Once inside, they coordinated with other teams that were going to Rivera's different property locations to make sure they were all hit at the same time, and that no one would have a chance to escape or destroy evidence. They waited until it was dark to move out, so that it would be easier for them to breach the properties without them being seen. The property that Intelligence were going to was one of Rivera's most frequented properties, a house near the Chicago river.

All of the breaches went smoothly, all except the one Intelligence were on. They tried to be discreet, but within mere seconds of them being in the perimeter of the property there were bullets flying. They had intruded on Rivera having a meeting with his most trusted men, pure dumb luck on their part, but which meant that they had to face as many of his men as possible, which was a win in their books.

Since they interrupted a meeting with Rivera's most loyal people, his lackies all put themselves out first to protect their boss, which allowed Rivera to escape out the back door. Unfortunately for him, Hailey and Jay took notice, and left the rest of Intelligence and the patrol officers that had come with them for backup to deal with the men at the house.

The pair were hot on his heels before they lost him down an alleyway which split into two paths. Hailey took the right one and Jay continued going straight.

Hailey went down the side very carefully but as fast as she could. She needed to catch him. He was going to be put in cuffs or have bullets put in him, she really didn't care which one at this point, but either way it was going to be done by her.

She had cleared the entire side alley and there was still no sign of Rivera. She sighed in defeat as she got to the end of the alley which led down by the river, hoping that he was there but there was no sign of him.

"FUCK!" she yelled in defeat and put her gun back in its holster. She moved her hand to open the coms attached to her jacket.

"Jay, I've got no luck here, have you got him?" she asked, praying to all and every god that Jay had him, dead or alive.

"No luck on my end, either" came back over the coms.

"Fuck," she whispered again and clicked her coms to turn it on again. "Where the hell could he—"

She got cut off and fell to the ground. Someone had hit her with something hard and metal across her back.

"Hailey?" she distantly heard Jay's voice over the coms. "Hailey, you good?"

She groaned, rolling over, trying to reach for the coms to let someone know that she had been hit, but the attacker delivered a kick to her ribs, sending a piercing pain throughout her whole body and making her cough and splutter.

"Stupid cop bitch, you think you could get me?" Rivera spat as he stood over her. He continued to talk about how he was smarter than the cops and there was no way they were ever going to arrest him. While he continued his monologue, Hailey saw an opening where she could try and swipe his legs out from under him using her own and she took the opportunity.

Rivera, not expecting Hailey's blow, fell to the floor and she tried to get herself up and get away, but the wind was still knocked out of her. She managed to crawl away a little bit and scramble to her feet, but Rivera was back up by then and charging straight at her.

He was in front of her too fast for her to be able to get her gun out, and he didn't seem to have one on him so physical hits it was. He swung for her face, catching her cheek, tearing it open with the rings he was wearing. He hit hard, so Hailey hit back harder, with everything she had.

There was no denying that Rivera was winning. He had the jump on her from the get-go, with sneaking up and attacking her, and he was also three times bigger than her, but Hailey being Hailey wasn't giving up. She knew Jay would be there soon, and the rest of the team probably not long after, as they all had to have heard Hailey getting cut off over coms.

She just had to hold on, just until Jay got there, she had to hold on for Jay. She knew he would blame himself if she got too badly hurt. She couldn't let him think that it was his fault, it would eat him alive.

But she was running out of energy fast, too fast for her liking. But she hit and she hit, and she hit, as hard as she could, as fast as she could, but it was no use, he was getting the better of her and she could tell that he knew that and that he knew she knew it too.

Rivera took a few steps back and Hailey looked up at him, confused, trying to catch her breath and then reach for her gun, but she was too slow. She felt his foot hit her chest and then a rush of coldness came over her.

It took her a moment to realise that he had kicked her over the barrier and into the river. She immediately swam for the surface, ignoring the amount of pain it caused her. She could see the light above her getting brighter and brighter, she was almost at the surface, but then something pulled her back.

There was some sort of netting and rope that had tangled itself around one of her ankles, she probably fell on it when Rivera pushed her in. She pulled on the netting a couple times, and she managed to free her foot from it. 'Thank god,' she thought. For a second there she thought she was going to be stuck and drown. She tugged on the rope to try and get it off her ankle or wherever it was stuck on, keeping her under, but it wouldn't budge.

Panic started to rise in her chest, and she felt herself breathe out heavily for a second before stopping, she had to save as much oxygen as possible. She knew she had about one minute before she would drown so she had to be smart.

She moved to get closer to her ankle to try and untie it that way, but it was no use. It was wrapped around, and it knotted. How that happened, she had no clue, but she was lucky it had wrapped around just her ankle and not her entire body, that would've been a more serious problem.

