Chapter 3
After what felt like an eternity Brendan reached the corner where May had disappeared, his heart pounding painfully in his chest.
Where was she?
Skidding to a stop, his ruby eyes searched for a sign of his childhood friend. With how fast she'd been going, she should be way up ahead.
There wasn't anyone on the path.
There wasn't even a hint of the red, dusty dirt settling after being stirred up other than where he was.
Clenching his jaw, he heard something crying.
Just past a boulder was a small, brown pokémon, bawling its eyes out, May's blue mach bike clattered on the ground, right on its head.
Eyes wide, Brendan couldn't believe it.
He'd found May's bike, but no May.
Trying to remain calm, he frowned, 'it's ok, this is May we're talking about. She's blessed with luck from Arceus himself, I swear… so she's got to be somewhere. People don't teleport around mountains like psychic types. No, she's definitely somewhere.'
Gulping, Brendan glanced up the route, wishing he'd seen the wrong thing the first time.
She wasn't there.
Clenching his hands, Brendan glared around the narrow path, hoping for any sign that she'd be there.
The wind howled around him, though Brendan wasn't trying to protect his eyes, not even sure if they were watering because of the wind.
He looked up the rickety path and realised that there was no hope for May being up there, not with how quickly it had happened and the lack of footprints.
The wind howled around him, his ruby eyes frantically trying to find her.
Feeling an uncomfortable, sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, Brendan turned to stare down the cliff.
If May had fallen down there… she could be—no! He wasn't going to think about that! Anything but that.
'May!' He roared at the vast canyon, hoping for a whisper, anything.
She had to be alive.
Waiting, Brendan tried to ignore the horrible, sinking pit he felt in his stomach, only growing larger and larger.
Was May really gone?
He'd never even gotten to tell her how he felt. She's always been there, grinning at him and poking him, teasing him. He couldn't even remember a time when she hadn't been there to annoy him in one way or another.
Even on his journey around Hoenn, she'd been Xtransceiving him daily. He'd never really thought that she'd ever not be there.
No, he had to try and find her with his own eyes.
She couldn't just be gone, not like this.
Falling to his knees, he peered over the edge, but saw nothing but the red dirt canyon typical to Mount Chimney.
Gulping, Brendan hated how weak he'd been. He should have kept up with her. After all the years they'd spent together, he knew what May was like.
Scrubbing at his eyes, Brendan hated how weak he was. He should have been stronger, faster, more reliable.
What could he do? Who had he brought?
Blaziken couldn't search this terrain nearly fast enough, and May could be in a critical condition… or worse.
He should have known to bring more pokémon. His hands brushed against his pokébelt. Swampert wasn't going to be any use, either. Feeling a pokéball shake, Brendan's heart lurched.
How could he forget that he'd brought a flying type?
If he didn't take control of his emotions soon, May could really be in trouble.
If he found her.
Shoving that negative thought out of his mind, Brendan promised, 'I will find her.'
And when he did, he'd he having a serious conversation with her about just what she could and couldn't do. Racing up Mount Chimney like an alpha rapidash on heat was precisely something she couldn't do.
'Groudon, please help her,' he whispered, his hand tightening around Swellow's pokéball.
Hi everyone,
I thought I'd update all three of my WIP stories today. I promise this story is going to get better soon :)
Poor Brendan is really going through it, too.
