"Is this from the good fridge or the dead fridge?" Detective Jane Rizzoli frowned down at half of a tuna sandwich staring back at her from a very sturdy glass container in her lap. Maura had definitely packed this because if it was Jane's own mother it would have been wrapped in the cheapest kind of paper towel and shoved into a plastic bag.
"Cold air is cold air, Jane." Dr. Maura Isles mumbled, barely looking up from her microscope but unable to hide a small smirk.
"Ugh." Jane picked at the sandwich like a child. Maura finally took the hint, picked up the lid to the container and slammed it down on top of the sandwich in Jane's lap.
"Go order something from the cafe if you're so worried about it." Maura huffed.
Jane clicked her tongue. "My mother is down there." She nervously picked at her fingernails and leaned heavily on the edge of the desk. Maura picked up the container and walked it back to the small fridge in the corner of her main office. "And I really don't feel like answering her questions right now." Jane continued. "You know how she gets." She pouted, her brown curls falling in front of her face. She stared at the strands of hair, her exhaustion more real as she made no attempt to push them out of her face. She closed her eyes for the first time in what felt like many days, and listened to the clicks of Maura's heels heading back her way.
Maura sat back at her workspace chair, rolled slowly to Jane, and placed her hands on Jane's lap. Jane shivered at the coldness of Maura's physical touch, as it always was when she worked down here in the freezer all day. However, what really drew Jane to Maura was the overwhelming confidence she gave her every moment they were together, even now. Jane admitted, long ago, that when Maura was not in the room, she felt incomplete. The room felt like chaos. Everything felt less real. But when they were working cases together, studying clues at her desk or when Jane found herself roaming Maura's morgue at all hours of the night, it was like Jane's world made sense. Jane felt proud to be in the same space as Maura.
"You're going to have to tell her about us eventually."
Jane's thoughts were interrupted by the calm yet stressful statement Maura had just uttered. She sighed heavily, her shoulders slumping over more, and her thumb gently rubbing the top of Maura's hand. "I know. But I'm just not ready. You know how she is, the whole precinct will know before the day is over, and who knows what Sarg will do when he finds out."
"Well, is it really such a bad thing?" Maura turned from Jane, pulling her hands away and collecting some papers from her workspace, filing them in a nearby cabinet.
Jane arched an eyebrow at her, her jaw halfway open. "Is that a… Maura, I'm the lead homicide detective at this precinct and you are my medical examiner. We'd never get to work together again." Jane's face fell in defeat. "One of us would be transferred."
Maura shut the filing cabinet harder than intended and took both of Jane's hands in her own again, kissing them softly. She smiled when Jane's eyes met hers. Jane's worried face was one of Maura's weaknesses. Though it wasn't really worry as it was passion. Jane wanted everything to be perfect. She wanted everyone to be happy. And when things didn't go her way or she felt like she was going to disappoint someone, she hid it with childish behavior. It was cute. But despite the behavior, it was the thoughts behind it that made Maura really fall for Jane. Her work ethic was impeccable, which reflected in her success as a detective. A female detective in a man's world, but you wouldn't know it with the people that surrounded her and supported her. Jane's team would go down with the ship, Maura included. "I know. I'm sorry. That was insensitive." She caressed her cheek. "But are you even sure we will be transferred? Brandon and Terry didn't get transferred last year." Maura tried to sound positive.
"Maura, they both quit like a week later to move to Thailand." Jane's lips thinned.
"Bad choice in my opinion. If it was me I would have gone to Paris. They have better food and…" Maura cut herself off when she saw Jane's face. Unapologetically not impressed or interested in where Maura would have rather run away to than Thailand. "Sorry. But honestly, if it doesn't interfere with our work, then why would they transfer us?"
Jane's face buried itself in thought. Then she smiled suddenly. "We can just not tell anyone! As long as we keep it professional. No sideways looks, no talking about what happens after work, no talking to my mother." Her voice became stern. "We can do this."
Maura sauntered over to Jane, taking her hands slowly and placing them on her hips. She leaned in close to Jane, eyeing her features, her chin, her neck, and her collarbones sticking out of her v-neck blouse. She could feel the bumps rise up on Jane's skin.
