Author's Note: First Treasure Planet fanfic! I first saw the movie when I was in high school and fell in love with the father-son relationship built between Silver and Jim. I honestly tend to love parent-child dynamics between non-blood-related people in stories much more than potential romantic relationships. Anyway, long story short, I've gone back on a Treasure Planet obsession, recently discovered there was a planned sequel that will never see the light of day, and have some probably impossible dreams that will never come to pass, but I'm going to be starting to write more Treasure Planet fanfiction to get practice writing these characters and the world

Disclaimer: Disney owns Treasure Planet, and I'm merely playing around with these characters and the world they live in.

Theft and Ambush

A loud noise from nearby startled Silver awake, but he kept pretending to be asleep as he strained his ears for more sounds. He did roll onto his right side away from the source so he could adjust his mechanical arm into a weapon if need-be. There was always the possibility he'd just heard some night bird, though he had yet to see any wildlife in this strange forest. He then heard whispering, soft enough he couldn't make out the words, but he recognized the voice in an instant.

Conflicted feelings rose up in Silver as he heard Jim whispering to another, namely irritation, worry, and confusion. Jim's voice was coming from the opposite side of the camp further from the odd fortress-like structure he, the captain, and the doctor had holed up in. How had he managed that? It didn't take much to guess he was after the longboat. The other had crashed, so it was the only way to get off-planet, but Silver would be damned if he let the boy strand him here, Treasure Planet or not. It didn't sound like the rest of Jim's pitiful crew was with him though. Perhaps his plan was to steal the longboat and then bring it back to their makeshift base to pick up the others and get away. Scroop was aboard, but that hardly made him feel better. He was as bloodthirsty as they came and wouldn't hesitate to kill them all if he could, especially Jim. Scroop had it out for the lad ever since the first day of the trip.

This left Silver in a dilemma because he couldn't hurt Jim, he'd already tried back in the ship's launch bay and hadn't been able to shoot him when he had the chance. If Silver stopped Jim from taking the longboat now, there would be a commotion that would wake everyone which would put the lad in even worse trouble than he already believed, but on the other hand, he risked being stranded and dying on a distant planet with an unknown quantity of resources and no hope of rescue.

Because Silver was already awake and listening for it, he heard Jim's quiet footsteps creeping around the perimeter of their campsite. The less quiet footsteps accompanying him made metallic clicks like his right arm and leg, and Silver remembered the robot shouting at them from the fortress earlier in the day. That must be Jim's companion. He peeked his eyes open a sliver when they reached the longboat, his cybernetic eye giving him better vision in the dim firelight. Jim looked anxious and kept casting wary looks in his direction, but the darkness and his tricorn hid his face well enough that Jim couldn't see he was awake.

'Lad, I am not the most dangerous person to you here,' Silver thought with a lamentable sigh.

There were definite downsides to caring about others, something he didn't think he could do anymore outside of Morph. Thinking of the pink shapeshifter reminded Silver of the fear in his eyes as he hid – from him – behind Jim's shoulder, and his heart seized. He'd never lost his temper directly at Morph before, and now even he wanted nothing to do with him.

Silver couldn't help wincing when the longboat's engines turned on It was so loud, he was shocked none of the rest of the crew were stirring. If it were literally any other situation, he'd be furious with them slacking off. As it was though, he was the one who got to decide what to do without worrying about how it might look to the others. When the sound of longboat engine was further away, Silver carefully sat up and tracked its progress with his cybernetic eye and arm in the form of a gun. He couldn't kill Jim, but if he was taking the longboat back to the doctor and the captain, then he wouldn't hesitate to shoot it down just enough that it could fixed with some minor repairs and a little time. However, it didn't head to the fortress and instead lifted high into the sky heading straight for the Legacy.

Silver lowered his gun and stared puzzled after the retreating longboat. Why was Jim heading to the ship without the other two? Cutting your losses and escaping with your life at the expense of others was admittedly something Silver would do – had done – but Jim wasn't like that. Ah, right, the cannons. Silver had threatened to blow up their fortress at dawn if he wasn't given the map. Well, if that was how Jim was going to play, he could do the same. He wouldn't need to blow anything up if he already had the map, afterall. Now there was just figuring out how Jim had gotten to their campsite from such an odd direction.

And ignoring the squeeze of fear at the thought of Scroop encountering Jim on the ship.

Silver stood and made his way over to where he thought he'd first heard the boy speaking from. He'd been able to fix his right leg earlier in the evening, so it was able to support his weight again without locking up on him and freed his cybernetic arm for normal usage. As he moved, he peered down at the forest floor looking for any signs of Jim's tracks and found some light indentations along with some heavier blocky ones. He followed them with his eye all the way to a large moss-covered boulder, like they'd somehow crawled out from under it.

"What the devil…?" he muttered with a frown as he crouched down and touched the edge of the rock, then withdrew his fingers in surprise.

That wasn't a rock, but metal, and the underside had a smooth edge to it that, if he wasn't mistaken… he plucked at the edge with his fingers and grinned when he felt them catch and felt the fake boulder rise up on a hinge. So there was a secret tunnel to get to Jim's fortress from here and catch them off guard. When Jim came back from the ship (when), Silver would have some strong bargaining chips he could use to force the negotiations to go his way this time.

"Sorry, lad, but I already told you I hate to lose," he said with a shake of his head and returned to the rest of his sleeping crew.

He cast a quick glance in the sky at the lifeboat again and was glad to find it was too far away for any of them to shoot down. Now for the theatrics he wouldn't be entirely faking. He approached Turnbuckle, who was supposed to have been on watch and was instead asleep. Silver bared his teeth and slammed his cybernetic foot down on one of Turnbuckle's many limbs.

