Chapter One
The cordiform face hidden behind the skirt of Queen Anneliese of Endalia had caught Elsa off guard before she composed herself, shaking Queen Anneliese's hand.
"Queen Anneliese, Queen Erika, Arendelle's happy to trade with such a welcoming kingdom like Endalia," Elsa smiled.
"As are we and not just for the Arendelle chocolate Princess Anna promised us in your proposal," Queen Erika smirked.
Elsa rolled her eyes playfully. "I thought she'd snuck something in there while I wasn't looking." The cordiform faced little girl slowly tilted her head forward, giving her a lucid view of her bangs as the queen of Arendelle knelt down beside her. "Hello there. Who are you?"
"Princess Rosetta, your queenly majesty," Rosetta muttered, handing her a bouquet. "Mama said that I shouldn't give you something because she and Mommy usually don't do that during trade meetings but I made you something anyway."
Elsa took the bouquet and smiled warmly. "An ice bouquet! How sweet!" She stood up, turning to Anneliese and Erika in surprise. "It seems like your daughter's never bothered by the cold just like I am. Was she born with powers as well?"
"Yes and that made it difficult for her to get adopted as most people feared what she could do with them until four years ago," Queen Erika sighed. "Anneliese and I adopted her out of love and we and our sons Prince Stefan and Prince Theodore adore her very much even with her powers."
The three women turned as they heard a startled gasp, seeing petite ice spikes on the floor with one lodged inside the middle of a familiar talking snowman.
"I'm sorry if I ruined anything Queen Elsa but this snowman just came into the room and he scared me," Rosetta apologized. "I make snowmen all the time back home with my brothers but none of them talked to me before."
"It's okay. It's not Olaf's first time startling someone and it most likely won't be his last," Elsa explained, waving away the little girl's ice spikes as she led the snowman over to the bewildered family.
Olaf took Rosetta's hand and arched his eyebrows before jumping up and down.
"You remind me of a younger Elsa!" He giggled. "Anna showed me a portrait of her once! Come on! Let's go find it!"
Rosetta hesitantly let the snowman lead the way, watching as her mothers and Elsa followed behind them.
As Rosetta stood patiently next to the portrait, Elsa smiled softly. She remembered that day well.
Especially Anna's impatience with having to sit still until the painter suggested she looked at her big sister which had their parents thank him in hushed voices filled with gratitude once he was finished painting them.
Now that she thought about it, the longer Rosetta stood, the more she could see the resemblance as a small smile graced her features.
"I honestly thought Olaf was pulling my and Erika's leg at first but he's right, our snowflake does look like a younger you Queen Elsa," Queen Anneliese smiled.
"Why don't you and Rosetta spend the day together, your majesty?" Queen Erika suggested. "She'll have something to do and Anneliese and I can tour Arendelle ourselves."
Elsa smiled at the suggestion. "That's a wonderful idea Queen Erika but I insist that my sister Princess Anna go with you. She knows the ins and outs of Arendelle like the back of her hand."
"It's settled then," Queen Anneliese smiled. She knelt down to Rosetta's level and stroked her hair. "Rosie, do you remember the rules we have for when you're in other kingdoms?"
"Yes Mama. I must be polite at all times with the exception of me feeling uncomfortable around someone, I have to say please and thank you if given anything, and I can't use my powers too much because I'll get sleepy and can't use them without the supervision of a grownup if I'm inside," Rosetta recited.
"We worry for her and others' safety when it comes to her powers so we have these rules in place. Snowflake understands that she's not a bad girl by any means but that we want her to be safe," Queen Erika explained, having Elsa nod in understanding.
"Olaf, would you like to come with us?" Rosetta asked, starting to get used to the talking snowman.
"Thank you Little Elsa but I think I'll be fine here!" Olaf giggled. "But you have to tell me everything that happens when you get back."
"Okay!"
Elsa took Rosetta by the hand as the little girl held her puffin toy that Erika had gotten from their ship twenty minutes prior.
"Is this a little friend of yours?" Elsa smiled.
Rosetta nodded softly. "His name's Mr. Puffin. Mama and my brother Stefan gave him to me when I first got adopted so is it okay if he comes along?"
"I don't see why not."
"Thank you, your queenly majesty!"
You're welcome!" Elsa chuckled. "Call me Elsa if you like."
Rosetta stroked Mr. Puffin's soft plush with her hand, looking hesitant. "You don't mind?"
Elsa shook her head, having her feel at ease.
Outside the castle gates, Rosetta could hear people laughing and saw them bowing to her and Elsa.
A little boy came up running towards the duo and bowed, holding up a flower.
"For you Princess Rosetta," The boy smiled. "My mama heard you were coming today so I wanted to give you something nice."
"Thank you," Rosetta smiled.
She placed the flower in her hair, hiding behind Elsa as the crowd increased in size.
Crowds of a humongous size made her feel uncomfortable as she feared that someone would treat her similarly to how some of the older kids at the Sunnyside House for Homeless Children, the orphanage she grew up in for the first four years of her life, would treat her.
Rosetta knew that not all people were like that but still kept her distance, coming out of hiding when she spotted two strawberry blonde braids in her view and smiled.
"Elsa! There you are! Who's this?" Anna asked.
"Princess Rosetta of Endalia Princess Anna," Rosetta curtised.
"Nice to meet you Rosetta. Are you enjoying Arendelle so far?"
"I don't know. I've only been in the castle so far."
"Well don't worry. There'll be plenty of things for you and Elsa to do," Anna assured. "Like the chocolate shop or Wandering Oaken's."
"Do I have to pay for anything?" Rosetta wondered. "I didn't bring any money with me."
"It's alright sweetheart. They usually give you anything free of charge," Elsa smiled. "I know from experience."
Rosetta watched as she whispered something in Anna's ear before the princess of Arendelle nodded softly and went away, leaving them alone.
She didn't question why they were being so secretive, feeling her magic close to bursting at any moment due to her excitement.
Releasing a small pile of snow from her hands, Rosetta smiled and looked up to see the queen of Arendelle giving her an affectionate smile.
She guessed the citizens of Arendelle were used to winter magic by now as nobody seemed to question her before waving away the small pile for she had something else to do.
Spending the day with Elsa, someone who she looked up to since reading her story.
Someone who had powers just like her.
She didn't know if she would have another opportunity like that as Rosetta pointed to one of the first shops she saw and took Elsa's hand, giggling happily.
