AN: I've run into a roadblock with this story, Im ass at writing in the first person, I'm not an amazing writer in 3rd person but my third-person writing is vastly superior, my main problem is repetitiveness and boringness, Im struggling to fix it (I'm using "I" wayyyy too much.) I had this realization about a quarter of the way through this chapter. I'm going to finish this chapter in the first person but if it ends up as bad as I think It'll be then I'm changing the main POV to 3rd person till I improve my first person. (I know I need to write in 1st person to actually improve but im not gonna ruin a story I really like writing just to improve my first-person writing.)
Remember words in italics are thoughts.
DI1's POV
I gaze at the dull grey wall of my cell. What did they do to me? They injected me with something and all of my energy disappeared, I don't even wanna escape anymore. After all the pain and torture they put me through I don't even wanna leave instead I just wanna sit in my cell and sleep.
*BANG* My door's kicked open and Alastor strides into my cell. "It's time for your third infusion, get up," he orders me to stand. I roll over facing the wall not caring about the punishment soon to come from my disobedience.
"I said get up!" I ignore the sadistic man. "NOW!" Once again I ignore his demands. Unsurprisingly his hand grip's my hair and he throws me against the wall. I manage to shift my shoulder so it absorbs the impact.
I stand up and glare at the man that cause's me so much pain. Even low on energy and feeling like I'm drowning in a pit of despair, my anger at this man is scorching.
"Listening? I'll make sure to punish you when you get back from the infusion," he grins. He knows I won't be able to defend myself even in the slightest after an infusion and he wants to take advantage of that.
We walk out of the room, my palms are sweating. I feel weird, my head feels clear and my energy returns. I need to get out of here, I need to get out, I need out, out, out, out. My will to escape increased tenfold.
We enter the white room. The grunts wheel the stretcher up to me and wait for me to lay down. I shift in a way that makes it look like I'm about to sit down, but instead of sitting down, I shove the stretcher into three of the grunts and Alastor, who hasn't left yet for some reason.
After I shove the stretcher into the grunts I run to a cabinet I know they keep scalpels in. I try to open it but find the cabinet locked. I keep pulling trying to get it open, it seems hopeless till the strange energy from before fill's my arms letting me rip the cabinet door off.
I reach in and grab two of the scalpels. *Crack* Alastor's whip cracks into my back sending me to the floor. Strangely enough, it doesn't hurt. I glare at him and roll out of the way of another strike. He brings the whip down at my head but I manage to sidestep it.
*Crack* A sudden strike from my left sends me flying into a wall. Alastor walks up to me and picks me up by my hair. "So you think you're some sorta big shot, you think you can attack me and get away with it, HUH?!" He slams me against the wall tightening his grip on my throat.
I don't care about the pain, I have felt much worse, what I do care about is the fact that I'm close to the man I hate more than anything in life and have two weapons.
I stab the scalpel in my left hand into his arm. "AHHHHHHHH!" He throws me to the ground screaming in pain. I grin, the man that put me through so much pain is getting a dose of his own medicine. One of the grunts presses a button causing a loud buzzing noise to scream throughout the whole building.
I have no clue what that noise is for but I doubt it's for anything good. "Come here you little shit," Alastor snaps trying to grab me. Of course, I don't let him. I duck under his arm and stab my second scalpel into his leg and twist it. He screams again, this time he drops to the ground clutching the wound.
I jump on top of his chest and drive my scalpel into his head. Over and over I drive it into his head till I'm covered in brain matter, it kinda reminds me of spaghetti.
One of the grunts pulls out some sorta gun and shoots it. Two bullets bounce off my chest. Glancing down I find no injury. Weirdly, I didn't take any damage but it doesn't matter to me. I rush the dumbfounded grunt and drive my scalpel into his neck, I'm sprayed in his blood but it doesn't matter.
The remaining 2 grunts charge at me. They're slow, all I have to do is kick their feet and they fall to the ground. With simple slash's to their throats I make sure they'll never bother me again.
I walk up to Alastor's corpse and spit. "That's what you get for always being mean." "I need to find some way out of here," I walk to the door and open it.
I peer out the doorway. Instead of the long empty hallway that I was expecting I'm met with a group of grunts charging at me. "Get her she's in there!" One of the grunts shouted pointing at me.
"Well looks like stealth's out of the question," I mumble opening the door and charging at the grunts. The strange energy warms my body while I attack the incompetent grunts. None of the grunts have weapons they're just trying to grab me or pin me.
