CHAPTER NINE
The odd feeling had started 2 weeks ago for Alexandreina. It had been like she could sense someone was in pain. From there it had only escalated over the 2 weeks that followed the strange sensation. Alexandreina had connected shared a dream with another woman - a pale skinned vampire with dark hair and weak bones. From that point Alexandreina has been thrust into the vampire's mind. Discovering the woman's name was Drusilla, a long lost descendent of the Romani Kladerash clan.
Drusilla is her ancestor.
A very distant ancestor, but an ancestor nonetheless.
A very persistent and curious ancestor at that. The woman had continued to force her way into Alexandreina's dreams simply for some social interaction where she wasn't treated as if she was crazy. Alexandreina had been inside Drusilla's mind and could see the rapid deterioration of her sanity after what had been done to her by Angelus. The man had chipped away and broken everything that made human Drusilla herself before turning her into a vampire and screwing with her mind even more.
It was sad.
Especially watching it happen from inside Drusilla's mind.
Alexandreina felt for the woman.
Which was why when Alexandreina felt a distinct pulling sensation mixed with a reassurance of safety, she knew she would be meeting Drusilla soon enough. As vein as it is, Alexandreina had put more effort into her appearance because of it. Though part of the obsession with a perfect appearance was also an effort to mask the nerves she truly felt at the implications of connecting with someone on this deep of a level.
it was a frightening concept.
A concept that took serious power to even attempt, let alone succeed in doing. Which begged the question; who was connecting to who?
She hoped it was Drusilla, to be perfectly honest. That amount of power was not something she found herself interested in having. Alexandreina liked the amount of power she had now. Her runes and intuition were the only real abilities she ever bothered tapping into. Alexandreina wasn't looking to change that now, not even if this connection was an interesting one to explore.
Alexandreina sighed.
She caught a glance at herself in the window of the Diner as she ate dinner. Her long dark hair fell in tight ringlet curls similar to that of Ella Eyre's hair. She wore a crimson red ruffled crop-top that barely covered her DD breasts and ended just above her pierced bellybutton. Her low waisted pants were plain black leggings that flared at the bottom. With her usual excessive amounts of silver jewellery and large hooped earrings, her olive skin glistened under the bad lighting of the little Diner. Alexandreina cast her hazel green eyes away from the reflection and chugged the last of her hot coffee. She dropped a few bills onto the table as she stood up again, scooping her large hippie handbag over her shoulder as she did so.
That nudging feeling from Drusilla was back again.
It was annoying.
And quite intrusive actually.
"Night, Alexandreina" Kira, one of the usual night time waitresses waved a little as Alexandreina began to leave. The young woman was much to bright and happy for Alexandreina's liking, but she offered a little wave of her manicured fingers anyway.
Alexandreina grimaced when the girl turned away again.
"Fuck" she muttered to herself, noting the fact that she might need to look for some place else to spend her time now. The last thing she wanted was for people to think that they were friendly just because she keeps coming back every few nights.
Her spine tingled.
Alexandreina whipped around when she felt a presence looming nearby.
Her Hazel green eyes narrowing on a man hidden in the darkness of the alleyway. She could barely make out anything about him aside from the bright glow of his peroxide blonde hair in the dimly lit alley. If it weren't for her own intuition she might have missed the fact that he was chain smoking and staring straight at her. Alexandreina scrutinised the man before she huffed and pulled out a cigarette of her own, bringing it to her lips and taking a long soothing drag of nicotine.
"You're lurking" Alexandreina stated, not bothering to look his way to know that he was a vampire and listening.
A gruff chuckle sounded from the dark alley.
Alexandreina took another drag from the cigarette as she felt Drusilla whispering in her mind again. It seemed the female vampire was requesting Alexandreina put some trust in her so that they could meet.
This was a bad idea... right?
Probably.
And yet, Alexandrine dropped the cigarette to the floor and stubbed it out with the toe of her heel, as she once again addressed the hidden vampire. "Drusilla sent you?" she idly assumed, sparing a glance in that direction when there was sudden movement.
A pale man with bright blue eyes that scrutinised her suspiciously stepped out of the darkness. His peroxide hair was unusual but oddly suited him in a billy Idol sort of way. The long black leather duster only further ensured he had a punk rock look about him. However, it was the way that he stood that caught her attention. He stood confidently and calmly but as if he were ready to jump into a fight at any moment.
