The Truth Behind the Light

Chapter 9

Previously: Harry sighed as he sat in one of the chairs, figuring there was a cushioning charm on them considering how comfortable they were. He had a book on old customs and traditions open in his lap. Zia was sitting at one of the tables closest to the fireplace with a book about some wizard charms while Draco sat beside her with his own book. Harry glanced over the top of his book, smiling at how close his sister and cousin had gotten in the short time they'd known each other. He couldn't help but think about that first day on the platform. He'd wondered many times if the Malfoys had already known who he was when they offered their help or had it simply been a coincidence. Draco had stood up for him when the Weasley boy had tried to force his opinions on him. Since he'd been sorted into Slytherin the only thing the youngest Weasley had done was hurl insults about his house.

"I hope you don't mind but Lady Malfoy gave me permission to join the three of you." A soft voice spoke from the doorway, gaining the trios attention. Maddison offered a kind smile before she moved further into the library. Her steps faltered when she caught sight of just how many books covered the shelves.

"I'm sorry I wasn't able to properly meet you when we first arrived." Harry stated, standing up from his seat. He held out his hand, holding his breath as he waited to see if she would take it or not. She simply smiled before she shook his hand.

"Mother and father informed me that you were feeling under the weather. I take it you are feeling better now?" she questioned. He quickly nodded, forgetting his words for a moment as he realized just how beautiful she was. Draco rolled his eyes at his cousin's silence, easily figuring he had no clue how to properly speak to a lady.

Continued: Harry was silent as he sat in the Accounts Managers office that oversaw both the Prince and Potter's accounts. He glanced around the room in silence, his grey eyes wide in amazement. His father was sitting in the chair next to him, dressed once again in black robes, however, these robes were nearly the same style that he had seen bother Lord Malfoy and Lord Slytherin wearing. The Prince crest was proudly shown on the right side, the same symbol that his necklace showed. He reached his hand up to wrap it around the raven necklace that still felt warm against his palm, attempting to reassure himself that there was nothing wrong with him. He hoped that this visit with the goblin healer would just show everything they already knew, not something that was endangering his life.

"Dad…why are we here exactly? Couldn't Madam Pomfrey have done whatever exam you're needing once we got back to Hogwarts?" Harry muttered, leaning back in his chair to look at his father. Severus only sighed, sparing his son a small glance. He'd barely opened his mouth to respond when the door opened, catching both of their attention.

"I am sorry to have kept the both of you waiting. My name is Griphook. Lord Slytherin stated in his letter that you were wanting one of our healers to examine your son. For what reason?" the goblin stated. Harry sat up straight in his chair as the Bank manager took a seat on the other side of the desk.

"Because since Yule began Harry has been getting ill. However, earlier in the year when the school Healer did a full exam there was nothing there that should be causing the issues all the sudden nearly four months after. He is taking daily potions for the malnutrition he has suffered at the hands of his…current guardians. But the symptoms he is having only present themselves after he is around a certain person. You can surely see my worry?" Severus stated, uncrossing his arms. Griphook simply nodded his head, turning his attention to the smaller wizard. Instead of getting the terrified look he was accustomed to all he saw was awe and curiosity.

"Very well. I will take you to one of the chambers where a healer is already waiting. However, the boy will have to change into the clothes that we have provided, and you, Lord Prince, will remain here until we return." Griphook stated. He stood from his chair, ignoring the objection Severus attempted to make. Harry took a deep, shaking breath before he stood up from his own seat, glancing over his shoulder at his father with fear now clearly written across his face. Severus offered him a firm nod before the door was shut between them.

Severus wasn't sure how long he was left waiting for any information on what was wrong with his son. He had taken to pacing the office after what he guessed was almost an hour of silence. His black cloak blew around his frame each time he turned, his mind conjuring different scenarios on just what could be wrong with his son, each one worse than the last. The potions master quickly turned to the door when he heard it click open, his heart skipping a beat when only Griphook stepped back in.

"Where is Hadrian? Where is my son?" He demanded. His sudden outburst only received a look of annoyance from the Magical creature before him. He took several deep breathes, strengthening his shields in an attempt to control himself.

