Chapter One

Writer's Note:

Over the years, Nintendo's beloved Legend of Zelda franchise has evolved in many forms. While 1998's Ocarina of Time changed Zelda forever with the jump to 3D, 2017's Breath of the Wild proved to be even bigger.

While the game was known for being open world, there was still a plot which involved Link waking up after 100 years of sleep to save an already destroyed Hyrule from Calamity Ganon. Near the end of the game, you fight Ganon himself and face his dark beast form.

The cutscene before the fight is interesting, especially since Zelda reminds you that Ganon is the reincarnation of the Demon King Demise. Either way, after Ganon is defeated, what comes next is unknown, especially since it's going to be a while before the sequel comes out.

Because the next game is a long way off, this is where our fanfic comes into play.

I do not The Legend of Zelda series for it belongs to Nintendo, but enjoy the ride anyway. Ready? Here we go...

A long time ago, the great Kingdom of Hyrule prospered, serving as the resting place of the almighty Triforce and led by the royal bloodline of the great Hylia. But unfortunately, peace never lasts forever...

For generations, a great evil has invaded the peaceful kingdom in the form of the dreaded Demon King Ganon. Fortunately for Hyrule and its lovely princess in peril, a brave hero has come to the kingdom's aid and defeated the Demon King after many hard-fought battles...

In the following years after Ganon's last defeat, peace reigned throughout Hyrule until the dark one struck again. However, Ganon had changed. He had become the monstrous Calamity Ganon, now he was more dangerous than he'd previously been...

Just like before, the hero took up his sword to fight his old enemy. But this time, the hero had the princess with him and they were not alone. Most of Hyrule and the Sheikah Clan banded together to help in the fight and, in the end, the Demon King was defeated again...

Peace was once more restored to Hyrule and all was well until disaster struck nine centuries later. A more resurgent Calamity Ganon emerged from beneath the earth and used his dark powers to corrupt Hyrule's Sheikah-made advanced technologies that had been created to combat the threat posed by him...

Within a day, Ganon's forces devastated Hyrule and laid waste to Castle Town. Among those who suffered from the chaos of the Great Calamity were the lovely Princess Zelda and the brave hero Link, the latter of whom made a desperate stand but was badly hurt...

Fort Hateno was the place where Hyrule was saved by Zelda's newly awakened powers, but it all came at a tragic cost with the near loss of Link. What remained of Hyrule's army rallied at Fort Akkala and made a desperate last stand against Ganon's forces, but it was all for naught as the once great Kingdom of Hyrule was gone...

After narrowly surviving the events of Fort Hateno and making sure her hero was safe, Zelda headed to Hyrule Castle and confronted Calamity Ganon there. Using her divine powers, she sealed him away within the walls of the castle and struggled to keep him from escaping his prison that Zelda had made for Ganon...

One hundred years passed; an entire century filled with uncertainty among the survivors of the Great Calamity. As far as many people were concerned, Hyrule was gone and Ganon was victorious. But then, a ray of hope shone on the future of the world once again as Link reawakened in the Shrine of Resurrection...

Fully healed after a century-long sleep, the revitalized hero embarked on a new journey to save the ruined Hyrule from Calamity Ganon. Guided by Princess Zelda's voice, the hero regained his memories and liberated the four Divine Beasts from Ganon's dark influence...

During his quest through the ruins of Hyrule, Link aided people in need and defeated many strong foes such as the Yiga Tribe's leader Boss Kohga. When his tasks were done, Link made his way to Hyrule Castle for the final battle with Ganon himself...

After a fierce battle and despite the odds stacked against him, the hero finally defeated the Demon King again and was reunited with Princess Zelda, but the story is not over yet. There is much work to be done and dark times may already be looming again...

Orange lightning flashed across the dark-red cloudy sky as the light of the Red Moon illuminated the burning remnants of Hyrule. Link stood alone with the Master Sword and Hylian Shield in hand, badly beaten, but still strong.

This fight had been lost ages ago when the monsters destroyed everything. A century ago, the only miracle had been the successful stand at Fort Hateno. While Hyrule had been saved that day, it had been saved at a massive cost.

But now, it was hopeless! The Armies of Darkness had prevailed and Zelda was already gone. Link was the only one left or so he thought. The hero had heard that a large handful of survivors had fled to distant lands unknown, but he was unsure if Zelda was among them.

The towering figure of the Dark One stood before Link, fiery hair ablaze and flanked by a hulking Yiga-Lynel and the monstrous Guardian Mark II. The jagged blade of the Demon Sword gleamed in the red moonlight as it illuminated the upside down Triforce symbol.

"I can *cough* still beat you!" Link groaned. The hero coughed more intensely until his knees shook and his hands trembled. Yet he still held on to his trademark sword and shield, not daring to let his trusty tools slip from his grasp.

"You have already failed, Servant of Hylia! You are alone and will be forgotten." The dark one countered, "Hyrule is mine to remake in my image, the Triforce will serve its new ultimate purpose as rebellions will be crushed and more will fall."

"No." Link croaked, "NO!" Forgetting his injuries, he held up the Master Sword and charged towards his intimidating nemesis in a desperate attempt to cut him down. "Oh no you don't!" The Demon King yelled intimidatingly and snapped his fingers.

The Yiga-Lynel let out a roar that shook the earth, creating a shockwave that could subdue anyone within a mile radius of the roar's path. Link found his whole body freezing in mid-run, unable to move a muscle. The Guardian Mark II's eyes glowed bright red, signaling that it was about to do something.

