The Truth Behind the Light
Chapter 5
Recap: "That Tilly is something I cannot yet answer. But I hope to have those answers soon." He stated, standing from his desk. He bid the house elf good night before he moved to retire to his room. He glanced at his son, smiling slightly as the sight of the eleven-year-old curled up asleep like he'd personally dreamed of for so many years. The blanket had already managed to fall on the floor in his sleep causing Severus to fix it. As he draped it back over his son he noticed a photo clutched in his small hands. Clearly the little boy had felt the connection with the photo of the three of them the day Hadrian had been born.
"I promise I won't let you go again. Good night Hadrian." He whispered softly.
Continuation: Harry slowly opened his eyes as he yawned wide, stretching slightly before he reached up to rub the sleep from his eyes . He blinked several times in confusion as he glanced around, attempting to remember just where he was at.
"I hope you slept well." Severus stated as he stepped into the living room already dressed in his black robes for the day. He couldn't help but smile slightly when he saw Harry look down at the picture frame that was still clutched tightly in his left hand. Severus walked over and knelt in front of the small first year. He took a deep breath, attempting to figure out just how to tell Harry the truth. He didn't want the little boy to run because he didn't believe him, however, he refused to . Harry deserved to know the truth about who he really was.
"I slept well sir. But I think I need to get back to my room before the others wake up and wonder where I disappeared to. I don't want to be late for the first class." Harry whispered.
"The headmaster actually pushed classes back a day since we had such excitement last night.
Severus explained, watching as Harry pushed the blanket off. He yawned before he stretched, not realizing he knocked the picture that had been in his lap on the floor. The eleven-year-old froze when he heard the sound of glass cracking, slowly looking down. He jerked his head up, staring at his head of house with eyes wide in fear.
"I-it was an accident." He explained, the panic in his voice not going unnoticed. Severus quickly waved his wand, wordlessly repairing the picture frame. He grabbed Harry's shoulders as gently as he could in an attempt to regain his attention and calm him down.
"Harry it's alright. I know it was an accident and look I already fixed it." Severus attempted to get through to him. He knew already what Harry's reaction insinuated even though he hoped that he was wrong. His reaction was something that was only triggered after so many years of abuse. The potions master quickly grabbed the photo that his son had felt attached too, easily slipping it into his son's trembling hands. Harry slowly looked down at the photo, half expecting to still see the broken glass. He faltered for a moment when he saw the pristine glass, slowly bringing it close to his chest.
"Why don't you join me for breakfast in here and we talk about what just happened?" Severus questioned. Harry frowned slightly before he shook his head no, feeling the ache of wanting his twin. Severus couldn't help but frown slightly as he watched Harry escape towards the door, waving his hand to unlock it before he got there.
_Ravenclaw Common Room_
Zia frowned slightly as she sat on her bed, listening to her roommates complain about the lessons being pushed back a day to allow the students to settle in. She couldn't help but feel like Professor Dumbledore was going to attempt to do something to her brother to get him placed in a different house. She'd already heard several of her house mates saying obviously he had to be a dark wizard to have defeated He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. She felt her blood boil at the thought of her brother doing anything to harm someone else. He had always been the type of person that stood up for everyone else, even if he was on the receiving end of harm.
"Hey Zia, are you ready to head down to the Great Hall for breakfast?" one of her fellow first years questioned, pulling the curtains around her bed open. She quickly nodded, slipping her shoes on before she walked with her year mates out into the common room where one of the Fifth-Year perfects were clearly waiting for them.
"Alright everyone, remember to stick close to me. Don't want you getting lost before classes have even began." He stated, giving them a kind smile. As they ventured towards the Great Hall Zia couldn't ignore the sickening feeling that had formed in the pit of her stomach, a feeling she normally got when her twin was in trouble. She glanced around, her hazel eyes narrowing as she watched the red-haired boy from the train blocking Harry from entering the Great Hall. She moved to walk over to him, stopping when one of the older students held out their arm, blocking her path.
"Just watch." He whispered, gesturing to the Slytherin table. Several of the older students had already stood up and were making their way towards the doorway. She couldn't help but smile when she saw the determined look on their faces. Zia only watched as they formed a barrier around Harry, Draco standing at his right side.
"Your brother will be okay Potter. One thing you'll learn here is that the Slytherin house protects their own." The perfect stated, carefully steering her towards the Ravenclaw table. She glanced over her shoulder once she'd taken her seat, watching in silence as Harry sat beside Draco, clearly seeing the anger that was still visible on his face.