It was intriguing.
She could certainly see why Drusilla was in love with the man.
"Dru says you can 'see her'" The vampire stated but it seemed like more of a question than anything else. "Wants me ta bring yah to 'er... but you already knew that, didn't yah" he said, his British accent thick.
Alexandreina hiked her handbag further up her shoulder and nodded her head in confirmation. "She's calling me again" she informed him dryly, not bothering to hide the tinge of annoyance in her tone. "She's getting impatient"
The vampire snorted.
"S'not good to keep 'er waiting then, pet" the vampire stated before beginning to walk ahead. The expectant glance in her direction told her that he wanted her to follow him.
Alexandreina sighed but followed nonetheless. Managing to catch up to him and fall into step with him. "Alexandreina" she told him casually as she followed him into the warehouse area of downtown Sunnydale.
"Spike" he stated as way of introduction
Alexandreina didn't bother saying anything more as they approached a warehouse.
Spike led her inside, casting a look at her over his shoulder that suggested he thought this was a bad idea too. Silently Alexandreina agreed that it probably was a bad idea to have come here. But it was already too late now anyway. It wasn't as if she could turn back and change her mind now. So, she forced herself to remain calm and followed him inside a surprisingly homely warehouse. Neither said anything as they continued through the warehouse to a dimly lit bedroom.
"Give us a sec" Spike said, giving her a look that told her to wait outside.
Alexandreina nodded.
She remained outside the bedroom as Spike descended the stairs and walked into the room. He lit candles to brighten the room before approaching the bed. A woman - Drusilla, was laying in the bed. The two whispered a conversation between them before Spike helped Drusilla out of bed and to stand.
"My sissy!" Drusilla excitedly called to Alexandreina.
Alexandreina wasn't sure why she felt as if Drusilla were her sister. Logically she knew it wasn't the case, but she felt spiritually connected as siblings to the vampire. "Hello, Drusilla" she offered the vampire a small grimaced smile before descending the stairs as well.
Drusilla pulled away from a hovering Spike.
Alexandreina watched the weakened vampire carefully. "You've been calling me" she said in question
Drusilla came closer and brushed a hand across Alexandreina's cheek tenderly. "'Course I have silly sissy" Drusilla laughed shrilly. "Your my lost sister. The moon told me so"
The moon?
Her brows furrowed slightly as she peered into Drusillas mind in an effort to understand.
That's when she saw it.
She saw the vision Drusilla had about them meeting. Alexandreina realised that the 'moon' was Drusillas intuition and it had guided Drusilla to find her. She could also see their odd connection from Drusillas point of view and felt the sisterly bond was stronger within Drusilla.
"Sissy sees me Spikey!" Drusilla cooed excitedly
"I see it, pet" Spike placated with narrowed eyes at the pair. He watched every move closely as if he were expecting something to go wrong.
"My lost sissy hears me!" Drusilla sung in loud excitement. "Can you hear Mrs. Edith too, Sissy? Mrs. Edith speaks highly of you, says one connection makes more connections. Do you hear her?" Drusilla bounced a little as she waited impatiently for Alexandreina to confirm.
Alexandreina nodded slowly.
Though it took her a minute to understand Mrs. Edith was the spirits of their ancestors that spoke to Drusilla.
"I hear them too" Alexandreina confirmed. "Mrs. Edith, i mean" she added for Drusillas benefit.
Drusilla smiled widely.
Alexandreina was disoriented by the whispers from the spirits while in Drusillas presence. She felt as if they wanted her to help the vampire. Though she couldn't know why they would want that, Alexandreina didn't bother questioning it. She sighed and took Drusilla's hands in her own. Giving them a comforting squeeze as she guided the vampire back to the bed. Drusilla began humming an old Kalderash tune and Alexandreina jolted in shock when she realised the humming was in her mind and not aloud.
Alexandreina's eyes widened and she stared at Drusilla for a moment.
Drusilla giggled knowingly.
"Well shit..." Alexandreina scoffed and chuckled lightly. "That's a pretty song. I always liked that one" she commented softly
"The prettiest of all the pretties" Drusilla crooned happily.
