Two matching elements results in a Squib for wizards. Best genetic matches are couples that don't share any elements. LF, WiWa, LE, FWi, WaE are the five basic combinations and often result in strong specialization. FWa, FE, LWa, LWi, WiE are multi-taskers and tend to be good at multiple things but not specialized.

Stream of Consciousness Notes The Earliest Version of Family Connections
None of them get along with the others as much as they do with Harry – they're too civilian like for the shinobi. – might change this further. Sakura and Hemronie are too predictable. Wouldn't it be more fun to have Hermonie terribly suspicious of them all and hate them? Epic catfights. Sasuke's the one who torments Draco because he thinks Draco's weak…. and Naruto just causes havoc for everyone. ^^ Might have him like Luna. Up until she tries to talk him into going ghost hunting. Kakashi is just accepted as another weird teacher and ignored.
Issues of making public their connection. Harry's terrified something bad will happen to Sasuke, Sasuke thinks that would be preferable and might work as good bait.
Itachi wouldn't seek out help from the DE, since he thinks that's below him. Pride is his greatest sin. Sasuke and Harry are strong because they present a united front. Sasuke has to be the one to kill Itachi and Harry has to be the one to kill Voldemort, but they can help each other. Sasuke figures out how to block Voldemort's mental attacks and has helped train Harry in combining the elemental chakra with the spiritual magic by using hand seals while holding his wand. Which takes them forever to figure out. Sasuke tries learning it himself, but even with the sharingan he's just not as good at it. Harry's a natural learner and picks everything up very quickly. By working with Harry, however, Sasuke improves his speed in using chakra and learns new ways of blocking mental attacks, without having to murder his best friend. Sasuke's there for Harry's defeat of Voldemort, but he faces Itachi alone. After the defeat of voldemort, Itachi just walks up to Hogwarts. Sasuke realizes this and sneaks away. Itachi didn't want to deal with the annoying wizards and Sasuke points out that he would have stood a much better chance of defeating Sasuke if he'd come a day or two earlier. Itachi says he didn't need such lame help. Sasuke powns his ass. It's violent, it's dirty and its very shinobi. But Sasuke's learned how to keep growing while Itachi's essentially stayed the same.
Voldemort needs to be dead by end of sixth year, leaving Harry with the choice of staying to enjoy his hard won freedom or returning with Sasuke to train some more. One way or another, he ends up returning. Naruto and Sakura have both moved in with Sasuke, and they're slowly taking over the area. Akistuki is still out there, but Naruto's getting stronger everyday, and less and less afraid. He's working as Tsunade's apprentice now and Sakura's been doing some traveling of her own. She's the authority on magic now, but they're keeping that quiet. Sasuke is rebuilding the police force while working with ANBU. He thinks police work is good for ANBU as is mentoring. He's making it a requirement in order to keep people tied to what they're supposed to be protecting. They plan to make a triumvirate. Sasuke wants Harry to hurry up and get married and start having kids. They fight about it constantly.
Version 2
What if doublemore won't let them go to the school – it would be rather unconventional. So they take their own steps to infiltrate. Sakura poses as a mousey brunette - R, Naruto keeps changing his (redheaded Weasley cousin - G, rather developed blonde girl - H, cross-eyed looking nerd based on Konoahmaru's buddy - R…) and Sasuke…goes as a tamer looking version of himself that just works at going unnoticed - R. Kakashi's the only one who can go in as himself, presented as a visiting professor from another school, his access is limited, but enough. He torments Snape plenty and denies all knowledge of where his wayward students might be.