_Harry_
Harry was silent as he pushed the eggs on his plate around with the fork, his temper visible as he thought about the words Ron had yelled at him. He may have never known his parents but the thought of them being disappointed in him honestly hurt.
"Don't even let that Blood Traitor get to you Harry. He doesn't know what he's talking about." Draco stated as he reached over to grab one of the apples that were offered for breakfast. Harry shrugged slightly before he glanced over his shoulder, his green eyes searching for his sister. Zia offered him a small smile, raising her hand to wave.
"Good morning students. As most of you are already aware that classes have been pushed back for another day. Today I would like all of you to get to know your year mates. Enjoy such a lovely day while the teachers finish up on the plans for this year." Professor Dumbledore stated as he stood from his chair at the Head Table. Severus rolled his eyes slightly before he glanced over at his Slytherins. The only good thing about classes being cancelled for the day meant that he could personally make sure that all of his first through fifth year students attended their health checks. He couldn't help but think about his son's reaction this morning, dreading just what his health check was going to prove. He had half a mind to ask Professor Flitwick to have Zia Potter checked over as well.
"Severus I just wanted to remind you that Harry Potter is not his father. Perhaps you will treat the boy better." Dumbledore stated, giving the Potions Master one of his Grandfatherly looks. Severus glared at the old wizard as he thought about the fact that clearly the Headmaster had something to do with his son's disappearance considering he had attempted to obliviate him, far more than the fact that he thought Bella would be a danger to Hadrian.
"If the child does prove to not be a dunderhead like his father than perhaps he will manage to excel both in my house and in my class. However, he isn't going to get extremely far if he acts before he thinks." Severus sneered before he stood up from the table. He glanced at his 7th year perfects, knowing they would lead the first and second years to the hospital wing once breakfast was over. He was walking through the empty halls, enjoying the silence when he heard the sound of a student running. A smirk scowl appeared on his face as he turned to reprimand whatever student thought themselves above the rules. His anger faltered for a moment when he saw Zia Potter, the child that looked so much like his childhood best friend, the same woman that had clearly taken care of Hadrian.
"5 points from Ravenclaw for running in the hallways Miss Potter." Severus stated as he crossed his arms, glaring down at the child.
"I apologize professor. I just wanted to let you know what happened before breakfast sir. Several of the first year Gryffindors were picking on him this morning and I just wanted to make sure he was alright. However, when I went to walk over to the Slytherin table once I had finished my breakfast he was already gone. I thought perhaps you had seen him." She stated, her hazel eyes shining with obvious worry. Before Severus could respond he noticed one of the castle ghosts floating towards them, recognizing the Blood Baron.
"He should be in the Hospital Wing with my other first years that have already left the Great Hall. He is perfectly fine and will be allowed out onto the grounds after Madam Pomphrey is finished with her exam." Severus explained before he moved to step around the first year Ravenclaw. Zia frowned slightly at the obvious dismissal from the Potions Professor. Severus stood in front of the Slytherin House Ghost with his arms crossed.
"Peeves reported that he saw the Cat Professor taking the Potter boy towards the Headmaster's office. Little Slytherin didn't seem to happy." The Bloody Baron commented, hovering in front of the Slytherin Head of House. Severus sneered for a moment before he quickly took off in the direction of the Headmaster's office. His mind racing as he worried for his son being alone with the single man that could easily take him away all over again. Zia frowned slightly from where she was hiding out of view, her mind wondering why Professor Snape would worry about Harry being with the Headmaster. Her mind began to wander deep in thought.
_Headmaster's Office_
Harry frowned slightly in annoyance as he stood in front Headmaster Dumbledore's desk, his arms crossed as he attempted to show no fear. He knew he hadn't done anything wrong outside of accidently breaking the picture in Professor Snape's quarters that morning. Professor McGonagall stood close to the door, clearly unsure as to why she had been asked to stay during the meeting inside of having his Head of House attend.
"Harry, my boy, I'm sure you know who I am but let me introduce myself. I am Professor Albus Dumbledore. I knew your parents and I must say you look so much like your father, James." Dumbledore stated with a twinkle in his eyes.
"If I may sir, why am I here sir?" Harry questioned.
"Yes, straight to the point I see. Well my boy, the sorting hat felt like it had placed you in the wrong house. I've decided that with Professor McGonagall's permission we are going to resort you into Gryffindor. I'm sure you'd much rather be with your friend Mister Ronald Weasley." Dumbledore stated. Harry frowned slightly as he thought about Draco and Blaise. Both had been very welcoming to him during the train ride to Hogwarts and helped him in the common rooms the night before.
