Saturday - Aoi Koyomi's Penthouse Suite - 21:27
"Oh yeah... Gorgeous!"
A man in a purple robe stands in the centre of his luxury apartment. Around him is expensive furniture, with a low-rise glass coffee table by his feet. On the table are a few lines of white powder, along with some credit cards. In his hand is a cell phone, held up to his ear.
"Korean and Chinese!" He continues to explain to the person on the other end of line. "Really good price too. Two for one I think."
Koyomi turns around and faces the large window pane that would normally expose the gorgeous Tokyo skyline. Instead, Koyomi sees two masked figures hanging from ropes with their feet against the glass.
"What the f-"
Before he can finish his sentence, the glass shatters as a bullet flies through it. The two masked figures swing into the apartment, unhooking their harnesses from the rope suspending them as they enter.
As they gain solid ground, Yukino and Hachiman raise their silenced handguns towards the lieutenant.
"Who are you?" Koyomi yells out, still with the phone to his ear.
The person on the other line begins responding, before Koyomi interrupts.
"No, not you!"
Hachiman walks up to him and grabs the phone out of his hand, then puts the speaker to his own mouth.
"Sorry, Aoi Koyomi can't come to the phone. His dance card just got booked."
The device flies out the newly broken window as the assassin throws the phone over his shoulder.
"Hey! That was the new iPhone 14!"
"You're going to go out the window with it if you don't tell us what we want to know." The masked Yukino says angrily.
She then walks up to the man, grabbing him by the collar and pushing him up against one of the adjacent window panes.
"I dont even know who you are, or what you want! I'm just a stock broker!"
Yukino holds her pistol by the barrel, then hits the window pane with the handle of the gun. The window begins to crack, as she pushes the lieutenant against the glass with her other hand.
"You lie, you die."
Hachiman looks around the apartment, as his partner does the interrogation.
"I don't know what you want!"
"Your name is Aoi Koyomi, you are a stock broker, but you're also a high level lietenant in the Five-Stars crime organization."
"I swear to God, I'm not-"
She slams the window with her gun again, causing further cracks to emerge.
"Swear to the glass."
Sweat begins to drip down Koyomi's face, as he feels the window behind him begin to crumble against his back.
"Okay! It's true. Just let me go."
Yukino throws him over to the side. Koyomi drops to his knees, leaning on the glass coffee table. Hachiman walks up behind him, pressing the barrel of his gun against the lieutenant's head.
"The blackmail your organization has on key figures in Tokyo. There are digital copies. Where are they?"
"I don't have them!"
Hachiman presses the gun down harder.
"Then who does?"
Yukino looks at the glass pane she was pressing the man up against. She gently taps it with her finger, and the whole window shatters into small pieces. She backs up, shocked at how close she came to dropping him.
"You think I dont know who you are? What you did to my safety deposit box? You guys are dead." Koyomi exclaims.
"Confident for a man with a gun to his head." The assassin replies, grabbing Koyomi by the collar and flipping him on his back.
Now facing Hachiman, the lieutenant smiles.
"Tokiwabashi Tower. We keep the digital files in the server room of that building." He says, wiping the sweat from his forehead. "But you'll never get to it. They're expecting you!"
"You and your associates thought you were untouchable." Hachiman responds, lowering his gun. "But you're not. Tell Komanda: we're not going after his lieutenants, or his files, or his money. We're going after everything. Once we're done, there'll be nothing left."
CLICK
"Time to go." Yukino interjects, hooking her harness to one of the ropes dangling outside the penthouse.
She grabs the other one, getting it ready for the assassin, who is now walking over to her.
Tokyo Streets - 21:34
The sounds of cars driving by and distant chatter fill the air. The streets are bustling, with some people coming home from work and others just heading out for a night on the town. Insulated from this bustle is Rorona. Who is standing in a phone booth.
Ever since being arrested and broken out of jail, he hasn't been able to as easily walk around during the day without the risk of being recognized from his face being plastered all over TV. So most of his time out has been at night.
The noise from outside the phone booth is muted, but still audible. He looks around at the four glass walls, then back at the pay phone. Rorona drops a few coins into the slot. Then digit by digit, begins dialing a number.
It rings for a few moments, before the person on the other end of the line answers.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice can be heard.
"Hi, Pamela."
This is Rorona's ex-wife and mother of his son.
