Me: I love this crack ship I love shipping Robin with nonbinary Beast Boy who goes by Changeling and I love the nature-y name Elm I picked to replace the name Garfield
Other Me: Oh no I want to change the name Elm.
So I was fretting and I was like am I gonna have to rewrite the three fics ("Bird and Beast" "Merry Crisis" and "Perfect Match") I've written? Then I remembered that I'm nonbinary and I went through like three different names before I settled on a story I like, so I decided to just write a fic about them changing their name instead.
Needless to say, don't read this if you don't like LGBTQ themes/people/etc. And don't read this if you just like, hate this ship because you ship these two in different ships because I can confidently tell you that I ALSO ship these two in different ships. I like multishipping. I might ship the same things as you do I just happen to be writing this ship right now.
Robin was practicing sparring outside with his partner when Changeling changed the subject.
"I want to change my name again."
"Which one? Changeling or Elm? Or both?"
"Nah, just Elm. Outgrew it."
Robin tried to figure out if that was an intentional tree pun or not.
"Cool. Do you have a new name in mind? Or are you going to go back to your old one?" He dodged a hit and his leg flew upwards, which Changeling nimbly avoided.
"I guess I'm kind of going back to my old one? I never felt like a Garfield, so I tried Gar out, and that was me for a little while. It was good, really, but…" They shrugged.
"And Elm was good for a while too! It helped me branch out, figure out my identity."
Robin was positive that that tree pun was intentional but he chose to leaf it alone.
"Good, I'm glad you're figuring yourself out. It makes me happy to see you feel confident about this kind of thing."
"Thanks, Bird."
"Any time, Beast." Robin landed a strike and Changeling rubbed their face a little, laughing off the sting.
"Sorry, love, are you alright?"
"Never better."
Robin cupped their face and smiled tenderly at them, considering ending the sparring session and going in for a kiss. Then Changeling cleared their throat.
"Anyway. Field."
"Huh?" Dick was drawn from his lovesick stupor.
"I think I want to go by Field now."
"Cool, cool, I like it. I can change the inscription on the watch if you want. Unless you don't want me to?" Robin had gotten them an inscribed watch for Valentine's day but he didn't want the inscription to make Field feel bad.
"No, you can change it. I think I'll keep the name Field. For a while. Maybe forever. Field Grayson is a name I could get used to…"
Robin was flustered now, "You have to quit fake-out proposing to me. You're gonna be the death of me."
"Who said it was a fake-out?" They smirked.
Robin reached out and swatted them.
"Field!" The name felt natural for both of them, and Field burst out into a radiant smile.
"I like it," they confessed.
"It suits you."
"Wanna get back to sparring?" Field asked.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm gonna kick your ass."
"I know you will, Bird. I'm counting on it."
Robin laughed and the battle continued.
