and allowed his wings to guide him through the air. The morning breeze was strong enough to lift his skinny frame, so he had no worries. Nothing was standing in his direction, as the two were just on an adventure, with no particular location in mind. Just enjoying their freedom together. Peaceful silence.
That is... until Wren had made an accident.
At first, it was a cough, and Sky had mistaken it for Wren eating a bug by accident. He had almost laughed. That hadn't happened since Wren first took the reins of learning how to ride a dragon. Well, it was more like just holding his neck, but the same principle occurred all too well. It was all quiet after a while and Sky concluded that Wren managed to shake off her cough. It all seemed well until Sky felt the splatter of vomit paint on a side of his face.
Immediately, Sky almost freaked out until he realized that he was in control and decided to land. He rushed down to the land below them and landed near a creek. Sky didn't know where he was, but he didn't care. Wren was his priority.
Immediately, he fished his human mother off of his back and gently placed her next to the river. Wren looked sick to her stomach and a waterfall of the ghastly greenish mush gagged out of her mouth. For a tiny creature, Wren's sudden vomiting scene was enough to make Sky feel queasy. Sky didn't know what was going on in Wren's digestive system but he had hoped it wasn't something she ate.
Not sure what to do, Sky carefully lifted her hair and gently rubbed her back. Wren was still processing emptying her gut. She kept barfing out the content of what Sky assumed was the remains of her dinner.
A few minutes later, Wren hacked out the last remnants, and Sky handed her water canteen. "Wash out your mouth," Sky immediately advised. "I can imagine you not liking the taste."
Silently, Wren gratefully took the leather container and begin to gargle her mouth. As she began to clean herself up, Sky decided it was for her best to give her some space and took the opportunity to clean his face.
Thereupon a moment of rest, Sky immediately began to question Wren's condition.
"What happened? Are you ok? Let's go get you checked out?!"
"Sky, Sky, Sky! At Ease!! I'm fine!! We-" Wren's face had suddenly turned green and once again, she emptied her stomach. Knowing something was wrong with her, Sky quickly gathered Wren in his talons. He couldn't afford her falling ill. So he took off in the sky. Leaf and Ivy might know what was wrong with her. Wren's older brother knew her adequately and Ivy was a girl. Maybe this was sometimes female humans did, Sky wasn't sure.
Sky had made sure that the ride was short and sweet. As much as he wanted to keep flying at a high altitude and a high velocity, he couldn't risk Wren's life. He had vowed to do anything in his power to protect her, as she have done the same in the past. Now was his time to shine.
Slipping through the large gateway (Undauntable expanded the barriers tremendously), Sky began to prowl his way through the crowds of humans and dragons. A few people managed to recognize him, but Sky didn't have the time to consult with his fans. Wren's life could very well be hanging in the balance.
"Leaf, Ivy!!", Sky had screamed when he approached their home. Leaf and Ivy had made themselves a home within the city after Leaf had decided to grow a pair and asked Ivy for marriage. Long story short, Leaf and Ivy lived happily ever after, all that jazz.
The door opened up to reveal what was full-grown Ivy, in all of her glory. She had managed to cut her hair short for some reason and was busy with what appeared to be tailoring. Ivy was known to take the odd Job here and there, as she was currently studying to be a teacher. She wanted to help teach humans at Jade Mountain Academy (if they do decide to accept human students).
"Hey, Sky! How've you been? How is Wren doing-"
She had stopped midway as Sky had revealed Wren. There were no words spoken as Ivy suddenly called for Leaf. In a matter of minutes, Leaf came and saw the sight. The two humans picked up Wren and dragged her inside. Sky wasn't sure how would Leaf and Ivy would help, considering they lacked proper medical knowledge, but he knew they were Wren's best chance. Sky was told to find a dragon named Turtle, a name that sounded vaguely familiar to him. Sky wasn't good at remembering names unless he knew the person.
Eventually, he had found the character, who turned out to be a muscular Seawing. He seemed to be kind and simple, as he was able to recognize his kinship with Peril. Sky didn't have time to talk to him about his sister as he had decided to drag him away from his spot at a cafe. He pointed at the human cottage that lodged Leaf and Ivy. It was here Turtle must've known what to do because the next thing he did was a tap on the roof and a window for him was open for communication. Sky had to guess that Turtle must be a doctor of some sort or at least had the medical knowledge to help figure out what was wrong with Wren. Sky decided it was for the best to stay out of the way and let Turtle do his thing.
As Sky waited worryingly, he began to ponder how Wren came to be sick. Surely it wasn't something she ate, right? That's what gotta be making puke. He hoped it was the latter.
Then it hit him... Maybe it wasn't something that she ate that must've made her ill. Maybe it was something.. or someone!
