Notes: Before we go into the 6th and final chapter of this fic just wanted to thank everyone for all the love they've shown on this fic for the past 6 weeks. We know now that my theory wasn't correct but I still had so much fun writing this and I'm glad that you all like it and have enjoyed reading it as well.

like always please take note of the trigger warnings in the first chapter before you continue reading and enjoy

The next morning, Jay woke up at around 8 am, later than he usually did. Considering that he had been sleeping on a horrible hospital cot or alone on the couch, he wasn't too surprised.

Hailey was still sound asleep in his arms, exactly how she'd fallen asleep last night with the exception of her curls being a little bit wilder and messier. He loved it when she wore her hair kinda messy and left her curls out. He loved running his hands through them when he kissed her and making it even wilder.

He slowly moved his arm out from under her and got out of the bed as carefully as possible so that he didn't wake her up. He pulled on some sweatpants and a t-shirt and then made his way out to the living room, closing the door almost all the way shut.

He was met with the mess that they had left on the coffee table the night before, and he made quick work of cleaning it up, throwing away the trash and putting the used plates and glasses into the dishwasher, and closing it back up to be started later.

He had gotten so used to getting up and going straight to the hospital for the last ten days that he wasn't quite sure what to do now that he didn't have anything to do. He had the next couple of days off of work to make sure that Hailey was settled back at home, and she had a mandatory two weeks off, but after that she could come back in her own time.

To pass the time, he decided he was going to go down to the parking garage and grab the other bags that they had left in there last night. He pulled on his trainers and threw on a hoodie and quickly checked on Hailey, still sound asleep, and then left the apartment as quietly as he could.

He was only gone for a maximum of five minutes, but when he got back, he found Hailey in the kitchen with a glass of water in her hand so she could take some of her meds. He placed the bags on the couch carefully, so he didn't break anything in the one with the gifts that Makayla made.

"Hi." She gave him a small smile as he walked over to her, sleep still evident in her voice.

"Hey, you, okay?" He asked, and she nodded.

"I'm okay, I woke up in a bit of pain so I figured that I should take some meds," she told him. "Did you go for a run?"

"Just to go get the bags, I didn't want to leave you for too long."

"You can go on your run, you know. I think I'm going to get back in bed anyways."

"You sure you'll be okay by yourself?"

"I'll be asleep so I'll be fine, and besides you can make waffles when you get back," she said, smiling.

"Hmm, that sounds like a good plan," he said as he leant down to kiss her.

"I'll see you in like an hour, okay?"

"Okay, wake me up when the waffles are ready," she said, and walked back towards the bedroom, still slowly but a little faster than she had been yesterday. Maybe sleeping in her own bed had done her some good.

"Copy you." He smiled and grabbed earbuds from the counter and left for his run.

About an hour and a half, Jay was back home. He shut the front door as quietly as he could so that he didn't wake Hailey up and then dropped his phone keys and ear buds all on the kitchen counter. He went to check on Hailey only to find her sprawled across the bed, her hair all over the place. It looked like she had kicked the covers off since they were more off the bed and on the floor than they were on her.

He quickly gathered them from the floor and put them over her, as gently as he could, so that he didn't hurt her or wake her up. She looked so peaceful back in her own bed. He watched her sleep for a couple minutes and then his stomach started to grumble so he decided it was probably a good time to start making waffles.

He left as quietly as he could. He wanted her to rest for as long as possible, so he pulled the door almost all the way shut so that if she called out for him or had a nightmare or something along those lines then he would be able to hear her.

He went back to their kitchen and got out everything he needed to make waffles, trying to be as quiet as possible. He made his normal waffle mix although he made it bigger than he usually did so that he could spoil Hailey on her first morning back. He wanted to make sure he did everything right.

Once he had made the mix, he put it in the fridge to set and went back into the bedroom, grabbed some fresh clothes as quietly as he could, and made his way to their bathroom to take a quick shower. He only took about fifteen minutes, but when he came out of the bathroom wearing only a pair of sweatpants, he found Hailey awake in their bed.