Slashing, clawing, biting, punching, kicking, I did anything to get them off of me. Soon I stand in a pool of blood and bodies while trying to catch my breath. "*Huff*You guys *Huff are stupid*" I insult the dead grunts while catching my breath.
After catching my breath I run down the hallway looking for anything that looks like an exit. I turn a corner to find another group of grunts running at me. "Ugh! Do you guys ever stop," I whine as a slit the throat of one of the grunts.
The braindead grunts charge at me, like the last group the end result is me standing over their bodies. After dealing with the new pack of grunts I run further down the hallway.
I find another pack of grunts, this one is smaller. They're is probably only about 6 or 7 of them. Unlike the grunts from before, I hid from these ones and let them pass me by. After they're gone I run in the direction they came from.
I find a huge flight of stairs going upwards. I'm ready to go somewhere else but I hear footsteps coming from my left and right. Seeing no better place to go I run up the stairs.
I pant holding my stomach, "What *Pant* do you *pant* need so *pant* many stairs for," seriously there were like 100 flights of stairs. I look around the room I just entered, it's large and spacious, and the walls and floor are plain grey. On the other side of the room is a large door.
"That might be an exit," I get hopeful. My previous exhaustion is forgotten as I run to the door praying it's the exit. With a *Thump* I'm thrown to the ground by a strong impact to my head.
My head spins from the impact. Looking up still a little dizzy I see a masked man, he wears a plain black cloak that covers most of his body and a black flat mask, the only part of his face the mask doesn't cover is his electrifying blue eyes.
He stands in the middle of the room facing me motionless, if it wasn't for the kick to the head from earlier I would think he was a statue. He stands in the way of the door. I have to go through him to get to the door.
I run at the masked man trying to kick his legs out from underneath him. He doesn't even flinch when my kick connects with his leg. I sprint to his right side hoping to be able to run away and not have to fight. My hand's centimeters away from the door when I feel the all too familiar feeling of my hair being yanked. The masked man grabs me by my hair and toss's me away from the door.
I crash into a wall with a *Thump* Ok I guess we'll have to do this the hard way. Running at him I try stabbing his leg only to have him sidestep me and kick me into the wall again.
"Ugh, can you quit doing that, fight me like a man!" He doesn't respond verbally but I swear there's amusement in those cold eyes. I was preparing to rush him again but before I could do so my vision starts going fuzzy."What the?" I sway on my feet. My feet give out under me forcing me to drop to the ground. I try to keep my eyes open but the warm embrace of sleep gently whisks me unconscious.
DI1's POV
I'm jolted awake by burning pain across my face. I attempt to stand but find my arms and legs bound. Standing in front of me is Dr. Wilkes, he holds shattered glass.
Quickly surveying the room I realize I'm in the infusion room. "DI1, you've been given special treatment since the first day you arrived, but even still you tried to escape, I wonder what you think I should do about this," he frowns.
"..."
"What should your punishment be?" He walks over to one of the screens and starts doing something.
Looking down I mumbled, "I shouldn't." He turns and glares daggers at me.
"You've set back are progress by at least a week if not more but you think you deserve no punishment, RIDICULOUS!" He shouts slamming his hand on the screen.
Pain even greater than what I normally endure from the infusion courses through my body. I beg and plead for him to stop like always and like always he doesn't listen instead he stands there hysterically laughing.
I try to escape, try to call upon the strange energy that gave me strength but nothing happens. Any method of escape I attempt fails. The pain's more than mind-numbing, I feel like I'm going to explode. It doesn't take long for the pain to get the better of me. When the pain drives me over the edge my mind does the only thing it can, fragment, in an attempt to protect itself.
DI1's POV sometime later
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," I apologize to Dr. Wilkes, he's putting me in the machine that makes everything hurt. "I'm sorry I was bad I'll be good, please don't hurt me," he doesn't stop. "PLEASE! I'LL BE GOOD DON'T MAKE IT HURT AGAIN."
"DI1 calm down, you didn't do anything wrong." I sigh, if I didn't do anything bad then he doesn't need to use the machine on me. "Like I've told you multiple times we do our best to make it hurt less, if we were punishing you it would hurt way worse."
"If I wasn't bad then I don't have to go in the machine, right?"
"Like I told you three hours ago your infusions aren't punishments they're... gifts."
"A gift doesn't hurt!"
"If you keep talking back I'll turn this infusion into a punishment."
"..." I wisely shut up not wanting to feel the doctor's wrath.
"Good, I'll give you a count down. Infusion starts in 5,4,3,2,1, starting now," he gives me a countdown to my pain.
