Chapter 1:
Mary was quite the unfortunate girl. It was apparent that wherever she went, bad luck and misfortune followed like moths to a flame. Pokémon would always try to avoid her and even the family meowth ran away when she was brought home from the hospital.
Due to this unfortunate condition, Mary didn't have the best self esteem and would frequently dip into waves of depression and self loathing. She would often cry herself to sleep and hope that would things would get better.
When Mary was 10 years old, she had the chance to get her very own pokémon. Alas, no pokémon available would even look her way and the ones she approached would start whimpering or crying. Snorlaxes when actively wake up and get away if Mary was in the vicinity.
One day, it all turned around for Mary.
It was an unusually cold morning in Alola. Mary awoke to her alarm going off. She sat up sluggishly and noticed the first strange thing. The alarm had gone off on time. The alarm hadn't ever done that before. She climbed out of the bed covers and put on some shorts and a flower print shirt. It may have been colder, but it was still Alola. She pulled a black beanie which contrasted nicely against her auburn hair. She slipped on some slippers and headed to the kitchen.
"Happy Birthday sweetie!" Mary's parents chorused. Mary blinked in surprise. She had totally forgotten about her birthday. Nothing had really stuck out to her or had enjoyment anymore. Her parents were holding a beautiful cake, which thankfully hadn't caught fire just by Mary looking at it. (That had happened 3 years in a row before they learned their lesson.) It was shaped like a Geodude, (one of Mary's favorite Pokémons,) and had an 18 candle sticking out of it.
"Wow," Mary stammered, "thank you!" Mary's mom set down the cake and embraced her in a warm hug. "We love you sweetie," she said.
"How does it feel to be old?" Mary's dad said winking jokingly but still got a disapproving look from her mom. Mary's mom smiled and patted Mary on the shoulder.
"Stay right here," she told her, "your father and I have an exciting gift for you!" Mary sat down on a stool, still a bit surprised, while her mom went to the other room. She could tell her dad was excited by the way he had a genuine grin on his face.
Her mom returned from the other room with a pokémon behind her. It was an absol, the Disaster Pokémon. Mary's face fell.
"Is this some sort of cruel joke? To tell me all I do is bring disaster?" Mary asked, her voice breaking.
"No!" Her mom said shaking her head vigorously, "we actually think he is the one who can solve your problem!" Mary glanced at the absol in disbelief. The absol nodded as if to confirm her mother's theory.
"So is this the new family pokémon?" Mary asked, standing up and approaching the stranger.
"Actually," her dad said pointing at Mary, "he's all yours! He hasn't run away and seems to like you! It's about time you got a pokémon."
Mary held out her hand hesitantly to Absol. Absol nuzzled his head into her hand affectionately. Mary was dumbfounded. She felt almost warm inside, some sort of feeling she hadn't felt in years. Was it a stomachache? No, it had to be a sense of love and belonging. Mary felt tears come to her eyes. She gave Absol a big hug.
It was clear that those to were going to be pretty close.
