The Truth Behind the Light
Chapter 7
Recap:"If…if…if you're my dad than why did you leave me with Aunt Petunia? Why did you and my mom abandon me there instead of taking me home? Did you not want me?" He asked, looking at his father. Severus sighed before he reached out, wrapping his arms tight around his son, trying to take the pain and doubt away.
"We didn't abandon you Harry. You were taken from us during the war and placed with the Potters. I didn't know you were still alive until I came to the Dursleys to take you and your sister to Diagon Alley to get your school supplies. Your letter said Hadrian Snape remember? I have wanted to tell you since the beginning of the school year but there are…others who are working against me." Severus explained, pulling back just enough to see his son's face. Harry searched his face for any signs that he was lying, that he was simply dreaming. Severus offered him one of his rare smiles before he pulled back and moved to continue bottling the potion. He let Harry sit on the stool simply watching him instead of making the 1st year help.
After several long moments he finally climbed down and moved to stand back beside his father's side, carefully grabbing one of the vials that had been set to the side to be stopped. Severus couldn't help the small smirk that graced his face as he thought about how many times he had wished for this very moment with his son during the past 11 years. His mind wandered to Bellatrix, wondering just what her reaction would be once she finally learned the truth. She had been distraught when they had discovered the body of the baby they had thought was their son. While he had been able to keep her grounded, she had grown angered when they had thought the Potters had turned on their side. She blamed them for the death and had been one of the few that had wanted to make them pay without learning just what had happened. When he had lost her during the trials he had felt like his heart was crushed all over again.
They both ended up working together in silence for several hours, only being pulled from their thoughts when there was a knock on the door. Severus quickly cast the tempus charm, realizing just how late it had gotten and assumed that it was Mr. Weasley asking to return to his dorm.
"Why don't you carry those over to the shelf with the others and I'll walk you back to the Slytherin dorms?" Severus requested before he walked over and pulled the door open. He scowled down at the 1st year Gryffindor for a moment before he glanced over at the sink. Several caldrons were still piled on the floor making him wonder just how little work the boy had put into it.
"Since you didn't finish tonight you will return tomorrow for another detention. Now get out." Severus sneered, watching as the boy stormed out of the room. Harry couldn't help but laugh slightly as he thought about how annoyed his fellow year mate was since he didn't like their Potion's professor. He glanced at his head of house, smiling slightly as he thought about how close his dad was if he needed him.
"You ready to turn in for the night?" Professor Snape questioned, glancing at his son. He frowned concerned when he noticed the crestfallen look that appeared on his face for a moment.
"Can…can I maybe stay in your quarters for the night? I really don't mind sleeping on the couch again." Harry questioned, glancing up at him nervous.
"Not tonight just because there are some things I need to handle. But those things can wait if you want to just sit with a mug of Tilly's hot cocoa and talk for a bit before curfew?" Severus offered. Harry quickly nodded, smiling bright before he walked beside his father deeper into the dungeons.
Continuation: Severus crossed his arms as he leaned back against the wall, watching his son work on his homework with several of the other first year students. He glanced around the Slytherin common room, watching as many of the older students moved around helping with homework or answering any questions about the practical work. Since Harry had learned the truth he spent most of his time either in the common room or in Severus' own personal quarters. There were several times he had found his son curled up on the couch asleep, holding the photo that had been taken just after his birth, clearly attempting to fill the void of wanting his mother. His son's laugh pulled him from his thoughts, smiling slightly when he saw the steam that escaped Draco's ears after he'd ate one of the candies Narcissa had sent for the cousins. He knew his sister-in-law had been rejoiced when they had learned that Hadrian was still alive, knowing she had always felt the overwhelming guilt the most during the last eleven years.
"Professor Snape? Is there something you were needing sir?" his seventh-year perfect questioned, finally noticing his presence against the wall closest to the entrance. Harry glanced up from his open book, smiling brightly when he spotted his father. Draco glanced at his uncle for a moment before he turned his attention back to his transfiguration homework. Severus discreetly jerked his head towards the door to his office, knowing his son would understand just what he was needing. Once he was sure Harry had seen him he walked back into his office, deciding to grade some of the students essays while he waited for his son. Harry excused himself from the table, standing up once he'd pushed his books back into his bag before he walked towards the entrance that led to his dad's private rooms.
"You wanted to see me sir?" Harry questioned softly as he stepped into the office. He pulled out the chair that had quickly become his favorite, watching his dad continue to look over the parchments scattered across his desk. Severus glanced up with a small smile before he raised his wand, wordlessly summoning a small leather pouch he had asked Tilly to retrieve from the Prince Manor during his morning classes. He tossed it to his son who effortlessly caught it, carefully pulling the leather cords to open it. Inside was a silver pendant that hung from a leather cord that took the shape of a raven with a crown on its head. He carefully took the silver pendant, mesmerized by the onyx gems that created the eyes.
