Chapter 2 - Wolves and towers
After a long journey to Banapur, Jessica and Ajay were finally here. Sabal went first and the two right after him. They went down some stairs and Ajay walked up to Sabal ,while Jessica stayed behind listening. "How did you know to find us?" Asked Ajay with curiosity how him and Jessica got into this situation. Sabal looked at him and explained. "We saw Pagan's chopper nearby. He's never down this far south and I wanted to know why. Lucky for you we were in the area when we got Darpan's text." He stopped and beckoned Jessica forward. She did just that and Sabal moved little forward and pointed towards the village. "We we're here. Welcome to Banapur, home of the Golden Path." Just then some woman came to the trio. She had a black hair and wore a orange vest. Young girl was behind her. "Who is this? Where's Darpan?" Both Jessica and Ajay could hear the irritation in her voice. 'Guess not everyone is happy that we are here' thought Jessica as she was looking at the other woman. Sabal proceeded to talk to her. "He didn't make it." He pointed to Ajay. "This is Ajay Ghale, Mohan's son." Then he pointed to Jessica. "And this is Jessica Brown." Jessica tried to smile, but that didn't interest the other woman or neither the fact that Ajay is the son of Mohan Ghale. "Let me understand, Darpan's dead? And you brought me this?" She pointed to Jessica and Ajay. Before Jessica could say something, which Ajay saw as a invitation to a cat fight, he started talking. "We are not involved in whatever this is. We are just looking for Lakshmana." The woman looked at Sabal with an angry look. "We're in the middle of a fucking war. We don't have time for tourists." She turned around and started to walk away with that young girl. Sabal raised his voice. "What was I supposed to do? Just leave them there?" But the woman just waved her arm as in a way that she is not listening. Sabal shook his head and turned to Ajay and Jessica. "I'm sorry, Amita's a little touchy. I'll talk to her. As for Lakshmana it sounds like it could be a temple, or shrine. But if that's the case, it's in the north. The north is enemy territory and we can't get you there, not yet. Go and clear your heads. Come find me when you are ready." He walked away leaving both Jessica and Ajay alone. "So what do you think about this?" Jessica asked suddenly. "I didn't expect this to happen. Sorry for dragging you into this." Ajay felt guilty because Jessica's life was already put into danger. She however just smiled. "You couldn't have known what would happen. You can't see into the future. So I'm not blaming you. Besides it was fun. Without you falling off the cliff. That wasn't." Ajay smiled. "So do you want to look around?" Jessica thought for a while and nodded. "Let's go." They both walked around Banapur for a while when suddenly Ajay saw a man being brought to one of the houses with Sabal behind him. "We should check it out." Said Ajay but Jessica was looking towards the archery range, where Amita was with that young girl. "You go see what is with Sabal and I will go and see this Amita." She pointed to the archery range and Ajay nodded. "And Jess, be nice. I know how you get when you are angry." Jessica smiled and nodded. "I will be nice." Then she added under her breath. "If she will be nice." Jessica waved at Ajay. "Be careful and don't get into trouble." Ajay laughed. "Me? Never. You? I wouldn't be so sure."
