Chapter Seventy-Six-Testing the Bond

Rey sat in her quarters alone and took in a deep breath. She could do this. Of course, she could. Hadn't she been doing it since the day she had been born? She took in another deep breath to steady her nerves and reached out to Ben through their shared connection in the Force.

For a moment nothing happened, her brow furrowed hard in concentration as she pushed her awareness out into the void. And then she looked up and he was there. Her eyes widened slightly in triumph as Ben manifested right in front of her. He was so real, she was sure if she just reached out with her hand that she could touch his handsome face, his gloriously thick black hair. She didn't act on those impulses, instead, she sat still, admiring his face and physique covertly.

Ben was staring back at her, a slight smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "You know I can tell everything you're thinking."

Rey's cheeks were kissed pink like a rose, but she didn't rise to his bait. She smiled coyly. "A man like you is built to be admired." She teased him.

Now it was Ben's turn to flush. He shifted awkwardly, giving her a knowing look. "Only in your imagination." He denied.

Rey smirked. "You think I am the only one who admires you, Ben Solo?" She said archly. "You have quite the fan base in the Resistance."

"And you don't?" Ben countered with a small smile.

"They're just boys." Rey shrugged dismissively. "I like real men." She put the emphasis on real and moistened her lips with the tip of her tongue, waggling her eyebrows playfully.

Ben burst into rare peals of laughter. His laughter was the soundtrack to Rey's soul, it made her heart dance within, his happy expressions of joy elevating her own. "Are you trying to flirt with me, Rey?"

"Maybe. Is it working?"

Ben was staring at her. He came closer, his dark eyes smouldering with intent.

"You aren't really here – you can't touch me." Rey challenged him. "I'm safe."

"I don't think so." Ben said huskily. He came within a meter or two of her, and she wondered what would happen if they did try to reach out and touch one another.

In the past, when she used to appear to him as a child, they had actually interacted physically – he could pick her up, hold her hand. She remembered the night at the jedi temple when he had shown her the stars and pointed out the names of the different constellations. It seemed like a life time ago. In their young innocence about their bond, their interactions had come so easily. Now it was proving a challenge to replicate.

Rey hadn't expressed her thoughts aloud, but Ben heard them anyway. "I don't know what changed." He mused. "You were only five years old when I rescued you from Jakku – maybe we've just forgotten how."

"It came so naturally." Rey pondered thoughtfully. "And then when were around each other almost daily, we didn't need to utilise it in the same way."

"Or maybe our connection has merely adapted over time. As we grow and change, so has the bond." Ben suggested.

"That would make sense that it's adapted to our changing circumstances." Rey agreed.

They had been practising for days, testing the limits of their Dyad bond and what they could do with it. Ben was off world now, while Rey remained on Ajan Kloss, sitting outside in the sun. The harder they worked on testing their connection, the more raw and powerful it became. Rey compared it to touching a live wire in the wreckage of a starship.

Rey sat cross-legged, eyes closed and concentrating hard. She didn't remember rising off the ground, but was vaguely aware that, somehow, she had ended up floating. She had done it a few times in the past when utilising the Force. The Force flowed through her, buoyed her, connected her to everything, connected her to Ben. She opened her eyes and found Ben right there – floating off the ground just as she was. They were completely mirroring one another.

At the sight of him Rey felt relief flood through her. "Where are you right now?" She asked.

"Orbiting Naboo." Ben revealed. "Tai and Hennix are on the surface negotiating for more supplies. They'll be back soon."

Rey let out a small sigh of defeat. She could see Ben clearly, but still couldn't see his surroundings. She knew he was on the Millennium Falcon, but the old freighter remained out of her reach. "I can still only see you."

"Same." Ben revealed. "Though, for me, it's always been that way. When you used to appear to me as a child, I only ever saw you."

Rey's brow furrowed as she searched her memory of how things used to be from her childish perspective, but they remained elusive and out of reach. "You taught me so many things, you showed me so many things. I didn't just see you back then, I saw your surroundings. I was right there in the moment with you."

Ben shared her frustration. "You stepped from your world into mine so easily when you were a small child. The passage in that old text mentioned Dyad's having the ability to pass solid objects to one another through the Force, regardless of the distance. It's like, back then, you had the ability to pass physically through the Force yourself…." His voice tailed off.

"I crossed the galaxy to be with you." Rey said fervently. "I'd do it again."

"Maybe you still can." Ben murmured. He maintained eye-contact with her, his expression turning eager.

Rey could sense his budding excitement through their bond. Not just his excitement, but his faith that she was still capable of such an epic feat. His confidence in her bolstered hers. She stared into his eyes, they were so different in moments like these, softer than she knew eyes could be. Then he said the words she needed to hear.

"You can do this, Rey. You're not alone. I'm here."

Rey nodded, taking in his face and branding it into her memory, knowing he was the medication she needed to survive the next few minutes. She watched as he tentatively raised his hand toward hers. She was expecting their hands to go through one another and wondered if she would feel it in the Force somehow. But to her elation their fingertips actually brushed. She grasped his hand, jolted by the contact, and saw that the same shock had gone through him.

Rey was so lost in Ben's eyes that she was totally unaware of anything else around her. The atmosphere was electric. The Force swirled around her, intensifying in strength. Pebbles and small boulders rose from the ground and hovered around her, like a field of asteroids orbiting their sun. She could feel everything. See everything. The lush rain forest moon of Ajan Kloss was teeming with life. She could feel every tree and fern, every reptile and insect. A few strides away in a hidden den, a small furry creature groomed its litter of four kits.

"Ben?" She whispered in awe.

"Come to me, Rey," came Ben's voice, deep and soothing as always. "Our connection is becoming stronger. Can you feel it?"

"Yes." Rey breathed, her excitement mounting.

Rey inhaled deeply through her nose as Ben grasped her hand. His grip was fiercely strong, almost manic in its intensity. She felt a sharp jolt ripple through her body. Her hazel eyes opened wide as she stared into his. She tried to drop her gaze to their joined hands, but her eyes were unable to leave Ben's face. Air rushed around her face, the atmosphere around her swirled with light and dark shadows. Her heart thrummed loudly in her chest. Rey was terrified as she watched the world fade around her. The lush rainforest, the heat – it all disintegrated. The only solid thing was Ben. His face was strong and defined, his handsome features seemingly moulded from granite. His dark eyebrows sloped down in a serious expression. His strong hand held hers as he stared deep into her eyes.

Time stopped.

It remained suspended for a few precious seconds.

Time started again…

Rey gasped as she tumbled right into Ben's arms. His body was warm and toned as he hugged her to him. His lips brushed against her ear as he spoke her name. "Rey."

Despite Ben's hidden doubts, it had worked. Rey was there, on the Millennium Falcon, resting securely in his arms. It was a miracle. In the darkness of his quarters on the Falcon he held her against him. Holding her close felt like a little touch of heaven. He felt Rey's hand move around his middle, warm and soft.

Then he was kissing her, deeply, passionately. A kiss of exultation, of celebration, of oneness, of love. His kisses made Rey feel like she was falling, even though she was already lying down.