"That necklace was a gift from your godmother the morning of your naming ceremony. She is a master at runes and managed to engrave several that would protect you from danger into the metal. Do you remember when I told you that there were others that would try to stop me from telling you the truth about your heritage and our family?" Severus questioned, standing from his desk. Harry slowly nodded as he watched his father walk towards him, knowing that was something that had been rotating through his brain for nearly the entire month he had known the truth. However, it was nearly the middle of November and he hadn't ran into any trouble with any other students or any of the professors. Severus carefully took the necklace from his son's small hands, raising it to put it around his neck.
"Well this prevents anyone from entering your thoughts or searching through your memories. It also throws off any spell that will attempt to erase your memories and protects you from most jinx and some harmful charms. I want you to promise me that you will always wear this." The Potion master requested. Harry carefully wrapped his hand around the pendant, feeling the warmth that he seemed to receive in response, a feeling that made him feel protected. He quickly, his green eyes wide as he stared at his father. Severus sighed, reaching forward to pull his son into his arms, resting his chin on the top of his head.
"Has the headmaster or deputy headmistress approved me and Zia leaving Hogwarts for Christmas break?" Harry finally questioned after several long but comfortable silent moments.
"I actually have that response on my desk if you would like to open it." Severus responded, pulling back just enough to glance down at his son. Harry quickly nodded, bouncing on the balls of his toes as he watched his father search his desk for the ivory colored envelope that would hold Professor McGonagall's response as to whether or not he could leave the castle for Yule. He held his breath as he took it, quickly retreating into the sitting room where Tilly was tending to the fire. The energetic house elf stood up when he entered, bowing to her little master.
"Would Little Master Prince like a mug of hot chocolate before afternoon classes?" She questioned.
"Yes, thank you Tilly." He muttered as he stared at the envelope. His stomach felt like it was in knots as he thought about Professor McGonagall denying his request to spend his first Christmas with his father as well as his sister. He glanced over his shoulder at the photos on the mantle, wishing not for the first time, that his mother was there to stand with him. The first year Slytherin slowly stood up, walking over to the mantle to pull the familiar photo down. With the silver frame clutched tightly in his hands, he retreated back to the couch. Severus stood in the doorway watching as his son took a deep breath, clearly expecting the worst before he finally tore the ivory envelope open. His own hands were balled into fists as he waited for the response. He knew that Minerva could be fair when she needed to be, but she was just as protective of the 'Potter Twins' as Dumbledore so he was worried that she would think that staying within the wards of Hogwarts would be better for them.
"Professor McGonagall approved it. I get to go home with you for my first Yule." Harry finally yelled, jumping off the couch once he'd finished reading over the parchment. Tilly quickly snapped her fingers together to prevent the silver picture frame from crashing onto the ground. Severus gasped when his son suddenly flung himself into his arms, quickly catching the small child with a laugh.
"I get to spend my first yule with you." Harry whispered as he rested his head against his father's shoulder, tears filling his green eyes. Severus missed his son's charcoal grey eyes, but he did understand until they could figure out to fool the headmaster they wouldn't be able to undo the glamours that were still in place. He watched as Harry ran out of the portrait hole, the parchment still held tightly in his grasp. Severus chuckled before he shook his head, walking back towards his desk.
The Library
Harry slipped into the library, heading straight for the back corner were Zia and a couple of her friends had taken to studying. He smiled when he spotted the familiar head of red hair leaning over a stack of books. She was sitting with two other students clearly attempting to work on one of their homework assignments. He had barely taken a step towards their table when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
"My boy, I figured I would find you in here this late in the afternoon. Your friend Mr. Weasley said that you usually used this time to spend with your sister. But I was hoping I could steal you away for just a moment. There was something I was hoping to speak with you about." Professor Dumbledore stated, looking down at the first year Slytherin. Harry glanced around, hoping to spot one of the sculpted snakes that had taken to following him after he had talked to Salazar Slytherin. Harry quickly shoved the parchment in his robe pocket as Professor Dumbledore steered him out of the library. He took a deep breath in an attempt to calm his heart rate, feeling the warmth that pulsed from the pendant around his neck.
"May I ask what this is about Professor?" Harry questioned as they walked through the hallways to where he assumed was the Headmaster's office. The silence he received in response was deafening as he was pulled along. Finally, he spotted one of the snakes hanging out in one of the moving portraits beside the moving staircase. His heart thumped hard against his chest as he watched it start to move through the other portraits along the wall. After several long moments they arrived in front of two large gargoyles.
"Lemon Drops." Dumbledore stated briefly glancing down at the first year Slytherin.