Spike looked between them with a bewildered look on his face. Though he didn't interrupt what was clearly a conversation his ears couldn't hear. Whether or not he thought they were both crazy, she couldn't tell.
And she didn't want to know.
This was a little crazy.
Drusilla was seemingly on the same page as Alexandreina in regards to the spirits wanting her to heal though. So when Drusilla pulled off her dress, Alexandreina wasn't surprised. But she did smirk in amusement when Drusilla tutted at Spike who had stepped forward to intervene. Alexandreina offered the confused man an apologetic shrug of her shoulders. She grabbed her handbag and dug through it until she found a few crystals with healing properties. Alexandreina sold them while giving Tarot card readings, so she had a few she could use now.
"What exactly are you doing? Not that I'm not enjoying the show, love" Spike asked
Drusilla wagged a finger at him for interrupting.
Spike sighed.
Alexandreina took pity on the man and explained what she was doing. "Crystal healing is an alternative medical technique. The crystals and stones are used to cure ailments and protect against disease. The crystals act as conduits for healing. The positive healing energy flows into the body and negative, disease-causing energy flows out"
That was the basics of it anyway.
It was a little bit more complicated than that, but she didn't think Spike cared to know more than that.
Spike scoffed, "Your both barmy. That right?"
Alexandreina and Drusilla both simultaneously shot him nasty glares for the comment. Neither liking the dismissal of something that was entirely real. It was more than just a 'belief' to them and their people. It's a way of life. Offering them a real connection to their ancestors and higher powers.
"Sorry, pet" Spike apologised to Drusilla as soon as he saw that he had upset the female.
Alexandreina rolled her eyes.
"Naughty Spike" Drusilla sniffled and looked at Alexandreina. "He doesn't see or hear the moon like we do. Poor Spike!" Drusilla cried out as if Spikes life must be horrible without a connection to the spirits.
Spike smiled tentatively at Drusilla, calming her down.
Alexandreina continued without paying the couples whispers of love much mind. It was nice Drusilla had someone. But Alexandreina focused on placing all her crystals on the bed as she began to recall which goes where.
Only to be interrupted by Spike asking more questions.
"Agate" Alexandreina stated the name of the bright pink crystal in her hand. "Tones and strengthens the body, heals emotional tension related diseases, stimulates the digestive system and heals skin disorders"
"On my head. My sweet little head" Drusilla grinned
Alexandreina nodded in agreement as she placed the small pink crystal on Drusillas forehead. "Calcite" she picked up the next one. Placing the small golden rock on Drusilla's solar plexus. "Enhances digestion and metabolism, strengthens the teeth, bones and joints, helps the organs to eliminate toxins, heals connective tissue and skin"
"Angelite" Alexandreina placed three of the muted blue stones on Drusilla's throat. "Supports bone density and helps with arthritis or fractures."
"Green Aventurine" she continued explains as she placed the rough dark green stone near Drusilla's heart. "Stimulates healing of the muscles and bones, relieves headaches and aids in sleep"
"Mrs. Edith says good dreams will come to me" Drusilla smiled wistfully
"Hopefully" Alexandreina agreed without missing a beat. She packed the rest of her crystals back into her bag. "It's time I go home again. I'll see you soon though, Drusilla"
Drusilla smiled and nodded.
"Soon, soon, soon Sissy" Drusilla crooned and wagged her fingers in a little wave.
Alexandreina waved back indulgently and glanced at Spike with a nod. "I'll let myself out. The crystals should take away some pain. Maybe give her a little more strength while you search for a cure"
Spike raised a brow but didn't comment.
Not that Alexandreina stuck around to wait for one. She just turned on her heel and headed back into the upper level of the warehouse. Alexandreina sighed as she exited the building and found it was almost time for the sun to rise again. She rolled her eyes and started the long walk back home.
Tonight had been a odd day.
Very odd.
Yet somehow she couldn't shake the feeling that in time it would make sense.
Alexandreina pursed her lips as she headed into the high school library. She was only here to help research because she wanted to go through Giles books. Her own collection was rather large but she was curious to see the selection that the Watcher has of his own.
Which was how she found herself helping the Slayerettes again.
Apparently Giles is hiding things.
Big surprise!