"Hi," she said as she saw him, she was lying in the middle of their bed wrapped in the duvet and he smiled at how cute and how normal she looked. In that moment, it felt like any other morning of a day off where he had woken up before her and showered after his run only to find her awake and waiting for him in their bed when he came out.

"Hey, you, how are you feeling now?" he asked, sitting down on the bed next to her.

"Better, a lot better now that…" she trailed off, her eyes scanning his bare chest which caused him to laugh. He leant over and bruised a fallen strand of hair out of her face and kissed her softly. When he pulled back, she pouted.

"What?"

"Kiss me again," she told him, and he complied, and it wasn't just a quick kiss this time, their lips moved in sync as he moved on the bed getting closer to her. After a bit, he pulled back and she pouted again.

"Hey, no more pouting, I've got waffles to make," he told her, and her eyes lit up.

"I forgot about that, let's go make some waffles!" she said, sitting up a little too fast, and she winced at the pain that ran through her body.

"Hails? You okay?" he said, rushing around to the other side of the bed so that he could help her sit up and he sat next to her, waiting to see if she needed anything else.

"Yeah, yeah, I just moved a little too fast."

"You gotta be careful, baby, okay? The waffles are still going to be made whether it takes you two minutes to get out there or twenty."

"I'll be more careful next time, I- I, uh, this sounds stupid, I just kinda forgot that I was hurt with waking up to you in the shower and kissing me and then talking about making waffles. I just want to be okay; I hate not being able to do things normally. I just want things to go back to the way they were," she sighed, tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Hey, hey, it's okay, you're going to get better, you're already doing so much better than they expected, don't put so much pressure on yourself to get better, Hailey. It'll happen and it might take some time, but everything will be back to normal soon, I promise," he told her, rubbing her back gently. "Right now, the best normal thing we've got is making waffles, so do you think you've got enough energy to help or do you just wanna sit on the couch and watch."

"Can I try to help at least? I just wanna feel some sort of normal." Her eyes weren't meeting his.

"Of course, you can, Hails, just as long as you'll let me know if anything becomes too much for you and you'll go sit on the couch to rest?"

"Yeah, I'll let you know, I promise"

"You want me to help you up?" he asked, standing.

"Yeah, please." She gave him a half smile; he could tell these injuries were really bringing her down so he hoped that making waffles together would cheer her up. He helped her lift herself off the bed and stand up, holding his arms out like a barrier while she caught her balance.

"Thanks."

"Can you go out by yourself?"

"I think so, I did earlier but I didn't hurt myself earlier so can you just stay behind me and make sure I don't fall?"

"I got you, Hails, let's go make some waffles, huh?" He caught her smile getting bigger as she turned around to walk out of the room. Jay grabbed her pillow to put on the couch for her and followed close behind her, making sure that if she wobbled or fell then he was there to catch her, but they made their way to the kitchen without any trouble, albeit slowly.

"I made the mix already," he told her as he got it out of the fridge and placed it on the counter. "But you can pick out all the things to put in it or with them"

"Chocolate chips?" she asked, with a smile on her face.

"Hmmm," Jay said as he opened the cupboard to see if they had any and pulled out three little bags, one with white chocolate chips, one with milk chocolate, and a third with dark chocolate.

"Well, would you look at that?" he said as he placed all three on the counter in front of her so she could open the one she wanted. He then bent down and got the waffle maker from one of the lower cupboards.

"Can I have all three?" she asked as he placed the waffle maker on the counter and set it up for it to be used.

"Triple chocolate? If that's what you want, then of course, you can have anything you want, baby," he said, and leant over to press a kiss into her hair.

"Strawberries, too?"

"Of course," he told her and went to get strawberries out of the fridge along with blueberries, raspberries, and bananas. And of course, he couldn't forget the whipped cream. He placed all off the stuff on the side and turned to Hailey.

"You wanna help me get this all cut up?" he asked, and she nodded.

"I'll do the strawberries, you do the bananas," she told him, as they were the only things that needed to be cut up and he nodded and got out two chopping boards and two knives and handed one of each to her, taking the others for himself. Once they were done cutting and eating some of the fruit, Jay moved over to the waffle maker and switched it on.