"Sir I really must insist that we wait for my head of house since I am not comfortable around you since the…incident at the beginning of the year." Harry stated, attempting to stand his around as the Headmaster began to pull him up the steps that led into his office.
"There is no need to wait, I'm here." Severus stated, stepping into view. He crossed his arms as he glanced down at his son, thankful that he'd assigned one of the sixth year Slytherins to watch him. Harry gave him a sheepish look to which he raised an eyebrow. He noticed the crestfallen look that appeared on the Headmaster's face for a brief moment before the twinkle returned to his eye.
"I was just asking Harry here how his classes were going? I've had a couple of his other professors express their…concerns that Mr. Potter has only been spending time with other first year Slytherins." Dumbledore commented. Severus took a deep breath before he placed his hand on his son's shoulder.
"Unless you are pulling every student that only wishes to spend time with their house we are leaving." He stated with his normal sneer, steering Harry towards the door. As they walked out he stopped, glancing over his shoulder.
"And Albus? This is my final warning. If I hear you messing with one of my snakes for no apparent reason aside from harassing them I will be filing a complaint with the Board of Governors." He stated. He inwardly smirked at the furious look he received from the Headmaster before closing the door behind him.
"I promise I didn't go look for trouble. I was going to tell Zia the news and he stopped me in the library." Harry quickly rambled as they walked away from the Headmaster's office. Severus hadn't made a move to remove his hand from his son's shoulder. When his 6th year perfect had informed him that he had seen the Headmaster pulling Harry through the corridors he had instantly abandoned the paperwork he had been going over to get to him before Dumbledore was able to do something that would fracture the growing relationship he had with his son.
"I'm going to drop you off in the library with Zia. One of my perfects will be around when you're done speaking with your…sister. Just let them know and they will escort you back to the Common Room. Remember that it is a Sunday, so you have to be back before dinner to have your homework gone over with one of the older students." Severus explained as they walked. Harry glanced up at his father, clearly seeing the worried look flash across his face.
"I promise I won't be long. I just want to let her know about the plans for Christmas before someone attempts to change her mind about leaving." Harry stated before he stepped back into the library. He quickly made his way over to his twin, sitting down in front of her with a grin. The first year Ravenclaw glanced up for a moment, raising an eyebrow at her brother's expression. Even though they both knew that they were siblings by birth they had both been raised together and had been forced to go through the same hardships, so in their eyes at least they were brother and sister, still twins.
"You'll never guess what Professor Snape managed to do." Harry stated softly, leaning against the table. He glanced down at the charms books she had spread out around her for a moment, intrigued by one of the spells. Zia laughed, shaking her head as she failed to regain her brother's attention. She reached across the table to close the book that he had grabbed from her stack. He looked at her with a blush across his cheeks.
"You were saying your Head of House managed to do something?" she questioned once she'd regain his attention.
"Right, sorry. Anyways, he went to Professor McGonagall and had it approved for us to leave Hogwarts for the break. He's going to take us to Prince Manor. He also said something about a Yule Ball that we would get to attend if we wanted to though I'm not internally sure what that is." Harry rambled, the grin returning to his face. Zia sat back in her chair with a small smile, happy to see just how excited he was about getting to spend time with his father. She had seen the change in his personality since he had discovered the truth about Professor Snape. He wasn't the same quiet boy that latched onto any type of affection or kindness shown to him like he would have done a few months before.
"That's great Harry. But are you sure it's alright for me to go? I know this will be your first Yule with your dad and I don't want to ruin that because I'm not his kid." She questioned softly, pulling at the corner of one of her books.
"Don't be silly Zia. We're a package deal and he knows that. We were raised together even though we weren't born together." Harry stated, grabbing her hands. She looked at him for a moment with an unsure look in her hazel eyes. He stood up and walked around the table, claiming the chair beside her with a smirk.
"I'm your twin, you're my twin. We stick together through thick and thin. No matter what I do, I'm always stuck with you. And if trouble comes our way, I know my twin will save the day. Wherever you may be, you're always stuck with me." Harry sang softly, pulling her into a tight hug. Zia couldn't help but smile at the silly old twin song they'd heard from one of Dudley's shows as a kid.
"When you're feeling sad and blue, call my name and I'll find you. We have a bond that's tried and true. You and me, me and you. Two by two." She whispered. She pulled back and smiled at him before she sat back in her chair correctly.
"Now shoo. I have charms homework I need to get finished and you're distracting me." She laughed softly, shaking her head. Harry grinned before he stood from the chair, swiping the charms book that had grabbed his attention. Once he'd checked it out with Madam Pince he walked to the entrance where he knew the Slytherin perfect would be waiting for him. He opened the book as they walked, flipping through some of the pages near the front. His mind began to wander to the charm that had grabbed his attention while it was lying open on the table. It was a charm that was used to change the color or design of someone's outfit, something the caster was able to control. A small smirk appeared on his face as a plan began to form in his head.
