Mirabel's eyes widened as she looked at her cousin in shock. She immediately stood up and so did Dolores. She looked around a little bit, trying to comprehend what her cousin had just told her. The only emotion she felt was shock. How could this happen? How could she let it happen?

"Uh…" Mirabel didn't know what to think. "How…how do you…figure that?" Mirabel already knew the answer to that question. Dolores was always the first to know when someone in the family was pregnant.

"Mira, I think you know," Dolores walked up to Mirabel and grabbed her hand. She whispered, "I can hear the heartbeat."

Mirabel continued to just look at her in shock. She looked down at her stomach and put her hand over it. "Oh no," She turned around and ran her hands through her hair. "This can't be happening. This cannot be happening." She kept her hands on her head and turned back to Dolores. "What am I going to do?"

"We'll figure it out. But in the mean time…" She really didn't want to pry, but she needed to know. "I know it's not really any of my business. You're a grown woman. I just want to make sure…everything is okay. Was this…consensual? A one-time thing? An all-the-time thing?"

Mirabel took a shaky breath and sat on the floor. Dolores joined her. "It was consensual. And it was also a one-time thing. Do you remember the fight him and I had? The one after we had dinner with his friends?" Dolores nodded. "A week before that was the one and only time it happened."

Mirabel was suddenly brought back to that night. It had been a normal day so far. They had eaten lunch in town and were hanging out at his house afterwards. They were just talking and laughing when they started to kiss. Things immediately heated up. They went to the bedroom. Then the clothes came off. As he was kissing her neck, he pulled away and asked, "Are you sure?"

She nodded. "I'm very sure."

It was her first time and she remembered it all too well.

"Mirabel," said Dolores and rubbed her hands on her face. "How could you not think this was a possibility? Did it even cross your mind?"

"I mean…for a brief second I thought about it, but I figured I didn't have to worry about it. It took Isa and Luis months of trying to get Mateo. And this was my first time! I barely knew what I was doing."

"You knew enough," muttered Dolores.

Mirabel rolled her eyes, ignoring that comment. "I'm sorry, okay? I was stupid." She started to get tears in her eyes. "Seriously, what am I going to do? What is everyone going to think of me? My mama is going to be so disappointed in me." She could already see that look of disappointment on her mom's face and it broke her heart. "How am I supposed to be a mom?" She obviously knew all about babies and kids and how to take care of them, but the idea of having her own was terrifying.

"You have been amazing with kids since Antonio was born. Mira, you were 10 years old, but from the moment he was born, you were so good with him. And you're also so good with my babies and with Mateo. You will be okay. And whatever everyone's initial reaction will be, you need to remember one thing." Dolores grabbed Mirabel's hand and squeezed it. "We will all be here for you. We will support you. We all love you and this is not going to change that." She looked down at Mirabel's belly and slowly put her hand on it. The heartbeat was nice and strong. "And we will love this baby."

Mirabel smiled widely at Dolores. "Thank you, Dolores. That really means a lot to me."

"Of course," Dolores stood up and then held out a hand for Mirabel to stand up as well. She grabbed it and stood up. "We really should get back to breakfast before anyone suspects anything suspicious."

"You're right. Should I…tell everyone?" Her heart started beating really fast.

"Only if you want to, but I think that would be super overwhelming. We have a huge family and I think you should start small. Maybe tell your mom first. And you know you will need to tell…"

Mirabel groaned. "Don't remind me."

"So for now, let's just go and finish breakfast and then go from there. Alright?"

"Okay,"

The girls headed back to the table and set down in their original seats. "Are you okay, mi vida?" said Julieta. "I'm so sorry you're not feeling good."

Mirabel took a deep breath. She already felt like she was lying to her. "I'm okay." She looked at her food and it still didn't look appetizing. She knew she had to eat, so she forced herself to eat half of it. It really did make her feel better and the nausea was now completely gone.

After breakfast, Mirabel lingered in the kitchen longer than usual. Julieta was always the last one out of the kitchen, but Mirabel stayed back with her. Since they were alone, Mirabel thought now was as good a time as any to share her secret with her mom.

Julieta could tell something was up with her daughter. She didn't seem sad like she had the past few weeks, but she looked anxious about something. She was being very quiet and kept looking around. She also thought it was odd that she was staying in the kitchen with her. "Is there something on your mind?"

Mirabel took a shaky breath and nodded. "Yes,"

"Do you want to talk about it?"

Mirabel nodded again.

"Okay," Julieta wiped off the last of the counter and turned to Mirabel. "I'm all ears."