Alexandreina rolled her eyes and found herself reluctantly researching something called the 'Mark of Eyghon'. Clearly she and Willow were the only ones who knew where to begin looking. Though Alexandreinas knowledge was much more vast than Willows. Which was probably why she found what they were looking for first.
"Found something!" Alexandreina called loudly to the others. When they crowded to hear what she found, she spoke again. "It's not Egyptian, it's Etruscan. Mistaken for Egyptian by the design pattern"
Willow nodded, "That explains why we didn't find anything sooner"
"This says..." Alexandreina read from the book with interest. "'the Mark of Eyghon, worn by his initiates. Eyghon, also called the Sleepwalker, can only exist in this reality by possessing an unconscious host. Temporary possession imbues the host with a euphoric feeling of power.'"
Buffy sighed, "Yeah, but what about non-temporary?"
Alexandreina scanned the information in the book for an answer. She shook her head at Buffy and read, "It says... 'Unless the proper rituals are observed, the possession is permanent, and Eyghon will be born from within the host.'"
" I'm guessing eww!" Cordelia balanced in disgust
Alexandreina snorted.
"Oh! Listen to this... 'Once called, Eyghon can also take possession of the dead, but its demonic energy soon disintegrates the host, and it must jump to the nearest dead or unconscious person to continue living.'" Willow read from the book Alexandreina had been looking at.
Buffy furrowed her brows in confusion. "I still don't get what this has to do with Giles.
Alexandreina shrugged, "I don't know about Giles, but ancient sects used to induce possession for bacchanals and orgies" she informed them casually
Xander blanched, "Okay! Giles and orgies in the same sentence. I coulda lived without that one"
Buffy rolled her eyes before getting back on topic. "Uh, well, the dead guy's all puddly now" she pointed out
Cordelia smiled in relief. "So the demon's gone. There was no one dead to jump into. I mean, we're all not dead, right?"
Buffy frowned, "No, no ones dead..."
Xander also looked worried now. "But someone was unconscious..." he reminded the group with a horrified look on his face.
"Jenny!" Buffy yells in realisation
At her cousins name, Alexandreina stood with a worried look on her face. She didn't know what they were talking about but didn't find herself surprised Janna was in danger again. That seemed to be a trend with the Slayerettes. It was beginning to get quite annoying. Especially when she was constantly being dragged into their mess. Though when Buffy ran out the door Alexandreina didn't hesitate in following.
Despite her annoyance.
She would be having a long conversation with Janna after this...
Alexandreina let the adrenaline wash over her as she ran slightly behind Buffy all the way to Giles apartment. She arrived just in time to witness Buffy kick open the front door. Buffy immediately attacked Janna who's face was that of an ugly blue demon.
Eyghon, Alexandreina realised.
The Demon was possessing Janna and trying to kill Giles.
"Fuck" Alexandreina swore as she realised what was happening. Standing by as Buffy found Janna or Eyghon or whoever was in control of Jannas body at the moment.
Buffy kicked Janna/Eyghon hard in the jaw, sending her back over the couch and onto the floor. Though Eyghon wasn't down for long. The Demon got up again and walked around the couch, eyeing Buffy in hate. The Demon controlling Janna laughed deeply. Grinning as it looked at Giles and said, "Three down, two to go. Be seeing ya" before turning and running through the window, out into the streets.
Buffy crouched down beside Giles. "Are you alright?"
Giles shook his head, "Oh, Jenny! Oh, God!" He said frantically
Buffy pursed her lips. "Giles? How do we stop this?" Buffy asked
Giles apparently wasn't listening, too focused on what had just happened. "Oh, God, what have I done?" He mumbled to himself in pure horror. "I'm so sorry... I'm sorry" Giles muttered
Alexandreina kept quiet.
Buffy softened when she saw how upset Giles was right now. "Don't be sorry, be Giles. C'mon, we fight monsters. This is what we do. They show up, they scare us, I beat 'em up and they go away. This isn't any different!" Buffy insisted
"But It is different" Giles argued
"Because you don't know how to stop it?" Buffy questioned
Giles shook his head sadly, "No, Because I created it!"
Alexandreina just remained silent as she watched the two interact. Part of her couldn't believe what she was hearing, and the other part wasn't surprised. This wasn't nearly one of the worse things an all-mighty Watcher had done. However this time it was putting Janna in danger.