"I'll put the mixture in, and you put the amount of chocolate you want in, does that sound good?"

"Sounds amazing," she said, and went to one of the drawers and got out scissors to cut open the little bags of chocolate chips since she didn't know if she had enough strength to tear them open and she didn't want to try and ruin the moment they were having.

Jay poured some of the mix into the waffle maker and watched as Hailey had the biggest smile on her face as she sprinkled the different kinds of chocolate chips into her waffles.

"Looks good, huh?" she said.

"Looks amazing," he told her as he pulled it closed.

"I missed waffles," she told him. "Well, I missed your waffles, the hospital ones tasted like cardboard." She laughed.

"Oh, yeah, they were disgusting," he said, pulling a face as he remembered how on the second morning that Hailey was awake, he'd surprised her with waffles from the hospital cafeteria to try and cheer her up about being in hospital, but they'd ended up being the worst waffles either of them had ever tasted.

"Are you having chocolate chips in yours too?" she said, pouring some of the dark chocolate ones in her hand and then into her mouth.

"I think I might, so don't eat them all now and you can have whatever's left over once I've used them," he told her, and she gasped.

"Mr. Health Nut is not only having waffles, but he's having chocolate chip waffles? Wow," she giggled, and he rolled his eyes at her.

"I'm not that much of a health nut," he said while he shook his head.

"Okay, sure, Mr. I'll take the oat bar over a snickers."

"Because they taste better and it's a bonus that they are healthier."

"In no sane world does an oat bar taste better than a snickers bar," she told him as the machine beeped, signalling that her waffles were now done. Jay turned the machine off and pulled a plate out of the cupboard before opening the machine and putting the waffle on it and placing it on the counter.

"That looks so good."

"Please don't burn yourself," he said, a small smirk on his face as he poured more waffle mix into the machine to make a waffle for himself.

"It was one time! Oh my god." She shook her head but with a smile on her face as she sprinkled the chocolate chips on for him and he closed the machine, switching it back on and let it cook his waffles.

"You're never going to let me live that down, are you?" she asked.

"Well, if you go into your waffle while it's still hot, you're going to burn your mouth no matter how good it looks, and then it won't taste very nice, will it? And as cute as the way you talked with a burnt tongue was, I don't think you really want to burn your tongue again, huh?"

"It was not cute," she said as she arranged the fruit on the plate, mostly strawberries since those were her favourite. Jay grabbed the whipped cream can and shook it before opening it.

"It was the cutest thing ever," he told her, laughing. "Open," he told her, and she opened her mouth so that he could give her some whipped cream. "Good?" he asked as he saw her eyes light up at the taste of it.

"So good." He managed to understand through her mouth filled with whipped cream "I missed this, the whipped cream and us making waffles together," she told him as she finished arranging the fruit on her plate and held her hand out for him to pass the whipped cream after he had put some in his mouth as well.

"I missed it all too, Hails," he told her genuinely as he picked up the bags of chocolate chips that still had some left in and sprinkled them on her waffles for her.

"Thanks," she smiled, her smile so big at the sight of everything on her plate. "I, uh- I don't think I'm going to be able to carry this over…" she trailed off.

"I'll take it for you, it's okay," he told her as the machine beeped again, signalling that Jays waffle was now cooked, he switched off the machine and plated up his waffle as fast as he could and then grabbed cutlery out of the drawer for Hailey and carried her plate over to the couch for her to set it down on the coffee table along with her knife and fork.

She had put her pillow where she wanted it and had managed to sit down by herself.

"Look at you go, huh? Sitting down all by yourself?" He praised her which caused her to smile shyly. "I'm gonna go make up my waffle really quick, you okay by yourself?"

"I think I'm more than okay," she gestured to her filled plate on the coffee table, and he nodded happily, glad to see her happy. He made up his waffle quickly, not caring too much about presentation and made his way back to the couch where Hailey was tucking into her waffle like she hadn't eaten anything in days.

"You really weren't lying when you said you missed my waffles," he said, which caused her to laugh.

"I was dead serious, this is the most amazing thing I've ever had in my mouth," she told him as he sat next to her.