"Oh my god." She exclaims through the phone. "What the hell are you doing calling me?"
"I just… I dont know. I wanted to know how you're doing I guess?"
"How am I doing? What about how are you doing?! You were all over the news! You're a fugitive."
"Not the worst position I've been in." He says, half-joking.
"This isn't funny Rorona! Deishuu's been asking where you are."
"Listen, I know. I screwed up, okay? But I'm working to fix it."
"That's what you always say."
Rorona clenches his fist, then leans his head against the payphone.
"I know, but this time I mean it. This whole 'wanted fugitive' thing is a big misunderstanding and I'm working to get my name cleared. Just give me time, Pamela."
"Like I have a choice…"
"Just tell Deishuu I'm alright, and tell him I'm thinking about him okay!"
"I will…"
He takes a deep breath, and there is silence on the line for a few seconds.
"Hey Rorona…"
"Yeah?"
"I think it's best if you dont call again. Not until you sort this out."
"Yeah." He responds, frustrated. "You're right."
Once again, there is silence on the line.
"I love you, Pamela."
She waits a few moments before responding.
"Be safe, Rorona."
Tokyo Streets - 21:52
"That was exhilirating." Yukino exclaims with excitement, as she walks down the dark alleyway.
"The rappel or the interrogation?" Hachiman responds, following behind her.
"Both! Perfect execution." She answers, turning to face him.
As she does so, the wealthy girl rips off her mask, dropping it into a large dumpster beside them. Hachiman does the same, then motions his palm out towards her. She slaps his hand, high-fiving him.
"Most of the time I wouldn't lower myself to such meathead debauchery such as 'high fives' but my adrenaline is too spiked for me to think clearly."
They drop their harnesses into the dumpster, before exiting the alleyway and heading onto the sidewalk. A few people walk by them, no idea what just transpired in the skyscrapers towering over them.
The two of them cross the street, and begin walking down the adjacent sidewalk side-by-side. Before getting far, Yukino stops suddenly. Hachiman gets a few steps further before stopping too. He turns to face her, before speaking.
"What's wrong?"
She kneels down and picks a coin up from the ground. They both look up, seeing that they're directly under the building from the last night.
"It landed on tails." Yukino says, as she continues walking. "That means it was me who should've fired the shot."
"You would've missed." Hachiman responds, walking at her side.
She nudges him slightly.
"Not at all."
They both smile, as they continue walking down the sidewalk. Cars and people pass them, along with a cool breeze blowing.
"That thing you said earlier." Yukino starts. "About trust…"
"What about it?"
"How can you trust us? I mean... All of us. Shizuka, Rorona, Yui," She turns her head to him. "Me?"
"Trust is a funny thing."
"I tried to have you killed…"
"You did what you thought was best for yourself and for Shizuka."
"I was wrong."
The assassin stops walking and turns to face Yukino. She too stops, looking him in the eye.
"You're a brilliant girl, Yukino. A technical genius, an amazing fighter."
Yukino looks down to the side, blushing.
"An invaluable member of the team." He continues. "A friend."
Hachiman watches as she takes a few steps forward. Yukino shifts her gaze upwards, to the starry night sky.
"And when all this is over?" She begins, still looking up at the stars. "What happens to the five of us?"
There is a brief silence.
"I don't know."
"I've cared about so few people, and lost them all. I can't lose Shizuka, or any of you."
She shifts her gaze back to him, looking Hachiman in the eye, before continuing.
"But there's no way we all make it through this with no casualties."
The assassin nods, listening.
"Shizuka, Rorona, and Yuigahama's safety is all that matters. We brought them into this, but they're not like us."
"What are you trying to say?"
Yukino looks at him with a dead serious expression, before responding.
"I need to know that when the time comes, when sacrifices need to be made, that we'll have the strength to do what they cannot, to ensure their safety."
"We will." He responds, equally serious.
Sunday - Chiba Precinct - 08:00
Phones ringing and people moving around and chatting fill the air in the police station, as the morning shift replaces the night shift. Entering through the front is Detective Reo Touma, holding a stack of envelopes under one arm, with a leather satchel over the other.
He makes his way past a few officers, then sits down by his desk.
"You hear about what happened?" A female voice asks, coming from behind Touma.
The detective looks over his shoulder, seeing Karen, his partner.
"I just got in." He responds.
