Summary: Rose Potter receives a letter.
Rose Potter was a strange girl. This was something that everyone living in Privet Drive knew. The girl was always well dressed and got almost perfect marks at school. She was often seen helping out in the neighbors' gardens. The neighbors loved to have the sweet little girl over. She would even babysit for free. Despite this all the neighbors found her inherently strange. Perhaps it was her dark black hair that seemed to suck the surroundings in even in bright daylight. Or her bright green eyes that stood out against her light brown skin. Or maybe her faded lightening scar that marred the left side of her face.
Little did they know their definition of 'strange' paled in the face of the truth that little Rose would discover on her eleventh birthday.
"Wake Up! Now!" Aunt Petunia rapped against the door.
Rose groaned as she turned in her bed, squinting at the sunlight.
"Yes ma'am" She muttered. Stretching, she stepped out of her room, which was previously Dudley's second bedroom. She had asked her Aunt if it was normal for children to sleep in the cupboard under the stairs when she was five. Aunt Petunia looked horrified and she was moved to the room the very next day.
"You have 5 minutes in the bathroom." said Aunt Petunia, before storming down the stairs. Before she was allowed to go only once a week but the one of the neighbors had commented that Petunia was obviously a very good mother- look how adorable her niece is! Petunia takes good care of her! But aren't those clothes a tad bit too big? After that Petunia had dragged her away to a second hand store and bought her the cheapest clothes available. Along with a sewing kit to fix up anything that may be torn. As long as she kept a good appearance and told the neighbors how kind her relatives were- to take her in, and do some chores, the Dursleys left her alone. They got the fame of taking care of their poor, smart orphan niece. And she got to live there.
Rose brushed her teeth and took a quick shower. She put on black slacks and a purple T-shirt. It was slightly loose so it would probably last a few more months.
She quickly rushed to the kitchen. Aunt Petunia was already flipping the bacon. As soon as she entered, Petunia passed her the spatula and sprouted off orders… "I want everything perfect for Dudley's birthday… bacon… gifts… don't you dare mess up this day for him… "
"I'll get out before they wake up." Rose stated. There was still half an hour before Dudley and Uncle Vernon woke up.
Petunia turned and squinted at her.
"I'll be at the library until the evening." she added.
Petunia nodded, and then reluctantly handed her 2 pieces of bread and some cheese. "Eat this and get out." she ordered.
Rose did so. Not before picking up a rather strange letter from the doorstep as she headed out.
