It was the little moments. The ones that made the brothers' relationship different from others, special. It was within these moments where you could see the unspoken love between the two. The kind of love strangers wished they knew.
It was every little moment of banter, hair ruffling, and poking, that showed underneath their gruff hunter mask, there are two brothers, whose love has both saved and destroyed the world.
Multiple times
He Just Wanted a Salad:
Sam was cranky. Dean knew, Sam knew it, the waiter knew it, and Dean was pretty sure the entire diner they were in, knew it too.
Everything the older brother said or did, just seemed to piss off the youngest.
Like picking a place that didn't serve salads.
"What kind of fucking place doesn't serve Salads?"
"I don't know Sam!" Dean sighed, exasperated, "Will you just pick something? Have a burger, mix things up a little!"
"I don't want a burger." Sam said hotly, leaning back against the seat, arms crossed in a huff.
They had been going back and forth over this topic, since Sam had laid eyes on the menu. Sam had been in a dangerous mood all day, lacking sleep and stressed about everything. Dean wasn't stupid, he knew Sam hadn't been sleeping recently, the bag under his eyes and constant yawning was a pretty big give away. But Dean was still trying to figure out the newest reason for Insomnia, and he needed to figure it out quick.
Dean had tried to contain the unnecessarily loud comments, Sam was spurting out, about having no salads, but everyone kept giving them dirty glares. It didn't help that a waiter was standing awkwardly at their table waiting for the orders, Dean had already asked for the limited edition Everything Burger, and was now impatiently waiting for Sam to order.
"Sam, please just pick something," Dean begged, leaning over the table.
"I'm not hungry," Sam replied, looking away from Dean, bangs covering his eyes, mouth shaped into a scowl. Dean sighed, shaking his head. There was no point in arguing now, Sam was set in his stubborn bitchy mood, and once that hole had been dug, it was rather hard to climb out.
"He'll have what I'm having," he told the waiter, giving him a strained smile. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Sam give him a shocked look that quickly morphed into anger. The man nodded as he hurriedly wrote down the order and hurried off to the back, clearly relieved at being able to get away.
"I told you I don't want a burger," Sam said in an alarmingly low voice.
"Too bad. If you wanted something else then you should have stopped being so cranky and picked something," Dean replied, taking a sip of his coffee.
"I'm not being cranky!"
"Uh huh, tell that to your face."
Sam gaped at him, narrowing his eyes, "stop being a friggin jerk!"
"I'll stop, when you quit being a bitch," Dean responded calmly.
Sam huffed at him before leaning back and purposely avoiding eye contact. Dean just shook his head at Sam's childish behavior, nothing he would say was going to snap Sam out of this mood, the best thing he could do was ride it out. No matter how painful it was.
Eventually the food arrived, and Dean couldn't help the massive grin that appeared when he saw the glorious masterpiece placed in front of him.
"Sam, do you see this?" Dean practically gushed. Sam just grunted at the sight of his own burger, and began picking at the chips.
Ignoring Sam, Dean picked up the burger, oils oozing out the back, and took a bite. He groaned in delight as the tastes hit his mouth. Every part of the meal hitting him just right. From the way the burger was covered in just the right amount of grease and cheese, to all the different toppings mixing together to create pure perfection. He couldn't remember the last time he had this good of a meal.
Sam just stared at him in disgust, "God, get a room."
Glaring at him, he responded with his mouth half full, "dude you need to try this!"
"I'm good, thanks."
Dean just shrugged and pulled Sam's plate over to his side, ignoring the look Sam gave him. It didn't go unnoticed that Sam kept yawning as Dean finished up.
"Dude that was so good, we need to come back here." Dean said happily as they made their way back to the car. Sam hadn't eaten anything other than a few miner chips. Dean on the other hand, had managed to down his own entire burger plus half of Sam's untouched one. He was, to say the least, satisfied.
"Easy for you to say. I still can't believe that place doesn't have salads. It's like the most basic form of food available to mankind. Someone should report them. I should report them…." Sam continued to complain as they got into the car, Dean trying to ignore it and resist the urge to smack his brother. It wasn't like it was his fault there were no freakin salads at the diner. How was he supposed to know?
But he couldn't help the pang of sympathy he felt for his brother. He knew he was stressed about the newest earth wrecking thing of the year, and knowing his brother, Sam was going to lose sleep over it, has been losing sleep over it. And when Sam was lacking sleep he tended to get frustrated and angry over the smallest of things. He also knew that the quickest way to fix this was to make his brother take a nap.
"Dean? Dean, are you even listening?"
Dean was snapped out of his thoughts and looked over at a sibling who wasn't pleased about being ignored.
