After leaving the firehouse Amber drove around for a bit not really wanting to go home. She soon found herself at Will's apartment. She knocked on the door and waited for him to answer.
It took a couple minutes before Amber heard footsteps on the other side of the door and then the sound of the door unlocking. The door came open to reveal Will standing there only in his sweatpants with bags under his eyes, looking exhausted.
"Amber?"
"Hey."
"What are you doing here?" Amber was taken aback by Will's harsh tone.
"I…I wanted to see what we were doing for Jay's funeral." Amber suddenly felt very awkward. She could feel herself sinking further into her body.
Will had this blank stare on his face before he spoke. "We? There's no we Amber. I'm planning my brothers funeral. I don't need your help."
"Will…"
But he cut her off. "No Amber. You went crawling back to Kelly. Jay's body wasn't even cold yet and you were already going back to him." Amber was shell shocked. Will had never treated her this way. She couldn't find any words to say. "Goodbye Amber."
Will slammed the door in her face and locked it. Amber sulked back down to her car to cry. She not only lost Jay but she was pretty sure she lost her best friend.
Her phone started ringing. She quickly picked it up thinking it was Will calling to apologize but no. It was Kelly. Amber almost answered but then Will's words came back to her. You went crawling back to Kelly. Jay's body wasn't even cold yet.
The phone had stopped ringing and Amber sat in her car in silence. Feeling completely alone.
Next Shift
Kelly had tried calling and texting Amber several times after the incident at the firehouse but she never picked up. He was trying to give her her space but it was hard. All he wanted was for her to be back in his arms.
Kelly was sitting in his office writing up his report from the last call. It had to be well passed midnight when he heard a knock at his door. He looked over to see Amber standing there.
Kelly jumped up and opened the door. "Amber. Hey." Kelly would be lying if he said he wasn't happy to see her.
"Jay's funeral is tomorrow and I can't sleep." Amber was sniffling as she spoke. "I don't know why I came here." Amber looked down at the ground not wanting to meet Kelly's eyes.
Kelly placed a finger under her chin and lifted her face so he could look at her. He noticed the bags under her eyes and how red and puffy they were. "You are welcome here anytime you need me."
Kelly grabbed Amber's hand and pulled her into his office closing the door behind them. He guided her over to his bunk and then he shut his blinds. "I probably have something in my locker if you don't want to wear jeans to sleep in."
"That would be nice."
Kelly smiled and left his office to go retrieve the pair of sweatpants he kept in his locker. He came back a few minutes later and handed them to her. Kelly then turned away from her so she could change without him staring at her.
"You can turn back around Kelly."
Kelly turned back around to see Amber standing there in his grey sweatpants and a black tank top with no bra. She looked amazing to him. "Lay down."
Kelly slipped off his boots and the two of them crawled onto his bunk. Kelly pulled the covers over them as Amber got comfortable facing his chest. Kelly held her close like he did the other night. "Get some sleep." Kelly spoke softly as he placed a kiss to her forehead.
Amber felt herself relax under Kelly's embrace. He always felt like home. A sense of peace washed over Amber as she finally drifted off to sleep.
The next morning Amber woke up in Kelly's arms. She almost smiled but then remember what today was. It was Jay's funeral. Amber lightly tapped Kelly so she could get up.
"Hm?" Kelly hadn't even opened his eyes.
Amber spoke softly "I need to go get ready for Jay's funeral."
Kelly looked at his watch and then looked at Amber. "If you wait another 30 minutes we can go together. We were all planning to go."
There was a knock at Kelly's door and then it came open and Matt was standing there.
"Severide, Chief…" Matt trailed off as he realized Amber was there. "Oh hey Amber."
"Hey Matt."
Kelly was waiting for Matt to finish what he was saying. "What did Chief want Casey?"
"Uh yeah. Chief called in the next shift 30 minutes early so we could all go get ready."
"Alright thanks Casey." Matt gave a little nod before closing the door to Kelly's office. "Let's get going then."
Amber and Kelly crawled out of his bunk. She then picked up her clothes not really wanting to change and followed Kelly to the locker room so he could get his bag. They could hear everyone chatting as they walked in.
The locker room then fell silent when they realized Amber was there. Amber felt almost awkward, like they were walking on egg shells around her. She decided to try and lighten the mood.
"Hey Otis sorry about you having to clean up my vomit from the other night." Amber was trying to smile as she spoke.
"Not the first time. Won't be the last time." Amber raised an eyebrow studying Otis trying to figure out what he meant. "I mean it wasn't the first time I've cleaned up someone else vomit around here."
Amber nodded her head "Ah I see." She then felt Kelly tap her shoulder. "Let's get going Amber."
Amber nodded her head. "See you guys later." Amber followed Kelly out of the firehouse.
"I have my stuff in my car if we just want to head to your place to change?"
"Sure sounds good." Amber was suddenly feeling very nervous about going to Jay's funeral. Will hadn't spoken to her since the other day. "Follow me."
They both climbed into their cars and headed to Amber's place to get ready.
