The Truth Behind The Light
Chapter 4
Recap: Severus sighed shaking his head, knowing there was always one who thought themselves above his rules. He grabbed his robes, slipping it back on before he walked through the entrance that connected his quarters to the common room. He faltered when he spotted Harry sitting on the couch for a moment before he moved to step forward. The professor froze in his steps when he heard the familiar hissing noises between his son and the painting above the fireplace. He stood in the shadows as they spoke, knowing Lord Slytherin would know he was there but clearly he hadn't alerted the little boy.
"Harry?" he questioned once the first year had stood up from the couch. He watched as his son froze, clearly not expecting to have gotten caught.
"What don't you step into my quarters? There is something I wish to speak with you about." Severus stated gesturing to the hallway.
Continued: Harry was silent as he followed his Head of House into his private chambers, keeping his head low as he dreaded the fact it was his first night within the magical castle and he'd already managed to break one of the rules. Severus glanced down at his son as they walked through the short passage, noticing his hunched form, a concerned frown gracing his face for a moment before he quickly steeled his features. He pushed the heavy wooden door open before he allowed Harry to enter in front of him, closing it with a flick of his wand.
"I'm sorry I was out of bed after curfew sir…I just couldn't sleep." Harry explained as he stood in front of the desk with his eyes downcast.
"That is not why I called you in here Harry. It is not uncommon for a first year to venture down into the common room when they are feeling homesick. What I wanted to speak with you about it your Hogwarts' Letter." Severus explained as he opened the top drawer on his desk. Harry flinched slightly as he thought about the letter that he had received that hadn't had his name on it. He barely managed to conceal the growing fear of being sent back to number 4 Privet Drive. He was terrified of the thought of being separated from his sister and being forced to spend nearly ¾ of a year alone with his aunt and uncle.
"I would like to know why your letter, and I'm guessing also your sister's letter, were addressed to Cupboard Under the Stairs." Severus explained, lying the crumpled paper on the desk in front of Harry. He could tell from the child's stance that there was clearly something bothering him, something he was determined to find out.
"Because…because…" Harry muttered, attempting to come of with a believable lie that wouldn't give away just how badly their lives had been for the last 10 years. Severus crossed his arms as he waited for an answer.
"The truth would benefit you far more than whatever lie you are currently thinking of will." He stated, watching as his son jumped as his words.
"Because that had been our room since we were left with our aunt and uncle. They said we were freaks who didn't deserve to have an actual bedroom. Always making sure we knew that they didn't want either of us." Harry finally whispered after several awkward moments of silence. He shifted slightly as he waited for his Head of House to say anything, fearing that he would agree with his aunt and uncle. Severus gritted his teeth, quickly forcing his anger and fury under control at the thought of his son being treated like a common house elf. He took several deep breathes as he debated how to ask his next question, not wanting to send the boy running.
"What do you know about your parents Harry?" he finally questioned after several more moments of neither of them speaking.
"Aunt Petunia said that my father was a drunk and that my mother was a freak just like me. They always told Zia and me that our parents had died in a car accident when we were just babies which was why they got saddled with us." Harry admitted. The potion professor frowned slightly at the horrible things Petunia had told two small children about their parents, basically ridiculing them for giving their lives to protect their children. While he was still furious that his son had been taken from his wife and him, he was grateful that clearly Lily and James had loved him like their own. Lily had loved him enough that her sacrifice had protected Harry from whatever really happened that night. His mind began to wander as he thought about how Zia and Harry had obviously been neglected, his stomach dropping he pondered whether or not his son had been physically abused. He knew he wouldn't been able to get anything else out of the first year Slytherin about his guardians so he would have to wait for the physicals that Poppy would do in the morning.
"Would you like some hot chocolate? That always helped my wife sleep when she was having a bad night." Severus suddenly offered. Harry jerked his head up, staring at the professor in surprise. Several moments ticked by before he slowly nodded, curious what the chocolate beverage would actually taste like since Aunt Petunia had never allowed them to have any when Dudley got some. Severus smiled slightly before he called for his personal house elf, Tilly. The house elf instantly jerked when she felt Harry's magic, recognizing the magic of her young master. Her blue eyes sparkled as she looked back and forth between the child and Master Prince, clearly wanting to release her excitement.
