The Truth Behind the Light

Chapter 6

Recap: "Harry's name is Hadrian Snape which would mean…he's your son isn't he?" she questioned. Severus sighed before he uncrossed his arms moving to sit at his desk.

"Yes, Harry is my son. I haven't told him yet and I must ask that you not tell him either Miss Potter." He stated.

"Why was Harry placed with Aunt Petunia? Why wasn't he with you and his mother? We've always…always been told that no one would want us and if Harry finds out that you've been alive this entire time and never once came to get him..." she stated, trailing off. Severus sneered at the name of Lily's sister, remembering just how hateful and mean she had been when they were children.

"I didn't know he was still…alive until I was sent by the Headmaster to take the two of you to Diagon Alley. I promise I am going to fix this Miss Potter, but I need time. There are bigger things going on right now that I have to be careful. Now why don't you head back to your common room? If any perfects or teachers catch you send them to me." Severus stated.

Once the first year had left he reached, picking up a photo of Bella, wishing she were there to give him advice on what to do.

Continued: For several weeks Severus attempted to keep a close eye on his son, attempting to figure out when would be the best time to finally tell him the truth. The fury he had felt at his son's medical scans was still fresh on his mind, but Dumbledore had refused to listen to him when he'd brought the results to him. He'd received the same response that Madam Pomfrey had messed up the scans, that Harry was treated like a prince by his relatives, that he wasn't in any danger living with them.

The Potions Master was silent as he stood in the back of his classroom, watching as the First Year Gryffindors and Slytherins worked on the potions. He noticed Draco kept glancing at where Harry and Ron were working together. The youngest Weasley boy hadn't worked with Harry since the start of school and he had been one of the leading bullies that had been calling his son the next Dark Lord. Draco glanced over his shoulder at his uncle for a moment before he glanced back over at his cousin. He was the first to notice the crestfallen look that flashed across Harry's face.

"Is there a problem here?" Severus questioned, moving to stand behind the two boys. Harry glanced up at his head of house for a moment, quickly shaking his head.

"No sir." He stated, glancing back at their potion. Severus sneered at the red-haired Gryffindor that still stared at him.

"Just attempting to make friends sir." Ron stated, ignoring their potion, insisting on testing his professor's patience. Severus could clearly see just how little attention the Weasley was paying to his potion.

"Ten points from Gryffindor for the clear disrespect." Severus stated before he continued to walk around his classroom, checking where everyone else was at with their own potions. It frustrated him to see that most of the 1st years weren't taking the class serious, already having taken several points and assigned multiple detentions to the Lions.

"Professor!" Draco's voiced cut through his thoughts, causing him to jerk back around to face the students. His eyes narrowed in on Weasley as he sank below the table with his eyes wide. His cauldron was bubbling a dangerous, venomous green color. The potion's master quickly raised his wand, banishing the botched-up potion before it could explode on anyone. Harry slowly poked his head above the desk, looking up at his head of house.

"What happened?" Severus demanded, crossing his arms in annoyance. He knew that Harry had been working on the potion by himself for most of the class and it had turned out well. He glanced at Ron for a moment before turning his attention back to his professor.

"It was my fault sir. I didn't follow instructions and added one of the ingredients wrong." Harry stated, taking the blame even though Severus could clearly see the smug look on his partner's face.

"Stay after class Mister…Potter." Severus stated, ignoring the objections from several of his Slytherins that had taken a protective stance over their fellow 1st year. He turned and walked back towards his desk, wandlessly casting a Tempus charm.

"Alright I want you all to bottle your potions and place the vials on my desk for me to grade. Though it doesn't look like very many of you managed to complete this assignment successfully. Class is dismissed." He stated, sitting at his desk. He watched as Harry made no move to get up from his desk or exit the classroom. The 1st year Slytherin looked terrified as he waited for his Professor and Head of House to speak with him about his botched potion. Once the last student had placed their vial on his desk he stood and made his way over to Harry. He leaned against the desk in front of him, crossing his arms as he waited for an explanation.

"So, what exactly happened with your potion? When I originally checked on you everything was going fine, and it seemed like you had one of the better potions in the class. I turn my back and suddenly you forget how to properly add an ingredient? That doesn't seem like you at all." Severus stated. Harry looked down at his hands, biting his lip. He knew that he hadn't added the extra ingredient, but he really didn't want to get his partner into trouble. Ron hadn't been paying any attention, instead ranting about the loss of points and how getting a detention wasn't fair. He'd tried to ignore his partner and had turned away to reread the last bit of instructions when Ron had simply tossed in the Porcupine Quills.

"Look at me when I am speaking Harry. I just want to know what happened. If I hadn't acted fast enough that potion could have seriously harmed you and your classmates." Severus continued. Harry looked up at him with his green eyes wet with tears. He really didn't want to disappoint his Head of House, but he also didn't want the entire Gryffindor House to start anymore rumors about him. Severus sighed before he knelt down to Harry's level, brushing the First Year's hair out of his face.