She pulled at the rope, and it seemed to be stuck on something at the bottom of the river, though she couldn't see what since the water was too murky for that and she didn't have enough time to swim down and see. The only thing she could do now was pull and pull with every ounce of strength she had left in her body.

She couldn't pass out now, she just had to get to the surface and somehow up on to the river's edge and then she could collapse, pass out, she could do whatever she wanted, she just needed to get out.

She was running out of time now and running out of air. She could hear muffled voices from above the water as she tried to pull her foot out of the rope it was caught on, but she had no luck. All she wanted to do was scream, but she knew she couldn't. 'I have to save as much oxygen as I can,' she thought to herself, trying to get the rope off of her foot again, but it seemed like there was no way it would come off.

Hailey closed her eyes, thinking of Jay. She had to get out, for him. She knew her time was running out, so she tugged on the rope harder, but like all the times before, it wouldn't budge. She was becoming lightheaded now and she pulled, and she pulled, but it wasn't enough because the darkness soon took over and she fought it until finally the darkness won and everything went black.

Meanwhile

"Jay, I've got no luck here have you got him?" Jay heard Hailey's voice over the coms, and he cursed to himself. Where the hell could the man be?

"No luck on my end either," He clicked his coms on and told her, hoping one of them would find him soon and then this case would be over, and they could just go home and relax. Hailey needed that, hell he needed it, seeing his wife so stressed and tense made him stressed and tense. Sometimes it was like they were one person when it came to their thoughts or feelings.

"Where the hell could he—" Jay heard her start but she got cut off.

"Hailey?" he said into the coms. "Hailey, you good?" he asked, but there was no answer

"Hailey? Hailey, answer me," he said, panic bubbling in his chest. "Hails, I need you to let me know you're good."

No answer

"Jay what's your location?" he heard Kevins panicked voice in his ear.

"I'm not too far from the river, I'm pretty sure that's where Hailey is. I'm going back to follow the way she took to find her."

"Copy that, we're on our way, we'll meet you by the river soon," Kevin told him, and if anyone said anything else Jay didn't catch it because he was too busy trying to get to his wife. When he got to the river, he saw a discarded crowbar left in the middle of the floor, so he immediately pulled his gun from its holster where he had placed it while he was running.

He was hoping to be met by Hailey slapping the cuff on Rivera, instead he was met with Rivera back to him, hand in his pockets, limping away, trying to seem as normal as possible.

"Michael Rivera, stop right there and put your hands where I can see them!" he shouted, getting closer to him. Rivera stopped in his tracks and turned around.

"Put your hands where I can see them or I will have no choice but to shoot," Jay warned, but Rivera didn't do as Jay said and kept his hands in his pockets.

"Put your hands on your head right now, this is your last warning!" Jay shouted.

"The other officer, she, she was a feisty one," Rivera started, and Jay stiffened at his words.

"Blondes are always feisty," Rivera said. "She was a fighter too, fought hard, knew how to throw a punch."

"Put your hands on your head, slowly" Jay said through gritted teeth. "Or I will be forced to shoot you, I will not ask again."

"As you wish," Rivera said, putting his hands on his head slowly. Jay started to walk towards him.

"Get on your knees, now!" Jay said, as he went behind Rivera to put the cuffs on him, but Rivera didn't move so Jay kicked the back of his knee, forcing him to go down on his knees. He put his gun in its holster and pulled out the cuffs and put them on Rivera as tight as they could go before dragging him so he would be facing him.

"What did you do to her? Where the hell is she?" Jay's anger was tipping over the edge now.

"You know, you really shouldn't handle the people you arrest like this," Rivera said in a calm manner. Jay grabbed him by the collar of shirt and pulled him close to him.

"If you don't tell me where she is, so help me, I will make you wish you had never been born." Jay spat.

"She a friend of yours?" Rivera asked, interest piqued, searching for any reaction from Jay.

"Tell. Me. Right. Now," Jay hissed at him.

"You love her. You're in love with her," Rivera laughed, and Jay threw him to the floor.

"Where the hell is she?!" he shouted, and Rivera somehow managed to get himself back on his knees. He didn't reply to Jay this time, but his eyes were telling. Jay followed the other man's line of sight to the river, and it clicked. Hailey was in the river.

"You evil son of a bitch!" Jay snarled, kicking Rivera square in the chest to make sure he would stay right where he was and also because he hurt his wife.

Jay could hear voices in the distance that sounded like Intelligence as he ran down to the edge of the river, and without a second thought, he dived in. He didn't care about the weight of the Kevlar vest, the gun in the holster on his side, his shoes, or his phone in his pocket. All he cared about was getting Hailey out of the river.

