Author's note: wrote this at the very last minute so I might rewrite later.

That day had rolled around again. The day that the three of them did not like to dwell on. One were their lives were changed forever. One were they felt a piece of their lives leave them. It had been two years already but it still felt like yesterday. The pain was still there, somewhat dull but still noticeable.

Dr. Peter Venkman sighed as he got out of bed albeit with a few pains in his lower back.

Damn arthritis he thought as he headed into the bathroom. He gazed into the mirror and saw someone he still didn't recognize even after all this time. Wrinkles covered most of his face, his once medium brown hair now more of a dull brown with gray streaks. His green eyes still had that mischievous gleam in them from time to time but it was mostly invisible now. The only thing really noticeable were the dark circles under his eyes.

Jesus, he looked awful, more so than usual. Maybe it was just the fact that today was not a happy one he thought. After showering and putting on clean clothes, the mostly retired psychologist headed to the kitchen and made a cup of coffee.

"Peter, is that you?" Dana called as she walked into the kitchen.

"Yeah, just getting ready to head out to the cemetery with Ray and Winston." Peter replied.

"Alright, make sure to bundle up, it's quite cold outside." Dana said as she made herself a cup of coffee.

"Fitting..." Peter muttered.

Dana, seeing the tears in his eyes, set down her cup and wrapped her arms around her eccentric, but loving husband.

"I miss him so much..." Peter said as he tried to hold back his tears.

"I know." Dana replied sadly.

"Why...why did he have to go soon...?"

"I wish I knew Peter. I wish I knew."

The two held each other for a moment before letting go.

"Alright, I'm gonna meet Ray and Winston and I'll see you sometime later." Peter said as he put on his scarf.

"I'm gonna be with Janine for awhile, but we'll meet you guys there." Dana said, "Bye honey."

"Bye." Peter replied as he kissed his wife. He exited his apartment and made his way downstairs. Near the entrance to the building, he saw Dr. Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore waiting for him.

"You guys ready?" Peter asked.

"Ready as I'll ever be." Ray replied.

"Me too." Winston added.

The three retired Ghostbusters exited the building. It had snowed some the night before so the sidewalks were a little slippery as they made their way to the subway. From there, they rode for about 10 minutes before reaching their stop. Barely a word was said. After exiting the subway, they found themselves standing in front of a cemetery. After hesitating for a few moments, they entered the iron gates. They wandered around for a few minutes before finding the gravestone they were looking for. Etched on top of the stone was a small no ghost logo. The words carved into the stone were:

Egon Elijah Spengler

Born: November 21

Died: February 24

Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend, and Brother

Peter, Ray, and Winston stood there for awhile in the quiet cemetery as a light snow began to fall. After a while, Peter spoke up.

"Has it really been two years already?" he said, "Feels like yesterday he passed."

"Sure does." Winston sighed sadly, "Feels like only yesterday the three of us were at his deathbed, holding his hand and telling him how much we loved him."

"And it doesn't feel like that long ago he fell ill." Ray added, "God, he declined so fast..."

"He lost the ability to walk, almost lost his ability to talk, and he couldn't even tinker away with his experiments anymore." Peter said as he shook his head.

"Remember that Christmas when he surprised us by actually getting up and walking again." Ray said as he fondly remembered that day.

"Yeah, I was so overjoyed." Peter replied, "I Hines thought he was gonna get better."

"Then he relapsed and never recovered from it. That damn vasculitis." Winston added as sadness overcame his face.

"But he never gave up. He never let it get him down." Ray said.

Peter then turned to the stone and said: "Hey Spengs, thought we'd come by and say hi."

"We still can't believe it's been two years since you left us man." Winston added.

"We just wanted to let you know that we love you and miss you very much." Ray said as a tear fell from his eye.

"Our lives haven't been the same without you." Peter said as he shivered from the cold, "We miss your intelligence, mad-scientist tendencies, hell I even miss that death glare of yours from time to time."

"Janine and the kids are doing pretty good." Winston said, "I think Phoebe and Trevor are gonna want to start ghostbusting themselves soon."

"I swear Spengs, Phoebe is like your clone." Ray chuckled, "Right down to that Spengler genius."

"Well, Janine should be here soon, but we wanted to go ahead and come say hi." Peter said, "And hey, if you ever want to come visit sometime, you're more than welcome."

"We promise we won't blast you." Ray added.

Peter opened up his coat pocket and took out a Crunch bar. "You've earned it Spengs." he said as he set it gently on the gravestone. Winston set out a small thing of Twinkies while Ray set out Egon's PKE meter.

"You know Egon, I'm surprised your affinity for junk food didn't kill you first." Winston said with a smile.

"Come on, let's drink a coke in honor of our beloved brain Dr. Egon Elijah Spengler." Peter suggested.

"Good idea." Ray said as he turned to the gravestone and said "See you later Egon."

The three Ghostbusters walked out of the cemetery. However they didn't notice a ghostly hand reach out for the Twinkies and take a bite out of one.

Later that evening, the guys were gathered with their families at Janine's apartment. Egon's children Violet, Julian, and Daniel were there along with Julian's wife Callie and their children Trevor and Phoebe. The guys shared stories about their beloved friend and brother and ate a couple of Twinkies in his honor.

Later on, as Peter was going to bed, he thought about the day's events. He realized that although Egon's death still hurt from time to time, he remembered his friend with a smile mostly now. He fell asleep that night as his mind wandered through the happy memories he, Ray, and Winston had shared with Egon.

The End.
