The Truth Behind The Light
Chapter 3
Recap: "I can't have you going around telling anyone what you know, my boy. You must understand that what I do is for the greater good of everyone." Dumbledore stated. Severus' eyes grew wide as his mind worked out just what the headmaster planned on doing.
"Obliviate." He muttered, sending a white spell out, erasing the recent memories of what had been discovered.
Continued: Severus groaned slightly as he opened his eyes lying in the bed in his private quarters. He glanced around for a moment in confusion as he struggled to remember just how he'd gotten to his room when he last remembered sorting through his classroom to ensure he had everything set up and ready for the first potions class. He frowned for a moment, closing his eyes to concentrate on seeing his mind, searching for anything that didn't seem like it shouldn't belong. His angered spike when the memories of his son seemed deeper than they should have been and faded, like someone had attempted to completely erase any thoughts of the little boy. He continued to sit in silence as he sorted through old and new memories, his anger growing as he realized someone had indeed attempted to Obliviate him. He pulled himself out of his mind, casting a simple Tempus to reveal what time it was. He couldn't help but frown when he realized it was nearly time for the students to arrive. He quickly changed into his normal robes before he stormed out of his rooms, heading from the dungeons to the Great Hall.
"Severus my boy, how nice of you to join us." Dumbledore stated with a smirk, the grandfatherly twinkle in his eyes. Severus simply ignored him, taking his seat next to Professor Quirrell. His eyes roamed the Great Hall as the students filled in, silently watching as his snakes took their seats, many of them bowing their heads to him in greeting when they caught his gaze. He watched as Professor McGonagall walked into the Great Hall once everyone had settled with the 1st year students. His eyes instantly sought out Harry and Zia, feeling his heart swell at the thought of just how close his son was. He saw the look of amazement on their faces along with the other first years as they stared around the Great Hall mesmerized. He glanced at the Sorting Hat as it was placed on the stool in front of the everyone, waiting for it to begin its normal ballad.
Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hates sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So, try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in
Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring nerve, and
Chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart.
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil.
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind.
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
TO achieve their ends.
So out me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!
A warm smile appeared on Severus' face for a brief moment as he watched the excitement on his son's face.
Harry glanced at the teacher's table, noticing Professor Snape seemed to be watching him. He slowly raised his hand slightly to wave at the man before he turned his attention back to Zia. His sister glanced around the Great Hall, amazed at the night sky and floating candles that made up the ceiling.
"This is beautiful Harry." She whispered, holding his hand tight. He turned his attention back to the hat as it began its song explain the four houses. He couldn't help but smile slightly as he thought possibly being in the Slytherin House with Professor Snape or being in the Gryffindor house like his parents had been. The Professor that had led them from the boats stood on the raised platform, lifting the hat from the stool that it had originally been placed upon.
"When I call your name, you will step onto the platform where I will place the sorting hat on your head. Once you have been sorted into your house you will go and sit at the appropriate table until the sorting has finished." Professor McGonagall announced. Harry couldn't help but zone out slightly as he glanced around the Great Hall. He felt Zia carefully take his hand, giving it a small squeeze to pull him from his thoughts. He glanced at her for a moment before he quickly turned his attention back to the Sorting Ceremony. His green eyes glazed at Professor Snape for a moment, noticing the potions professor seemed to be watching him with a type of concern written across his face for a brief moment. Harry was silent as he turned his attention back to Professor McGonagall.
"Harry Potter!" she called, glancing up from the scroll in her hands as her eyes searched the cluster of first years for the set of twins that was gracing the halls of Hogwarts. Her eyes landed on Harry's first as he moved to step up onto the podium. The young boy looked terrified as the hall broke out into whispers, the older years craning in an attempt to get a view of the Twins That Lived. Zia glanced around as the whispers grew slightly louder when the hat was placed on her brother's head. After several long minutes she couldn't help but hold her breath, watching as the hat seemed to be considering which house to place him in far longer than any of the other students had taken. Her hands were clutched together as she watched Harry's facial expressions, attempting to catch any glimpses of what his reactions to the hat's comments were.
