Act 1

It was an excessively sunny day in Central city. Barry Allen raised a hand to shade himself from the glaring sun. He had decided to spend his lunch break outside, so that he could enjoy his scones and double milk latte in what was considered a dynamic environment for him. He was a CSI for the Central City Police Department, which meant that his line of work consisted of running tests in his lab and having to work overtime. It didn't help that he lived in one of the biggest cities in the country, one that had more than enough crime to turn one unfortunate Barry Allen into a single pringle.

Brrtttttt! Brrrrtttt!

Barry looked down at his phone. The name read: Joe West. Barry picked it up.

"Hey, what's up, Joe?"

" Not much, Barr. I just called to let you know that lunch break ends in 5 minutes, and Singh wants the results for the Mardon brothers as soon as possible."

Barry's face, which had lit up at the kind, baritone voice of his adoptive father, promptly fell.

"Did he um, mention anything else?"

"Yeah, that you should probably consider getting a new alarm clock as soon as possible. Told you he'd find out."

Barry groaned internally. The no-nonsense police captain didn't tolerate tardiness of any shape, and he could already hear the stern talking-to he was about to receive.

"Oh, and Iris asked you if she should dress up for the science event that you asked her to go to- something about particles, was it?"

Barry could feel a slight sense of excitement at the mention of the particle accelerator launch event- he had followed Harrison Wells's study with almost childlike glee. And he wanted to share what was sure to be one of the greatest scientific feats in history with his adopted sibling, Iris.

"Kay. I'll see you ln a sec."

As he finished off his scones and rose, brushing the crumbs from his plaid shirt, he heard a solid thud! as a woman tripped over the coffee cup he had set down near the bench and knocked over.

"Hey! Watch it!" Barry exclaimed, dismayed.

"Oh, god, I'm so sorry! I'll get you another one- can you tell me what drink it was?"

Barry shook his head, slightly annoyed.

"No thanks, my lunch break just ended."

As he said this, he took in the appearance of the woman- in spite of himself, he realized that she was extremely pretty, with auburn curls and doe-like chocolate eyes.

"In that case, then at least let me pay you. Again, I'm so sorry."

His expression softened somewhat- he realized that he had been a bit curt over what was just a cup of coffee. "No, it's all right. Serves me right for putting it down there."

The woman smiled shyly, and Barry found that it made his day a bit better. Hmmm. Maybe Joe was right about saying something kind to people whenever I get the chance.

Suddenly, his face lit up with an idea- something that his step sis, Iris always said looked as if he was a pigeon that was hit with a loaf of bread. "Hey, why don't we, you know, meet another time for coffee? I'm kinda running late."

The woman's lips twitched and asked with a hint of laughter in her voice. "Are you asking me out on a date?"

Barry felt a cheeky grin tug at his cheeks and instead of answering, wrote his number on a napkin and handed it to her. "There. Now it's a date."

The woman's earlier frown had all but vanished and was Barry could feel a goofy smile overtake his features. "Ookay… But you still haven't told me your name yet." The woman said with a slight giggle.

Barry's eyebrows shot up and found himself blushing. "Oh, uh- My name is Barry. Barry Allen."

The woman smiled shyly and offered a handshake. "And I'm Caitlin. Caitlin Snow."

He accepted it and was about to say something, but was interrupted by the sound of his phone vibrating. He checked it and mentally kicked himself. The clock read 1: 33 pm- he was late yet again.

"Sorry, my lunch break ended- Well, technically it ended about 6 minutes ago, since I need time to run there and I don't have teleportation powers, so-"

Caitlin cut him off, smiling. "It's okay. Get back to work and I'll get back to you….?"

Barry realized that she was looking at him expectantly.

"Oh, um, any time is good actually. I'm kinda addicted to my phone, y'know."

He was already walking off as he said this, and he didn't realize that she had waved goodbye to him. Because right now, his mind was already thinking of possible excuses for his tardiness. Explosive diarrhea. Yeah, that's it.

"Mr. Barry Allen! Running late as usual?"

Barry winced as the police captain frowned at him, displeasure evident on his face. "Uh… sorry. Someone knocked over my coffee on the way."

Captain Singh shook his head slightly.

"Try to start coming to work on time. This is already the fifth time this month that you've been late."

Barry's face fell.

"I understand."

"Anyways, where's the results for the Mardon brothers case? I've been waiting for an update for at least 5 days now, Allen."

Barry's face brightened somewhat- at least he had one piece of good news to tell his employer.

"I'm done, actually. I just need to run upstairs to my lab and get it- if you want."

Singh nodded before walking off to handle some paperwork.

As Barry got Singh the results and started working on a forensic report on one of the crime scenes he had visited with Joe, his phone buzzed.

Unknown number: Is this Barry Allen's number?

Barry felt a small grin tug at his cheeks before quickly texting a reply.

His week had just gotten a lot more interesting.

The large amphitheater was bustling with commotion as Barry and Iris made their way to the crowd, where Harrison Wells- The Harrison Wells was giving a speech.

