Chapter 1: The Rift
-o-o-o-
For as long as he could remember, he had always been the protector of his sweet little brother. A staunch guardian, loyal to a fault. What's there NOT to love? Striking blue eyes as blue as the sky, golden hair that rivals the sun, a smile that can light up the room. Naruto was the pride and joy of the Namikaze clan. Naruto was also the first who made his adoption into the family a far less lonely experience.
At first, Sasuke was detached, unwilling to view the Namikazes as family, not when his family laid cold six feet under the ground. He felt it would be a great dishonor to them and their memory to accept a new family, to acknowledge another father and mother and sibling as his own.
But when he was brought to share the room of the clan's young master, that was when he met Naruto. He didn't know why, but something in his chest stirred. And even when the airheaded omega was loud, even when Naruto was annoying to a fault, Sasuke started to respect his new younger brother, saw him in a new light when Naruto fended off not just three, not just four but five attackers all at once, who bullied him for being different from the rest of the clan.
After all, only him and his father had eyes so blue and hair so golden in a sea of red.
But despite his strength and the power that his family wields in Konoha, Naruto never lashed out, never disrespected anyone. In fact, Naruto goes out of his way to help those who are around him, and would stubbornly insist in protecting the weaker and powerless, something that invited trouble more often than he could count. This duality of strength, of power juxtaposed with his gentle and caring nature, has immediately drawn Sasuke to the younger one.
And so the moment he became Namikaze Sasuke, he vowed never to let any harm come to his sweet little brother.
That was one of the reason why Sasuke's name replaced Naruto as the scariest in their school after all. Because unlike his little brother who insisted on talking it out first, Sasuke's strong alpha blood preferred talking with his fist and claws. And while his reputation is less than ideal, Sasuke wouldn't have it any other way.
Because at least this way, Naruto's hands remained unstained.
He'd rather that it was his hands that met the bully's jaws than tarnish his sweet little brother's with the filth of the undeserving. And ever since they were twelve, that arrangement has worked.
"Ohhh… Nii-sama… You're home!" Sasuke smiled as familiar voice reached his ears. Naruto never fails to wash away the tiredness of the day. When his little brother's smaller tanned hands would take his larger hand and guides him to their room, untying the rubber tie on his long dark hair as he unbuttoned his gakuran, it's as if all the stress from his body would melt away.
All the troubles would disappear.
Because in this tiny little corner of the estate, he felt alive… he felt as if his family is back with him.
And for as long as he can remember, life revolved around his little brother… his one most important family.
And for Sasuke, that had been enough.

It was night time and Sasuke was lying on their shared bed when he felt the soft mattress dip down. A pair of legs rested on his back and Sasuke's eye twitched.
"Oi…" He muttered, but his eyes held no irritation as he looked at his little brother who innocently plopped himself on their bed. Naruto just grinned mischievously and run his fingers through his brother's dark locks. He loved Sasuke's long soft dark hair, even more so when the tough and gruff alpha would just leaned back to meet his touch.
Through their years together, Naruto has attached himself to the older alpha, being the only other child in the family. And while Naruto looked at himself as an independent child most of the time, he didn't mind it too much when Sasuke pampers him. So he likes to give back as much as he could.
He knows just how much the alpha can get when it comes to him and he takes in that attention with gusto. Because as much as Naruto hated to admit it, he looked up to the older one.
To him, Sasuke has survived the world has to offer, survived the loneliness of having his family ripped away from him at such a young age and came out stronger for it.
"Say, Sasu-nii… Kiba and the others were planning to go to the beach this weekend. Wanna come?" Naruto grinned wider, expecting that as always, Sasuke would say yes. He knows his niisan could never say no to him. And while he may feel a little selfish at times, he was so used to Sasuke doting on him that he really didn't expect what happens next.
Sasuke groaned as he shifted his weight on the bed. Without even looking at his younger brother, he was too focused on his phone at the moment, he replied back,
"Can't, sorry Naru. Sakura and I have plans. Maybe some other time?" Sasuke continued tapping on his phone, transfixed at the screen in front of him.
"Sakura who?" Naruto asked, it was the first time he heard of the name. And for some reason, something was squeezing at his chest. He wasn't used to this disconnect… he felt as if he suddenly wasn't the world of his brother. And he doesn't know how to feel yet. But it all came crashing down when Sasuke next spoke.
"Oh…. My girlfriend. Don't worry about it okay? I promise I'll take you out some other time." Sasuke didn't notice the dimming of Naruto's eyes. The next thing he knew was the lifting of the legs from his back. The bed shifted lightly. And as he looked up, all he could see was his little brother's disappearing back.

Sasuke tossed and turned the entire night. He wasn't used to the loneliness of the room. The servants informed him that the young master went to sleep with the matriarch and the patriarch.
Why? They didn't know. All Sasuke know was that he missed having the smaller warm body beside him… he missed the feeling of wrapping his arms around his little brother, missed the feeling of something smaller to hold and protect.
And soon, he fell into a dreamless sleep.