Jessica's mission:
Jessica went to the archery range. She saw Amita trying to teach the young girl how to shoot from a bow. "Sabal says I shouldn't be doing this." Said the young girl while pointing at the bow. Amita clasped her hands together. "I am teaching you how to protect yourself." Then they both turned to Jessica who was listening to their conversation. "Ah, the tourist." 'Be nice Jessica.' Reminded Jessica to herself so she wouldn't snap. "I am Amita. This is Bhadra." Said Amita with bored tone. "Hi, I am Jessica." She smiled and Bhadra returned the smile. Amita turned to Bhadra. "Keep working." Amita moved closer to Jessica. "Look, I overreacted back there. We're at war. We keep losing soldiers, the work keeps piling up." Jessica stopped her. "Is there anything I can do? I'm not a soldier, but I want to help. I know few things." Amita nodded and continued. "Okay, sure. There's a farm not far from here. Kanan runs it, but she's old and she could use your help with some wild animals. I need you to keep the hides intact, so use this. I will upload the coordinates to your GPS. " She turned to look at Bhadra, who dropped her bow. "Bhadra, what are you? Pick it up. Try again. Very good." Jessica looked at them and turned to look at the bow Amita pointed to before going to Bhadra. She picked the bow up along with some arrows. 'This is where the fun begins' ,thought Jessica to herself before going in the direction that Amita uploaded to her GPS. Jessica followed the path away from Banapur and found a quad bike and rode to the direction of the farm. When she arrived the place was a mess. The old woman was sitting and drinking something. Around her were dead pigs. 'Fuck' she thought. "Amita sent me over, she said you might have some kind of wild animal problem?" There Jessica stood without an answer so she decided to call to Amita. "Hey Amita, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do here." Amita sighed. "Wolves are common nuisance for Kanan's farm. She killed off a number of them, but this year they're especially aggressive and I'm worried about her. There is a den nearby. Clear it out. I think Kanan has supplies stockpiled somewhere on her farm that you can use. And Jessica. Skin your kills. We can always use the pelts." "Alright, sure thing." Jessica answered. She made her way to the wolves' den and started to kill them. It made her kind of sad, since she liked dogs, but it needed to be done. She skinned the wolves and made the construction that was holding the den crumble. She packed the skins and started to make her way back to the farm. During the ride she was thinking about how is Ajay doing. 'He is probably helping Sabal with something' she thought to herself. When she arrived to the farm, she saw Amita and Bhadra helping Kanan. Jessica smiled at Bhadra. "Hey. How are doing Bhadra?" She returned the smile and responded. "Good." Jessica turned to Amita and showed the pack with the pelts. "I uh, brought you these pelts. I thought maybe you could use them." Amita smiled. "These are good, Jessica, but you keep them." She pointed to Kanan. "She has enough for her thangka paintings." Jessica looked at Amita with a confused look. "I'm sorry, Thangka? What?" Amita pointed at some paintings next to her. "This one is about the life of a guru, this one is about the demon Yalung. This one is about goddess Kyra and that one is about Bhadra." She pointed and explained each one. She stopped at the last one, that of Bhadra. "The next Tarun Matara." Amita sees Jessica's confusion and explained. "Tarun Matara is a living goddess, if you believe Sabal." Bhadra meanwhile took Kanan inside of the house. "That's no life for a child, being treated as an object. A thing." Jessica nodded. "I can agree with you on that." Amita put a hand on Jessica's shoulder. "Thanks for your help. Later we'll show you how to put those to good use." With that she walked away and Jessica was starting to make her way back to Banapur. 'I have a lot of things to tell Ajay' she thought to herself. Just then Sabal called her.
Ajay's mission:
As Jessica made her way to the archery range, Ajay went after Sabal. When he arrived so did a medic. "Fuck. Give him some morphine! And turn of that fucking radio!" Sabal yelled as the medic was helping the soldier on the bed , who was clearly wounded. "What happened to him?" Asked Ajay. Sabal who was holding the soldier's arm looked up. "He fell. Pagan floods the airwaves and we have to endure his bullshit. Enough is enough! I told him to climb up the old bell tower, take over the transmitters- hijack the broadcast locally. Except..." He pointed to the man on the bad who yelped in pain. "I can do it." Said Ajay suddenly. Sabal looked at him and nodded. "Way to step up, brother. There's nobody guarding it but it's a tricky climb. Promise me you won't fall." Ajay nodded. "I promise, I won't." 'And if I had Jessica would kill me' Ajay thought to himself. He turned around and walked out of the house. Ajay used the zip line that got him down to the valley. He then got on a quad bike and made his way to the bell tower. When he arrived under it he found a grappling hook. He was climbing and it reminded him of time when he and Jessica went to the mountains on their own.