"We can be… professional." Maura stated, yet hinted at a question. Knowing in her gut that Jane would never be able to contain herself. And truthfully she would not either. But that didn't mean she couldn't have a little fun. She ran her hands down Jane's back, slowly following the ridges of her muscles. Jane shivered.
"Maura." Jane breathed as their lips brushed close.
"Detective Rizzoli." Maura whispered.
Jane's head fell back so that Maura's lips now grazed her neck. Maura calling her that sent Jane over the edge. She did say they need to be professional.
"I wonder," Maura kissed her neck ever so gently, "when Frost asks what you found down here on the case, what are you going to tell him?" She kissed Jane again, and she felt the vibration of a small moan on her lips.
"Who's Frost?" Jane breathed heavily.
Maura stopped, laid her head on Jane's shoulder, and laughed. "You can't do this!" She lifted her head up to Jane's.
Jane took Maura's cheeks in her palms, feeling the weight of Maura lean into her touch. "Can you blame me?"
Maura smiled. "No. Just as I couldn't blame myself because I would not be able to keep it a secret either." Maura pushed away from Jane and headed to her office casually, the coldness of the room hitting Jane in the face. "Which is why we should just tell Sarg about it." Her voice trailed off, Jane followed quickly.
"I don't want to risk it." Jane leaned against the doorway to Maura's office, crossing her arms to combat the cold. Maura leaned over her desk to input a quick bit of information into her computer. Her blouse fell forward, exposing more of her chest. Jane noticed.
"Then we don't have any other choice but to keep it profess…" Maura caught Jane's gaze and stood, crossing her arms playfully. "Professional." She stated matter of factly. Jane cleared her throat awkwardly.
"I uh…" Jane's phone suddenly rang on her hip.
"Saved by the bell." Maura smirked.
Jane winked when she answered. "Rizzoli." She listened intently, watching Maura's hips gently approach her.
"What's the address?" Jane asked. She stood straighter as Maura came closer than she expected. Wrapping her arms around Jane's waist, mouthing a silent "professional" as a warning. Then Maura nipped at Jane's collarbone with her teeth, soothing it immediately with a kiss. She continued this up Jane's neck. Her hands dropped low on her back, rounding over the edge of Jane's ass.
"Mhmm. Uh… what… what did the officer say when you talked to…" Jane sucked in when Maura bit at her harder. "When you talked to him?" Jane shoved her fist into her mouth to keep from moaning on the phone while she struggled to listen to her Sergeant. "Yeah, sounds good. We'll… we'll…" Jane's core was burning. "Yeah I'm good, sorry. I'll call Frost and go check it out. Okay. Thanks."
Jane smashed her phone closed and grabbed a hold of Maura's face and found her lips immediately. She pushed her back to the edge of the desk until her body was flush to Maura's. Maura's leg lifted between Jane's and her core reacted immediately. Jane kissed Maura everywhere she could between heavy breaths. Maura allowed her to explore her body. She knew she had driven Jane to her edge and she loved it.
As Jane descended down Maura's body a sharp sound interrupted them immediately. Maura's cell phone rang out in the small office. Jane froze. "Fuck."
Maura took a deep breath, just as flustered as Jane, and picked up her phone, sliding it open. "Dr. Isles." She stated. "I'll be there in 15 minutes, thank you."
She sighed heavily. The two of them, red cheeked and flushed, stared at each other with grave concern.
"What are we going to do?" Jane finally asked. Both of them knew damn well they were not going to be able to hide this.
"Well, detective. For now, we have a body. So, let's just do our job and figure it out another day." Maura grabbed her jacket, pausing a moment in front of Jane. She could see in her eyes how worried she was. That perfection that Jane craved was crumbling as they both understood that their relationship would not be able to be kept a secret. One of them would slip up. "Hey." Maura took Jane's chin in her hand, her thumb caressing the line of her jaw. "We can do this at least today. Together." Maura planted a firm final kiss on Jane's lips, grabbed her keys and headed out.
"Fuck." Jane followed soon after.