DI1 an hour or so later
Some grunts drag me to a white room and put a strange jacket on me that binds my arms. I sit on one of the white beds watching the grunts work around the room. I would try to escape but ever since my first escape attempt they've pumped me full of a drug that makes my aura really weak. Oh yeah, the doctor explained that the strange energy that I was feeling was my aura, without my aura I stand no chance of escaping.
One of the grunts walks up to me holding a gun with a needle sticking out of the barrel. "What's that for?"
"A drug we were ordered to give you," the grunt surprisingly answers.
"Whats it do?"
"It's called ED48, the ED stands for emotional death, this drug almost completely destroys the chemicals in the brain that make you feel emotions."
My eyes widen and I try to stand up and get away from the horrible drug. Of course the grunts don't let me. "Grab her and hold her down she's trying to get away." Two grunts grab me and shove me down onto one of the beds, I try wiggling out of their hold but they're too strong.
The grunt that so kindly gave me the description of the drug jabs the needle gun into my thigh and pulls the trigger. I still struggle even with the needle in my leg. It doesn't take long for the drug to take effect, the anger, fear, and adrenaline that were coursing through my veins disappeared leaving me shaking.
I relax in the hold of the grunts, there's no point in fighting them they've already injected me, and my anger's long gone. I rack my nails across my face, the scratches I made across my face burn. I couldn't care less, my already weak will faded, and I let them drag me to my cell.
I'm thrown into my cell by some grunts. This cell is different than the old one, it's much deeper in the facility and it's more secure I haven't even had a single chance to escape since I've been moved down here.
While not being able to escape is undesirable my new keeper is a lot more tolerable, she doesn't hit me or anything like that, she doesn't even punish me. Her name's Adalie, she's pretty, tall, and nice.
I lay on my bed waiting for the next infusion, the normal fear and dread I would be feeling is absent. I don't have to wait long, a grunt knocks on my door and orders me to face the wall and put my arms behind my back, I follow his orders. He walks in and handcuffs me. After he cuffs me we walk to the infusion room.
I enter the room and make my way to the machine not even fighting the grunt guiding me. I sit down and get strapped down. "Hello DI1," Dr. Wilkes greets. "Today we're doing something a little different, instead of these smaller infusions we're upping the amount of dust, instead of 1 infusion's worth we're using 10 infusion's worth and we'll increase the amount by a factor of 10 for the next few days."
I nod, this is gonna hurt. "Why?"
"Why?"
"Why are you infusing more dust than normal is there a reason?"
"We need to calculate your maximum dust threshold and how quickly you can purify dust," Dr. Wilks explains pushing buttons on the screen used to control the infusion machine.
"Ok..."
"We're starting in 5,4,3,2,1, now," he presses the button and another session of agony starts.
After the extremely painful infusion I was monitored for a bit and then sent back to my room. For the next few days I repeated this cycle, waking up, getting a larger infusion then being left in my room. Finally, after five days, the cycle was broken, the doctor found whatever data he needed and quit upping the amount of dust, unluckily for me he didn't bring the amount back down so every time I go for my tri-daily infusion I have a lot more dust infused into me meaning a lot more pain.
Right now I'm sitting in my cell eating lunch. In about ten minutes I have to go participate in some tests. I don't enjoy the food, I haven't been able to enjoy anything since they injected that drug into me. When I look into the mirror my once bright silver eyes are dull and faded.
I finish my food and almost on cue a grunt bangs on the door yelling at me to get against the wall, I do so with no complaint. I'm soon on my way to whatever test I need to do.
DI1's POV
There's a large red dust crystal in my hand. "Um..."
"DI1! Do you realize what you just did!" The doctor shouts.
"I don't..."
"You just created a dust crystal. We haven't even begun to understand how dust forms and yet you can create it seemingly at will."
"Ok..."
"Try and make an ice crystal," he orders.
I visualize a cold blue crystal and push my aura out of my hand into the air, my aura glows light blue and forms another crystal, this one is cold to the touch and light blue.
"Amazing!" The doctor snatches the crystal from my hand and inspects it. "It's perfectly normal, it might even be a little more potent than usual."
Suffice to say he loves my new powers. We spent the next couple of hours testing their limits, I can only make crystals so large and I can't use them, the doctor promised to teach me soon. I forgot to mention that I'm receiving an education from the doctor, he gives me books and homework that I have to do or else I get punished.
I'm sitting in my room reading through my history book, I've read it like four times. Some of the stories in it detail historical figures escaping from confinement and torture so I try to find any good methods of escape that would work in my situation, none have been helpful so far.