DE attack
Discussion with Remus
Party
Train with trio, random people talking to Harry (Team 7) explanation of the deal
Team 7 learning the lay of the land & Harry dealing with school
- Need to show the strengths of wizards at some point
- Draco's trying to get even with Harry, Harry's trying to deal with him after losing Sirius, sasuke sees him as error to be fixed
- Harry and Snape are even more strained and set off Sasuke's protective streak
- Hermonie knows Sakura's full of shit and starts fights with her, Sakura's never really gotten along with other girls either
- Draco tries to get into it with a redhead Naruto who trolls hard, only to fall head over heels for blonde femme Naruto – sets off Sasuke's protective streak again
- Kakashi alternates between "accompanying" Snape and threatening him
- Luna and Naruto making friends until Luna suggests something ghost related
- (Who's the DADA teacher? Kakashi? A nice guy who ends up getting killed by Itachi? Maybe both? An old man that Kakashi is supposed to be assisting, Kakashi works in some practical stuff, steals spells like mad, while old man teaching the wand waving. Kakashi treats him like a client, attentive, but kind of condescending and distant too. Old man (Nicholas Northstein) really is absent minded, but ends up saving Harry's life at the cost of his own and maybe even surprises Itachi with just what an old wizard can do)
- It's the girls of Hogwarts that finally figure out that Harry and Sasuke are related – for them Sasuke is the hotter version of Potter (muscles, dark and broody versus boy-next-door) – issue of whether to go public or not
- Sasuke's teaching Harry how to fight hand to hand, chakra and some bastardized jutsus, naturally starts with fire but it's not working. Realizes fire is not Harry's element. Pulls Kakashi in for a consultation – paper simultaneously crumbles and soaks. O.O Eventually try testing Harry's friends. Hermonie's rips one each side while curling in until it looks kind of like a four petal flower. Ron's rips and soaks.
- Want to extend to Christmas at Grimmauld Place. Sakura and Naruto take to Christmas like ducks to water. Naruto meets the twins. Sasuke very manfully tries to participate in the festivities. Harry's reminded a lot of Sirius but is determined to make things work with Sasuke. Kakashi disappears a lot for some "downtime". Maybe an attack on the train returning after the holidays – mostly muggle borns. Harry rushes to help the others and Team 7 is struggling to protect him.
Version 3
Hogwarts!
Start with the train, it's traditional. How do they arrive? By civilian train, of course. Oh! Hiking to the boarder and camping along the way. Harry loves it, takes to it immediately. The others are tense but still in familiar territory. One incident at night that Kakashi and Sakura take care of. Need to feature her more. Get to the border, and start taking public transit. Harry likes all the travel and inadvertently helps the others figure out how to blend in. He may not understand exactly what to do, but he's seen metal detectors before and knows how to queue. – finally get to the train in London? What about wands? Diagon alley, I guess, for one night only. Harry's over the moon. He has family to go shopping with, and this time he gets to take care of sasuke. Wants to get them ice cream and books (because they like learning stuff) and wands of course. How does that go down? They won't work well. No matter what, the wand doesn't fit. The wand maker (Ollivander) is frustrated and disgruntled at being asked to do the impossible. Finally gives them some rejects of his. They're not good for wizards to use because they're so limited? Unpredictable? The latter. So they are what he usually sells to squibs, to 'help' them manage a little or pass. He doesn't expect it to work for them. But eventually it does. He sells them six wands (kakashi: in case one breaks, always have back up equipment) which the wand maker thinks is so ridiculous its almost insulting. And the four of them freely trade wands back and forth over the year, until gradually, they each have one they prefer. The wands they have to choose from are either very plain and rough or ridiculous ornate. Their purpose is either to desperately try not to draw attention or to be status symbols. Naruto naturally grabs something flashy – it ends up suiting Sasuke? Snake core, with fancy reptilian like carvings that make Naruto think of frogs. Sakura or Kakashi go for clean lines so it won't get caught on things/easy to clean. Sasuke tried to pick out something that looks like Harry's. Kakashi blindly picks two more. Literally. Just shoves his hand into the box and comes out with a pale wood (slug) and a two toned ribbed one.