Sky quickly begins to search his mind for the last person Wren had spent time with or at least has been spending a great deal of time with as of now. The only person who immediately came to mind was Undauntable. Now that was a strange case.
It was clear that Undauntable and Wren had somewhat of a rocky start to their friendship (if Sky could call it one), but after the whole Invincible Lord fiasco, Sky had noticed that the two humans had warmed up to one another. Sky wasn't present during Invincible Lord's defeat but it was a sight to see when Wren comforted Undauntable during his darkest hours.
Slowly after that, Wren had started to visit Undauntable whenever the two were stationed in his city. Sky never questioned it, but he often wondered why Wren liked to see Undauntable... alone. He didn't mind Wren going off by herself but it wasn't exactly like her to be hanging out around the new ruler of The Indestructible City. At least he did a better job at running a human settlement than his dad did. Something was going on between the two.
It all made sense now. Maybe it was Undauntable's doing that made Wren sick?! But why?! Undauntable wasn't the type to hurt anyone. Annoy a person, sure but to the likes of Wren?! Never. Well, that was a bit of a stretch, considering that Undauntable liked to call her "Warrior Princess", out of his amusement. But Sky knew Wren somewhat enjoyed his attention, including the affectionate words he gave to her. She just didn't like to admit it.
Scratch that... More than she cares to admit. or Want.
But the point was clear. Undauntable did something to Wren and he would be punished.
It was then Turtle came out of the shack. Sky quickly ignited his barrage of questions to the SeaWing doctor.
"Is she ok?! Is Wren ok?! Will she be alright?! Turtle, I think I may know who might have done this!"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!", Turtle startled. "You are just like your sister, in terms of conversation. Calm down and let me explain."
And So, Sky did. Taking a breather, Sky awaited patiently for the status of Wren's condition.
"Wren is going to be fine," Turtle began. "She just had some morning nausea. As for the cause, I can't quite explain. I don't know much about Scavenger anatomy, out of my fields. I might have to bring a human doctor to see what is wrong with her in that regard."
It didn't matter to Sky who or what will be coming to solve what was wrong with Wren. At least she was alright, safe and secure.
"Can I see her?!", Sky immediately asked. He tried to move past Turtle but unfortunately, he held him back.
"Slow down there, bud. I need to see if it's ok with Leaf and Ivy. I get it that she's your human partner, but this is Leaf and Ivy's home too. Don't want to break the roof to their nest, you know?"
Sky nodded in understanding.
"She may have to stay here for a while, to keep an eye on her. Do you have anywhere to stay in the time being?"
"I do have a home in Sanctuary, but I'm friends with the King. He'll probably give him a room in his palace if I ask to stay. "
"Good. I don't want you to go homeless, or at least not be looking like a bum. In the meantime, I need to find a human physician or someone with more medical knowledge than me. Stay here and wait. Leaf or Ivy will let you know when to come.
Eventually, a human did come to Wren's rescue. Sky was allowed to see her through Leaf and Ivy's window and watch her from up close. He may not be there with her right then and there, but this was close enough for Sky. But none of that mattered now. Sky knew something was up between Undauntable and Wren. He knew from the beginning that the two of them were close but he had never expected the two to be that close. Now it all made sense.
But what hurt Sky the most was that he didn't catch on to it. Even better, Wren hadn't told him anything about her relationship with the king. After all, that they've been through, he thought he could be trusted with anything. But now, it felt like a talon was shoved hard in his gut. He wasn't mad at her, even though he knew he should be. But the very notion of Wren keeping secrets made him want to break down in agony. Or walk away from her altogether.
That was what he needed. He needed to get away from all of this. to shake away these thoughts, these feelings. To get a clear conscience. No wonder why Peril enjoyed flying by her lonesome. Sky needed to do the same in that manner. He needed to take a walk.
Sky didn't care if Leaf and Ivy called out to him if Wren managed to wake up. What she needed was rest. What Sky needed was to get away from it all. Wren would eventually find him, that was something they could trust together. He wasn't the type to fly away, after a little dispute. Wren was his family.
[I think this should be the stopping point. If you guys are liking where these chapters end, please let me know. Any constructive criticism helps me. I guess I should address the elephant in the room: Wren and Sky's relationship in this fic. Yeah, I know this will never happen in an official WOF book but I wanted to spice things up here. Give some character to these two. And yes, I do ship Undauntable with Wren. I don't know why but I see a lot of potential with these two and they are cute in my opinion. I better get out while I still can, before a mob of angry Fanwings attack me. If you want to comment on any concerns or suggestions or opinions, do it and I'll get back to you. Thanks again for reading this. Until then, I'll see you guys in the next chapter.]