"That's the most amazing thing you've ever had in your mouth huh?" he said, catching her off guard and causing her to let out the loudest laugh he had heard from her in a long time.

"Stop it!" she said, shaking her head and still laughing.

"What? I was just asking a question." He acted innocent.

"Mhmm, yeah, okay," she hummed sceptically.

"What? I was!" He exclaimed, still keeping up the innocent act.

"Shut up, and eat your waffles," she told him, voice half stern but with a smile on her face, and he did what he was told. He was so happy that they had fallen back into their usual banter so quickly and that Hailey was starting to act more and more like herself.

He switched the tv on so they could watch something while they were eating because watching shows or movies and eating was the only plans that Jay had for the next couple of days that he would be home with her. He searched for the show that they watched weekly and pressed play on the couple of episodes of the show they watched while Hailey was in the hospital.

It didn't take them too long to finish their breakfast/lunch waffles and after they had caught up on the episodes, they missed they cleared away everything and of course they were back on the couch cuddling and watching tv.

Later that day, and almost a whole season of a new Netflix show later, Jay heard Hailey's stomach make a noise which caused him to laugh.

"You hungry, Hails?"

"A little," she said, looking up at him from where she was laid in his lap.

"Sit up for a sec," he said, and she did and watched as he grabbed his phone off the coffee table and dialled a number.

"What are you-" she was cut off as Jay started ordering food, Chinese food to be exact. A huge grin spread across her face as she realised what he was doing.

"Should be here in about thirty minutes, which is just enough time for us to finish this episode," he told her.

"You're amazing, I love you," she told him as she went back to her position, leaning against his chest.

"I love you, too, baby," he said, pressing a kiss into her hair.

In the evening, after they had eaten and finished the whole season of the new show they found, Jay helped Hailey shower and get ready for bed. Once she was all sorted and in bed, he got himself ready, which was basically just stripping down to his boxer, turning off all the lights except the lamp on his side of the bed, and then getting into bed next to Hailey.

He had watched her while he was helping her throughout the night, and he could tell something was bothering her, but he waited until she was ready and in bed to ask. He climbed into the bed next to her where she was sitting and scrolling through some 'get well soon' messages.

"You okay, Hailey? It seemed like something was bothering you earlier?" he questioned.

"I- I, uh, it's nothing, I'm fine," she told him, looking up from her phone and giving him a quick smile before looking back down at her phone.

"You sure? Because it feels like you've been thinking about something all evening, and the more you think about it the more it bothers you," he explained.

"It's nothing, it's stupid, really."

"But it's bothering you, so I don't care how stupid you think it is. If something's bothering you then we talk about it, we do our thing."

"I, uh, I can't shake the feeling that you lied, well, not lied, but you didn't tell me the whole truth," she explained, her eyes not meeting his.

"About what happened, with me and how badly I got hurt," she sighed. "See? I told you it's stupid," she said when she was met with silence.

"Hailey I…" he trailed off because she wasn't wrong, he hadn't told her the full truth but it's not like that's what she needed to hear after waking up, and it's not like he wanted to relive it straight after getting her back. And then more time passed, and she was doing so well with her recovery, and he didn't want to drag it all back up for her. Her eyes met his and she sucked in a breath.

"I'm not wrong," she realised. "I'm not wrong," she repeated. "You were never going to tell me what actually happened, were you?"

"Hailey, baby, just-"

"Why? You had five whole days to tell me what actually happened, and you didn't? I deserve to know what happened to me, Jay," her voice broke as she told him. "It's not your thing to keep a secret," she let out a breath.

"I was going to tell you" He started. "I was, but then you were doing so well, and I didn't want to hurt you anymore than you already were," he sighed.

"I'm strong, Jay, and I don't go down easy, you know that" she told him, tears in her eyes.

"Hails," he trailed off, not really knowing what to say and she looked at him waiting for him to continue.

"Yeah?"

"What you went through, what your body went through, that, that wasn't easy, it was so…" he started to tell her, tears glazing over his eyes.

