Summary: Rose reads the letter, pens down a reply, and finds out that owls are very intelligent.
Turning a letter over in her hand a few times she squinted at the seal, it was a purple wax seal- did people even use wax seals these days?
Shrugging, she peered closely, the seal had a coat of arms, a lion, and eagle, a badger and a snake, surrounding a large letter H.
She realized that she may look a bit weird, standing in front of the house, observing the strange letter, so she folded it in half, shoved it in her pocket and ran towards the library.
Only when she slid into her usual spot at the library did she dare remove it and break the seal.
Removing the letter inside it, she started reading…
HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY
Rose grinned triumphantly after reading that, she had always known that magic existed, and that she could do it- how else could the strange things that happened around her be explained? The floating objects, the teleportation or the shrunken sweater that she convinced her aunt happened in the wash?
There was this one time when she was little(er) and stopped a plate falling mid air while doing the dishes, she had quickly reached out and taken it in her hands- but she knew her aunt had seen her do it. That night, she heard her aunt and uncle whispering in their room- something about her parents and magic and someone named "seve-" something and a "freak school".
She was a smart girl, and she connected the dots. Her parents could do magic, and they went to a school of magic. Which meant that she got her magic from her parents and could go to that school as well.
She read further…
Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore
(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. of Wizards)
She wondered what each of the titles meant and how a person could handle these many positions. Was it wise for a man with these many positions to be in charge of a school? Wouldn't he be busy with his other duties?
Dear Ms. Potter,
We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
P lease find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Term begins on 1 September.
We await your owl be no later than 31 July.
She wondered what they meant by an owl, didn't people stop using owls for transportation sometime in the last century? Where would she find an owl to reply with anyway?
Yours sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall
Deputy Headmistress
Sighing, she removed the other list from the envelope, wondering what kind of things would witches and wizards use for studying- and if they taught the normal subjects that she learnt at school as well.
HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY UNIFORM First-year students will require:
Three sets of plain work robes (black) One plain pointed hat (black) for day wear One pair of protective gloves (dragon hide or similar) One winter cloak (black, silver fastenings) Please not that all pupils' clothes should carry name tags.
She wondered how the stereotype of witches in pointy hat in the normal world came to be- was there a time when the two communities intermingled? Did the witch hunts from the stories really happen? And what was 'dragon hide' anyway? Was it like leather or something? Did dragons exist too?
SET BOOKS All students must have a copy of each of the following:
The Standard Book of Spells (Grade 1) by Miranda Goshawk
'So spells and such did exist!' she thought. She normally just wished for stuff to happen with intensity, and it did, so what was the use of spells?
A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot
She squinted at the name- she felt that she had heard it somewhere but she couldn't be sure.
Magical Theory by Adalbert Waffling A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch
'Transfiguration' she whispered the word a few times, it felt foreign on her tongue. So these people had branches of magic- she realized- it was more than just making things float.
One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phyllida Spore
Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger
'Potions' she hummed- that sounded like cooking but like- in huge cauldrons like she had read in her storybooks- these people really were living upto their stereotype weren't they?
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander
The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble
Humming to herself, she turned the page over,
OTHER EQUIPMENT
1 wand
1 cauldron (pewter, standard size 2)
1 set glass or crystal phials
1 telescope
1 set brass scales
Students may also bring an owl OR a cat OR a toad
PARENTS ARE REMINDED THAT FIRST YEARS ARE NOT ALLOWED THEIR OWN BROOMSTICK.
She re-read the letter a few times. She would have thought that this was a huge prank that the Dursleys were playing- if not for the fact that they had absolutely no sense of humor.
She was excited to go- but she didn't know how to reply to the letter- with an owl of all things? She didn't even know how to buy all the necessary stuff- she doubted she could find them in any of the shops she knew.
Sighing she laid her head on top of the table and stared out of the window when- a owl came and landed on the edge of the window. She sat up, startled, staring at the owl incredulously- had it followed her here for a reply to the letter?
After looking around and making sure that no one was around, she approached the owl and bent down to whisper at it
"Do you want my reply to the letter?" she asked. She felt stupid- talking to the owl but this really was the best idea she had at the moment.
The owl hooted in response.
She ran to the librarian's table and asked for a paper and a pen. The librarian looked confused, but she had known Rose for a long time so she obliged.
Sitting in her spot, she scribbled onto the paper,
To whoever it may concern,
I accept the invitation to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. However, I have no idea where I can find the books, equipment and other materials. I only found out about the existence of magic today and would appreciate more information on the topic.
Sincerely, Rose Potter
She hesitantly extended it towards the owl, who clamped it in its beak and flew out of the window.
She stared around for a moment, a helpless feeling passing over her along with the fear of not knowing what would happen in the future, before she curled back into her seat and fell asleep with her head on the table, dreaming of flying on dragons and bright green lights.
Tell me if ya liked it!
