My Spy

Chapter 6

"I love you, too," Chloe finally whispered.

A big smile came to Beca's lips as she slid back on top of Chloe and kissed her. Her smile suddenly fell when Chloe was no longer under her.

"Chloe? Come back!" Beca cried out. "I love you!"

Beca sat up with a start and looked around. She wiped both hands down her face and mumbled into the darkness, "Where exactly are you, Chloe Beale?"

Beca fell back on the bed and was back to sleep in a matter of minutes. She awoke a couple of hours later.

She sat up and reached for her phone to check the time. Her brow furrowed when she saw she had a text from an unknown number.

Beca clicked on the message and her heart sped up as she read the words, "Hey, Beca, it's Chloe."

Beca held the phone's screen to her chest and let out a shaky breath. She pulled the phone back so she could read the rest of the text.

I know it's been a while, but I'm in Atlanta and heard you were still at Barden. Do you think we can meet up and talk?

"Oh, my God," Beca exclaimed. "She wants to talk. What should I do?"

Beca could hear the sound of muffled voices coming from downstairs. She jumped out of bed and went racing downstairs to see who was up.

Beca could tell that several of the Bellas were congregated in the kitchen. She rushed in, nearly colliding with CR.

"Whoa there, Speedy Gonzalez," CR said as she grabbed Beca's arms to keep her from falling.

"She texted me," Beca said, holding onto CR's arms to help steady herself. "I can't believe she texted me."

"Who texted you?" CR asked.

"Chloe," Beca breathed out. "Chloe texted me."

"Oh, my God, Beca," Stacie said. "That's great news. What did she say?"

"She's in Atlanta and wants to see me so we can talk," Beca replied.

"What did you tell her?" CR asked.

"Nothing yet," Beca said. "I didn't know what to say."

"You've been pining over her for three years," Jessica said, chuckling. "Tell her yes; you know you want to."

"I do," Beca said. "But, I'm afraid."

"Afraid of what?" Jessica asked.

"I'm afraid of getting my heart broken," Beca said, looking down as she mumbled, "Again."

Stacie, Jessica, and CR looked at each other. Stacie moved to stand in front of Beca.

"Beca," Stacie said, taking Beca by the shoulders to get her to look at her. "You still love Chloe after all this time, right?"

Beca nodded.

"Then who's to say Chloe isn't still in love with you? Maybe that's why she wants to talk to you. To see if there's a chance for you two to be together."

"You think?"

"You'll never know if you don't talk to her," Jessica said.

"Okay," Beca said. "I'll text her back and ask when we can meet."

"See if she can meet you today," CR suggested. "We'll be in Atlanta this afternoon checking out DSM. I don't think any of the girls would mind if we got there early or stayed a little longer."

"I agree," Jessica said.

"CR's right," Stacie said. "We can leave anytime you need us to, so don't worry about that."

"Thanks," Beca said.

Beca wrote her text and sent it to Chloe. She then saved Chloe's number in her contacts and stood smiling at Chloe's name on her phone.

"I am both terrified and excited, at the same time," Beca said, smiling like the lovesick idiot she (still) was.

Chloe opened the door to the bathroom to allow the steam from her shower to dissipate. She stood wrapped in a towel, brushing her teeth when she heard her phone ping with a text notification.

Hoping Beca responded, she quickly rinsed her mouth and spit into the sink. She rushed to her room and picked up her phone. Her heart sank as she saw that the message was from Kommissar telling her to meet her and her team at The Cheesecake Factory at Noon.

Chloe ran a hand through her still wet hair and responded in the affirmative. She threw her phone down onto the bed and started gathering her clothes for the day.

Chloe laced up her black combat boots and stood to check herself in the full-length mirror. Black boots; check. Black leather pants; check. Black tank; check. Black leather wrist cuffs; check. Sunglasses; check.

"This should get both Kommissar's and Beca's attention," Chloe said with a satisfied smirk to herself.

Chloe picked up her "work" phone and called Jason.

"Hey, Beale," Jason said as he answered the call.

"Meeting's on for today at Noon," Chloe said. "At The Cheesecake Factory near the Mall."

"Got it," Jason said. "I'll have our team in place by eleven-thirty. Don't forget to check your sunglasses to make sure they work; Donaldson will be watching everything. Okay?"

"Hang on," Chloe said, pulling her laptop toward her and typing the passcode onto the site to check her reception. She put the glasses on and watched the monitor. "All good here."

"Good," Jason said. "I'll meet you back at your apartment once the meeting is over for the debrief. If Kommissar wants you to go elsewhere, we'll play it by ear. Does that work for you?"

"Yes," Chloe said, looking over when her other phone pinged with a text notification.

"I'll fill the Director in and will let you know if he has any orders for you."

"Understood," Chloe said as she picked up her second phone.

Chloe looked at who the text was from and let out a small gasp.

"Everything okay, Beale?" Jason asked.

"What? Oh, yeah, everything's fine," Chloe managed to mumble. "I'll, uh, I'll talk to you later."

"Talk to you later," Jason said and ended the call.

Chloe looked at her phone and pulled up the text.