Cypress – selfsacrifice, variant brown, cat whisker, spiral shape, first grabbed by Sakura but fits Naruto 11inches
Cedar – loyalty, rich brown, owl feather, carved handle, first grabbed by Naruto but fits Kakashi 15 inches
Oak – natural, tan, horse hair, plain, grabbed as an extra, malleable for all of them, 13 inches
Aspen – focused user, white, peacock feather, simple plain wood, first grabbed by Kakashi but fits Sakura 14 inches
Ebony – non conformist, black, rat whisker, very detailed carving, given to sasuke, but fits all of them when they're pushing themselves 14 inches
Mahogany – James P. reddish, snake skin, simple design with wood burnt rings at the bottom, grabbed at random but fits Sasuke 11inches
Okay, so wands are picked, they spend the night there, with the team feeling tense due to the new surroundings and Harry passing out. They get to the train early, and they don't even blink at the passageway, which sort of disappoints Harry. Hermonie shows up next, in a flurry of worry since her letters went unanswered. Then the Weasley clan descends and there's lots of hugs and intros and Naruto is like MY PEOPLE, which is why a lot of his henges are redheads. Oh, I guess Remus ought to escort? Naw, they like throwing people into the deep end. Kakashi's just wandering around, looking lost, still with his book because no one can read it's cover anyway. They forego the vests, and eventually get the trio into the uniform, but the robes are always a challenge. They give them a place to hide things but are so cumbersome. Naruto keeps stealing people's ties? So, structure! Kakashi is the DADA teacher's 'assistant' but might pop in on other classes to observe. He's a highly respected and a teacher from their village (two separate things, but whatever) Team 7 is put in sixth year, but move from class to class, sometimes together, sometimes not? Trying not to draw attention to the fact that they're related. But that kind of works, right? There's only four possible groups then, usually with two to a classroom. 6 possibilities, three of which have Harry in them, so fifty fifty. Which gets tweaked in their favor. Five main classes, so maybe three out of five, with kakashi in one more and them finding reasons to be in the fifth. So DADA is covered, charms, potions and herbs (because it's outside) but not trans since it's Harry's strong point. Classes : charms GryRav Herb: GryHuff Potions: GrySly DADA: RavSly or RavHuff or Huff Sly Trans: RavSly or SlyHuff or RavHuff so, maybe they're with Gry for charms and potions (best and worst subjects) and Huff for Herbs, then sly for DADA (leaning towards this) and Rav for Trans? Sounds good. They have their own quarters and try to get Harry to stay there but he insists otherwise. Though he spends time hanging out there
Plotting: Train – kind of want an attack here, but it doesn't fit my time line…., Intro to school, class?, training – Harry struggling and Kakashi suggesting the chakra paper, interlude with kakashi and the DADA teacher and maybe snape – point of view of Northstein, aware that Kakashi is patronizing but indulgent of him, noticing Kakashi's focus on snape, maybe have Draco and co try to pull something and it works enough to send Sasuke into full attack mode – maybe have Harry take the fall for it, Christmas
What's my long term plot? Voldemort – how does he react? No one knows right away that Sasuke is family, they just know Harry has new friends, so V doesn't make a direct attack yet. But he does try to get at Harry – maybe first attempt when he's going for the train? Sees that the nin are a problem. The truth comes out at school and that's when V decides this is troublesome and should be fixed. If it's not the DADA teacher, who is it? Draco? Would be interesting to play up his revenge need. "wait, so basically his dad's missing nin and they still let him back into school?" But draco's not eeeevil, just an angry kid, but capable of doing harm. Could keep the whole closet plot and killing Dumbledore. It would give the team something to spin their wheels about. But then V finds out about the family thing and the plot changes a little? He certainly can't have Harry with a strong family. I don't want to complete rewrite the last two books. Do I include horcruxes? It makes for a great quest, but too big for this. So why does V want Harry dead? Could still have their souls tied. Could do something where Harry is actually getting weaker as V gets stronger? Drat. Should have thought of that sooner and could have included it. Alright, what can I do now? Maybe V finds out about the part of "power he knows not" and assumes it's ninjutsu, so he needs to kill the nins? Maybe this is the year V really kicks it up and there's several attempts on Harry's life, and the nin are like wtf, this is so much worse than you implied. Eventually Harry does need to learn a few jutsus. Katon would be good? Except his elements are wind and lightening. Maybe a Nagi level of telekinesis. Or a natural affinity for blocking. Do I want to involve Itachi even remotely? Could have him 'interfere' at some point, but leave it vague as to why. Need something dramatic for an ending. Harry's been lured out by a trap once before, maybe this time it isn't a lie. Sasuke, even? Oooh, Draco actually finds a way to kidnap him. In part by luck, but also spells. Maybe he figured out in DADA just how blind the nin can be to simple spells used well. Despite they're training in DA club, they still have a hard time predicting and countering them, especially non elemental ones! So Draco actually takes initiative and goes from the low hanging fruit of Sasuke and manages it. V graciously accepts. Harry comes to the rescue. Maybe also have something about sighting of Itachi on the grounds, and Sasuke being super distracted by that and not looking inward. Itachi is waiting for his chance (secretly scaring off DEs).