"Yeah I'm listening," listening to you whine about fucking salads. Biting back the last bit, Dean started up the car, heading back out onto open road. He really needed to take care of this mood Sam had created, else it was going to be a very long trip.
"Hey Sam, why don't you take a nap? We won't reach another stop for at least 6 hours," he tried to make the idea of sleeping fun and enjoyable, and not an excuse for Dean to get some peace and quiet and go 5 minutes without hearing a sentence containing the word salad in it.
"I'm good, thanks" was Sam reply as he shifted around trying to get comfortable. He ended up leaning against the window in a slouch position. The same position he always ended up in if he was going to sleep in the car.
"Whatever. You've haven't been sleeping recently so I just thought now would be a good time." Dean said casually.
"I've been sleeping,"
Dean snorted at that, "do you think I'm stupid?"
A small smile started at the corners of Sams mouth, Dean rolled his eyes, "Don't answer that,"
Sam stifled a laugh and rested his head on the Window, and it was silent for a few moments other than the sound of the impala's hum.
"I'm sorry," Sam spoke up softly.
Dean looked over at him, confused, "For what?"
"For being an ass. I know I was…difficult, and I'm sorry,"
Sam looked at Dean with a sad, guilty, puppy dog face, and it was one of those times when Dean just felt all anger and frustration melt away and all that was left was the older brother that would do anything to make Sam feel better, and stop with the look.
"It's fine," he said with a smile. But Sam shook his head,
"No it's not! I was a being a real bitch in that diner, and you didn't deserve that,"
Dean had to look twice when he saw Sam was starting to get all sniffly on him. His hazel eyes growing wide, puppy mode in full action. He had forgotten that this was another side effect of sleep deprived Sammy, he was an emotional wreck. Any little thing could make him extremely angry or make the water works start up.
"Sam, really, it's fine. You don't have to apologize."
"Yes I do! I can be a horrible brother sometimes, and you have to put up with that." He sniffed a couple times and ran his arm over his eyes, turning his head so Dean wouldn't see the tears that were swelling.
What is happening? He wondered as he looked at Sam in shock.
"Sammy, listen when I say, it's okay. You're just really tired, you've been pushing yourself too much." After a beat he added, "Just take a nap, it's no big deal."
"Yeah ok," Sam said quietly, shoulders slouching. He rested his head against the coolness of the window and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, and letting it out slowly. Dean watched Sam out of the corner of his eye, as he saw him gradually start to drift off, grinning happily.
About an hour later, Dean was humming the eye of the tiger under his breath, Sam still knocked out.
He was leaning towards Dean awkwardly, his legs still by the door, but his body gravitating towards the older man. Sam's head was thrown back so far, it looked painful. Shaking his head with a smile, Dean gently pushed Sam's body back into a more comfortable position, hand lingering on his shoulder just a bit, to make sure he was stable, before pushing back the odd strands of hair covering his brother's face.
It turned out to be a mistake, for even in his sleep, Sam leaned into Dean's small touch, and ended up falling back down, head landing on Dean's shoulder, with a small grunt. Sam shifted a bit, clearly upset that he was being jostled around so much, Dean on the other hand tried to push Sam back up.
"Stop," Sam murmured, fighting against Dean's motion.
"Dude, you can't sleep on me," Dean protested, looking back on to the road, "I-I'm driving!"
"Then keep your eyes on the road." Sam muttered softly, yawning as he relaxed further into his brother so he was slumped against Dean's arm, sighing happily when he was comfortable again. Enjoying the warmth he provided, "your comfy."
"Yeah, I bet I am." Dean scoffed under his breath. But as he looked down at his brother, who had drifted back off again, he couldn't help but smile adoringly. Sam looked so young and innocent while he slept, like all the years of pain and tourture never happened. Sighing resignedly, Dean looked back at the road.
He would give his brother this one.
Prompt: Sam is in a bitchy whiny mood from lack of sleep, and finally passes out in the impala on Dean's shoulder.
Hi! First off thank you for reading, it really means a lot!
I have been kind of absent on here for a while, its been extremely hectic these past few months. Anyway, a while back, I was scrolling through my saved photos, and found an old tumbler post, filled with platonic sam and Dean prompts. Needless to say, it got my juices flowing and I had a really cool idea!
This story is just going to be different one shots, during different points of the brothers lives, being well brothers! All the hugs, the manly bed sharing, banter, hair ruffling, you name it i'll write it!
I already have a couple one shots ready to go, this was the first one, but please any ideas or moments you wished you saw, just let me know and I'll write them! It can be anything you want, I just ask for no slash. It can even be if you liked something I have already written and you wanted to see more of it! The possibilities are endless! I'm hoping this story can go one for a while, I have no plans for it to stop.
So leave a review letting me know what you think, any questions/suggestions or even just to say hi :)