"I was twenty-one, studying history at Oxford. And, of course, the occult by night. I hated it. The tedious grind of study, the... overwhelming pressure of my destiny. I dropped out, I went to London..." Giles sighed guiltily. "I fell in with the worst crowd that would have me. We practiced magicks. Small stuff for pleasure or gain. And Ethan and I discovered something... bigger"
"Eyghon" Alexandreina assumed
Giles nodded, unable to meet Alexandreinas eyes. "Yes. One of us would, um... go into a deep sleep, and the others would, uh, summon him. It was an extraordinary high! God, we were fools"
"You couldn't control it" Buffy guessed where this was going
"One of us, Randall, he lost control. Eyghon took him whole. We tried to exorcise the demon from Randall, but it killed him" Giles explained before harshly correcting himself. "No. We killed him. We thought we were free of the demon after that. But now he's back. And one by one, he will kill us all"
Alexandreina sighed, "Three down, two to go?"
Giles mutely nodded.
"Then it's going after Ethan" Buffy decided and stood with a determined look on her face. "I better beat it there"
Giles stood as well with matching determination. "We'd better" he corrected
Buffy scoffed, "No, I'd better. Giles, you're barely mobile, and speed is of a serious essence here"
Giles reluctantly sat back down. "I don't know how to stop it without killing Jenny..."
Buffy nodded as if she'd already assumed as much. "I've got the guys working on it. I'll, um, try to contain it until we figure something" Buffy said before looking pointedly at Alexandreina.
Alexandreina go the message and followed Buffy towards the door where Giles couldn't over hear.
"Can you stay here with him?" Buffy asked quietly
Alexandreina nodded, "Yeah. I don't think I'd be much help fighting a Demon in my cousins body, anyways"
Buffy smiled in thanks before leaving.
Alexandreina watched the Slayer go in a moment of hesitation. It was true that she didn't want to hurt Janna, even if it wasn't really Janna. Harming people one considers family is still a sore spot for Alexandreina. Despite the situations being completely different, she would hate to be in a position where she needed to defend herself against 'Janna'.
'Cause she would always protect herself first.
Always.
As utterly selfish as that sounds, it's what her life had taught her to do. Alexandreina wasn't the heroic type. She did things for her own gain and survival, nothing more, nothing less.
Alexandreina sighed.
She turned around and shut Giles appartments door again. Looking into the living room she could see Giles wallowing over what has happened. Clearly the man felt guilty about it all. Not that she could blame him for that. He's the reason innocent people have died. He's the reason Janna is possibly gone forever.
He should feel guilty.
But she didn't say that to him.
Janna would fucking kill her if she had. So Alexandreina remained silent as wandered into the kitchen. Finding the kettle, she turned it on. "Giles? Want some tea?" She asked, sticking her head out from the kitchen
"T-tea? Uh, uh, sure" Giles stuttered and nodded
Alexandreina sighed at the sight of him. "Don't worry. We'll figure it out" she told him, trying to sound positive.
Giles grimaced but smiled softly at the attempt at assurances. "Uh, yes, I'm sure we will. Thank you. And- uh, for what it's worth, I'm sorry for endangering your cousin" He said, sounding deeply apologetic
Must really care about Janna...
Alexandreina simply nodded in acceptance. She was sure Buffy would figure out a way to fix this shit. The Slayerettes seemed incapable of letting any kind of Demon win. That worked out well now that she had something to loose too.
There's still hope.
And time.
Alexandreina wasn't giving up yet.
However Giles shooting up in alarm did induce some panic. He frantically looked at his forearm and spaced out for a moment. When he came to he looked panicked before realising where he was.
Alexandreinas brows shot up. "What happened?" She demanded
Giles looked alarmed for a moment as he stuttered out an explanation. "T-t-the Demon- or, uh, Jenny is close" he explained vaguely.
"Right" Alexandreina muttered with narrowed eyes. Somehow getting the feeling that he wasn't telling the entire truth. Though she decided not the question it at the moment.
Which was why she went to make them a cup of tea when the kettle boiled. Reluctant to leave him completely alone, Alexandreina found she could see his reflection in the microwave and kept an eye on him. His suspicious pacing when she was out of the room didn't go as unnoticed as he clearly hoped. Nor did the very moment he decided to try and do a runner.