"The child is fine. He is currently sleeping since we removed several blocks both on his mind and his magic. Though you were right to worry about his health. His scar was imbedded with dark magic, magic that held such hate." Griphook explained once he was sure the wizard standing in front of him could handle it. Severus sank down into his chair as he thought about the information that he had just been given. It made no sense that anyone would have ever gotten close enough to Harry to cast any form of dark spell or charm on his person. Most dark magic was forbidden because the people that attempted to use it didn't always understand just what that intitled.

"What kind of dark magic was in his scar?" Severus finally questioned once he'd managed to pull himself from his thoughts. Griphook simply pressed a button on his desk, summoning another smaller goblin that had clearly already been waiting outside the door. He raised his hand, gesturing to Severus for a brief moment.

"There was a type of crystal, tiny thing, that was causing his body physical harm whenever he was around certain people. It was making him ill and more than likely causing a severe headache that no potion would be able to cure. We've removed the crystal, but we want you to bring him back in several months to exam him again to make sure there are no lasting effects." The healer explained. Severus stiffly nodded, feeling his anger rise.

"Also, we discovered there were several…restraints on his magical core. So much that he is lucky he is able to use magic at all. Now since he is only eleven, we think it is best to remove them just a small piece at a time because too much magic so suddenly could cause both him and anyone around him harm." the smaller goblin continued, "Which is why he is currently resting. I would suggest just making sure he takes it easy for the rest of the day."

"He will go home and go straight to bed. Thank you for making the time to see us today." Severus stated, nodding his head in respect. He took several deep breathes as he was led into the room where Harry was already resting. The eleven-year-old was curled up on his side still dressed in the white shirt and pants the Goblins had provided. His black hair fell in his face as he slept, covering the scar that had caused his son so much harm.

"We will owl you a list of potions he will need to take until his magic is back under control for his protection. I assume you would prefer to brew the required items yourself Potions Master Prince?" the goblin healer questioned as he moved to his son's side. He carefully picked the boy up, adjusting his grip. Once he felt Harry move his arms up and latch them around his neck, he gave the healer his attention.

"If that would be alright with you yes. There are many people out there who would see to cause my son harm. If I can prevent even just a small bit of that I will do everything I can." Severus stated with a firm nod.

Once they'd gotten back to Malfoy Manor Severus made his way through the hallways, careful in his strides not to wake his son. Harry had thankfully managed to sleep during the apparition though he had been worried that the sudden jolt of magic and movement would have woken him. The healer had informed him they had given Harry a strong sedative after they had unbound just a tiny bit of his magic. It had caused a massive backlash that many of them worried, both goblin and wizard alike.

"Uncle Severus is Harry alright?" Draco questioned. The youngest Malfoy poked his head through the doorway, his eyes searching the room for Harry. Severus couldn't help but laugh, shaking his head at his nephew's antics, already figuring the Zia wasn't far behind. Since Harry hadn't been at her side during most of their stay the last few days, she had taken to following the Malfoy heir around, asking questions that made it quite obvious that she was in fact a Ravenclaw. His mind began to wonder back to Lily, remembering that she had told him the hat had thought about placing her into Ravenclaw, but had seen greater things should she be placed alongside James in Gryffindor.

"Professor Snape how did your meeting go at Gringotts?" Zia questioned stepping around to stand beside Draco. Severus only chuckled, shaking head before he covered Harry with the thick comforter. The young boy sighed in his sleep, rolling over onto his side.

"Harry is fine. He just needs rest for right now so why don't the three of you go back to the library where I am guessing you have been all day since we left this morning." Severus stated with an amused look on his face. The air beside Zia shimmered for a moment as Maddison released her Notice-Me-Not charm. The young heiress had a bright red blush across her cheeks as she held her hands in front of herself.

"Pardon my intrusions Lord Prince. I was simply curious as to how Heir Prince was doing. I did not wish to disturb either of you so soon after you had returned from your meetings." She stated, hoping to ease a small amount of the embarrassment she was feeling at being caught. She'd been told many times by both her mother and her father that it wasn't very Slytherin to be caught ease dropping. She reached up to brush a strand of blonde hair out of her face before she quickly grabbed Zia's hand, pulling her away from the doorway.