"Sooooo, what's all this about accelerating particles and science nonsense?"

Iris asked Barry- she was wearing a beautiful one-piece red dress since Barry had been adamant about them looking their best when they witnessed the launch. He grinned at her, remembering how she had called him a 'total nerd'.

"Okay, first of all- it's not just science nonsense. Wells devoted nearly half his life to Star Labs, and the resulting facility is one of, if not the most developed scientific R&D locations in history. The particle accelerator, which will house one of the most ambitious experiments on quantum theory, will literally change the way we think about everything."

He stopped, realizing the huge grin that had broken out on Iris's face. "What?"

Her goofy smile only widened. "Nothing. You're such a huge dork."

Barry rolled his eyes. As Iris accepted some champagne from a passing waiter, he took them and set them down.

"Absolutely not. I will not have you drunk while this happens."

Iris huffed. "You have got to get a girlfriend. Did you know I had to cancel a date to get here?"

Barry ignored her, which annoyed her to no end, and instead pointed at the stand. The crowd had quieted down. "Look, it's happening!"

"Thank you. My name is Harrison Wells. Tonight, the future begins. The work my team and I will do here will change our understanding of physics. We'll bring about advancements in power, advancements in medicine, and trust me, that future will be here faster than you think."

Barry couldn't help the huge, goofy grin that had formed on his face. Wells then nodded, and gestured towards the two scientists standing next to him.

"Everyone, before we begin, I would like to acknowledge the incredible work that my team had done. Please, a round of applause for Cisco Ramon and Dr. Caitli-"

"Hey!"

Barry jumped- Iris had suddenly taken off running, and he quickly followed suit.

"Ir-Hey! Iris! What's happening?" Iris desperately pointed towards a man, who was running away from the crowd. "Somebody stole my laptop- It's got my dissertation!"

"Hey! Stop right there!" Barry yelled, following the man.

The man took a hard right and Barry ran after him, not noticing that he had stopped until it was too late. "Ooooff!" Barry grunted as the man struck him in the chest with the laptop.

"All right, kid, you don't have to do this, all right? Just give me back my friend's bag, and we'll call it ev-" Barry tried to reason with the guy, but was cut off when he punched him.

"Barry! Are you okay?"

Iris ran up to him, only to see that the guy had gotten away.

"Freeze! CCPD! Or do you want to find out whether you're faster than a bullet?"

They spun around to see the thief being held down by a blonde, handsome man in a police uniform.

"Who is that guy, and what is he so proud of? So he caught a mugger?"

Iris scoffed as she stared at the blonde cop grinning and joking around with his friends as they went through a brief series of questions in the precinct.

Barry felt a grin tug at his face. Iris seemed to always be annoyed by the men she found attractive- something he had discovered back in high school.

"He's a transfer from Keystone. Started a few weeks ago. Eddie Thawne."

Iris continued to stare at the guy, which only amused him further.

"Oh, that's Detective Pretty Boy. That's what my dad calls him. Says he actually keeps score when it comes to arrests. He is pretty, though."

Barry struggled to keep his face neutral as he pumped his fist in his mind- He shoots, he scores. He knew Iris too well to miss the fact that she was into toughies and liked a bit of muscle on her men. A grin broke through as he remembered her complaining that being siblings with him and his scrawny body had ruined the fun of dating lanky guys.

Barry walked into his lab, glancing up at the window, where a torrential downpour was pounding down on the sunroof. As he neared his corkboard he gave it a glance and pulled up the projector screen, revealing a bulletin board with scrapped paper all over it. Some scraps were headlines of his mother's murder, and others were rough sketches of a blur- the exact ones he had seen on that traumatic night. His gaze drifted towards the window, where the particle accelerator was beginning to get enveloped in a soft glow. Frowning, he listened to the live broadcast on the situation.

I'm Linda Park, and we're live outside S.T.A.R. Labs despite the inclement weather, which is only going to get worse. The torrential downpour has in no way affected the particle accelerator, which is up and running smoothly according to S.T.A.R. Labs CEO Harrison Wells. The weather has also...

Joe stared at the list that his adoptive son/CSI Barry had made for him and frowned thoughtfully.

"This is the last farm on Barry's list."

Detective Chyre rubbed his temple doubtfully.

"Look, I know the kid's smart, but you said it yourself. Sometimes he's chasing flying pigs."

Chyre looked out the foggy windows of the cop car- he disliked saying anything negative about Barry, since the kid had worked so hard to get where he was now. In fact, nearly everyone in the precinct knew Barry Allen, either from the way he waddled everywhere(saying that he ran was an exaggeration) or by his enthusiasm to help people. Whenever a forensic expert needed a day off or an especially difficult case, all they needed to do was ask him. Some of the older cops joked that even Captain Singh had a soft spot for Barry, which was good since he wasn't exactly going to stop being late to work.

" Well, let's check it out anyway." Joe grunted as he opened the car door.