"Alexandreina? I-I I'm going to be in the bathroom" Giles stuttered. "Upstairs"
"Sure" she called back with narrowed eyes on his reflection.
Giles, as she suspected, didn't head upstairs to the bathroom. Instead he went straight for the front door. Alexandreina rolled her eyes and followed the Watcher out the door. Knowing he was holding something important back, she kept to a distance as she followed him. Clearly he knew something he hadn't told them. But whatever self sacrificing plan he thinks he has surely wouldn't work.
Alexandreina wouldn't let it work.
Janna would hate herself.
So Alexandreina sighed in exasperation and followed the man. She followed him through the streets as he tried to look as calm as possible in public.
Eventually they reached the store she knew belonged to Ethan. She watched Giles burst through the doors and took off in a run to catch up. Alexandreina got there just in time to hear a commotion and Giles yelling.
"Eyghon! Take me!" Giles declared
Alexandreina stepped into the shop and took in the scene. The store was a mess now. Though that likely had to do with Janna- or Eyghon who was standing in the middle of the store. Eyghon tossed the table aside and turned to face Giles.
Giles look scared but bravely faced Eyghon. "Buffy, get out of here!" He whispered hurriedly as Eyghon slowly advanced on him.
Buffy shook her head frantically, "NO!" Buffy yelled as she quickly placed herself between them. "No!"
Eygojn stretched Janna's arm out at Buffy, and surprisingly sent Buffy flying into a pile of boxes. Eyghon grabbed Giles by the collar, pushing him down to the floor and stood hovering over him. Eyghon spoke, "I've been waiting a long time to do this" As she bent down to grab Giles.
Alexandreina stepped forward then.
She couldn't do nothing, she had to help it at least buy then some time to fix this.
However she was stopped by Angel who rushed into the store from no-fucking-where. Angel ran past her and grabbed Janna. Pulling Janna to the crate and violently banging her head into it. Taking Janna by the neck, Angel started to choke her with Willow, Xander and Cordelia watching. Alexandreina quickly moved to intervene but was stopped by Xander and Cordelia. She glared at them but they didn't move. Instead Cordelia gave her a reassuring nod that made her pause in her rush.
What the hell was this?
Willow was seemingly having the same issue with holding Giles. "He's killing her!" Giles protested loudly
Willow shook her head. "No! Trust me! This is gonna work!"
So Alexandreina remained rooted in her spot as she watched the scene play out. Wondering if she was going to regret this soon.
Angel continued choking Janna as Eyghon tried to fight back. Finally Eyghon had to jump bodies and that was when Alexandreina realised their plan. So she watched silently as Eyghon jumped into Angel's body, making the vamp drop an unconscious Janna to the floor. Angel himself doesn't remain standing for very long though. He's thrown back into a the wall as Eyghon struggles to take hold in his body. Angel started convulsing, his face twister and contorted as the demons inside of him fight. Eyghon suddenly appears on his face, apparently gaining the upper hand. But after a moment Angel's face shifts back to normal. It was only another moment of struggle before the demon inside Angel throws Eyghon out. Without a host body to occupy, Eyghon quickly crumbles into ashes.
It was over now.
Alexandreina let out a small breath of relief as that sunk in.
She turned to watch Giles comforting Janna on the floor away from the commotion. It was then that Janna regained consciousness. Giles smiled lovingly. "Jenny! Are you okay?" He asked
Jenny frowned in confusion, "Rupert..."
Interrupting the moment, Ethan got up and ran from the shop. Not actually surprising anyone with his cowardice.
Buffy sighed and addressed Angel. "You knew that if the demon was in trouble it was gonna jump into the nearest dead person"
Angel nodded, "I put it in danger"
Willow smiled and nodded in agreement. "And it jumped"
"I've had a demon inside me for a couple hundred years... just waitin' for a good fight." Angel shrugged
Buffy smiled softly at that. "Winner and still champion"
Xander pulled a face and changed the topic. "Uh, I think that Ethan guy disappeared again"
Buffy rolled her eyes. "Darn. I really wanted to hit him till he bled"
Cordelia shrugged, "Well, at least it's over"
For now.
It's over for now.
Until the next time Alexandreina has a heart attack because the Slayerettes put her cousin in danger. The thought made her mood sour instantly as she watched Janna cling to Giles.