Link could only hope his shield was still strong enough to block the incoming attack and he realized his overconfidence far too late. The Guardian Mark II fired an enormous laser beam that was powerful enough to vaporize anything from flesh to metal.

The hero fell to his knees and watched as the already-damaged Hylian Shield melted and his sword's blade shattered completely. More thunder rumbled and a bolt of lightning struck a large tree, setting it ablaze.

Link felt the ground quaking and looked up as the towering Dark One stepped forward, cackling triumphantly, knowing that his defeated human enemy's head would soon be mounted upon a spike for all to see.

"Please..." Link said weakly, "Spare me..." All that the fallen hero could do was look up into the vile red eyes of the victorious Demon King one last time. He braced himself for the end as the dark one brought down his mighty sword and the blade sliced through Link...

Link cried out in terror as he awoke with a start and sat up in bed, sweat was beading his forehead and he could feel his heart pounding intensely. The whole ordeal had been a bad dream, but it still terrified him since he'd been having that nightmare for weeks now.

After beating Ganon, the hero had hoped that everything would be okay. But, if there was one critical detail he failed to take into account; It was the strength of the Demon King's influence over Hyrule.

For weeks, everyone had been working hard to rebuild their beloved land of Hyrule and leftover monsters had been trying to hinder their progress. Even the Yiga were a big problem too. After the demise of Master Kohga and after news of Ganon's defeat spread, those crazy ninjas were craving for revenge.

In the last week alone, the Yiga's activities had increased like wildfire. First, they attacked a Hylian Army outpost and tried to destroy Kakariko Village. Then, just the other day, the Yiga tried to ambush Link and Zelda while they were having a relaxing day at the beach together.

With the sudden spikes in activity from Ganon's remaining minions and the nightmares getting worse as Link continued to have them, he was starting to wonder if something real big and nasty was about to happen. Were the nightmares also omens of bad things yet to come?

'I think I'll go talk to Impa,' The hero thought. Not bothering to go back to sleep, Link got out of bed and took a warm shower to calm his nerves before putting on a fresh pair of clothes. Once he was fully dressed, the hero of Hyrule walked out the door.

The rest of Kakariko Village was very quiet. Everyone else was asleep in their houses with the lights off and some lights were on as a few other people were awake. Link breathed in the fresh air, sighing happily as his still-shaken nerves finally relaxed.

"Ah, nothing like fresh air in the early hours of morning." The heroic Hylian commented. He looked at Impa's house that was nearby and began his short journey towards the elderly Sheikah's abode, walking up the steps and passing by the sleeping guardsmen at the bottom of the stairs.

Inside the house, Impa was meditating with her eyes closed as she sought her inner peace. Knock-knock-knock! The wise old Sheikah opened her eyes, hearing the sound of somebody knocking on her door and she wondered who was visiting her at this hour.

"Enter!" The wise old Sheikah said politely. The brown doors opened and Link walked into the room. Impa frowned as she saw him, having not expected him to be awake at this very hour. This was a very unusual sight to behold; the hero paying her a visit so early in the morning before dawn.

"What is it, Link?" Impa asked. "Do you realize that it's probably a bit too early in the morning for you to be up? Nonetheless, you look troubled. What is it, perhaps you can tell me what is keeping you from going back to bed?"

Link finally yawned, unable to hold back his tiredness any longer. "I know it's early, Impa." He replied, "But, after I had that really bad nightmare, I can't sleep a wink."

"Wait!" The old tribe leader held up her hand, Impa's eyes had widened and she was raising her eyebrows. "Please describe your dream to me." She suggested. "You've been having bad dreams lately and I think it's time for you to tell me about them, especially since I heard you wake up at night with a terrified scream once before."

Link laid it all down for Impa what he'd seen in the dreams; the fiery haired Dark One, a repeat of the Great Calamity, all of Hyrule destroyed, etc. Once the intrepid hero was done telling his story, a grim look folded upon Impa's face and she frowned.

"Hmmm!" The old Sheikah mused, "These dreams sound like omens of what's to come, especially in regards to your encounter with the dark one in your dreams. I will tell you this, that man appearing in your dream is not Ganon. Do you know anything about Demise?"

Link's heart pounded with intensity at the mention of that name. He'd heard it before, it was in the name of a place known as the Breach of Demise. But why did it sound so familiar and why did that name sound very important?

"The one whose hatred from which Ganon is reincarnated..." Impa explained, "Demise and his forces came out of nowhere millions of years ago. He sought to take the Triforce but the great Hylia stopped him and Demise was sealed away until he began to break free from his prison.

"It took the efforts of the first Link and the first Zelda to destroy him. But it wasn't the end as the Demon King's servant, the Demon Lord Ghirahim, went back to the past through a Gate of Time to resurrect Demise. Hylia's brave hero followed in pursuit and confronted the Demon Lord before defeating the revived Demon King."

"Yeah," Link rolled his eyes, finally remembering the stories that he previously heard, "Then Demise put a curse on Hyrule and his remains were sealed away in the Master Sword until he was reborn through Ganondorf."

Impa sighed desperately, "Well, the story doesn't matter since what's left of Demise must have somehow survived for all these years and is out there somewhere. If he's appearing in our nightmares, this can mean he is returning and Hyrule is in danger again."

"Yeah." The hero said warily, "And we dunno if we can beat Demise just like last time..."
