Aragorn, son of Arathorn, Grandson of...

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

Author's note: Um...I can justify this. Recently, I saw a video on YouTube, where Legolas decides to name every ancestor of Aragorn while standing up for him. And, I decided to expand on that, and this is where we are. LOTR has become my most recent obsession(I had a phase for Doctor Who, and one for ATLA, and one for PJO, and some other fandoms). This also required a lot of research. The first few lines which are in italics are borrowed directly from the movie. Enjoy!

"You cannot wield it," said Aragorn. "None of us can." Boromir slowly turned to face the king without a throne. "The One Ring answers to Sauron alone. It has no other master."

Boromir's expression was scathing. "And what would a ranger know of this matter?" he scoffed, his contempt plainly heard.

"This is no mere ranger," an elf stood up abruptly, not seeming one of Elrond's house. Tall was he by height, and clad in green and brown garb, one with the trees of the council-chamber seemed he. His head was dark, and his eyes were keen and far-seeing. "He is Aragorn, son of Arathorn."

Boromir sat down in shock, but Legolas was not yet finished.

"Son of Arador, son of Argonui, son of Arathorn I, son of Arassuil, son of Arahad II, son of Aravorn, son of Aragost, son of Arahad I, son of Araglas, son of Aragorn I," the Sindar elf continued, seemingly not tired and pretending as if it was normal to spit out generations of ancestors of a man, albeit a man of noble birth. But perhaps, it was due to him being an elf, he must have lived thousands of years, and knew some of them personally. But Legolas was still not done. "Son of Aravir, son of Araehel, son of Aranarth, son of Arvedui, son of Araphant, son of Araval, son of Arvegel II, son of..."

Aragorn had seemed to come out of his shock, and pinched his nose in tiredeness, and said, "Havo dad, Legolas."

But the elf ignored him. Many in the council chamber were still in shock, though the elder elfs(Elrond and Glorfindel, two of the only remaining elves from the First Age, as well as Galdor and Erestor) seemed out of it. And were more amused and annoyed than tired.

"Arvegil, son of Argeleb II, son of Araphor, son of Arveleg I," continued the elf, and it was unknown how far he would go. "Son of Argeleb I, son of Malvegil, son of Celebrindor, son of Celepharn, son of Mallor, son of Beleg of Arthedain, son of Amlaith, son of Eärendur, son of Elendur, son of Valandur, son of Tarondor, son of Tarcil."

Frodo watched in silence and shock as the son of Thranduil(son of Oropher) continued to name thousands of generations of kings and lords. Not all of these names were unknown to him, Bilbo did study ancient history after all. He knew that this line would eventually come to Isildur, and then to Elros Tar-Minyatur, the first king of Numenor, the island realm of man that was sunk by Eru Allfather. He knew that it would eventually lead back to Melian the Maia and Beren and Luthien, and wondered what the elf of Mirkwood would do then.

"Son of Arantar, son of Eldacar, son of Valandil, son of Isildur."

There!

"Son of Elendil, son of Amandil, son of Númendil."

It seemed that the names had a pattern. At first, they started with only 'Ara', but as they reached the Arthedain, the pattern changed.

"Grandson of Eärendur."

It seemed that Legolas had forgotten a name. Now, what would happen? As far as he knew, the names of the 2nd to 14th Lords of Andúnië was unknown, forgotten to history. There names might be remembered in Numenorian records, but they were long gone, lost far beneath the waters of Ulmo in the seabeds of the Sundering Seas.

"Son of Arendur, son of Arnemdur, son of..."

He could see Bilbo listening attentively, commiting the names to memory. He noticed that Erestor, the Noldorin elf had started doodling on his papers, while Glorfindel absentmindedly watched the trees, for whatever reason he did not know.

"Son of Valandil," the familiar name jerked him back to attention. The name of the 1st Lord of Andúnië.

"Son of Silmariën, daughter of Tar-Elendil, son of Tar-Amandil, son of Vardamir Nólimon, son of Elros Tar-Minyatur."

He saw Lord Elrond lean forward, his eyes betraying his true age and his sorrow. In a flash, he remembered that the first king of Numenor was the half-elven Lord's twin. He could not imagine how it must have been to lose a brother, for he had none. His mother and father had died when he was 12, and he could not remember many things about them.

"Son of Eärendil and Elwing."

He unconsciously turned to look at the sky even if there were no stars because it was day-time. He knew Eärendil's boat to roam the skies by night every day, and of the Silmaril on his brow. He knew of Elwing, descendant of Luthien Tinuviel herself.

"Daughter of Dior, son of Luthien, daughter of Elwë Singollo."

Frodo moved to stand up, but Legolas seemed to not have finished. Confusion flooded him for a few moments. After all, Elwë was one of the First-born, how further back could he go? He did not know how much time had passed him by.

"Aragorn is also the leader of..."

Frodo resigned himself for a long council.

3 hours later...

"Pharmacist of Lorenar, doctor of Celegorm, brother to Curufin, brother to Caranthir, brother to Amras, brother to Amrod, brother to Maglor, brother to Maedhros, son of Fëanor, brother to Fingolfin, brother to Findis, brother to Finarfin, father of Galadriel, sister of Finrod Felagund, son of Eärwen, daughter of Olwë."

Three hours had passed. Several were dozing, and then out of the corner of his eye, he could see a red-bearded dwarf stand up and raise his axe. He then brought it down upon the ring, and was promptly thrown back. A red eye flashed in his mind, the Eye of Sauron and he grimaced. On the plus side, Legolas had stopped. Elrond quickly took the opportunity and said, "The Ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli, son of Gloin, by any craft that we here possess. But now, the day is old. We shall continue this council tomorrow."

With a sigh of relief, Frodo stood up. When on his way to his room, he saw and heard Elrond whisper to Boromir, "Next time, be cautious to insult Aragorn. We cannot delay this any longer than we already had."

He agreed.

Who knew elves knew that much of history?

That was very tiring. It took me about 2 hours, longer than it should have. Most of the names here are canon, except for 3, Arendur, Arnemdur and Lorenar. Everything else is invented by the one and only J.R.R. Tolkien.

Let it not be said that I do not do my research well.

And do me a favour, please, and tell me what you think of it.
