authors note
Hi! Sorry to make you read this but its important since I made some changes to this story. as little as I update it I do think about this story a lot and have a lot of ideas for it. Its just difficult to get the words down since Im at a point of the story that is difficult for me to write.
most recent changes include:
there is no chief of the southern water tribe, only the northern chief and he controls both tribes. Hokota serves as chief military officer of the southern water tribe. Therefore Katara and Sokka are noble children, not prince(ss)
Zuko has been introduced a little earlier.
future changes will reveal themselves as i release rewritten chapters.
I hope you all still love this story.

Prologue
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Our world was divided into those who could control each of the four elements, and each nation lived by their own ideologies, while respecting that of the other nations. None of them considered themselves to be greater than the other. One person, imbued with the power of all four elements, served as peacekeeper of the four nations, and maintained balance between our world and the spirits. This person was reincarnated after death again and again, being born into each nation in sequence: earth, fire, air and water.
This is how the world worked for millennia, until one dark day, when the fire nation attacked.
With the aid of a powerful comet, Fire lord Sozin launched a decisive assault against the air Nomads, wiping out nearly all airbenders in the process. However, he failed to destroy the avatar- the then twelve year old Aang- and his master Monk Gyatso.
At the time of the attack Aang and Gyatso were away from their home at the southern temple, heading towards the north pole to begin Aang's training in waterbending. They discovered the devastation of their people when they stopped to visit the northern temple, finding the sanctuary charred and smoking with the remains of their people scattered around. Firebenders patrolled the grounds, searching for survivors. Devastated, Aang and Gyatso turned back, returning home to the southern temple, only to discover that everyone they had known had also been murdered, completely wiped off the face of the earth.
The avatar spirit holds a certain power, which grants even an inexperienced avatar the powers of all the avatars before them, only triggered when the avatar is in great danger or emotional distress. It causes the eyes and airbender tattoos to glow, and some spiritual monuments across the globe react similarly when the avatar enters this state. When Aang realized that his entire people had been wiped out, he became so angry that he entered the avatar state, alerting the fire lord that the avatar was still alive. Sozin began searching for the avatar immediately in an attempt to eliminate him before he interfered with his plans for world domination, but he was never able to find him.
Aang and Gyatso went into hiding in the safety of Ba Sing Se, the earth kingdom capital protected by three impenetrable walls. They hid there for 20 years, while depression and grief prevented aang from learning the other elements. Instead he suffered with disturbing flashbacks and distressing dreams. Meanwhile, the earth king forced Aang to reproduce with earth kingdom girls in an attempt to rebuild the air nomads.
Fire Lord Sozin passed away in his sleep at an old age, and his son Azulon ascended to the throne. In the years that followed, Aang finally began to break out of his grief and depression and began to learn Waterbending in the Northern Water Tribe. He mastered the art in five years, still struggling with his depression, but seeming to be on an upward trajectory. But, as all men do, Gyatso died of old age, and Aang was thrown into another bout of intense depression with the realization that he was the only Airbender left. He searched for an Earthbending teacher for a few years, and learned the art in seven years. He had particular difficulty in this area, since earth is the element opposite to air. The next element to learn was Firebending, but the entire Fire Nation was looking for him, and he could not find a teacher for many years. He instead learned Firebending by studying the sun until he stumbled upon the ancient sun warriors, a race of firebenders who produced fire from the breath, and not from emotion. He was taught by the dragon Masters Ran and Shaw. At this time, Aang became impotent and he finished his fertile years as a father of fifty-three, grandfather of seventy-nine.
Meanwhile, Azulon's wife gave birth to the Crown Prince Iroh.
Once Aang had mastered Firebending, he must kill fire lord Azulon and restore balance. He finally did this when Iroh was only Eighteen years old. Ozai, his little brother was only three. Aang, an older man now, began a solitary life.
The Water Tribes "united" (the Northern Water Tribe annexed the south)- under the same resolve: to exact their revenge upon the Fire Nation for years of raids and destruction and; using the technology that the Fire Nation pioneered, created fleets of warships and submarines, launching another war upon the weakened Fire Nation. Aang was indifferent towards this war, still bitter for the genocide of his people, and did nothing to discourage or prevent it. He eventually died at the age of 97, passing away in his sleep. He was survived by his fifty-three children, seventy-nine grandchildren, and one hundred twenty-seven great grand children.
When Ozai finally became distinguished enough to command his own fleet, he retaliated harshly against the water tribe, while Iroh headed an attack on Ba Sing Se, wherein his heir Lu Ten was killed by earthbender Dai Lee agents. Iroh was devastated by the loss of his son, and became a hollow shell of a man, a puppet controlled by his younger brother, acting as nothing but a figurehead as Ozai grooms his daughter Azula to become the next Fire Lord, ignoring his own firstborn, a son named Zuko.
The chief of the water tribe continues his attack against the fire nation, and it seems they are nearing their breaking point. The war has been raging for nearly sixty years.
Meanwhile, the world waits for the reveal of the next Avatar, said to be of the Water Tribe.
