Dr. Rose had just finished her shift, so she headed upstairs to check on Matt. She entered Matt's room and saw Dawson sitting in a chair with her head on Matt's bed.

Dr. Rose walked over to Dawson and placed a hand on her back. The feeling of Dr. Rose hand on her back woke Dawson up. She looked up to see Dr. Rose standing there. "Dr. Rose?" Dawson was still trying to wake up.

"Hey Dawson. Why don't you run home for a bit? I'll sit with Matt." Dr. Rose had this sweet caring smile on her face. "I'll call you if he wakes. I promise."

Dawson thought about it for a moment but then agreed. She need to go home shower, and grab some stuff for Matt. "Thank you."

"Anytime."

Dawson gets up and gathers her belongings. "Dr. Rose?"

"Yes?"

"How do you know Matt?" Gabby needed to know who she was leaving her husband alone with.

"We met one summer when he was in the academy. We became close friends." Dr. Rose could see the relief in Dawson's face when she said close friends. "You can call me Amber by the way."

"Thank you Dr. Ro... Amber. I appreciate everything you've done for Matt."

"You're welcome Dawson."

"Gabriela. Everyone calls me Gabby."

Amber smiled. "Go home Gabby I'll call you if he wakes." Gabby nods and then leaves Matt's hospital room to go home.

Amber makes herself comfortable pulling out her tablet to work on some charts. She was hoping Matt might be happy to see her at least. She understands why Kelly was upset, but maybe Matt would be different since they were just friends.

Amber had finished charting and was playing on her phone when she heard Matt starting to groan. She stood up and moved closer to him. "Matt? Open your eyes if you can hear me."

Matt forced his eyes open looking up at the women that stood above him. He blinked a few times trying to bring her into focus. But he had to be dreaming, it couldn't be her. "Amber?" Her dark brown hair hanging over him forming around her face.

"Hey there sleepy head." Amber smiled as Matt started to realize she was really there. "You in any pain?"

"A little bit. My chest and head hurt." Amber helped Matt move the bed into a sitting up position.

"I'll order a dose of pain meds for you and I need to go call Gabby." Matt gave Amber a little nod as she made her way out of his room.

When she came back into the room a nurse was with her to administer the pain medication. "Gabby is on her way." Amber took her original seat next to Matt's bed while the nurse gave him the medication.

Once the nurse had left Matt looked at Amber trying to process everything. "When did you get back?"

"3 months ago." Amber looked down at her hands, she knew she should of reached out but every time she thought about it she decided not too.

"Does Kelly know?"

Matt's question stung Amber's heart, the look Kelly had on his face when he first saw her flashed across her mind. "He just walked out when he saw me."

"Can you blame him?"

Amber looked up at Matt trying to hold the tears back. "No, I can't." Her voice cracked as she spoke.

"You broke his heart Amber." Matt had this look of pity on his face. But before Amber could speak there was a knock at the door and then it opened reveling Gabby and Kelly as they walked in.

"Hey babe." Gabby walked over to Matt, leaning over to give him a hug and a kiss. "How you feeling?"

Gabby absolutely lit up Matt's world. The smile that came across his face when she entered the room was as bright as the the sun. "I'm feeling pretty good. Ready to go home and back to work."

"You won't be able to return to work for a couple weeks. You need to heal and get cleared by one of the CFD's doctors. But you should be able to go home tomorrow." Amber was doing her best to avoid Kelly's eyes.

Gabby wiped away the few tears she had shed when she saw Matt was awake. "Thank you Amber."

"Anything for Matt." Amber stood up. "Well my shift ended a while ago, so I am going to head home. I'll see you tomorrow Matt."

"See you tomorrow Rose Bud." Amber smiled. He still remembered her old nickname. Amber made her way out of Matt's room completely avoiding Kelly.

Amber was standing at the elevator waiting for the doors to open when she heard footsteps running towards her. "Amber?!" She turned around to see none other than Kelly Severide headed towards her.

"Kelly?" There was a sound of confusion in her voice.

Kelly stopped just a few feet away from her. "I just wanted to say thank you for saving Matt."

"You're welcome Kelly. It is my job to save lives." Amber was fighting every impulse in her body that said to jump into Kelly's arms.

Kelly shoved his hands in his pockets fighting back his own nerves. "I know but just with..."

Amber cut Kelly off. "Anything that happens in my personal life doesn't effect my judgment. I'm still going to save whoever I can that walks through the ED doors. That's the oath I took." There was a ringing sound that signaled the elevator doors were opening.

"Right. I'll see you around."

"See you around Kelly."

Amber turns to get on the elevator but then she feels someone grab her arm and spin her around. She then found her self in Kelly's embrace. It took her a second to realize what was going on but she returned the hug. The smell of his cologne filled her nose, bring back all of their memories together.

Amber didn't know how long they had been standing there hugging, her head resting against his chest listening to the sound of his heartbeat. Kelly had rested his chin atop Amber's head, his arms tightly wrapped around her. The elevator doors eventually closing as no one had gotten on.

"I've missed you Amber." If they hadn't of been so close she would of missed what he said due to the fact he was whispering.

"I... I missed you to Kelly." She spokes the words into his chest, choking back a sob. Amber could feel Kelly tightening his arms around her even more.

They only separated from their embrace as someone had said Ambers name.

"Amber."

She turns around to see Will standing there looking at her curiously. "Hey Will."

"I thought your shift ended this morning?"

"It did. I was sitting with Matt. Allowing his wife to go home for a bit." Amber could feel that Kelly was standing right behind her, having him so close felt so right.

"Well I just got off. Want to go get lunch?"

"Uh sure. The diner as usual?" Will and Amber go for lunch together after work on a regular bases. Sometimes Will's brother Jay would join them.

"Yep. I'll see you there in 10." Will headed off back down the hallway.

Amber turned around and almost crashed right into Kelly because he was so close. She placed a hand on his chest to stop herself frozen falling into him. "Well I'll see you around Kelly."

"Uh yeah see ya."

Amber press the elevator button, the same sound from earlier goes off and the doors open. Amber steps inside pressing the button for the bottom floor. When she moves back from the buttons she sees Kelly still standing there watching her as the elevator door slide close. It felt as if when those door slid close, that it closed on their relationship. Shattering both their hearts again.