His scream startled everyone awake, but Silver was already lambasting him, "You miserable, useless sad sack of a rotten calamari! If I'd known ye were gonna slack off on the I job I gave ye, I'd have done it meself. Now thanks to your laziness, the boy's made off with the longboat!"

He pointed up in the sky for emphasis and was pleased to see panic and outrage in everyone's faces.

"Fortunately for you sorry lot, I found his footprints in the ground leading from a secret entrance that should take us straight to where the others are holed up," he said and stamped off in that direction, causing his now wide-awake crew to follow after him.

"Oh, Scroop's gonna have a field day with him once he gets there," Onus said as a gleeful aside to Bird Brain Mary who snickered appreciatively.

Nobody saw Silver's mechanical fingers twitch in a quick grasping motion or flash red. He led them over to the fake rock, found the edge again, and lifted it up easily. The first ones to look inside gasped, and he understood why. He hadn't expected Jim's secret tunnel to look like a ship's engine room. This was definitely a bizarre planet, but as long as they got the treasure it was supposed to contain, he didn't care.

"Everyone, move out and whoever's last, close the entrance behind you," Silver said and climbed down, landing with a clank upon the metal surfaces. His crew started dropping in behind him, and he added, "No one aim to kill just yet. If the lad comes back, we might need hostages."

Some of them grumbled a little but not enough for him to call them out on it. He switched his hand out for his pistol and kept his eyes peeled. There were no tracks down here, but there had to be at least one other entrance up to the surface that Jim had used to get down here. It was an entire network of tunnels, and it would be very easy to get lost without a heading. At last, Silver spotted another tunnel that appeared to just go straight up.

He held his pistol aloft and called back, "Remember lads, we're taking the captain and the doc alive, and we're going quietly."

They had superior numbers, firepower, and the element of surprise on their side. If they bungled something this simple, heads would roll. As they crept closer, Silver noticed that this entrance didn't seem to have a covering like the one they'd come in from.

"Mr. Onus," he whispered and beckoned his multi-stalk-eyed crewman forward. Onus joined him, and Silver said, "Peek out above the ledge and report what you see."

He hoisted the much smaller man up himself and watched the eyes swivel about, stiffen, and duck down.

Silver lowered him, and Onus whispered, "They both seem to be asleep over by a rock in that direction."

He pointed as if he were still looking at them, and Silver chuckled to himself. This wouldn't even be a challenge. He ordered some of them to the walls, one to cover their back, and another to block any escape from the front entrance while the rest would swarm them straight on. He gave the command, and they all moved. It was even easier than Silver had expected. Both adults had not only been caught completely off-guard, but Captain Amelia appeared to be significantly injured and was incapable of fighting back.

Even so, that didn't stop her from glaring death as he approached with a jaunty smirk and a tip of his hat. "Apologies for the rude awakening, Cap'n, but the lads and I were feeling keen for company and figured we'd invite ourselves over."

"Silver, you despicable, deceiving, treacherous pillock!" Amelia growled.

Silver staggered back and dramatically put a hand to his chest as if he'd been shot. "Pillock! Why, you wound me, ma'am, and after all these months we've been sailing together?"

Amelia scoffed. "All these months you and your merry band of marauders have been scheming to hijack my vessel, you mean?"

"Aye, the same!" Silver said with a jovial grin. Even captured, she was still a sharp, spunky woman. However, he let his smile fall and became more somber. "We both know why I'm here, Cap'n, now where be the map?"

To his annoyance, she smirked and said, "Somewhere you'll never find it."

Silver gave her an arched eyebrow. "We'll be seeing about that." He gestured at the captives. "Tie these two up properly and start overturning every nook and cranny if you have to for that map. It's a burnished gold sphere about ye big," he ordered and demonstrated the size with his hands.

The lust for treasure was a powerful motivator even he wasn't immune to, and with many enthusiastic bodies searching, it didn't take long to canvas the whole place, but indeed, the map was nowhere to be found. Seething with frustration and eye glowing red, Silver stomped over to Amelia and seized the front of her shirt.

She grimaced in pain, but he ignored it as he hauled her up and spat, "What the devil did you do with that blasted map, Cap'n?"

She had the gall to make a savage smile full of sharp teeth and said, "I already told you, Silver: it's hidden somewhere you'll never find it."

Angry mutterings rose up from his crew, and Silver was on the verge of retaliating against her when he noticed the doctor's expression. He hadn't said a word though he looked terrified and also puzzled. That odd combination was enough to make Silver remember that Jim had taken off in his longboat straight for the ship. In the same moment, it occurred to Silver that Morph had somehow tagged along with Jim to the surface, but the last time he'd seen his little companion before that had been in the launch bay when he was holding the map in his mouth and fell amidst a coil of rope. At the time, he didn't think anything of it, but now reviewing his memories, he couldn't recall seeing Morph fly back out of it.

Silver started chuckling and was pleased to see Amelia's smile falter. He dropped her back to the floor and addressed the room at large, "Boys, it seems the map was somehow left back on the ship this whole time, and our good little cabin boy has gone off to fetch it for us."

He could kick himself for that. He was right there and didn't bother to check. They could have already had Flint's treasure trove by now!

"Gag these two, douse all the lights, and don't make a sound until the lad comes back with the map," Silver directed in preparation for Jim's arrival, secretly hoping even more than before that Scroop didn't notice the boy's arrival onboard.

This was my take on how that in-between scene went down. We knew the start and end point and I did my best to extrapolate from there. I legit had no idea what to do with Doppler in this situation hence why he has no dialogue, but writing the dialogue between Amelia and Silver was an unexpected delight. I love them both. She's so sassy and proper, and he can be disarmingly charming when he wants to be.