"I have some work to do Draco. Run along and please don't wake up Harry." Severus stated as he walked past his nephew out the door. Draco opened his mouth to object before he thought better of it.

Harry ended up sleeping until it was nearly dinner time, a soft groan escaping his lips as he shifted to roll to his other side. He blinked his eyes open, thankful that one of the house elves had thought to close the curtains around his bed. A frown appeared on his face when he realized there was a small brown parcel sitting beside him. Slowly he pushed himself up into a sitting position, carefully picking the parcel up. The handwriting on the front seemed familiar to him but he couldn't place it. The name read Hadrian Severus Snape which caused him a small moment of confusion since that was his birth name, but everyone called him Prince since that was his legal name. He couldn't help but sigh as he sat in his bed, terrified of opening the package. He knew that obviously it wasn't something that would harm him since somehow it had gotten past the wards on the manor, but he still felt dread seep into his stomach.

"Come on Harry, you can do this." He whispered, finally tearing the top off the package. He took a deep breath, waiting for a moment for anything to happen. When he was met with nothing but silence he reached his hand inside the envelope, pulling out the contents. The first thing that caught his attention was a handwritten note that had the same handwriting as the front of the envelope. He took a deep breath before he opened the letter.

Dear Harry,

I hope this letter doesn't find you but if it does it means that Dumbledore managed to defeat our friend, Lord Marvolo Slytherin, though many call him Lord Voldemort. It means that we weren't able to personally reunite you with your mother and father who James and I both consider two of our greatest friends.

Harry we took you in when you were brought to us and decided to raise you alongside our own daughter Zia. I'm sure you are wondering why we would do that instead of giving you back to your own family. At the time we did it because we were grieving the loss of our own little boy but also because the man that gave you to use convinced us that it was the right thing to do. As I sit here now, writing this, I wonder myself why I didn't at least let your mother know that you were alright. I let my own grief cloud my judgement and instead let your family grieve someone that was safe and loved.

A sudden knock on his bedroom door caught his attention. He quickly shoved the envelope under his pillow as the door was opened, his dad poking his head in. Severus' smile faltered for a moment as he saw his son's sudden movement but brushed it aside as nothing.

"Hey. How are you feeling?" He questioned, stepping fully into the room.

"I'm still tired but I just woke up. What did the doctors say?" Harry muttered, balling his hands into the blankets strung across his lap. He looked down at the green silk blanket, his charcoal eyes darting across his lap as he attempted to remember just what had happened with the other goblins.

"The healers said that you were getting sick because of some strong charms on you. But they removed it and said you will be fine. So, do you want to come join us for dinner?" Severus stated attempting to keep the smile on his face. Harry quickly nodded, pushing the blanket to the side of the bed before he climbed down. Severus opened the door further to let Harry run past him. He glanced around the room, watching as the house elves used their magic to make the bed before he sighed. The potions master turned and walked down the hallway following his son.

"Harry this way." He called to catch his attention, gesturing to a door that was partially open. Harry slowly for a moment as he glanced in the direction of where he thought the dining hallway. Severus couldn't help but chuckle at the confused look on his son's face before he pushed the door open further. He walked over, glancing into the room. He froze when he saw the woman from the pictures in his father's office standing in the center of the room, facing the fireplace. Her hair was curlier and wilder than he would have expected but he knew it was her, his mother. Severus watched as his son, their son, ran towards Bellatrix, nearly sending them both tumbling to the floor when he hugged her from behind. His smaller arms barely wrapped around her waist. The witch froze before she managed to raise her arms enough to look down at the boy.

"And who are you?" she questioned with a curious tone. The potion's master sucked in a deep breath, realizing that perhaps Lord Slytherin hadn't informed his wife of their discovery. He slowly stepped forward, placing his hand on her shoulder to gain her attention. She glanced at him for a moment before she looked down at the boy, her eyes connecting with his.

"Hadrian…" she whispered, her voice failing her as she stared down at the son she'd thought she'd lost.
