Like A Father In More Ways Than One

Undyne waited patiently outside the school for her niece, Frisk. Checking the time as the bell rang, she smiled and soon saw her niece come out. "Hey, punk! Over here!" She called out playfully.

The child gasped at seeing her and grinned. "Auntie Undyne!" She exclaimed happily, running up to her and jumping up into her aunt's open arms, wrapping her own arms around her aunt's neck in a hug.

Undyne grinned and hugged Frisk tight, but not too tightly so that she didn't hurt her. "Hey, punk. How was school today?" She asked.

"It was good," the child said.

"Alright, let's get you home. Your mom has a meeting, but I think your dad's home."

With that, the fish woman lifted Frisk up onto her shoulders and spied Asriel and Chara coming out and the two ran up to her, to which she scooped them up and held them both in her arms. "Okay, are we all ready to go?" She asked.

"Yes!" The three kids cheered.

"Okay, hold on tight, cause we're going to go fast."

The three children squealed with delight as Undyne showed off her speed, the three hanging on as their aunt leapt over parked cars and did slides that would have qualified her for the baseball team. Frisk held on tight as she laughed happily too. When they got to the busier part of the city, Undyne slowed down for safety reasons and the kids spotted their father leaving his last meeting of the day.

"Look, there's Dad!" Asriel said excitedly.

"Daddy!" Chara called out happily.

"Hey, Dad!" Frisk called out.

Asgore, hearing his children, turned and smiled at seeing them with Undyne. "Ah, hello, my little ones," he said. "Hanging out with Aunt Undyne?"

"She picked us up from school today," Asriel said.

"Toriel had a meeting come up and called me as I was getting off my shift at the police station," Undyne said.

Asgore smiled. "Thank you for getting the children," he said. "Why don't we all go get pizza? Undyne, come join us."

"Like I'd turn down pizza," the fish woman said with a smirk as the kids cheered.

Asgore put in the pizza order and they went home. After eating the pizza, the three siblings had homework to do and so went up to their shared room while Undyne and Asgore sat in the living room, the king looking at the fish woman and noticing she looked exhausted.

"Undyne, how has work been?" He asked.

"Busy," she admitted. "We caught some people wanted by the Marshals and by the police in a few other states." She looked down. "One of the people wanted...was kidnapping kids and forcing them to do child labor at his junk yard. He was even starving them too."

Asgore looked horrified. "I hope he's in prison and all the children are safe," he said.

She nodded. "He's in Federal prison under heavy lock and key and the kids are all okay," she said. "One of them had to go to the hospital because he was very sick from having very little food. I checked on him before I left my shift today and he's doing a lot better. His family is really grateful and some of the kids who saw me when my team and I surprised their captor drew me pictures and had them mailed to the police station."

"That was sweet of them," Asgore said. "No doubt as a thank you for saving them."

"Wasn't just me," she said modestly. "But some of my teammates got sick when they saw the poor conditions the children had been forced to live in. We were all fortunate to find them still alive, because if we had been even an hour later...,"

She trailed off and Asgore pulled her into a hug. "Shh, don't think like that, Undyne," he said, gently rubbing her back. "You and your team made it and got the kids out and that horrible man is behind bars. He can't hurt them anymore thanks to you and your team. That's what really matters."

The fish woman sniffled before clinging to him, some tears escaping her eyes. "Some of the kids...were younger than Frisk and Chara," she said, her voice breaking. "Some of them had bruises on their faces and they didn't have clean clothes." She took a shaky breath. "Oh, Asgore. It was so horrible. How could someone be so cruel to defenseless children?"

She then paused as she recalled when she had been at first cruel towards Frisk and Asgore sensed it before gently pushing her back so that he was looking at her dead in the eye. "Undyne, do not compare yourself to that man," he said firmly. "Yes, you were at first misguided about Frisk, but you changed and learned that not all humans were bad. That man you locked up had no regard for those children. You did."

Undyne looked at him, seeing he was giving her a look that told her to not blame herself. Asgore's face then softened. "You learned the error of your ways and dedicated yourself to protecting others as you became protective of Frisk," he said, his voice now gentle. "It's because of you and your team that those families are tucking their children into bed tonight instead of laying them down to rest of eternity."

