Luz stomped her feet excitedly as she waited for her awesome girlfriend, since the two had planned for this date ever since the end of Belos's reign. "It's going to be great! There's this amazing boba tea cafe back home, and their boba tea is just… the best! They use non-dairy creamer, so anyone can enjoy it!" she rambled on to Eda. "Maybe I should take you and King along next time!" The Dominican girl had a cute pink dress with a yellow shirt underneath it, white loafers, and she wore her red beanie hat to top it all off.
"Pffft, sweet things aren't really my style, kid," the Owl Lady snorted. Savior of the Boiling Isles, folks, she couldn't help but think to herself. "Man, to think you had that Belos petrified! And here you are, all giddy for your first date Baby Blight in the human realm!"
"Luz! You better bring back the spoils of the human realm back after your date!" King demanded. "I wish to see if these human delights are as good as ours!"
"Hoot, hoot! Luz, your awesome girlfriend is here!" Hooty announced, opening up to reveal Amity, all gussied up for their date. The Abominations witch had black ripped jeans, red boots, and a grey shirt, carrying a tan messenger bag, a pleasantly stark contrast to Luz's cheery aesthetic.
"Amity!" the tan girl squealed excitedly as she ran up to the lilac-haired witch. "You look great!"
"Aww, you do, too, Luz," Amity smiled, blushing a bit. She was admittedly a bit nervous about this, since this was her first time in the human realm, after all, but… as long as she had Luz by her side, it shouldn't be that bad. Of course, this was the first time the witch was also meeting her girlfriend's family, so that didn't help matters.
"Blech! Time to skedaddle before you make us barf with your sappiness, Luz!" Eda feigned her disgust as she waved bye to the lovebirds when the two linked arms.
"Enjoy your date, you two! Hoot!" the bird tube giggled as the door shut.
"Thaaaanks, Hooty," Luz grinned awkwardly as she waved bye to him. No matter how long she had known the house demon, she was still a bit unsettled by him. "Now, Amity, since this is your first time in the human realm, you gotta make sure to stay by my side!"
"Okay," Amity nodded, taking a deep breath. Luz, of course, did teach her some things about the human realm, mostly about these self-moving metal carriages called cars. Though they seemed not too bad when used responsibly, there were always morons on the road that really shouldn't have their licenses, and that scared Amity the most.
"Aaaand here we go!" Luz quickened her pace as the two neared the portal. Amity couldn't help but brace as they crossed into the human realm. "Ta-da! Welcome to the human realm, Ams!"
"Wow…" the lilac-haired witch relaxed a bit, taking in the sight of the forest around them. Everything was so… peaceful. The plants weren't trying to attack them and the sun was shining.
"I know it might be a bit boring compared to the Boiling Isles, but Vee loves it here, at least, so there's that," Luz shrugged as she held Amity's hand and led her around.
"Oh. Right. Your family," the witch was admittedly a bit nervous about meeting her girlfriend's family. What if they hated her?
"Mami and Vee will love you, trust me!" Luz reassured her. "Just as long as, uh, we leave out how you tried to have me dissected." Amity snorted and nodded in agreement, though she still felt a twinge of guilt for having done that. Eventually, the two came out of the forest, met with a calm, cozy scene of the street: pedestrians meandering their way around, cars driving along slowly, and a gentle breeze blowing against their faces. "Welcome to Gravesfield, Amity!"
"It's…" the witch wasn't sure what to think, being used to the brutality of the Demon Realm, "wonderful," she eventually settled, smiling brightly.
"Now, just listen to what I say for this part, okay, Ams?" Luz rubbed a thumb over her awesome girlfriend's knuckles. Amity nodded in affirmation, keeping an eye on the cars slowing down. "So we just keep waiting for the red light and… now we go!" the Dominican girl looked both ways and briskly jogged across the street. "We did it! You did great for your first time crossing a busy street," she grinned.
"I… huh, I guess I did," Amity sighed in relief. "I was a bit nervous at first. Those… cars are way bigger than I expected up close!" she admitted.
"Ah, yeah, but the only ones you gotta watch out for are the morons on the road! Thing is, you kinda have to assume everyone's a moron on the road," Luz shrugged. "But hey, look! We're here!" she pointed at the sign that said "Tiger Stripes Cafe".
"Looks quaint," Amity commented. Indeed, it seemed like a nice, relaxed place for the teens to hang out. "Whoa!" she almost yelped when Luz practically dragged her in. It was a small cafe, and it didn't seem too busy right now, albeit with a few customers at a table, just chatting it up. Some lo-fi beats quietly played on the speakers to keep up the relaxing atmosphere.