Last Day of Term Before Break
Harry smirked from where he was sitting at the end of the Slytherin table, watching the staff entrance into the Great Hall. Severus raised an eyebrow when he caught his son's gaze, knowing he had been planning something since the last time he was pulled into Dumbledore's office.
"Harry what did you do?" Draco suddenly questioned, a laugh escaping as he covered his mouth with his hands. Dumbledore had just stepped into the hall wearing Slytherin green and Hufflepuff yellow robes, two colors that clashed with the man's bright pink beard. Harry smirked before he looked down at his plate, grabbing a piece of toast. The entire Slytherin table managed to keep their masks in place on the outside but instead they were all laughing at the furious look on their Headmaster's face.
"I didn't do anything. However, the Weasley twins were very excited when they stumbled upon a book of joke spells that might have had a few notes on just how to prank." Harry muttered, a smirk on his face.
"Very Slytherin move." Pansy replied with a smirk. They watched as Dumbledore took a seat in his 'throne' watching as he looked at each of the separate house tables. Harry frowned when he noticed the Headmaster's gaze linger on his sister's table for a moment. Zia had already let him know that Dumbledore had been trying to convince her to stay at Hogwarts during the break, but she'd turned him down multiple times. He jerked when Draco suddenly kicked him hard in the shin, jerking his head towards Professor Snape. Harry blushed when he realized his father had been trying to gain his attention. The potions' master raised an eyebrow at his son's face for a moment, a smirk on his face. Harry instantly knew his dad knew he had something to do with the obvious prank on the headmaster.
"Dumbledore I know normally you wear some outrageous things but this? What were you thinking?" McGonagall questioned, looking at his attire.
"My dear I woke up this morning and found that all of my robes had been charmed to change the moment I out them on. I haven't been able to reverse it yet, but it will be remedied before the students return from break I assure you." Dumbledore stated, his normally grandfatherly charmed in affect. Severus took a drink from his goblet in an attempt to hide the smirk that crossed his face. His onyx eyes sought out his son once again, seeing that he had returned to eating his breakfast and speaking with his cousin. Severus was thankful that Draco had been far more accepting that any of them had expected, especially know that fact that his cousin was known to the entire wizarding world as Harry Potter. He'd managed to keep the secret, which was something huge to ask of an eleven-year-old child. He glanced back at the Headmaster when he stood up, clapping his hands together to gain the attention of everyone in the Great Hall.
"Well students it has been a fantastic first term and I look forward to see those leaving us for Christmas return for the new term in January. Be safe and remember that any underaged magic is forbidden outside these walls. If you are taking the Hogwarts Express back to London than please follow Hagrid. However, if you are staying please remember that rules will still be enforced. Have a very Merry Christmas." Dumbledore announced. Harry remained seated at the Slytherin table watching as most of the other students stood from their tables and headed towards the Main entrance. He glanced over his shoulder when Dumbledore brushed passed him, feeling his necklace heat up as a sign of a compulsion charm being cast on him.
"Come on. Uncle Severus is waiting at the staff entrance for us." Draco stated, nudging his cousin to regain his attention. Harry quickly nodded, standing up from the bench. He smiled when he saw Zia was already standing with his dad.
"Harry, Zia I have already taken the liberate of having Tilly arrange for you both to have proper clothes ready in your rooms at Prince Manor so there will be no need to them with you. You are more than welcome to bring anything else along that you want but know that everything you need will already be taken care of." Severus stated as they walked down towards the dungeons. Harry quickly walked beside his father, his stomach bubbling with excitement at the thought of not having to hide that his Head of House was his father. Severus glanced down at him, a small smile gracing his face as he saw the clear joy in his son's green eyes.
When they reached his quarters Zia glanced around, amazing at the warm and welcoming feeling. Harry gave her a grin as Severus moved over to the fireplace.
"Zia, Harry as neither of you have travelled by Floo powder before this time I will go first, and Draco will go last. I want you to very clearly state Malfoy Manor." Severus explained, pulling the clay pot of Floo powder down from the mantle. Zia laughed when she noticed the baby handprints on the pot, figuring they were Harry's since the Potions' master didn't have any other children. Harry shot her a glare, a blush appearing on his cheeks before he followed his father through the fireplace.
When he stepped out into the large and elegant sitting room he stopped, looking around in shock. The room was done in a rich green color with silver wall trimmings. He quickly jumped out of the way when Zia came tumbling out of the fireplace, nearly colliding with him. The young Prince glanced up when he heard his father's laugh. Severus stood in the doorway with Narcissa and Lucius, an amused smirk on his face. Harry blushed when Lady Malfoy suddenly rushed forward and pulled him into her arms.
"I am so happy you are here Harry. We have missed you so much." She whispered.
