A/N: Upstead Appreciation Week Day 7: "You're an idiot." / "But you love me."
Hailey paces in the bathroom, waiting for the timer on her phone to go off. Worried about how he will react if her instincts were right and the test was positive. It wasn't like this was something they talked about.
And then there was the second problem— neither of them had good role models growing up. She knows that neither of them would ever be like her father, but there was still the fear of being a bad parent.
Her heart stops for a second when the timer goes off. Hailey takes a deep breath before grabbing the stick. Pregnant 3+
She has to read the stick several times before she actually believes it. When it somewhat sinks in, she places a hand gently on her stomach. "You're really in there." She puts the test back into the box and takes it with her so Jay doesn't find it by accident.
Jay comes home two hours later. "Hey, babe," he kisses her head. "How're feeling?"
"Okay. How was Will?"
"He's good. Said he was missing his favorite sister," Jay responds sitting next to her. "Are you hungry? I think I can make soup without burning it," Jay tells her. "Or we can get take out," Jay offers, knowing how sick Hailey was that morning.
"I'm fine. Really, but I kind of feel like Greek," Hailey answers him.
"Greek?" Jay asks.
"Yeah, is that okay with you?" Hailey asks.
"Sounds good."
"Do you know what you want, or do you want the menu?"
"I might look at it."
"Okay."
The next day, Hailey drives to work separately with the excuse that she needs to run an errand on the way home. When Jay asked why he couldn't go with her, she told him it was a female thing, which wasn't a lie per se.
On the way home from work, Hailey stops at Target and goes into the baby aisle. Looking for something that she can use to tell Jay.
After several minutes, she finds three onesies to give to Jay. The first one was grey with a police car on it. Underneath the car was the words daddys backup in black writing. The second one was white, again with a police car and above the car NEW PARTNER IN CRIME also in black writing. The last one was also grey with I'VE GOT YOUR 6 DADDY, "I've got your" was written in black, "6" was in three horizontal stripes, blue in the middle and black on the top and bottom, and the word "daddy" was in blue.
Smiling to herself, Hailey goes to another aisle where she picks up a pale grey bag and puts the onesies in. She then goes to check out.
When Hailey gets into her car, she locks the door carefully folding the onesies so the writing is the only thing that is visible, so he won't be able to tell what it is right away. She then places the pregnancy test that she snuck out of the apartment with her that morning, in the bottom of the bag before stacking the onesies on top.
Happy with her work, Hailey puts the bag on the floor of the passenger seat before making the drive home, both nervous and excited.
Hailey arrives home and opens the door to their apartment to find Jay already inside making dinner. "Hey," Hailey greets. "What are you making?"
"Chicken," Jay answers. "We need to go food shopping. This was the only thing we had for an actual dinner."
"Okay. Tomorrow after work?" Hailey asks.
"Okay," Jay agrees. "What's that?" Jay questions Hailey, noticing the bag.
"It's for you," Hailey tells him.
"It's not my birthday and I know I didn't forget our anniversary."
"Just open it," Hailey insists.
Jay looks to her before opening the bag. Slowly he pulls out the onesies before seeing the box with the pregnancy test. A look of realization comes over his face. "Wait… are you?" he asks slowly.
Hailey nods.
"What? How? When? Ours?" he asks rapidly.
"The test said three-plus weeks. Yes, ours. And when two people love each other," Hailey laughs.
"Funny," Jay grumbles, looking to her stomach. "There's really a baby in there?" Jay places a hand on her still flat stomach.
"I need to go to a doctor to confirm it, but it explains why I've been sick. And I thought I was late because of the stress from work."
"You're going to need to go on desk duty," Jay realizes. "Wait… what do you want to do? Are we keeping it?" he looks up to meet her eyes.
"You're an idiot," Hailey rolls her eyes. "Do you think I would tell you like this if I didn't want to keep it?"
Jay shakes his head, "But you love me."
"Yes, I love you," Hailey answers, reaching up to peck him on the lips. "We love you," Hailey adds, grabbing his hand and placing it on her stomach with her hand on top of his.
"What about work? I don't want to be that guy who tells you what to do, but I don't want what happened to Kim to happen to you," he looks to her with worry in his eyes.
"I'll tell Voight and go on desk duty, but I want to wait until I see a doctor," Hailey answers.
"Okay," Jay whispers.
"And after we tell Voight, I want to tell Kim and Adam. I don't want them to hear it from someone else."
"Okay," Jay agrees, knowing why Hailey wants to tell them specifically. "Do you want anything? Have you had any cravings yet?"
"No, and not yet."
"But you'll tell me?"
"Yes, I'll tell you. But right now, I want to eat dinner and then watch a movie with you."
"We can do that," Jay agrees.
"Have you thought about what you would want?" Jay asks her as they cuddle on the couch watching a movie.
"Not really, I just what it to be healthy."
"I kinda want a mini-you."
"Really?" Hailey asks surprised.
"Yeah, a mini-Hailey."
"If we have a girl, she'd have you wrapped around her finger the day she's born."
"Maybe. Do you want to know?"
"I don't know. Probably. We have time, I don't think we can find out for a while still. We have time to decide."
Jay hums in agreement, hand rubbing her stomach. "I love both of you," he tells Hailey.
"We love you too," Hailey grabs his hand on her stomach and intertwines their fingers while still resting on her stomach.
A/N: Day 7 of 21. So, this one was a bit hard for me since I don't believe either of them would call each other an idiot, even jokingly. Just because of their respective pasts, I believe they would be cautious of the words they use.
On another note, I don't have any of the Setllaride fics completely written, so they probably won't be posted until even as opposed to being posted between 1 and 3 AM my time, which all of the Upstead fics have been. I am hoping to get them posted on the dates I have set for the goals of each one.
