AN this is a tribute for the Kadam week 2022, links to all the prompts and other connected stories can be found on my ao3 (same title and author). Prompt for day 2 was A kiss in bed or as the random generator suggested Kurt giving Adam a kiss before going to work and they are still in bed.
Lazy mornings in bed were Adam's favorite moments. There was a luxurious decadence in slowly stretching while still surrounded by soft warmth.
Another positive advantage was the fact that Kurt always cuddled closer to Adam when he was about to wake up.
Their bedroom was facing northeast, not totally protected by the morning light, but it still allowed the pretense of ignoring the arrival of a new day.
Especially if they curled together and hid their heads under the blankets.
More than one winter morning had started just that way, before their moral compasses insisted it was time to leave the bed and face the new day.
Initially the number of days they both actually had a chance to enjoy such kind of mornings, were low and far in between…
In their chosen careers, being busy was the best of news, as it meant there was work to be done, and money to be earned.
On the opposite side of the scale though, it also meant less free time to spend together.
In the beginning, as they were still both building up their reputation and making a name for themselves, it was rare for their schedule to be so busy that there was only little available personal time.
More often than not, Adam found himself a new contract soon after or still very close to the end dates of Kurt's projects. The alternating between the two on who was working had been a blessing in disguise, as it had allowed to always have a way for normal adult survival's task to be done, and some personal time to be spent together.
When Kurt and Adam had started living together, after Adam's Masters were done, and Kurt was on his senior year, they had both naively believed that the biggest hurdle to overcome was going to be dealing with not enough money if neither of them had anything more than a part time job.
Neither was prepared, or had even thought, that the hardest part was going to be when both their careers started to advance.
The first time they both had work at the same time had been their real trial by fire. Previous experiences had, at that point, created a certain amount of expectations. And adjusting to the new reality had been, difficult.
Considering their different upbringings, natural inclinations and living alone previously had cemented habits for the both of them.
Kurt was always the first out of bed after becoming completely awake. While Adam tended to not leave the warmth blankets to face the world, until the possible last moment.
The end result when scheduled collided was that within the first two weeks, they found themselves more like roommates sleeping in a single bed than being together.
Each of them took care of his share of housework and cleaning after himself, but by the time everything grocery, laundry, cleaning and cooking was done, neither really had enough energies to invest on the other.
And their relationship took a few blows because of that.
Adam's insecurities started to mount, slowly but inexorably. He wondered if Kurt regularly left their bed in the morning, only time they could carve some moments for themselves, simply because he was no longer interested but too kind to say something.
Up to that point Adam had considered the lack of physical affection a byproduct of the tiredness that the new situation bought. As things didn't change, he started to fear there was something else.
Adam tried to leave small thoughtful gestures through the house for Kurt, preparing the coffee machine and set up a time for when Kurt would wake up, organize ready to grab snack bags and ready to made breakfast options in the fridge the night before.
All but the coffee were ignore, which pushed one night to the confrontation that had Adam scared for weeks.
"Do you want to breakup with me?" Kurt had looked as alarmed as Adam felt, but most of all, confused and tired.
"I don't understand, I don't want us to break up, do you?"
During Kurt's own question his voice trembled a little. Adam shook his head "No, but you've not taken the snack bags nor the breakfast I left you in the fridge in the past week, after you said it was a lovely idea, you just took the coffee and left…"
Kurt blinked surprised trying to remember when they had discussed that particular point but came out blank "I'm sorry I though those were yours, you had looked so tired and worried lately that I thought those were ways to let you rest a little longer in the morning. I know you enjoys waking up slowly, and as I can get fidgeting so I didn't want to bother you or force you to start your morning earlier. I don't remember us talking about it"
Adam looked taken aback and frowned confused "We talked about it couple of weeks ago, one of the rare times you stayed in bed for a little longer than usual"
Kurt tilted head to the side, still not remembering it, but starting to get an idea as an embarrassed blush crept on his face "Do you remember if I was actually awake for that? Because if I had not looked up ehrm, it might have been that I was sleep talking"
Adam looked surprised and then shook his head, "We were snuggling together, so I didn't notice whether you had your eyes open or not, I had assumed that, since you were answering me coherently, you were as awake as I was."
Kurt shook his head still flushed "I had not done it in such a long time, I kinda forgot it might have happened."
With the air cleared between then Adam had quickly taken Kurt into his arms with a smile "How about from now own we start our talks in bed with a kiss? Just to be sure we're both going to remember it, if nothing else being woken up with kisses is thousand times better than the alarm clock"
Appearing relived, Kurt nodded sealing the deal with a kiss.
It was from that moment on that a tradition had been born. Kurt would never stay in bed much longer after waking up, especially if there was work to be done.
From then on, before leaving the bed and Adam's embrace, Kurt would always give his partner an unhurried kiss.