It didn't take him long to find her, a couple of seconds maybe. He swam straight over to her, to find her unconscious. He got her in his arms and tried to swim to the surface with her only for him to be pulled back.

There was something attached to Hailey's leg. It looked like a rope, he didn't know how he did it, but with one pull, the rope came loose from whatever it was attached to and he untangled it from her foot so he could swim them both to the surface.

When he got to the surface, he saw the rest of intelligence with Rivera, obviously confused as to where Jay and Hailey were since Rivera decided he wasn't going to talk anymore.

"Kev, Ruz, over here!" Jay shouted for their help and their heads turned to find Jay in the water, Hailey unconscious in his arms. Kevin and Adam both rushed over to help him get Hailey up and out of the water.

Kim followed behind them, face full of fear, eyes welling up with tears at the sight of her friend being pulled out of the freezing cold water, whiter than a ghost. Kevin was the one to pull Hailey out, Adam helping Jay up since the Kevlar and everything else he was wearing made it harder for him to pull himself up.

Kim rushed to Hailey's side as Kev laid her on the ground and checked for a pulse. She looked up at Kev, tears spilling from her eyes as she shook her head. Kev let out a shaky breath, tears falling from his own eyes.

Jay caught the end of the interaction as Adam had finally helped him out and helped him get off his vest and holsters.

"N-no," Jays voice shook as he rushed to Haileys side, kind of pushing Kim out of his way in his panic and checked her pulse for himself before hastily ripping off her vest, blowing two rescue breaths into her mouth, and then starting compressions on her chest.

"Jay," Kim whispered, putting her hand on his shoulder only to be pushed off.

"No, no, not like this," he pleaded, a sob working its way into his voice. "It can't happen like this," he said desperately, moving to blow air into Hailey's mouth.

"Jay, you were under there with her for at least ninety seconds, and who knows how long she was under before you got to her." Kim's voice shook.

"NO, I- I have to try, I h- have to, s-she can't, she's not, no," he continued with the compressions and then leaned down to blow more air into her mouth.

"Come on, Hailey, come on baby," he whispered, going back to doing compressions again.

"Jay," Kim tried again. "Jay she's-" Kim's sentence was cut off by the sound of coughing and spluttering. Of Hailey coughing and spluttering.

"Hey, hey, you're okay, you're okay," Jay's voice was shaking, and he pulled Hailey up into his arms. Everyone let out the biggest sighs of relief as they watched Hailey start to breathe again. Jay had never felt such overwhelming relief like this in his life.

"W-what?" was all Hailey could manage to say. There was pain in every inch of her body, her vision was blurry, all the voices around her were muffled, and she didn't know what was happening, but she could feel someone's arms around her. No, she could feel Jay's arms around her and the familiar feeling of his strong arms encircling her gave her an instant feeling of comfort.

She leant back into his arms, into his warmth. She was freezing and drenched. She couldn't really remember why; her memory was foggy, and nothing was making any sense. She could make out the sounds of sirens getting closer and felt Jay move behind her which made her groan and scrunch her eyes up in discomfort.

"The ambulance is here, baby," he told her. "You're gonna be okay, I promise."

The ambulance pulled up and two paramedics jumped out and made their way towards them, one with a backboard and stretcher with blankets on top, and the other with the medical bag. They told Jay that he had to move from behind her and lay her on the ground so they could get her on the back board and onto the stretcher.

Kim took the blankets off the top of the stretcher and wrapped one around Jay's shoulders as Kev and Adam helped the paramedics lift Hailey onto the back board and get her on the stretcher. Jay gave Kim a small smile.

"Kim, a-about earlier, when she wasn't breathing, I-"

"Jay, you don't have to say anything., I understand. If it was Adam in Hailey's place then I'm pretty sure, no, I know that I would have acted the same way," Kim said, cutting him off. "The most important thing now is that you brought her back. She's alive and breathing, and she's going to be okay," Kim finished, and Jay pulled her into a hug, neither of them caring that he was still drenched, and he gave her a quick kiss on the temple.

"Go be with your girl," Kim told him, handing him the other blankets for Hailey after pulling away from the hug. Jay gave her another small smile and made his way to Hailey's side as they lifted up the back board and loaded her onto the stretcher. He put the blankets over her and got into the back of the ambulance after one of the paramedics.

"We'll give you guys an escort," Adam told Jay and the paramedics before shutting the back door of the ambulance and going to his car to help the patrol and Kev with the escort for Hailey. Lights and sirens took over the streets of Chicago in the efforts to get their girl to the hospital quickly and safely, before hypothermia set in. Those blankets could only keep her warm for so long.