"I didn't mean to. I promise I didn't mean to. I just turned my back for a minute to look at the instructions on the board." He suddenly admitted, tears starting to drip down his chin. Severus sighed before he shook his head, using his thumb to brush them away. Harry sniffled, reaching his arm up to rub his eyes with his sleeve.

"We will continue this conversation later. Come to my office straight after dinner. I will inform your other teachers that I gave you a detention, so they won't think anything of it. Now get to lunch." Severus stated. Harry quickly nodded before he escaped from the room, leaving the Potion's professor to look at the empty station. He sighed, shaking his head before he waved his wand, vanishing the caldron to the sink in the back for the Weasley's detention. His mind began to wander as he cleaned the potion areas for his last class after lunch. He had already spoken to Marvolo and Lucius about trying to get it approved to take the Potter Twins to his house on Spinner's Edge. He knew that it would be a little bit more hassle to get it approved by Headmaster Dumbledore but perhaps he could convince the man that he wanted to give them extra lessons to understand their world away from the other Muggle Born students that stayed during the Holidays.

"Severus can I speak with you for a moment?" a female voice questioned, catching his attention from where he was leaning over his desk. Madam Pomfrey stood in the doorway, her arms crossed in clear annoyance at something or someone. He knew that she needed to speak with him about one of his snakes, since if she needed a potion she would normally just send her Patronus.

"Poppy what is it I can do for you?" he questioned, putting his wand back in the holster attached to his left arm after he'd placed the graded assignments in the appropriate folders stored in his private study.

"I just wanted to see if you had gotten the chance to speak with the Headmaster about the Potter Twins? I've already attempted multiple times, but he keeps dismissing me, saying that everything was being handled. I thought maybe you'd gotten to him before I did." She stated, stepping into the classroom, closing the door behind her to activate the wards that prevented any eavesdropping. Severus scowled before he nodded, remembering how the Headmaster had simply told him that everything was being handled and that he had nothing to worry about. He had been furious at the thought of muggles abusing his son and Lily's daughter. While her parents had been traitors that didn't mean the child should be punished.

"I went to him with my concerns and got the same response that you did. Can't you override the Headmaster and take it to the Ministry yourself? You took an oath to protect all students so can't you do something?" Severus questioned, crossing his arms.

"I wish I could, but my hands are tied. I'm to report any abuse cases straight to the Headmaster because of my contract with Hogwarts. I can't go any further than the Headmaster since it is his duty to take the necessary steps to remove and protect the students involved." She explained, anger clearly brimming in her eyes as she thought about the previous cases she had reported that she hadn't seen anything done. Severus simply nodded, shaking his head. He was thankful he had been able to keep his anger in check because he could bury them deep.

"I should get back to the Medical Wing before a student ventures in and decides to try and heal themselves." She commented, leaving the Potions Master standing in the center of his room alone. He groaned, dragging his fingers through his hair in frustration as he thought about how severe the case of malnutrition both Zia and Harry had suffered from were.

During Detention

Ron Weasley and Harry Potter

With Severus Snape

Harry was silent as he stepped into the Potions classroom, glancing around for his Head of House. Ron Weasley was already leaning over the sink scrubbing away at the caldrons that had been placed there after the classes for the day. Harry could clearly see the water that had been spilt in Ron's attempts. The First Year Gryffindor glanced over his shoulder when Harry stepped into the room, a sneer evident on his face.

"Snape's speaking with Headmaster Dumbledore in his office right now. Get over here and help me. It's your fault I even got a detention in the first-place snake." Ron snapped. Harry shook his head sighing before he walked over and moved to grab the towel that was supposed to be used for drying. He frowned in confusion when Ron suddenly jerked it out of his hand, shoving the sponge brush at him.

"I'll dry." He stated with a smirk. Harry grabbed the sponge before he shoved his hands into the water, frowning when he realized that Weasley hadn't even gotten it nearly hot enough to properly clean the caldrons.

"Mr. Weasley I believe I told you to wash the caldrons by hand, not Mr. Potter. You are serving detention for the blatant disrespect you have shown me during class. You are going to wash and dry every single one of those caldrons by hand by yourself." Severus stated, stepping out of his office with Professor Dumbledore behind him. Harry frowned slightly when he saw the look that the Headmaster was giving him, the stare making him uncomfortable.

"Mr. Potter what are you doing here?" Professor Dumbledore questioned.

"He has detention with me for the disaster he caused during class this morning. Now if you will excuse me sir, I do need to assign him his punishment and make sure Mr. Weasley continues his." Severus stated, determined to get the meddling old man to leave. Dumbledore glanced at his spy for a moment, briefly searching his mind for any sign of Severus remembering the truth about Harry's heritage. Severus glared at the old man, shutting down his shields.

"Have a nice night Professor Dumbledore." He snapped, jerking open the door as a hint that he wanted him to leave. Harry moved to stand beside the desk as Professor Snape continued to tear into Ron for his temper.

