Kuri was meditating on the flames late into the night. She was aggravated. A month had passed since the Dream Sorcerer case with L, and she found she missed him.
There was a ring. Bewildered, the priestess pulled out a phone. Where had it come from?
As soon as she picked up the phone, it lit up with a large, gothic, L. Kuri smiled.
"Nice to see you again, L."
"But you can't see me."
Kuri just laughed. "Same old L."
"And now I'm old?" A trace of humor in the synthetic voice.
"Of course not." Kuri laughed. "Just older than me."
"I am? How do you know my age?"
Kuri gave the screen a look. "Because I just know things."
"Ah yes. I am aware of this."
"Enough." Kuri sighed. "Now tell me, why did you call? Is there another case for us? Or is it…the Kira investigation?"
"You have been expecting my call."
Kuri smiled at the phone. "Of course. I knew you would call me because I cannot be killed by Kira."
"I had a feeling that was the case. Any chance you will explain why?"
Kuri grinned. "Not a chance. Nice try."
"So it is my understanding that you agree with Kira." L got right to the point, as usual.
"I agree with what he is doing, yes." Kuri said cagily.
"So you do not wish to eliminate him?"
"Yes I do actually." Kuri said irritably. "I agree that the world should be saved. But not through fear and murder. I do want Kira to be caught. But I hope that the world will be left better from what has happened."
There was a silence.
"So. Come work with me. For real this time."
Kuri lifted the phone to her face. "Put myself in danger to catch someone who's ideals I actually agree with? No thanks."
This wasn't true and she knew it. The truth was that she was almost certain she had met Kira at her cram school. If she went to Task Force Headquarters, it could alert him, and put L in danger.
And Kuri would never do that.
"Come with me to Crepe Fantasy?"
Kuri almost dropped the phone. "Are you asking me out?"
"Perhaps." The phone paused. "Does this mean you refuse this as well?"
"Ah!" Kuri was genuinely shocked. "No! I accept!"
"I will see you there." There was a trace of triumph in the synthetic voice.
A location appeared on the phone. Kuri quickly memorized it before the phone beeped and exploded.
