Chapter 2 – Somebody That I Used To Know
Shrek stood before his former lover, Barry B. Benson, wondering what he should say or even what Barry wanted. It had been a few a few years since they last spoke and they hadn't parted on good terms. Shrek ultimately had to move a few states away and found himself a place in Duloc, Michigan, where he eventually met Donkey. Although, Shrek now wonders if he should have gone farther.
"What do you want, Barry?" Shrek asked, hoping Barry could hear the veiled hatred.
"Well, it's just that, I come up here to spend the day in Duloc, and who do I find but my ex. Who ripped my heart out and dropped off the face of the Earth," Barry said, with hatred in his voice that Shrek could definitely hear. "It's been almost four years, Shrek. Please come back."
"You dumped me, Barry! Remember?!" Shrek almost yelled, now full of rage. "You thought I was cheating on you with Fiona!"
"It was a fair assumption! What was I supposed to think about you always running off with some woman?!" Barry yelled, defensively.
"Barry, we're gay! I'm gay! You're gay! Fiona's gay! If anything, I should have questioned you and your male friends!" Shrek yelled, exasperated, and tired of rehashing this old argument.
"Shrek, I'm sorry for all of that. Please, I can change! Just give me a chance, I'll show you! I can be better, please Shrek, just come back home!" Barry begged, suddenly apologetic.
"Fuck you, Barry" Shrek said as he got in his car and drove off. He felt that his whole day was ruined, and even finally getting engaged to Donkey wouldn't make things better. Maybe he should cancel those reservations and try again some other time. But no! He can't let Barry get to him! That's what he wants and Shrek refuses to let Barry ruin another relationship for him. Tonight, Shrek is proposing to Donkey, and he already knows what the answer will be.
After some time, Shrek pulls into his drive and is finally back home. He takes the small box containing Donkey's bracelet out of the bag and hides it in the glove box. Normally, not a good hiding place, but Donkey doesn't exactly have hands. Shrek goes to get out of the car when his phone buzzes. He checks and it's Fiona texting him.
"hey how did things with barry are you ok?"
Shrek thought for a moment before replying.
"went about as shit as you would expect. but im fine tho"
"cool glad to hear. still proposing to donkey?"
"of course"
"hell yeah :)"
Shrek put his phone back in his pocket and got of the car, already feeling a lot better now that some time has passed since the encounter. He refuses to let Barry stand in the way of his happily ever after. He walks up to his front door and heads inside, already going back over his plans for the day. The front door leads directly into the kitchen where, now that he's awake, Donkey is making waffles. Shrek immediately forgets Barry because Donkey makes the best waffles. Something that's even more impressive when you consider that he has hooves. Seems like he made it just in time too, because Donkey starts bringing them over once Shrek sits down at the table.
"Hey babe, how'd it go with Fiona? Find something good for Vanessa?" Donkey asked after setting down the waffles.
Shrek is briefly confused until he remembers the cover story he came up with to keep his proposal a secret. "Oh yeah, went great. Our dastardly plan to help Fiona steal Farquaad's wife right out from under him continues," Shrek said in between bites. God, Donkey's waffles are great.
Donkey seemed to hesitate for a second before speaking. "You know, Fiona called earlier. She said you ran into Barry while out shopping." Shrek stopped eating as the atmosphere suddenly became serious. Donkey continued, "It's actually why I made waffles. I know how much you love them. I just want to know if you're okay, Shrek."
"I'm fine Donkey. Really. Why worry about Barry when I have you?" Shrek said with a smile. "I love you, Donkey."
"And I love you too, Shrek"