*CLANG* *CLANG* "You know the drill, face against the wall arms behind your back." I don't have any more infusions today why's he here. I get against the wall and let him cuff me without any argument. He proceeds to walk me out of my cell to one of the numerous white rooms.
Waiting for me in the room is a blue-haired female grunt. The male grunt that brought me here left leaving me alone with the blue-haired woman. "Come on we need to get you washed up," she ushers me over to a showerhead and undresses me.
After she stripped me she brought out a strange smelling liquid put it on a rag and scrubbed me down ruffly. After she scrubbed me down she dried me with a towel and clothed me in a new hospital gown. "You look much better," she sounds pleased with her work.
"Um, why are you... doing this? I don't see why I can't clean myself," the women's soft face and blue eyes smiled at me gently.
"Not only is it my job to make sure you're ready before surgery I also enjoy helping little kids like you that've had the misfortune of being stuck in a place like this," her eyes mist over while she's talking.
"If you like helping so much why don't you help me get out of here?" I think my question is pretty fair, if she wanted to help so bad why not just help me get out.
"Oh, honey. I'm sorry but I can't, I'm trapped here just as much as you, if I try to escape the doctor will activate his toxins and kill me, the same thing ell happen to you if you try to escape."
"Toxins?" What the heck is this woman talking about?
"Yeah the doctor has toxins inside every staff member and patient in the facility, if you escape or act up he'll activate them," she grabs a stretcher from a closet and lays me on it.
"I didn't know that was a thing." This is a huge blow to my escape plans if I try to escape the toxins will activate and kill me. "Earlier, you said you wash people before surgery does that mean I'm having surgery?"
She lets out a loud *Sigh* "Yes... we're on our way to the operating room right now."
"What do I need surgery for?"
"You don't need surgery... but they'll force you through it for their sick experiments," She sounds disgusted.
"Do you know what they're going to do to me?"
"They're going to implant artificial dust organs into you, they do it to all the subjects, I'm surprised they waited this long for you you've been here a while, longer than any living subjects anyways..." she mumbled the last part under her breath.
"Will it hurt?"
She stopped pushing me and exhaled loudly. "I won't lie to you, during the surgery you'll be unconscious, but if you wake up after the surgery you'll be in more pain than you've ever been in your entire life, even more than the infusions." She looks away in shame.
"..." I don't know what to say in response to that.
The rest of the ride was silent. "We're here," the lady whose name I still don't know announced.
"What's your name?"
She looks down at me confused "Leya what's yours?"
"DI1"
She shakes her head "No your real name."
It's my turn to look confused "Real name? My name's DI1."
"Don't worry I won't tell anyone if you tell me your real name."
"My name's DI1 that's my only name, DI1 IS my real name."
She looks down at me with an emotion I can't describe. "Ok DI1, promise me if you ever see me again you'll say hi." I nodded. "Don't nod promise me."
"I promise."
She shakes her head again "What are you promising me?"
"I promise to say hi to you next time I see you," I spoke the full promise.
A bright smile spreads across her face almost hiding the weird look in her eyes. "Thanks, see you later DI1." With that said she knocks on the door greets one of the nurses, who brings me into the room and leaves.
The bright white room reeks of chemicals. Don't they have enough white in this place? In the center of the room is a flat surgery table covered in disposable blue paper. The walls are lined by different tools like scalpels, bone saws, weird tube machines, and more. It's all illuminated by a bright white light directly above the surgery table.
The nurse that wheeled me into the room grabbed a syringe filled with a green liquid and stabbed it into my arm. I don't bother trying to fight her off or to fight my sleep I let the sweet embrace of sleep lull me into the realm of dreams.
DI1's POV ?
I'm surrounded by a snowy forest, the moon shines from above through a hole in the clouds, and there's a path leading through the forest which I'm walking down. I'm dressed in unfamiliar clothes, old tattered shorts, and a ripped and stained T-shirt.
There's snow falling slowly covering me with its powdery chill. I've never seen snow before, I've never even seen the moon before. They're beautiful, even someone like me who's had their emotions destroyed by drugs meant to make you more complacent can enjoy their beauty.
The more I walk down the snowy path the more the path thins and becomes more overgrown. I'm shoving tree branches out of my way because there's more trees than path at this point.
I trip on a root and crash to the ground, instead of the chilling embrace of snow I find myself crashing into a red cloak sprawled in the snow. I greedily wrap the cloak around my body to protect myself from the cold.
"I don't know where you came from but thanks for the warmth," I thanked the cloak that couldn't respond due to it being an inanimate object. After wrapping up in the cloak I stand up and resume my trek. I'm forced to crawl under some thick thorny bushes. After getting past the bushes I stand up and scan the area.
