on top of the world
The view from the top of the tor was mesmerising. Hills rolled down in gentle waves, spreading out until they met the early light of dawn. The sun was only just peering over the horizon, almost distrustfully.
It was beautiful. Kingsley took a deep breath, standing tall at the very top of the world.
"You're trying to murder me, aren't you?"
Kingsley smiled to himself. Behind him, leaning over with his hands planted on his knees, Harry Potter was gasping for breath. He was red and sweaty and his hair was stuck to his forehead, and he looked like one breath was all it would take for him to keel over.
"Auror Training was a lot tougher than this, and I watched you fly through it," Kingsley said.
"Auror Training was tougher than anything I've ever done, but I'd still rather do the whole thing again than climb another hill," Harry complained. "How many miles was that?"
"A few," Kingsley said evasively. "Come and look at the sunrise with me."
Harry did, eventually, come and look at the sunrise with him. There was something very satisfying about the way he slotted neatly under Kingsley's arm, not like a cog or a puzzle piece, but rather like something that had always been there and had never really left. There was enough difference in height between them that Kingsley could lean down and kiss the top of his head, sunrays warming his skin, and yet he didn't feel too big or too much, like he was taking up more space than he deserved. Not with Harry.
"We could have Apparated here," Harry said quietly.
"We could have arrived by Thestral too," Kingsley said, just as quietly. "Or Hippogriff. Or one of Hagrid's pumpkins, if we knew the right spells."
"I'd like to see you rolling around on a pumpkin," Harry said, sounding a little bit cheerier now that he wasn't being forced to walk uphill. "I'd pay to see it, actually."
"How much?"
"Name your price."
Kingsley shifted slightly and held his chin, tilting it up so he could kiss him on the mouth. Harry's eyes fell shut, and he hummed. It was warmer than the sun skating over his skin.
"That all?" Harry murmured, when they drew apart.
"That was just the initial down payment," Kingsley said, and it was hard to kiss when they were both snickering like children, but they gave it their best shot.
