Della Mason knew this day would come. It was a day she had not been looking forward to. The day when her husband would glare at her with eyes almost black with rage, his ears closed to all reason and arguments she may have had. The soothing bedroom voice she knew would normally calm him and make him want her even more than usual, had no effect. Her sweet whisperings would draw no response other than to fan the flames of his already dark, angry mood. No, she had never looked forward to this day and now it had arrived, she was at a total loss on how she should proceed.
'For goodness sake Perry, take a deep breath.' Della's advice went unheard, Perry's answer nothing more than a growl. 'Darling please listen to me, everything will be fine, just fine.' The slamming of the study door indicated otherwise. Things were not going to be just fine at all. Della sighed, squared her shoulders and went to the study door, the lions den.
Opening the door, Della was met with a scowl. The deep lines in Perry's forehead appeared to have become worse. With eyebrows knitted together he clenched his teeth.
'Those goddamn hands of his were all over the place!' he raged through gritted teeth.
'Sweetheart'
'Don't sweetheart me!' The waste basket was unceremoniously kicked over.
'Stop acting like a big child!' Della put her hands on her hips defiantly.
'I'm not the child, he was the child! He was nothing more than a boy!' The storm continued. 'How dare he be so cosy, taking liberties with my girl and in my house no less.'
Della again drew in a deep breath and tried to steady her voice. 'Perry. Enough of this,' she reasoned. 'You're going to make yourself ill and over what? A mild flirtation?'
'Mild,' Perry spluttered, 'Mild flirtation? Have you lost your senses woman?!' His fists clenched and unclenched. Della swallowed hard. This was worse than she had ever imagined.
'Perry,' Della tried again softly. 'You need to listen to reason.' She took the decision to walk towards him. Within touching distance, he briefly looked into his wife's eyes and then turned his head away to stare out of the window. 'Perry, listen to me.' Della took his chin in her fingers and manipulated his face to make him look at her again. This needed to be tackled head on, so she lightly stroked his cheek and brushed a thumb across his lips. 'I love you more than life itself, you know that but you're over reacting to this whole situation.' Perry opened his mouth to say something, but Della silenced any words with her mouth on his. For long moments she kissed him until she felt him finally start to relax and his arms wrapped about her, pulling her closer and moulding her into him. When the storm in his eyes ebbed, and the furrowed brow began to disappear, she pulled back slightly.
'Now are you ready to listen?' Perry merely nodded. 'Good. Lily was always going with a date to her prom. All he did was kiss her on the cheek and give her a corsage before taking her hand in the crook of his arm and escorting her to his car. That Mr Mason couldn't even be classed as a mild flirtation. David was being a gentleman, just like you would expect him to be.'
'He'd better be a goddamned gentleman with her, or I'll break his scrawny neck!'
'Ah, ah, ah. Stop! We talked about this before. What did we decide?'
'That I wouldn't over react'
'That's right. And what is Lily?'
'A young lady. But…..' Della raised her eyebrow in warning. Perry snapped his mouth closed. Della pushed him into his chair and slid onto his lap, snaking her arms about his neck.
'And young ladies date young boys.' Della's mouth began working at his vulnerable spot behind the moaned but gave up the fight. He knew the battle was lost but fired one last parting shot as his nimble fingers glided up Della's skirt, and muttered,
"Yeah, well handing my daughter over to her date was like handing over a million dollar violin to a Gorilla!'**