Flashback
"Isn't this fun Ajay? Two of us on a dangerous mission in the mountains!" Said Jessica as she and Ajay were making their way back to the camp. Ajay laughed at her. "Come on Jess, we need to climb over there." He pointed to a place above them. "You have your hook?" Asked Jessica. Ajay nodded and made his way first. Then Jessica followed. They were eighteen at the time and the trip was the best thing ever ."Isn't this amazing? The clear air, the quiet, expect the wind." Ajay smiled at Jessica's description of the mountain. "So where to next time?" Asked Ajay. "I was thinking about lakes or maybe rivers..."
Ajay smiled at the memory. However he did not have the time to dwell since he was close to the bell tower. He saw two members of Pagan's army. 'So much for not being guarded' he thought to himself. He killed the two people and started to climb on the bell tower. In the end it worked out and he destroyed the signal. He made his way down by the zip line and that's when Sabal called him. "Ajay, when you have time, go see Longinus. He's a friend to the Golden Path and he'll be grateful you helped us. I already called Jessica, she said she will join you there." Ajay smiled ,when he heard that Jess will join him and asked. "Longinus you said?" "Yes. He's weapons dealer and priest if you can believe that? Longinus is a little crazy but if you want guns, he's the man you should see. I'll update your map."
Ajay made his way to the lake where this priest guy lives. From the distance he saw one person waiting next to the house. He saw it is Jessica with her purple jacket, black long boots and brown pants. She saw him and waved at him. "Hi Ajay! How was your climb? I heard from Sabal." Ajay smiled at his friend's concern. "It wasn't that bad. I remembered our mountain climb during it." Jessica smiled sadly. "Yeah, good times." "What were you doing anyway Jess?" Asked Ajay. "Just wolf hunting and bonding with Amita and Bhadra. I know surprising. No let's see this crazy priest guy." Ajay nodded and they both moved inside. Ajay opened the door first and let Jessica in first. "Welcome. I am Longinus and you...you are Ajay and Jessica! I heard about you two. Welcome to my church away from church." Longinus said as he moved away from his table. "Church that sells guns?" Questioned Ajay. Longinus happily nodded. "Of course! For the meek shall inherit the Earth, my friends. All they need are some good guns. " He points to the guns in some crates. "Revelation 5:5. It is the most invigorating read. "And one of the elders sayeth unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David hath prevailed to open the book, and loose the seven seals thereof!" He read part of the bible and Jessica and Ajay looked at each other confused. Ajay wanted to say something but Longinus cut him off. "It is our savior! It is our savior returned to us as a lion a warrior!" He comes closer to them. "So, I started thinking to myself. When the Son of God is reborn, what gun would he use?" Once again Ajay tried to asked him. "What-" "When Christ returns to break the seven seals and bring about the Rapture, he returns as a lion, yes? A lion needs teeth!" Jessica was now so confused she wished that she paid attention on religious lessons. "What gun would Jesus choose? Deuteronomy 32:47? "For there are no empty words for you, but your very life?" Or maybe! Revelations 19:11. "The discretion of a man deferreth his anger." Ajay shook his hands and said. "We don't know what you're talking about-" Once again he was interrupted. "A soldier knows. A soldier always knows...For we have seen the rapture and survived it. You need guns to do righteous work, Ajay, Jessica...for every gun is a bible, for every bullet a sermon. And for every radio tower that you free from Pagan's lies, I will give you something. A reward. It is will of God." He then pulls out two Scorpions and holds it for both Ajay and Jessica to give. "Here. This is for the first one." They both to reach for them but a call interrupts them. "Banapur is under attack! We need fighters here now!" Ajay picks up his walkie-talkie. "Sabal! What's happening?" "We're under attack! Stay away! It's-" The call from Sabal gets interrupted. "We have to go to Banapur and help them!" Jessica said with determination. Jessica and Ajay take their weapons from Longinus and he sends them off with a short speech. "And he said to them, "Go forth into all the world and proclaim the gospel who the whole creation." Ajay and Jessica run to a quad bike. "Who's driving ?" Jessica asks. "I will. You look around and shoot if you see any enemies." Jessica nodded and Ajay started the bike and Jessica sat behind him.