"Sir I don't want to change houses. I like Slytherin and I already made a couple friends there." Harry objected. Dumbledore frowned for a moment before he quickly fixed the smile back on his face.
"I'm sure that's true my boy but…" The headmaster was quickly cut off by the door being forced open. Severus stood in the entrance way, fury clearly apparent in his magic.
"Albus how dare you?! You can't just force a student to change houses even if that blasted hat decides differently!" Severus snapped, glaring at the Headmaster. Dumbledore raised an eyebrow as he watched his spy, easily guessing that the obliviate he had placed on his mind concerning the boy hadn't worked.
"Severus this matter doesn't concern you. Why don't you tend to your little First Year students? I'm sure several of them are nervous about their exams." He suggested.
"Well Headmaster it does concern me. Because that particular student is one of my first years. So, unless he physically tells me himself that he wishes to be moved into the Gryffindor house than both of us will be taking out leave. However, I will warn you that whatever he decides if you continue to push the matter I will NOT hesitate to bring it before the Board of Governors." Severus threatened. Harry watched his Head of House, surprised that the decision was being left up to him. He turned his attention from Professor McGonagall to the Headmaster, silently attempting to decide. While the Gryffindor Head of House seemed like a nice enough professor, he really like the safety and comfort Professor Snape offered him.
"I'd…I'd like to stay in the Slytherin House please Professor." He finally whispered after several minutes of agonizing silence. Dumbledore frowned as he glared at his Potions Professor for a brief moment before he forced his smile once again.
"Of course, my boy. I wouldn't dream of forcing you to do something you weren't comfortable with. Why don't you go with Professor Snape?" he offered. Severus silently placed his hand on the center of Harry's back, leading him out of the large office.
_After Curfew_
Severus paced his office back and forth, barely controlling his anger as he thought about the results Madam Pomphrey had given him after Harry's exam. The boy had clearly been abused his entire life and Dumbledore had either not known or simply ignored it, but he was leaning more towards the old fool didn't care. Harry was his supposed precious savior and he would want the boy to be dependent on him. His heart ached at the thought of his son and Miss Potter living with whatever blasted muggles the Headmaster had placed them with, clearly not caring for the two eleven-year-olds' basic needs. The potions master had barely grabbed a small handful of Floo powder, intending to go to Malfoy manor to speak with his brother-in-law when he heard the soft knock on the portrait that covered the entrance to his private quarters.
"Who would be out this late?" he muttered, walking through the sitting room to the entrance. He had barely pushed the portrait open when a student brushed past him. Severus couldn't help but frown as he raised an eyebrow watching as Zia walking into the room without any prompting.
"Miss Potter as it is after curfew I must ask why you are out of your common room? And how you managed to find the entrance to my quarters in the dungeons? Ten points from Ravenclaw for breaking the rules. Depending on just why you are in my quarters I mind take more points." Severus questioned, crossing his arms. Zia pulled a book out from under her arm, opening it to a specific page.
"I've been thinking about Harry's letter since he received it. It said Hadrian Snape and in the few weeks we've known about magic I understand that the book of Students doesn't make mistakes. I've also been reading because I was curious about us being twins and the more I read the more I realized we are twins in an aspect. We were born on the same day which is why we have some of the twin gifts from Mother Magic, but we aren't twins like the Weasley twins are." Zia commented. She glanced at her Professor with a sigh, contemplating how to say her next words. Severus stood in the center of the room, frozen in shock. He could clearly see just why the girl had been placed in Ravenclaw.
"Harry's name is Hadrian Snape which would mean…he's your son isn't he?" she questioned. Severus sighed before he uncrossed his arms moving to sit at his desk.
"Yes, Harry is my son. I haven't told him yet and I must ask that you not tell him either Miss Potter." He stated.
"Why was Harry placed with Aunt Petunia? Why wasn't he with you and his mother? We've always…always been told that no one would want us and if Harry finds out that you've been alive this entire time and never once came to get him..." she stated, trailing off. Severus sneered at the name of Lily's sister, remembering just how hateful and mean she had been when they were children.
"I didn't know he was still…alive until I was sent by the Headmaster to take the two of you to Diagon Alley. I promise I am going to fix this Miss Potter, but I need time. There are bigger things going on right now that I have to be careful. Now why don't you head back to your common room? If any perfects or teachers catch you send them to me." Severus stated.
Once the first year had left he reached, picking up a photo of Bella, wishing she were there to give him advice on what to do.