"They have all sorts of flavors, so I think we can find you a flavor you'll love!" Luz went up the counter to look at the menu.
Amity looked around at the cafe, finding the cultural aesthetic intriguing. I'll have to ask Luz about this, she thought to herself.
"So whatcha think you might like, Ams?" Luz snapped her out of her thoughts. "I kinda narrowed it down to matcha and lavender, since you like those tea flavors back in the Boiling Isles, but you can mix up to three flavors," she rambled on. "...Sorry, I keep talking," she blushed. "You can pick whatever you'd like!"
"Maybe we should hire you or something, Luz," the cashier snorted in laughter. She was a petite Asian girl with glasses, with long, dark brown hair, donning a black polo shirt and slacks of a matching color. Despite her age, she was astonishingly short, shorter than Amity by a good six inches. "But seriously, take your time, it's been pretty dead today!" She was probably one of the few folks in town that treated her kindly, always offering her a free drink when the tan girl was down in the dumps, despite her manager disapproving. "So who's she? Never seen her around before," she pointed at Amity. Though the two spent a long while over the past few weeks catching up, Luz "conveniently" left Amity out of the conversation, wanting to surprise the cashier.
"This… is my awesome girlfriend Amity! Amity, this is my favorite cashier Quynh!"
"Aww, congrats, Luz! You two look super cute together," Quynh grinned, leading to Amity blushing like a tomato.
"Anyways, I'll have a vanilla milk tea with orange bursting boba!" Luz beamed.
"Oh, right! Uh… I'll have a lavender… fruit tea?" Amity squinted in surprise at how the cafe labeled some of their flavors.
"Alrighty! Any tapioca or boba with that?"
"Oh, Titan, I haven't thought that far," Amity giggled a bit. "Um, I guess I'll have a scoop of the honey bursting boba!" Luckily, such things weren't entirely foreign to Amity, though the Boiling Isles version of boba tea usually had eyeballs instead of tapioca and boba.
"Sure thing! That'll be $11.70!" the cashier gave a thumbs up to Luz. "A lil discount for you two, ya know?"
"Aw, shucks, you didn't have to," Luz gave her fifteen dollars. "Keep the change, trust me!"
"Oh, wow, thanks, Luz!" the cashier got to work on the two girls' drinks right away.
"So… whatcha think so far, Amity?" Luz had to ask when they took a seat near the counter, eager to hear what her girlfriend had to say.
"It's really nice. It feels like I could just stay here all day, to be honest," she admitted.
"Perfect place to talk about Azura, am I right? I missed having regular boba tea that doesn't have, ya know, eyeballs that popped," the tan girl shuddered a bit. Amity giggled a bit, though she admittedly never tried the popping eyeballs in her own boba tea, since she didn't particularly care much for the chewy ones.
"Here ya go, guys! A vanilla milk tea with orange boba and a lavender fruit tea with honey boba. If you like the lavender flavor, try the rose next time! I love mixing the lavender and rose tea flavors for my freebie drink, personally, because it's like drinking a literal flower!" Quynh snorted in laughter. "Enjoy your little date, kiddos!"
Amity blushed a bright red. Even after a year and a half of dating Luz, it still shocked her that they were girlfriends. "Pffft, what a riot, isn't she?" the Dominican girl had that bright smile, the goofy grin that always flustered the Abominations witch.
"She seems… accepting, at least," Amity sighed in relief, having heard of the negatives Luz also told her about. She popped her straw into her cup and took a sip. "Mm! So I guess this is how they pop, right?"
"Yep! Some people call them bubble tea instead for that reason! Well, at least, I like to think that's why."
Amity took another sip and smiled. "You know, I think I like them. They're sweet and bubbly, just like you, Luz."
A/N: As my first TOH fanfic posted up, some things about the girls might be a bit wonky in some ways I don't know about, but I'm fairly confident they're pretty in-character. This was honestly kinda a stream of consciousness after being inspired by some fanart because I really just wanted to get something fluffy out! The boba tea cafe was inspired by the one my sister owns, where I happen to work there, too, so the name of the cafe isn't its actual name, and the same goes to my self-insert cameo!
Now, some folks might be all "actually, the OG name was bubble tea" to me! That was the case when I was younger, but now most folks in my area seem to call it "boba tea" instead! I'm just used to calling it boba tea now, so I had Luz say boba instead of bubble. Also, I'd love to link the fanart that inspired this fanfic, but I don't believe I can do that here, so all I can really say is search up this story on AO3 and it'll be linked in the beginning note!
With all that out of the way, reviews and favorites are appreciated, and I hope you enjoyed!