She looked at him, his words hitting hard and he smiled. "I mean it, Undyne," he said. "Don't ever doubt yourself."

She hugged him again, sniffling before she finally began to calm down. "Thanks, Asgore," she said after a bit. "Guess I needed a pep talk from a father figure."

He smiled before he paused at what she said, looking at her in surprise and she looked a bit embarrassed, but continued. "Yeah, you've always been like a dad to me. Remember the time I lost my eye?"

"Yes, I recall," he said, remembering so long ago as if it had been yesterday.

"Who found me and treated me for my injuries and got me to a doctor and even then, stayed by my side until I could leave the hospital?"

He nodded. "I did," he said. "Because I was concerned you didn't have any other family."

"And I didn't until Gerson took me in," Undyne admitted. "I was so scared back then, when I lost my eye. I was afraid that I wouldn't make it, but you found me and lifted me up like a parent would a child and you healed me as best you could until we got to the doctor."

Asgore smiled. "Well, I wasn't going to leave you injured like that," he said. "My duty is to make sure my subjects are safe and well."

The fish woman smiled. "Come on, Fluffybuns, it was more than just duty that made you stay to make sure I was okay," she said half-serious, half-teasing.

He chuckled. "You got me," he said before sobering. "I had sworn after what happened with Asriel and Chara so long ago that no other monster under my watch would be hurt, but then you go hurt." He looked away. "I guess it wasn't just fatherly concern for you, but also guilt that you had been hurt and I hadn't been able to stop the person who hurt you."

She smiled. "Hey, that was long ago," she said. "And just now, you stepped into the role of father while listening to me about this case. I didn't realize how much it was affecting me until I began telling you about it."

Asgore smiled. "I'm glad I could help and be the father you needed," he said.

"You're like a father in more ways than one to me," Undyne admitted. "Just like Gerson."

The king was honored to be compared to the turtle that Undyne called her father and smiled. "Do you feel better now?" He asked.

She nodded. "Yeah, thanks," she said before listening for a moment. "Is it just me, or have those three punks been really quiet?"

They went upstairs to check on them and smiled as they saw the three had fallen asleep while apparently doing their homework. Asriel had been laying on his stomach while doing his homework and now had fallen asleep while Frisk had fallen asleep on her bed and Chara had fallen asleep at the desk the three shared.

Smiling, Asgore walked in and picked up his son, putting him to bed and doing the same for Chara and Frisk while Undyne gathered up their school books and put them in a neat pile on the desk, giving the homework a brief glance and smiling. "Looks like they fell asleep solving the last problems for each of their homework," she said, keeping her voice down.

"They can fix that in the morning," the goat king said gently before he and Undyne left and he noticed how late it was. "You can crash here. I'll fix up the couch."

"You don't have to do that," she protested.

He shook his head. "It's late and I know Alphys is still away at that seminar," he said. "Besides, Toriel is going to make butterscotch pancakes in the morning and I think you'll enjoy them."

Undyne smiled. "Okay, okay, you twisted my arm," she said jokingly.

Asgore had the couch set up in moments and as the fish woman got comfortable, she felt a blanket being placed over her. "Goodnight, Undyne," she heard him say to her.

"Night, Asgore. And thanks," she said softly before falling asleep.

Toriel came in some time later, looking tired. "Sorry I'm late," she said, keeping her voice down as she saw Undyne was sound asleep on the couch.

"No worries. Undyne picked up the children and we got pizza. There's some left over that I can heat up for you," Asgore said.

"Thank you, yes," she said. "Are the children in bed?"

He nodded. "Fell asleep finishing up their homework," he said with a chuckle.

She chuckled too, eating the pizza that her husband warmed up for her before she looked curious. "Did Undyne crash out on the couch after dinner?" She asked.

"We talked for a bit about a case she and her team had solved and she needed a parent figure to talk to," the male goat said. "She apparently sees me as a father figure."

Toriel smiled. "That's so sweet," she said. "And it's a good thing I picked up some extra ingredients to make those pancakes tomorrow morning."

Asgore chuckled before he and his wife went up to bed, leaving both the children to happy dreams and leaving Undyne to rest peacefully knowing that she had a father figure she could turn to when she needed someone to talk to.

It's been a little while since I've done an Undertale story, but I hope this one turned out good. :)