"It was so what, Jay? What's so bad that you can't tell me?" she said still slightly angry that he hadn't told her the full truth. "Why did you think that you had the ri-"

"Your heart stopped. Twice," he cut her off, eyes glazing over.

"W-what?"

"You weren't breathing when I pulled you out of the water, Hailey, you didn't have a pulse, I had to do compressions and mouth to mouth and somehow, by the grace of God, it worked, and you coughed up some of the water and then you were in and out of consciousness the whole way to Med. After you got in the ED, your heart stopped again, they had to shock it twice, probably more, they dragged me out of the room, so I didn't see," he sighed.

"J-Jay I- I-"

"It's okay." He gave her a sad smile. "You're alive, and you're safe now, and that's all that matters." he told her, tears falling down his cheeks.

"Was that it? What else did they have to do?" she asked in a quiet voice, not meeting his eyes.

"Hailey, I don't-"

"Please," she cut him off, her voice breaking slightly. "Please, Jay, I want to hear it, I- I need to."

Jay sighed. "From the beginning or from after they restarted your heart?"

"From the beginning, I- I need to know it all," she told him, a couple of tears rolling down her cheeks.

"When I got there, I found Rivera starting to limp away, and you were nowhere to be found. It took me a couple minutes to arrest him because he wouldn't comply and then he did and that's when I figured out you were in the water so of course I jumped in after, Kevlar still on, gun still in the holster," he told her, which caused Hailey to snicker.

"You jumped in the Chicago River, gear still on?"

"Yeah, well, I mean it's you."

"I love you," she told him, and he leant over and kissed her gently.

"I love you," he replied.

"After I got the rope off and got to the surface, with the Kevlar and everything still on and weighing me down, I couldn't get you out myself and the others had arrived, so Kev pulled you out and Adam pulled me out. I didn't know you had stopped breathing at that point, I was too preoccupied with just getting you out if the water and then Adam, he helped me up and helped get off all my holsters and vest and then…" he stopped for a second and took a breath, trying to prepare himself for what he was about to say.

"And then I saw Kim take her hand off your neck and shake her head no, signalling that you didn't have a pulse," he told her, some tears falling down his cheeks and Hailey leaned over and wiped them away gently, ignoring the pain in her ribs as she did and then waited for Jay to continue telling her what happened.

"It, uh, it wasn't my finest moment but when I saw Kim shake her head no all I could think about what how she had to be wrong, so I rushed to your side, pretty much shoving Kim out of the way, and checked for myself, and then that's when I started doing CPR and started your heart again," he told her, taking hold of her hand as he saw the tears starting to fall from her eyes.

"Hailey, I can stop if it's too much."

"J-just keep going, I- I need to hear it," she sniffled.

"Baby, are you sure?"

"I'm sure," she told him, and he nodded.

"I told you already how you were dipping in and out of consciousness on the way to Med and you were okay when you got there and then your heart stopped…" he trailed off. "Hearing that monitor flat line while it was connected to you was probably one of the worst things I've ever heard in my life." He took another deep breath. "But they shocked your heart and it started again, and I think they did some x-rays to check your lungs too, I wasn't in the room at that point, Kev and Ruzek had dragged me out. Like I said, not one of my finest moments," he sighed.

"I'm sorry," she said, her lips quivering, eyes staring down into her lap.

"Hey, hey, no, don't you apologise, you have absolutely nothing to be sorry for, you hear me? Hailey? Look at me?" he said, and gently lifted her chin up so that her eyes would meet his. "You have nothing to be sorry for, you understand?" he asked softly, and she nodded her head.

"Keep going?" he asked, and she nodded again.

"That's when they rushed you into surgery because they had seen water in your lungs in the x rays, and then we waited and waited for six hours, not knowing if you were alive." He paused for a second to wipe the tears that had rolled down his cheeks.

"And when I was finally able to see you, they told me that your heart could give out again at any point, that you could have brain damage because of the amount of time that you didn't have oxygen for, or that you might never wake up and the only thing that would be keeping you alive would be the vent." He let out a shaky breath.

"And then Dr Marcel said that it would be best for you to wake up within a week and the days went by so fast and I was so certain that I was going to lose you Hailey, and then you woke up and the last thing I wanted to do was traumatise you even more and relive all of that again," he explained.