So. multiple attempts on Harry (with Itachi in the background) Draco's failed taunt making him seem small and pathetic but he's secretly working his mission, Sasuke gets kidnaped, Harry goes to rescue…. Have it at the Malfoy manor, Harry and the rest of team 7 against all the DEs. Turns into a funhouse of tag, but Team 7 tries to keep one of them always with Harry, but Harry does end up on his own (maybe with only a Naruto clone) I kind of want him to just stab the bastard and be done with it. Okay, V catches him, hauls him out to execute in front of everyone. Breaks his wand? And Harry, like a boss, shoves a senbon or something past V's ribs and into the heart (boy that's going to be set off flags to research) V drops like a rock? And Harry's magic goes nuts. Maybe work in that he's started having control issues and at first they're blaming it on the jutsus, but truth is V was leeching? Okay, how about Harry sucks at jutsus, even worse than other wizards because that's the part of his magic V's been draining, the stuff that comes from inside him. So need to explain early on the difference so the reader knows. – so what if the big ending is just after Christmas? Draco goes home, hears how important the nin is, and sees an opportunity. Oh, I like Northstein and would like to see him defending Harry bravely at some point. Maybe he's quietly a retired Auror who is like a retire nin, very serious about his role as protector
Train – intro/assignment – harry explains to H&R – class or DA (Team 7 struggling) or Training (Harry struggling) – truth comes out (Hogsemede? Life threatening attack?) – Christmas at Grimm – Sasuke's kidnapping (Itachi?) – Harry to the rescue (Tag in the Manor) - End
Draco as a minor annoyance but secretly a threat
Explain how magic and nin works
Kakashi sub-plot – hunting Itachi, manipulating Snape, build a relationship with Northstein
Relationships:
Hermonie: doesn't like Sakura (or any of them)
Ron: comfortable with Naruto, defensive around Sasuke (Rich boy trying to steal his friend)
Ginny: trying to get the chance to actually talk to Harry without the others, Sasuke isn't against, but wants him to return home
Dumbledore: frustrated at being manipulated but trying to get his own advantage
Timeline: train – intro – (classes – cub – training – draco) – hogemeade? attempt on D – Christmas – more – more – final
Things I need: one early attack, another at school, Itachi being a distraction, then finding out they're family, students finding out about itachi, another attack, final
How many ways to kill a Harry: attack upon return, something deadly in the mail, a sudden storm during practice, a deadly snake in his room Lol, poison, full on attack in town, some kind of genjutsu? Like in Anastasia.
What needs to happen before the train: travel from the board to modern world, stop off in Diagon for supplies and wand, overnighting, getting to the train
Stream of Con Notes - AKA WTF am I doing
Draco pulls something and Sasuke's impulse is to finish it for good, but Naruto pulls him back with the attitude of he's just a kid, dude. Harry more or less agrees, though he's aware of just how much damage 'just a kid' can do by doing the wrong thing (Severus/Sirius, Harry/Sirius) In the end it's going to be Harry that's right, but don't want that to show that this early. Want to make him look insignificant. Maybe have Hermione witness some of this play out and seeing it as more proof that there's something deeply wrong with these people that their first reaction is violence.
….
So what's kakashi doing, question of the year. They find out Harry is missing, the students scatter, but Kakashi is managing. He checks his contacts first. Snape is in his office, grading. No alarm raised there. So the death eaters likely don't know anything. So who to stalk next? Who in this situation would know? Remus is deployed. Kakashi checked. Andwho deployed him? The old man. Who just so happens to be missing. My oh my. Kakashi sensei goes to m to check? M gets a frantic call from Tonks. Theres been a murder. No dark mark, but its bad.
Where the fuck was sakura? Kakashi snagged her and put her to work while he went out in person.
…..
Itchi now knows what Tom asked about, and starts his hunt. Where would a man like v hide something? Unexplained deaths classic for a sociopath – itachi knows enough of them to know. The locket is easy, and also a dud. The ring is not hard to guess either, but someone has beaten him there. The headmaster or V the only likely sources. It doesn't take much to figure out what the order is trying to find. What kakashi is also trying to find. But itachi can move more freely and gets there first. V panics.
Kakashi knows they're looking for things but not why. Cant see it in Harry.
…..
What objectives do I have? Do the characters have?
Itachi wants to end this V thing because he thinks Harry is Sasukes best shot at a normal life and if they can fix this one thing, maybe that makes it okay. Then he finds out Harry is part of the problem. Try to scare him away? Knows he won't be able to get Sasuke to leave now. Which means either getting Harry to leave or killing him. How do you get Harry to leave? Tell him the truth and he'll stay to fight it. Threaten his friends and he'll just run to sasuke. Make him believe he's dangerous. But how, when you're the 'dangerous' one?