Sasuke yawned as he got up from the bed. As always, he's an early riser. But what surprised him was that Naruto was already in the dinner table, way earlier than him. What's more surprising is his hair was dyed red. He rose an eyebrow in silent question, Naruto and him has communicated silently this way for a while now and he knew that the younger would be able to understand.
When Naruto kept on eating, he finally voiced his question.
"Naru, what happened to your hair?"
"What? No good morning teme?" Naruto grinned mischievously. And that jarred Sasuke too. It was the first time that Naruto used such language. "Beautiful isn't it? Just like mom? Ne kaasan?" He turned to Kushina who's eyes watered.
"Ohh, Sasuke dear…. I never thought I'd see the day… I didn't know my baby adored my hair for so long. What'd you say to that, Minato?"
She jabbed her husband playfully at the side with her elbow who just rolled his eyes in response. But his eyes held amusement in them.
"Sure, dear. And what? The next time he'll want to change his last name to Uzumaki? You two wound me."
"Oh I'm sure he wouldn't go that far, right, Naruto?"
"Of course not Kaasan. I love dad, as well." As the family shared a laugh, Sasuke felt a little bit awkward. Normally, Naruto would include him in their conversations, would go to great lengths to get him to join.
But it appears that this time, his only link to the family has vanished in an instant.
"Take a seat, Sasuke. I had them make your favorite. Tomato salad…" Kushina remarked, but her eyes never left Naruto. She was far too in awe with Naruto taking her hair color to notice anything else.
As Sasuke took his seat, his thoughts raced. Why the sudden change? There has to be something. Naruto's not the type to care about his appearance. Sasuke thought his brother is being bullied. If that's the case, he has to figure it out somehow. Otherwise he failed his duty as an older brother. But so far Naruto has given no hints of that. And if he is surely, Naruto can handle it right?
So what could it be?
Sasuke was halfway into his food when Naruto stood up.
"Well, I'm done. I better go…"
"Wait, Naruto… I'll drive you. Wait a sec."
"Oh… keep on eating, teme. Kurama will drive me. Well, I'm out of here… See you later, Kaasan, Tousan!"
Minato and Kushina smiled back as their son waved them goodbye. But Sasuke can't help but feel a certain coldness in his heart. There's something odd about the way that Naruto is acting this morning. And he'll find it out.
But all thoughts disappeared from his mind when his phone vibrated.
He saw a message from his girlfriend.
And all thoughts instantly deviated to her.
-o-o-o-
They didn't see each other much for the rest of the day. And despite Sakura's nagging, Sasuke had been anxious to get home all day. So he did, as early as he could. When he neared their shared room, he saw a servant on the hallway.
"Naruto-sama has a guest, Sasuke-kun."
His eyebrow rose at this. He always knows who Naruto is with. But now, a surprise guest was suddenly in their room.
He moved past the servant who made no move to stop him. But what stopped him on his tracks was seeing his little brother on the chair, laughing richly as he talked to a female on his lap. Suddenly, Sasuke's chest was feeling tight all of the sudden. He doesn't know why. Shouldn't he be happy that his brother found someone?
But then, something nagged at the back of his mind.
Naruto is an omega.
That's the very reason why he was chaperoned by either him or Kurama most of the time. He was a giant target in their school. So why is he with a female? He turned to leave the hallway, unable to stomach the scene in front of him.
As he was leaving, he ran into their father.
"Ahhh.. Sasuke… I didn't know you were home. How was your day?" Minato asked him.
"It's nothing special, father. Can I speak to you for a minute?"
"Ohh? About what?"
"The girl in our room…. Who?" Sasuke asked, unaware that he barely choked his words.
"Ahhh… Hinata-chan." He smiled, a proud smile at that. "Our Naru has grown up Sasuke… He came home today with her. They just started dating." The man announced, oblivious to the tensing of his alpha son.
"Ohhh are you talking about Hinata-chan, dear?" Sasuke heard Kushina's voice. It was way too happy for his liking. And he's not sure why he's taking issue with it really.
"Yes, dear. Isn't it great that our Naru found someone? I really thought he's far too innocent for his own good." Kushina and Minato shared a laugh but Sasuke couldn't take it anymore. He felt hot all of the sudden. He doesn't know why. But something in him was protesting. He can't put his finger on it.
"Father… mother… need I remind you that Naruto is an omega?" Minato just sighed and he and Kushina started guiding their adopted son out to the halls.
"Sasuke, it shouldn't matter what subsex Naruto has, right? As long as he loves her and she loves him, do we really have to get in the way of love?" Sasuke looked at his adoptive father. He didn't like the way that their mother and father looked so happy. And while there is certain truth to his words, why was his chest aching?
"Now come, Sasuke… Mustn't disturb your brother now."
"Yeah… It's rare that he talks to anyone, you know." Kushina added. And Sasuke frowned.
It's true. Sasuke was so used to being the center of his little brother too. And whether he admit it loudly or not, Naruto is the reason why he's strong, the reason why his world is bright and happy.
Seeing Naruto with that…. Hinata… something within him was stirring. And he doesn't know if he likes it. He let himself be dragged by Kushina and Minato. But all he could focus on is Naruto's rich unrestrained laughter echoing from the halls.
He doesn't even notice his phone vibrating this time.