"Tilly I need a glass of hot chocolate and a glass of hot Tea." Severus ordered, quickly attempting to gain her attention before she scared the boy. The house elf popped out of the room to the Hogwarts kitchen, leaving the two alone once again. Harry glanced at him for a moment, watching as he sat at the desk to work on his NEWT level lesson plans while they waited for their drinks. He slowly inched closer to the fireplace, intrigued by the several pictures that lined the mantel. A beautiful young woman stood in front of a large manor dressed in white robes, her black wild hair brushed back out of her face. She was smiling at whoever was taking the picture. The next photo was the same woman standing in what looked like a garden with her hands resting on her rounded belly, her sundress hugging it perfectly. Her black hair was pulled back into a pony tail out of her face but still blowing in the wind. The last photo caused him to smile slightly. The woman was lying in a large bed with a baby wrapped up in a blanket with Professor Snape sitting on the bed beside her.
"That's Mistress Bella and Little Master Hadrian." Tilly commented as she sat the tray holding the two drinks and plate of biscuits down on the table in the center of the room. Harry jumped, spinning around faster than he'd meant to, cause him to trip over his own feet. Tilly jumped started when he crashed to the ground, quickly running to his side.
"Young master must be careful. Master Prince wouldn't like little Master to get hurt." She stated as she helped him back to his feet. Severus stood in the doorway watching the interaction. Tilly had been the house elf he had planned to give to Hadrian when he was old enough but hadn't gotten the chance. She had always been enthusiastic and did her job to perfection which was part of the reason he allowed her to accompany him to Hogwarts.
"That will be all Tilly." He stated when he noticed the house elf was once again bouncing on her heels in joy and excitement. The female house elf jumped before she quickly bowed and popped out of sight. Harry glanced at the spot she had just occupied before he moved to sit on the couch, taking the hot mug that Severus offered him.
"Sir…if I may ask…why are you being nice to me? I understand you're my…Head of House…but I did break a rule and I would think I would be punished for that." Harry commented before he took a sip of the drink. The sweet liquid burnt his tongue but he enjoyed the taste it left behind.
"I'm not going to assign you a detention or take points just because you were out in the common room. If you had decided to wander the corridors or gone explore like your…father, than we would be having a very different conversation. However, you didn't and you were silent aside from speaking with the portrait. But you still didn't wake any of your housemates up." Severus explained, not failing to notice that his son seemed to expect a punishment because he thought he had broken a rule.
"Why don't you finish your drink and head back to your dorm?" He suggested before he picked up his own mug of tea, disappearing back into his office to finish the lesson plans he had been working on before he retired to bed himself. Harry silently laid curled up on the couch, sipping on the mug of hot chocolate as he watched the woman move around and wave in the photos. He couldn't help but smile at how happy she seemed.
Barely thirty minutes later Tilly popped back into the room to clear the tray of biscuits and mugs. She had barely picked up the tray when she noticed Harry curled up asleep. She smiled slightly before she summoned a blanket, covering the small first year with it.
"Sleep well little Master." She whispered softly before she went to check on Master Prince. He was still leaning over his desk, clearly not realizing just how late it truly was.
"Master Prince I has given little Master Hadrian a blanket for the night. I dare not wake him from where he sleeps on the couch." She stated as she moved around his office, making sure that everything was in the correct spots. Severus glanced up at the house elf, raising an eyebrow as she moved. He knew from the years as Lord Prince that the house elf only attempted to find little things to do when she had something on her mind or wanted to ask a question. He stayed silent as he waited for her to finally voice her thoughts.
"Master Prince…why is little Master Hadrian here? Tilly is overjoyed that little Master is alright but where has he been?" she questioned, turning her large blue eyes to finally look at him.
"That Tilly is something I cannot yet answer. But I hope to have those answers soon." He stated, standing from his desk. He bid the house elf good night before he moved to retire to his room. He glanced at his son, smiling slightly as the sight of the eleven-year-old curled up asleep like he'd personally dreamed of for so many years. The blanket had already managed to fall on the floor in his sleep causing Severus to fix it. As he draped it back over his son he noticed a photo clutched in his small hands. Clearly the little boy had felt the connection with the photo of the three of them the day Hadrian had been born.
"I promise I won't let you go again. Good night Hadrian." He whispered softly.