"Better be SLYTHERIN!" the Sorting Hat suddenly announced, sending the Great Hall into complete silence. Harry slowly raised his shaking hands to pull the hat from his head, not oblivious to the stares he was receiving from the other three houses, as well as the one that would be his own. Zia watched as he took a shaken breath before he slowly walked towards the table, claiming the empty spot beside Draco. Zia noticed he kept his head bowed as the whispers started once again, her ears catching a few comments made from the Gryffindor table to her right. She glanced at him for a moment before she turned her attention back to Professor Snape, noticing he seemed to be watching Harry again.
"Zia Potter!" Professor McGonagall called, recapturing the entire halls attention.
Severus couldn't help but frown as his charcoal eyes roamed the Great Hall, catching some of the whispers from the older students.
"T-t-the po-o-o-or b-boy. What w-w-would his p-p-parents th-h-h-hink?" Professor Quirrell muttered beside Severus, catching his attention. Severus glared at the stuttering defense professor.
"I'm sure Lily and James would be proud of both of their children no matter what house they were placed in." he stated, his tone leaving no room for an objection. Severus silently turned his attention back to the Slytherin table, ignoring the sorting hat as it placed Zia in the Ravenclaw house. He noticed the terrified look that flashed across Harry's face for a moment at the thought of being separated from his 'twin' for the first time since he could remember.
"Now that the sorting has finished I would like to remind all students that venturing in the Forbidden Forest is forbidden and this year the 3rd floor corridor is forbidden to all those who do not wish to die a most gruesome death. Now enjoy your meal." Headmaster Dumbledore stated, clapping his hands together. Severus turned his attention to his snakes, frowning when he noticed Harry simply staring at the food in front of him, before the eleven-year-old turned his attention to search for his sister. Zia gave him a reassuring smile from where she was sitting at the Ravenclaw table, clearly attempting to cheer her brother up. Draco glanced at Harry, frowning when his cousin continued to ignore the food.
"You need to eat something Harry. Professor Snape doesn't like for any of us to skip meals." One of the third years that was sitting close to them commented, clearly noticing the silent first year.
"I'm really not all that hungry. I ate candy on the train." Harry easily lied, attempting to ignore the look he was receiving from Draco. The Malfoy Heir glanced up at the teachers' table, noticing that Professor Snape was watching them with a frown on his face. He raised his fork slightly, gesturing to Harry. The blonde-haired boy quickly elbowed the boy next time, failing to notice the sharp flinch he made. Severus couldn't help but frown, seeing the look of pain that flashed across his son's face. He glanced at Professor Dumbledore for a brief moment before he turned his attention back to Harry, finally managing to catch his attention. He once again gestured for him to eat before he returned to his own meal.
Zia frowned slightly as she watched Draco placed a small amount of food on her brother's plate, figuring that he wasn't going to want to eat dinner simply for the fact Dudley had used him as a punching bag before they'd left their aunt and uncles house for the train station. She couldn't help but hope that he would at least eat something before they retired for bed since neither of them had gotten the chance to eat before boarding the train. After several moments Harry finally moved to pick up his fork, taking a small bite of the potatoes, figuring he wasn't going to escape that concerned looks he was receiving from his sister, Draco, or Professor Snape.
Professor Snape watched as his perfects led the first years down to the dungeons were the Slytherin common rooms were located, silently debating with himself if he wanted to tell his son the truth or let it rest for a while. He walked through the hallways, intending to stop in his private chambers for a moment before he went to have the beginning year speech to introduce himself to the first years as well as go over what he expected of his Slytherins as well as the rules.
Harry was silent as he stuck to Draco's side, glancing around as he watched the wizards in the paintings move around, talking with each other. He couldn't help but feel amazed, a small smile crossing his face for the first time since the sorting ceremony. The perfect leading them stopping in front of a stone wall that had two marble snakes crossed over it like spears.