In front of me is a playground, something I've only seen in my books. There's a red slide entangled in thorns, next to the slide there are swings covered by thorns as well. I walk up to the thorn-covered playground to investigate.
All the equipment is covered in thorns so playing on them doesn't seem to be the best option. I look around a little more before turning around and walking away. It seems empty and playing doesn't seem like to be the best thing right now, I need to get warm.
Walking away I'm broken out of my musing by the sound of sobbing. "Somone please help me..." A voice whispered behind me. Turning around I look for the source of the sound. There's no one in my immediate vision but judging from the sounds of crying from underneath the play area I can guess their location.
There's no real reason to help this person it's likely they'll be more of a liability than an asset. Even with this knowledge filling my mind I still walk to the play place and began trying to help the girl. The sobbing continues. "Hey it's all right I'll help you," I tried to reassure her but she continues sobbing.
I ripped myself a path to the girl with my numb blue hands. Now that I'm closer I can see her better. She looks like me! Her appearance is shocking. She looks very similar to me, her eyes are silver like mine but instead of being dull they seem to shine, her hair is shorter but it's the same color, she wears a hospital gown like what I normally wear, she's also a little smaller than me.
I reach my hand out to the girl. "Come on grab my hand I can pull you out of there." The girl looks up at me with tear-filled eyes and slowly reaches her hand out to me. My eyes widen, her arm from the fingers to the shoulder is black. When I grasp her hand it's cold to the touch. I start pulling her out of the thorns, she cries out in pain when some of the thorns dig into her flesh.
I yank her away from the thorns and fall onto the ground. She tackles me and sobs. I pat her back awkwardly. The fact that her arms and bare feet are black and cold to the touch is concerning. "Hey, little girl I'm sure you must be scared but we need to get somewhere warmer it's freezing my hands are numb and I'm sure you're not doing any better."
She glances up at me with her big innocent eyes and tilts her head to the right like a confused puppy. "Ok listen my name's DI1 what's yours?"
She grins at me "Ruby Rose." Ruby responded.
"Ok, Ruby we're both freezing we need to stand up and find somewhere warmer, ok."
She nods at me happily "Ok!"
I stand up with Ruby still in my arms, even though she's only a little smaller than me she's not even a quarter of my weight, she's really light. I place her on my shoulders and begin walking into the forest. The path from before ended so now we're just walking deeper into the forest.
"Hey DI1 where are we?" Ruby asked me.
"I don't know. You seem like you've been here for a while do you know anything?"
"No, I just remember being really cold, so cold I couldn't feel my legs but then when you got close to me I could talk and slightly move, now I'm pretty sure I can walk." She was so cold she couldn't talk?
"Do your arms or legs hurt?" They're black, everything I've read in my health books says black limbs mean death but she can move them just fine.
"They were numb before you found me but they don't hurt." She wiggled her feet to prove her point.
"That's good when did they turn black?"
"Ummmm, I don't know they've been like this for a while." A while huh? My arms are blue from the cold I wonder if I'm gonna end up with arms like hers. My feet are blue too, I have no shoes.
"There's some sorta rocks over there we should go check 'em out," Ruby points to two square rocks a little ways away. I walk over to the rocks.
I read the rocks aloud "Summer Rose, Thus kindly I scatter, and Ruby Rose, it doesn't matter what others think I'm going to live my life how I want and I want to be a huntress."
AN: Well this chapter took me forever to write, Queue the excuses: A close friend got off probation so we spent like a day and a half partying and I went through this chapter and changed it from past tense to present, why because I can. Besides those two reasons, I have a life and job outside of FF that I had to take care of.
About what I said at the top of the chap I don't think I'm changing to 3rd person anymore but there's still a chance.
WARNING THIS PARAGRAPH HAS SOME SPOILERS FOR LATER IN THE STORY! IF YOU DON'T WANT SLIGHT SPOILERS SKIP TO THE NEXT PARAGRAPH NOT UNDERLINED! Ok so basically Ruby's not gonna be with WBY, I need someone to fill that spot, I don't wanna use an OC, so any ideas of who I could use would be greatly appreciated, Adam is under consideration right now just because I think it's doable but I really want a female.
It would be cool if any reader of this story could go and check out my other RWBY story "The Silver Eyed Monster."
Please review it helps motivate me, if I were to post a chapter and get 0 reviews I might not update that fast but even one or two reviews can make the next chapter come out days faster even if the review is rude I ask for honest criticism, not flattery. Thanks for reading =)