Beca: I'd love to meet up and talk. The Bellas and I will be in Atlanta for a show this afternoon. Can you meet me for lunch around Noon?

"Fuck," Chloe exclaimed to the empty room. "I can't have lunch with Beca. Maybe she'll be okay with getting coffee after her show."

Chloe wrote the text and read it over before hitting send.

~~ My Spy ~~

Beca had been pacing back and forth with her phone in her hand, waiting for Chloe's reply. She let out a shriek and nearly dropped her phone when it pinged with a text notification.

"It's from Chloe," she told Jessica, who was looking at her.

"What does she say?" Jessica asked.

"Shit," Beca said, reading the text. "She can't do lunch. She suggests meeting for coffee. That's not good."

"Why isn't it?" Jessica asked. "She didn't say she couldn't meet at all; just that she couldn't do lunch."

"If she agreed to meet for lunch, we would be spending more time together," Beca said. "If we just meet for coffee, the time we will be together will be shorter. I was hoping to have a nice, long talk with her. If our time is limited, I don't think I'm going to like what she has to say."

"Take it easy, Beca," Jessica said. "Maybe she's working and doesn't have time for a long lunch. She didn't say she didn't want to meet at all; she just suggested you meet over coffee."

"Who's meeting who over coffee?" Stacie asked as she and the other Bellas entered the room.

"Chloe texted Beca," Jessica said.

"And she wants to meet over coffee?" Stacie asked. "I thought you were going to suggest lunch?"

"I did," Beca said. "But, she can't do lunch, so she suggested meeting for coffee."

"Beca thinks Chloe is blowing her off," Jessica said. "And doesn't want to have a long, meaningful conversation with her."

"Ah," Stacie said, understanding now. "Do you think maybe she's working and can't get away for anything longer than a cup of coffee?"

"That's what I told her," Jessica said.

"What time is DSM's performance at the car show?" Beca asked, looking at her phone.

"Two," three voices responded.

"It probably won't last more than half an hour," Stacie added.

"Okay," Beca said as she started typing. "I'll see if Chloe can meet me at two forty-five. Are you sure you girls don't mind sticking around so I can meet with her? I don't know how long we'll talk."

"Everyone already said they were okay with however you wanted it to go," CR replied for the group.

"Yeah, Beca," Emily said. "We have your back."

"Thanks," Beca said. "I'm sure there's a Starbucks in the mall so I'll ask her to meet me there."

"It's going to take about an hour to get to Atlanta," Fat Amy said. "It's almost eleven. If we leave now, we can all go to lunch before DSM's show."

"That's a good idea," CR said.

"Beca?" Stacie said, pulling Beca's attention away from her phone. "Is it okay with you if we leave now and get lunch in Atlanta?"

"Um, that was the original plan," Beca said, looking at her phone. "Chloe just texted that she can meet me at Starbucks at three. So, we're good to go for lunch."

"I have a good feeling about this," Ashley said, smiling at Beca.

"I hope you're right," Beca said.

"Let's go, ladies," Fat Amy said, as she made her way out the door.

~~ My Spy ~~

Chloe was driving to The Cheesecake Factory and couldn't help the smile she was wearing at the thought of seeing Beca again for the first time in three years. Her smile fell when her work phone rang and she saw that Jason was calling. If he was calling, it usually meant something was wrong.

"Hey, Jason," Chloe said, using her car's Bluetooth. "What's wrong?"

"We have a slight problem," Jason said. "The Bellas just arrived at The Cheesecake Factory where you're supposed to meet Kommissar."

"Fuck," Chloe said, pulling into the restaurant's parking area. "I can't blow off Kommissar. We're too close to bringing them down. What does the Director say about this? What should I do?"

"The Director said you should stick to the plan," Jason said. "With the cuffs and your sunglasses and the fact that your physical appearance has changed, we don't think any of the Bellas will recognize you. I was told to call so you'd be aware that the Bellas are there so you aren't blindsided."

"Okay," Chloe said. "Um, hey, can we meet for the debrief at about four? I've got something to do after I'm finished with Kommissar."

"Um, sure," Jason said. "May I ask what your plans are?"

"You can ask whatever you want," Chloe said. "Doesn't mean I'm going to answer you. But, I will tell you that it has nothing to do with the case. It's more of a personal nature."

"It wouldn't have anything to do with a certain Bella that is now at The Cheesecake Factory does it?"

Chloe remained silent and Jason sighed.

"I hope you know what you're doing, Chloe," Jason said. "Text me when I should meet you."

"Thanks, Jason," Chloe said. "I have to go. DSM just got here."

"Be careful," Jason said as Chloe ended the call.

Chloe got out of her car and made her way to the entrance, arriving just as Kommissar and some of the DSM members did.

"Aw, Chloe," Kommissar said. "Nice to see you. You look gorgeous as ever."

"thank you," Chloe said. "But, I'm here to discuss business and nothing else."

"Okay," Kommissar said. "We can discuss the pleasure aspect later. I know the business side of things will be very profitable for both of us."

"That's what I'm shooting for," Chloe said.

Chloe followed Kommissar into the restaurant and looked around. She spotted the Bellas and moved to the middle of the group, concealing herself on all sides.