"This is the entrance to the Slytherin common rooms. The password is Pureblood and remember that it is forbidden to give the password to anyone outside your own house. No one aside from Slytherins are allowed within the common rooms." The perfect explained. Harry's eyes grew wide as he listened to the snakes' hiss what sounded like a greeting, grabbing Draco's arm.
"Did you here that?" he whispered, his eyes locked on the marble snakes that had moved, revealing an entrance way between them.
"Hear what?" Draco questioned confused. He glanced at his cousin, raising an eyebrow at his odd behavior. Harry blushed before he shook his head, following the perfect into the common room. He glanced around at the green and silver decorations. His gaze landed on a portrait that was hanging above the fireplace, noticing the wizard seemed to be watching all of them.
"They say that's Salazar Slytherin, the founder of the noble house of Slytherin. But he never says anything, so no one is completely sure," A female voice stated behind him causing him to jump. He glanced over his shoulder, noticing the frown that had appeared on Draco's face.
"Harry this is Pansy Parkinson. Pansy this is Harry Potter." Draco stated, gritting his teeth as he forced the fake name out. He wanted nothing more than to announce that his name was Hadrian Snape and he was proudly his cousin.
"How come he doesn't speak? I heard several of the portraits on the way here talking." Harry questioned, ignoring the annoy look on Draco's face.
"No one knows. There are some theories that the portrait wasn't properly charmed or that it wasn't painted properly to begin with." One of the third years explained. Harry glanced back at the portrait, frowning slightly when the old wizard gave him a small smile for a brief moment. He blinked when Draco pulled him away from the fireplace, out of the older students' way as they claimed the chairs surrounding it. He glanced around as he was led over into one of the corners.
"If I can have your attention there are several things I would like to go over with you before Professor Snape gets here. My name is Marcus Flint and I am your sixth year perfect as well as the Slytherin Quidditch captain. The common room is sectioned off for each year so first years remember that your area is closest to the bookshelves. If any of you need help with the assignments during the term you are welcome to ask for help from one of the older years. Another thing that I am going to address that Professor Snape will as well is the fact on house unite. Outside of these walls you are reminded that you stand together, any problems are NOT to be taken care of out there. We are the house that is most looked down upon thanks to certain professors…favoritism. You do not fight with your housemates because that will make us seem divided and will make us even more of a target." The perfect continued to explain. Harry glanced around the common room and noticed Professor Snape was standing in the shadows, clearly listening to what was being said. His attention continued to wander, once again drawn to the portrait hanging over the fireplace. Draco suddenly elbowed him again, drawing his attention back to their head of house.
"My name is Professor Snape and I am your head of house. If you have any problems I ask that you first take them up with one of the six perfects behind me before you come to me personally. Do not take that as I do not care about your problems, that simply means that if it is something of minimum it is the duty of a perfect to handle. I will remind each of you that it is against my policy for anyone to miss any of the three meals that are provided. As many of you first years probably noticed the Slytherin table did not house the junk food that the other houses did and that is because you will eat a healthy and balanced meal." Severus explained. His eyes rested on Harry for a moment noticing the boy was rubbing his side figuring Draco had once again elbowed him to gain his attention.
"Tomorrow morning all first years will gather after breakfast to be escorted to the Medical Wing where you will each be given a thorough check up from Madam Pomphrey. This is not something that will be negotiated. The following day will be second years and so forth. Do not think you can pull anything over my eyes as these reports will be given to me directly." He continued, noticing two of the first years seemed to flinch. He couldn't help but frown when he realized that one of them was his own son. He shook his head slightly, hoping he had been imagining it. He stepped closer to the first years, feeling a slight pull in his chest as he thought about the one-year old baby that he had held in his arms. Several of the students glanced at each other as they all sat in silence.
"Professor?" Harry questioned softly, gaining his attention to pull him from his thoughts. Severus quickly cleared his throat, stepping back.