No magic – because its not chakra. Chakra is pushed out from the body and shaped. Magic is contoured to your whim. who figures it out. Harry, because his best strength is figuring things out. But only under duress. Looses his wand with Itachi and reacts to a direct chakra attack by defending himself with chakra. Because it never occurred to them to attack harry. Not when harry was defenseless.
Friends – hermonie realizing their relationship is very unhealthy. Then her realizing its because they are both very sad. Hermonie realizing that Sasuke would literaly do anythign to protect Harry – even listen to her when she says hes a fuck up.
V needs to die. How do you remove a H? (want it to almost kill Harry and burn him badly – scar to spread down his face and across his scalp like someone cracked an egg) Maybe itachi decides that someone has to kill Harry, and he'll do it before Sasuke can figure it out himself.
But how does Harry do it? Does he get itachis help?
Where does northstein cross the line? Or does he? Maybe he's actually trying to protect harry. Because clearly these nin cant be trusted. Snape?
Where the hell am I going with this? Need to get to harry going to hogesmead without the trio, separating from ron and hermione to go buy sasuke a gift without them knowing and itachi snatching him up.
…
So order of chapters:
Team 7 splits until Sasuke senses Itachi!
Harry goes shopping and DE's attack!
Northstein struggles to get to Harry to help
Sasuke gets to far side of town, maybe sees illusion of Itachi "you should not have come here, little brother. It will only end in disappoint for you." senses wizards attack, realizes this is likely a trap and comes as quickly as he can. Gets there just in time to see real Itachi take Harry, end scene
Naruto backtracks, also sees Harry get taken, tries to stabilize Northstein while sasuke chases after a phantom, Sakura arrives and gets to work, saves northstein? Naruto runs after Sasuke only to find the trail has gone cold. They've lost Harry.
Hermonie or Ron confronts them, but can't stay mad just scared. What do we do now? no answers, ugh. Find the map, make sure he's off grounds. You tell the headmaster. You tell the order. How far could he get with Harry? Are there any spots best to go? Is he with the DEs? Kakashi arrives, indicates he's been in contact with D.'s spy. Start the search!
Harry talks to itachi, tries confronting him but itachi is calm. Why do you stay? There no reason to. (tries to manipulate him into leaving – fails) you will die. I'm not afraid~. And what about Sasuke? Poor little sasuke, abandoned again. Not abandoned! Oh but he is if you stay. You will die. Harry starts to cotton on that this is not a threat. What do you know? Are you working with V? pishsha. But I have been gathering information. Following your headmaster's trail. Slughorn!
…..
Nin were in the back and had split up. Two of them get attacked by DE and they hold their own, but it slows them down. The other has to get out of the crush to get there and is the one to see Harry taken. One of them with Northstein when this goes down. Really have to decide whether to kill hm.
Northstein lives – he can blame the nin, doesn't really move plot
Northstein dies – one of the nin is with him at the time, semi-sympathetic character, possibly turn people off, plays in contrast to the DADA teacher always trying to kill Harry
…
Chapter on DADA, Harry is still covering for sasuke but he's also still pissed at him and refused to cave
Harry's in hogesmeade when he gets attacked by death eaters, northstein gets him out only to get attacked by itachi, who takes harry.
Northstein limps home to get help, accusing the nin of being in league
Or Northstein dies right before itachi shows up
Itachi takes harry to have a talk – do you know what this task will cost you? Are You prepared? Why not leave with sasuke? Do you know what it will cost sauske? Are you sure you don't want to change your mind? No, can't, won't. It will kill you. Perhaps kinder to do it now and spare sasuke the inevitable. You don't know tht for sure. Oh yes I do You'e the last piece, and either the old man will kill you or you will kill yourself. Either way, sasuke loses. Do you want to reconsider now? that's a lie. It could be, it could not. Which do you think it is?
…..
Itachi might be a nin but he was also a soldier from what Team 7 had to say about him. Soldiers looked for what was most tactically sound. Sasuke had explained that distance didn't really make a difference, but that travel wasn't instantaneous. Which would mean Itachi would need to pass through places that he was at least familiar with. Spots he wouldn't be spotted or interfered with. Most wizarding settlements were tightly clustered together public areas or highly warded private land. There wasn't that much open space that wasn't near something. Distance might not matter in how far away Itachi could take Harry but distance did matter by proximity. He'd avoid wizarding settlements.
…
Some of these isolated places were good, but Itachi would have to have known about them in advance. You didn't just wander into odd corners of the Forbidden Forest. It was more likely he'd pick someplace he had seen before. Sasuke and explained that distance didn't really make a difference but