"Last night some rich guy in the city centre got his apartment raided."
"Well, it happens…" Touma says dismissively.
Karen chuckles and drops a folder on his desk.
"Not like this." She exclaims.
Touma raises an eyebrow and opens the folder. Inside are CCTV security camera photos from inside a luxury penthouse apartment. The photos show two masked figures holding handguns, with a man in a robe on the ground.
"Apaprently they rappeled from the roof of the building."
"Rappeled?" Touma repeats, confirming.
"Yeah, sound like anyone you know?"
The detective sighs, knowing she's inferring that Hachiman is involved. Seeing his lack of responses, Karen continues.
"Well, we found the gear they used in the dumpster by the side of the building. We're dusting it for prints or DNA, but so far they look clean."
"Great…"
"You know what's interesting though?"
"What?"
"That Rorona Kobayashi guy who escaped from custody, that's been working with the assassin; that's not him."
Touma looks closer at the photos, as his partner continues.
"Look at the figure by the window. That's not a guy, that's a woman. Either Rorona Kobayashi got a sex change and foot shorter, or your assassin's got a new partner."
"Might not be my assassin then."
"Maybe not, but this isn't the first time this duo has done something like this." Karen says, dropping another folder on the desk. "Remember that viral case a few months back of the two masked individuals breaking into a mantion Switzerland, kneecapping the guards, then leaving without taking anything?"
"Yeah…" Touma answers, as he opens the folder.
Inside are fully body sketches of a masked Hachiman and Yukino.
"These are the sketches the police got from the people inside the mansion. Similar style to the people who did the break in last night, not to mention same M.O."
"Great, I'll look out for this Bonnie and Clyde, while I hunt a world class assassin, escaped convict, and deal with the hundred other things I have on my plate."
The detective leans back in his chair, running his fingers through his graying hair.
Sunday - Abandoned Basement - 09:05
"Here's what Yukino and I were able to come with." Shizuka announces, tapping on the touchscreen monitor.
Hachiman, Rorona, and Yukino each sit on a chair, watching and listening.
"Aoi Koyomi gave you guys the location of the building that the evidence is being hosted on, but that's not much. They'll be expecting us."
Hachiman folds his arms and leans back in his chair, as the teacher continues.
"So we need to the unexpected. According to what Hachiman told me about his dealing with Komanda over the last few years, all their altercations have been with Hachiman assaulting his organization head on. So that's what Komanda will be expecting, a frontal assault."
"Yeah, he's not the subtle type." Rorona cracks, looking over at Hachiman.
"He'll need to be this time." Shizuka responds. "Yukino and I looked through the blueprints of the building. It's a maze, and the server room is on the upper floors. Getting there through a firefight's going to be impossible."
"So, what? I sneak in?" The assassin asks, raising an eyebrow.
"Not just you." Yukino interjects.
"Yeah.." Shizuka confirms with a frown. "Much to my dismay, Yukino will be going in with you. I hate the idea of her life being in danger, but getting this evidence is too important, and you guys work too well together."
"If this place is such a maze, as you say, then we're going to need someone in our ears directing us on where to go."
Shizuka smirks, and points to her chest.
"That'll be me."
"Hold on." Rorona says. "That's a pretty high pressure job. I don't know if you can handle it, maybe I should-"
"No." Yukino interrupts. "You'll need to be ready with our getaway vehicle. We can't have your focus split. Shizuka can do it. I trust her."
The wealthy girl looks at Shizuka as she says this, then over at Hachiman, thinking about their previous conversations.
"Whatever you guys say." Rorona responds, leaning back in his seat.
Shizuka taps the screen of the large touchscreen monitor, and a screengrab of several blueprints pop up.
"There's a sewage line running directly under the building. A construction team have been doing renovations over the last few months, so there's a room with a gaping hole in the wall, leading straight into the sewer. You guys will enter in from underground."
"Sounds easy enough." Hachiman says, standing up. "When do we do it?"
"They'll be expecting us to move fast. I say we wait a few days, then strike over the weekend." Yukino answers.
"That the only reason?" The assassin asks, looking at Yukino, then Shizuka with a playful expression.
"That, and we have school during the week."
"Yeah, that's what I thought."
"Don't take too much pride in your lack of education and or employment." Yukino retorts.
The four of them smile, looking around at each other.
Author's Notes: See you next week.