"I am so sorry that I didn't tell you, Hailey, I am, I just-"

"Jay, it's okay," she whispered. "I get it now, thank you for telling me" She looked at him with sad eyes. "I'm sorry I was horrible to you about it…"

"Hailey, you had every right to be upset, it's okay," he let out a small sigh.

"You're never going to lose me, you know that?" she told him.

"I almost did."

"But you didn't, I'm here, I'm alive and I'm not going anywhere," she said, her voice soft.

"Come here," he told her, and she moved herself into his arms slowly so that she didn't hurt herself. She snuggled into his chest as he pulled the covers over them and then pressed a kiss into her hair and they laid there in silence for a while till Jay spoke again.

"I can't lose you, Hailey."

"I know, baby, and you're not going to, I promise," she told him, and he sighed.

"You can't promise that. Our job, it's so dangerous, anything could happen."

"And that's why we're careful and we do our jobs right and protect each other."

"I couldn't protect you."

"Don't do that, what happened is not your fault, you got me out of there, you restarted my heart, Jay, I'm alive because of you," she said, tears rolling down both of their cheeks again.

"What you did, giving me compressions even though I was basically dead, it saved my life, so you do not blame yourself for what happened because it is not your fault, it was that sick bastard's fault and no one else's," Hailey continued and moved her hand from his chest and wiped the tears from his cheeks. "It's not your fault, Jay."

"If I had made the decision to go that way instead-"

"No, no, stop it, neither of us would've known what was going to happen or what way he went, and this isn't anyone's fault but his, and he's in a jail cell, and he's going to rot for the rest of his life, and we are going to spend the rest of our lives together."

"We're supposed to be together forever," he repeated her words from the night they found out about the FBI's bugs.

"Exactly, we're supposed to be together forever, so neither of us is going to lose the other. We're probably going to get hurt at some points along the way, that's kinda inevitable with our jobs, but we're not losing each other." He nodded at her words.

"Just please don't ever scare me like that again."

"I'll try my best not to, besides you get a taste of your own medicine," she joked, trying to cheer him up. He laughed at what she said and shook his head.

"Guess I did, huh?" he laughed. "I'll try my best not to be a bullet magnet as Vanessa used to say," he said while giving her a small smile.

"Oh, god, she's got so much to catch up on when she gets back," Hailey laughed.

"I think we might break her," Jay added, laughing.

"Oh, definitely, she used to go on about how me and you can't be just friends, so how are we going to tell her that not only did we get together but we got married?"

"We're gonna put the poor girl into shock," Jay said, laughing.

"She'll be able to stay here for a bit, right? After she comes out of undercover because it's going to take her a while to get back on her feet, and obviously I don't have the old place anymore and she stayed with me there and-"

"Hails," he cut her off. "She's family, I love her as much as you do, and she is more than welcome to stay here for as long as she likes." Hailey sighed out of relief.

"Okay, good, because I wasn't sure if you would want to have her here or something," she told him.

"I think we all got a lot closer to her than any of us ever expected, especially you. She's like the little sister I never had, and she is always welcome here no matter what, Hails." Hailey gave him a smile.

"I've never bonded with someone like the way I did with her, we just clicked, and she was suddenly one of my best friends. I don't think I've ever got that close with someone that fast, ever, other than you," she told him.

"Other than me? So, I'm special, huh?"

"No, I just married you for kicks." She rolled her eyes at him, and he laughed.

"Oh, good, because I did the same thing," he shot back, which made her laugh before she let out a huge yawn.

"Maybe it's time we try and sleep, now?" he questioned when her yawn made him yawn.

"Hmmm, probably," she said, and he rolled over really quick and turned the lamp on the side of his bed off before rolling back and wrapping his arms around her again.

"Hold me all night?" she asked, leaning into his chest.

"I got you, baby, always," he told her as he held her close. It wasn't long until both of them were sound asleep, wrapped up in each other's arms and loved and safe, which was their favourite place to be. They had each other always, and nothing was ever going to change that.