"Another thing I would like to press further on is house unite. I understand Mr. Flint already explained what it is I expect however I want to remind each of you that you will be targeted by your fellow classmates. Many people believe that the house of Slytherin is filled with evil and dark wizards. Many of the teachers will show favoritism towards the other houses and will assign you detentions and take points that will seem unfair. Just know that I have to approve each of these detentions and deduction of points so I will do what I can to make each of you feel comfortable. Stand up for each other out in the hallways, stick together and remember that you are housemates first and foremost. Now perfects if you will escort the first years to their assigned dorms and make sure everyone is in bed before 10 o'clock tonight. Remember unless you have a reason to be out curfew is at 8:30 and lights out at 9. Good night." He stated. He quickly slipped through the doorway that led into his private chambers. The potions professor sank onto the couch as he stared at the photo sitting on one of the tables. Bellatrix was standing the garden of Prince Manor, holding their newborn son with a proud smile on her face. Her hair softly blew in the summer breeze, but her onyx eyes were wide with joy.
"Oh, Bella how I wish you were here." He whispered, resting his head against his hand as he thought about just what he wanted to tell his son.
Harry was silent as he laid in his bed, his blanket drawn up to his chest as he listened to the soft breathes of his two roommates, Draco and Blaise Zabini. He glanced at the small clock that was located on the nightstand beside his bed where his glasses laid. The small clock let him know it was barely after midnight. The small eleven-year-old sighed before he pushed his thick green comforter back, slipping out of bed. He was silent as he slipped back into the common room, listening for any of the older students possibly still being up. The fireplace embers still gave a faint glow, bathing the couches in an orange light. He slipped forward, resting on the floor in front of the couch, drawing his knees up to his chest.
"Could not sleep little one?" A faint hiss questioned, causing him to jump. He quickly looked around, his eyes wide in fear that he had been caught out of bed. Slowly his green eyes rested on the portrait hanging above the fireplace. The old wizard was watching him, a concerned look on his face.
"D-did you say something?" Harry questioned.
"Indeed, I did. Not many ventures down into the common room after lights out in fear of being caught by the Head of House." He stated, an amused glint seeming to appear in his eye. Harry smiled slightly before he adjusted to sit on the couch so he could properly look at the man.
"I just couldn't sleep. It's weird being somewhere without my twin, my sister. She was sorted into Ravenclaw…I mean if what the hat said was true than it's a good fit for her. She's wicked brilliant." Harry explained, a small smile appearing on his face as he thought about the times Zia had managed to get them out of trouble with their teachers over the years. Without her he knew he would have gotten into loads more trouble than he had simply for the fact Dudley enjoyed placing any and all blame strictly on him. He looked back up at the portrait, biting his bottom lip slightly.
"Are you really Salazar Slytherin? If so than why do you only talk to me?" he questioned curiously.
"I am indeed Lord Salazar Slytherin and the reason I speak only to you is because you are the only one that can understand me. I was a parseltongue speaker, something that is passed down in my family line, therefore only a select few hold the gift." He explained. Harry couldn't help but blink, not realizing that he had been speaking another language with the man.
"Does that mean my sister can speak it too?" he questioned, always dreaming of having a language with his sister that just they could understand.
"I don't think she does simply because there is something about you that doesn't seem…normal." The old man commented. Harry flinched backwards like he had been slapped upon hearing that even in the wizarding world he wasn't normal.
Severus was sitting at his desk working on a lesson plan when an alarm went off, informing him that there was a student out of bed. He sighed shaking his head, knowing there was always one who thought themselves above his rules. He grabbed his robe, slipping it back on before he walked through the entrance that connected his quarters to the common room. He faltered when he spotted Harry sitting on the couch for a moment before he moved to step forward. The professor froze in his steps when he heard the familiar hissing noises between his son and the painting above the fireplace. He stood in the shadows as he spoke, knowing Lord Slytherin would know he was there but clearly he hadn't alerted the little boy.
"Harry?" he questioned once the first year had stood up from the couch. He watched as his son froze, clearly not expecting to have gotten caught.
"Why don't you step into my quarters? There is something I wish to speak with you about." Severus stated gesturing to the hallway.