"Mr. Potter if you would please follow me, you are going to be helping me in the lab for your detention." Severus stated. He held open the door the led into his private labs where he conducted his personal potions for both the Medical wing and his private stash. Harry slipped into the room in front of him, moving to stand against the wall furthest from the potion that Professor Snape was currently brewing. He frowned in confusion when his head of House gestured to the stool that was in front of the table.

"Harry there is something that the two of us need to talk about, something important." Severus explained once his son had taken a seat. He hated the terrified look that crossed his normally calm features, resting his hand on his shoulder as a sign of comfort.

"Harry…do you remember the pictures that were in my private office? The ones that I said were of my wife and son?" Severus questioned, looking down at the small boy.

"Yes sir. And I still am really sorry that I broke it. Are you still upset with me for it?" Harry questioned, shifting slightly. Severus couldn't help but chuckle, shaking his head no. He turned back to his potion, raising his wand to summon the potion vials he needed. Harry carefully took the small crate he was handed, looking down at the empty vials in confusion.

"We are going to talk like I said we would but you're going to stay busy, so you'll actually listen to what I have to say without interrupting or attempting to run." Severus explained. Harry silently nodded before he grabbed the filled vial that he was being handed, putting the stopper in before replacing it in the crate on the table to his right. Severus was silent for several minutes as they worked, sorting his thoughts as he debated on how to start the conversation to tell his son the truth about his heritage. He finally sighed, deciding to just come straight out with it instead of beating around the bush.

"Harry what I want to talk to you about is your parents. I know you've grown up thinking that Lily and James Potter were your biological parents and that Zia was your twin. Well…in a sense Zia is your twin. The two of you were born on the same day but to two different sets of parents. Zia's parents are Lily and James, however, yours…yours are…my wife and me." He explained, glancing up from his potion for a moment. Harry stood frozen, his fingers barely holding the vial. The first year stood a step back, his legs nearly giving out from under him. He shook his head, his green eyes once again filling with tears. Severus waved his wand to replace the vials back on the furthest shelf before he knelt in front of Harry.

"If…if…if you're my dad than why did you leave me with Aunt Petunia? Why did you and my mom abandon me there instead of taking me home? Did you not want me?" He asked, looking at his father. Severus sighed before he reached out, wrapping his arms tight around his son, trying to take the pain and doubt away.

"We didn't abandon you Harry. You were taken from us during the war and placed with the Potters. I didn't know you were still alive until I came to the Dursleys to take you and your sister to Diagon Alley to get your school supplies. Your letter said Hadrian Snape remember? I have wanted to tell you since the beginning of the school year but there are…others who are working against me." Severus explained, pulling back just enough to see his son's face. Harry searched his face for any signs that he was lying, that he was simply dreaming. Severus offered him one of his rare smiles before he pulled back and moved to continue bottling the potion. He let Harry sit on the stool simply watching him instead of making the 1st year help.

After several long moments he finally climbed down and moved to stand back beside his father's side, carefully grabbing one of the vials that had been set to the side to be stopped. Severus couldn't help the small smirk that graced his face as he thought about how many times he had wished for this very moment with his son during the past 11 years. His mind wandered to Bellatrix, wondering just what her reaction would be once she finally learned the truth. She had been distraught when they had discovered the body of the baby they had thought was their son. While he had been able to keep her grounded, she had grown angered when they had thought the Potters had turned on their side. She blamed them for the death and had been one of the few that had wanted to make them pay without learning just what had happened. When he had lost her during the trials he had felt like his heart was crushed all over again.

They both ended up working together in silence for several hours, only being pulled from their thoughts when there was a knock on the door. Severus quickly cast the tempus charm, realizing just how late it had gotten and assumed that it was Mr. Weasley asking to return to his dorm.

"Why don't you carry those over to the shelf with the others and I'll walk you back to the Slytherin dorms?" Severus requested before he walked over and pulled the door open. He scowled down at the 1st year Gryffindor for a moment before he glanced over at the sink. Several caldrons were still piled on the floor making him wonder just how little work the boy had put into it.

"Since you didn't finish tonight you will return tomorrow for another detention. Now get out." Severus sneered, watching as the boy stormed out of the room. Harry couldn't help but laugh slightly as he thought about how annoyed his fellow year mate was since he didn't like their Potion's professor. He glanced at his head of house, smiling slightly as he thought about how close his dad was if he needed him.

"You ready to turn in for the night?" Professor Snape questioned, glancing at his son. He frowned concerned when he noticed the crestfallen look that appeared on his face for a moment.

"Can…can I maybe stay in your quarters for the night? I really don't mind sleeping on the couch again." Harry questioned, glancing up at him nervous.

"Not tonight just because there are some things I need to handle. But those things can wait if you want to just sit with a mug of Tilly's hot cocoa and talk for a bit before curfew?" Severus offered. Harry quickly nodded, smiling bright before he walked beside his father deeper into the dungeons.