Ajay was driving with speed, while Jessica was shooting the enemies around them. Suddenly Ajay's walkie-talkie started speaking. "I wish you could remember what it was like back then Ajay. Your mother and I, with you on her hip, oh those were the days. She was never happier than she was back then, and I should say the same for myself. We had such plans, not just for our little family, but for Kyrat. It wasn't always like this, I long for those days but then it's too late, I tried, I really really did, this place is ruinous, try not to let them drag you or Jessica down Ajay. Ishwari didn't send you back here for that." The call from Pagan ends and both Jessica and Ajay don't know what to think. "We will talk about it later, okay Ajay?" Jessica asks and Ajay nods. Soon they are in Banapur and Ajay calls Sabal. "We are here Sabal. How can we help?" "Damn it. Keep your heads down and save whoever you can. I'm not far, I'll be there soon with help." Sabal ends the call and the duo moves to help people of Banapur. Once they are there Ajay gets an idea. "Jess take the left side of the village. I will take the right side." Jessica nods and goes to the left while Ajay moves to right. They manage to kill reinforcements and most of the soldiers. Then one of the members of the Golden Path notices where the soldiers are heading. "I see soldiers heading for the Community Pucca." "That's where we put Bhadra. Somebody needs to get her out." Sabal says. Then a female voice informs something. "I'm close, I will get her out!" Jessica says as she runs to Bhadra. "Jessica! Wait!" Ajay tries to say but Jessica is already on her way to Bhadra. She jumps into the building and looks for her. "Bhadra! Bhadra where are you!" Jessica shouts but no response comes . She moves downstairs and finds Bhadra unconscious. Meanwhile Ajay arrives in front of the houses and shouts. "Jessica!" Meanwhile Sabal and Amita arrive to the scene. Back inside Jessica throws Bhadra over her shoulder and with full speed breaks the door open. She falls to the ground with Bhadra close by. Ajay runs to Jessica and helps her up while Amita helps Bhadra. "I'm all right Ajay." Says Jessica, little bit out of breath. Sabal was standing next to Ajay. "The people need to see her. It'll comfort them." Amita turns around on him. "She's just a child, Sabal and she's terrified. I'll take her home and then we'll worry about the people. Okay?" Bhadra turns to look on Jessica and runs to hug her. "Thank you." Jessica returns the hug. "You're okay now. Everything is alright." She is moved away by Amita, who is now angry. "This is what we get for rescuing Ajay and Jessica. We hit Paul's house, he slaughters a village." Sabal looks guilty. "This isn't on Ajay or Jessica, it's on me, but we can't worry about that now. They took the outpost and they have hostages." Sabal turns to go away and Amita looks his way. "Fine. The outpost first. Without it, we're cut off from the others. Come." With that she goes away with Bhadra. Ajay turns to look at Jessica. "Why did you do it? Why do you have to be so careless!" Jessica is confused by Ajay behavior. "What do you mean ? I did the right thing! You would have done the same!" Ajay just sighs and says. "Look I made a promise to your dad. That I will protect you." "Well I do appreciate the concern but I can take care of myself." Before Ajay can respond Sabal calls. "Ajay, Jessica we need to talk." "Sabal? What is it?" Asks Ajay with curiosity. "I'm needed in Banapur and Amita is focused on the outpost, so it's up to you two to help with the hostages. I know it's a lot to ask, but they must be rescued before we take back the outpost." Jessica decides to cut him off. "But Amita said-" Sabal continues. "The outpost IS important, but our top priority should be the lives of those hostages. The people of Kyrat depend on the Golden Path for protection. We cannot let them down. Rescue the hostages Ajay, Jessica." And he ends the call. "Well let's go liberate those hostages." Jessica moved to find a quad bike or car but Ajay stopped her. "The conversation is not over." Jessica turned around and looked at him. "It is actually." She frowned. "We don't have time for this, let's go!" So without the word they moved to a quad bike and rode to the hostages.
A/N: I decided to add Jessica to King Min's Kyrat just for fun so here is her description.