Chloe's eyes immediately went to Beca.

"Oh, God, she's even hotter than I remember," Chloe thought as she stared at Beca.

The Bellas were seated and looking over the menus when DSM came into the restaurant.

"DSM at two o'clock," Ashley said, looking over at the door.

"We know that, Ashley. Or are you Jessica?" Fat Amy said. "Whoever you are, don't worry; we have plenty of time."

"No," Ashley said. "I meant that DSM just walked in and they're over by the door."

The rest of the Bellas all turned to look.

"Don't everyone look at once," Flo hissed. "Oh Dios mío, in my country if everyone looked at someone all at once, you would be sold for two chickens."

Beca squinted her eyes at Flo and shook her head.

"Do you think they know who we are?" Beca whispered to Stacie.

"Ah, the Barden Bellas," Kommissar said, walking over to their table.

"I guess that answers that question," Beca mumbled.

"Did you come to see us because you are, what do the kids say these days, jelly?"

"We are so not jelly," Emily said indignantly.

"We should really thank you," Kommissar said, moving to stand in front of Emily. "For making this tour a reality, you know, with your bumbling ineptitude. We should really send them something. Fruit basket?"

"Yum-yum," Pieter said.

"Or would you prefer mini-muffins?" Kommissar asked, turning her gaze to Beca when she stood.

"Okay," Beca said. "We didn't come here to start something with you guys. We just wanted to check you out before the Worlds where we're going to kick your ass."

Chloe had to smile at how confident and badass Beca sounded.

"You," Kommissar said, stepping into Beca's personal space. "You are the kicker of ass?"

"Yeah," Beca said, not sounding as confident as before.

"You are so tiny," Kommissar said. "Like an elf. Sprite?" She turned to Pieter and asked something in German to which he responded "Troll." "That's it. You are a troll."

Kommissar has a smug smile on her face.

"You," Beca said, moving her hand up and down, pointing her finger at Kommissar. "Are physically. . . flawless."

"Thank you," Kommissar said.

"But it doesn't mean I like you," Beca said and looked confused by her own words.

"What the Hell was that?" Chloe said, covering her mouth as soon as the words popped out.

Everyone turned to look at her and she shrank back, looking over at Beca to see if there was any recognition on her face. Beca didn't look at her; she just stared at Kommissar.

"Sorry," Chloe muttered, looking at Kommissar and keeping her voice low. "Can we get on with this and be seated?"

"Let's go," Kommissar said, turning to find someone to give them a table. "Bye, for now, Bellas."

Chloe followed and chanced one last look back at Beca. Beca wasn't looking at her and Chloe let out a sigh of relief.

"So, where do we have to get the shipment from?" Chloe asked.

"New York," Kommissar replied.

"New York?" Chloe exclaimed. "That's quite a risky move on your part. They have more patrols and police than almost anywhere in the U.S. Why do I feel as if we're being set up?"

Kommissar laughed. "Don't worry, we own the guy who manages the docks," Kommissar said. "Our shipments come in and are moved wherever we need them, without any interference. So, are you in or not? We have other buyers but we're giving you first choice, and we need to be in New York the day after tomorrow to hand over the shipment to whoever we end up selling it to."

"We want it," Chloe said. "It's just a bigger shipment than we were expecting. How much more is it going to cost us?"

"That's the beauty of the whole set-up," Pieter said. "The cost to you is the same."

"I'll have to check with my boss," Chloe said. "And make arrangements to move the shipment once we have it. I'm not sure I can get it done in just 24 hours."

"Call your boss," Kommissar said. "We don't have a lot of time to waste. And, you should plan to stay in New York for a few days. We could have some fun."

"No can do," Chloe said, shaking her head. "I've told you before, I don't mix business with pleasure. And we need to keep this strictly business."

"Pity," Kommissar said, leering at Chloe.

Lunch was finally over and Chloe left DSM to prepare for their show. She thought about staying to watch as well, but didn't want to push her luck and have the Bellas discover she was investigating the German singing group. Her mind went on to sweeter things, like seeing Beca and talking over coffee.

Beca stood in the crowd with the rest of the Bellas waiting to see what DSM could do. She was still a little embarrassed about her earlier behavior around the blonde leader of the group. She tried to shake off the embarrassing event and let thoughts of seeing Chloe again fill her head. She couldn't help the goofy smile that suddenly appeared on her face.

Chloe had about an hour to kill before she met with Beca so she found a spot at Starbucks and sat down to enter her notes into her laptop. She had just sat down with her coffee when her phone rang; the caller ID showed it was the Director (aka, Uncle Matt) calling.

"Beale here, sir," Chloe answered the call.

"Chloe, we need you to meet us at the airport soon as possible," the Director said. "I want to be in New York early so we can meet with the local authorities and coordinate the arrests."

Chloe sighed. "Yes, sir. I can be there in twenty minutes."

"Good," the Director said. "I'll see you on the plane."

"Roger that," Chloe said and ended the call. "Well, shit."

A/N: I know I'm a day late, but I had a very busy day yesterday and didn't have time to edit and post. Look for the next chapter on Thursday next week (I promise).