"Okay…here goes nothing," She took another deep breath. It was the only thing keeping her even remotely calm. "Mama…I'm so sorry…you're going to hate me."

"There is nothing you could ever do that would make me hate you."

She was silent for a moment before speaking. "I don't have a stomach bug."

Julieta was confused. "Um…okay? Then…what's wrong?"

"Mama…Dolores heard something at breakfast."

"That's like saying Pepa made it rain or Antonio talked to a bird. You're not giving me much to go on."

Mirabel groaned. She really didn't want to have to say the words. "She heard…a heartbeat, Mama. An extra heartbeat."

It only took a moment for Julieta to figure it now. Her eyes widened and she gasped. "Mira…you don't mean…"

Mirabel nodded and looked at the ground. "I'm sorry," she said quietly.

Julieta rubbed her hands over her face and looked around for a moment. She was in complete and utter shock. She didn't know how to comprehend what she had just heard. "Mirabel. What…I mean, how…"

"I think you know how."

"Please don't," said Julieta sternly. "I never should have let you date him. I never liked the age difference and I never liked the fact that you would hang out at his house. I want to blame myself, but Mirabel. You're smarter than this. You're not even married. You barely dated for 4 months. I just can't believe this."

And there it was – the disappointment. Mirabel looked at the ground with tears in her eyes. She tried to say something, but her throat was closing up. She absolutely hated to upset her mom. Her mom was the kindest person she'd ever met in her life and she felt like she betrayed her. No one in the family had a baby before marriage. Never. Until now. "It wasn't something we planned."

"Oh, it never is, is it? How often did it happen? Everyday? Every other day?"

"No! No, it was nothing like that. It was just a one-time thing…3 weeks before we broke up." A few tears rolled down her cheeks. "We were hanging out at his house and we were just talking and it just happened. Mama, please, I'm so sorry. I hate that I disappointed you. I never thought this would happen."

"You never thought this would happen? Mirabel…how could it not cross your mind? How could you not stop and think about the consequences of your actions?"

"Mama, I'm sorry, okay? It did cross my mind briefly, but I didn't think it was something I had to worry about. All I know is that I was in love and I was with the man I loved and everything was perfect. I thought he would be the man I'd end up marrying, so I didn't think it was a big deal. But, nope, that's not how it happened. He ended things and now I get to be the one to deal with this." All the memories from the good times with Javi flooded her mind and it was almost too much to take. "I'm sorry," She couldn't face her mom anymore, so she ran around Julieta and up the stairs and into her room.

She collapsed on her bed and cried.

It was 10 minutes later when someone knocked on her door. She had stopped crying, but she was still lying there and not moving. "I don't want to talk."

"Mirabel, we need to." It was her mom.

"I'm not interested in hearing you tell me how stupid I am." The door opened and in walked both of her parents. Mirabel rolled her eyes. "Nice. Now I get to hear both of my parents tell me how stupid I am." She set up in her bed and crossed her arms.

"That's not what we're here to do." said Julieta. She sat on the edge of the bed and Agustin sat on the other side of her.

Mirabel looked at her dad with sad eyes. "I'm sorry, Papa."

He gave her a soft smile and patted her on the leg. "I know,"

"Mirabel," said Julieta. "We could ground you and punish you, but really…what good is it going to do? It's already happened. There's nothing we can do to change it. Also, you're 21 years old. You are an adult. You can make your own decisions. I just wish you had waited…to make this decision."

"You and me both,"

"But…we are here now." Julieta smiled. "And you're going to have a baby. And it will change everything. I'm obviously not going to force you to be with Javi just because you will have a baby together, but you do have to tell him. And you have to give him the option to be a part of this baby's life. We can hope that he'll want to be here to help out, but that does not mean you have to get back in a relationship with him." She grabbed Mirabel's hand. "Being a mom means making these tough decisions and doing things you don't want to do. I'm sure the thought of seeing Javi is not pleasant, but you have to do it. You have to think about what is best for your baby."

"Yeah, it sucks," She took a deep breath. "Can I just stay in my room today and go tell him tomorrow?"

"If that's what you want to do. But you have to tell him very soon."

"I will. I'm just not up for it today."

"We understand," Both of her parents stood up and they took turns giving her a kiss on the head and saying they loved her before leaving the room.

Mirabel spent the day telling her other family members her news. Abuela had a very similar reaction to Julieta and was ultimately worried about what the people in the Encanto would think. But she supported Mirabel and told her she'd be there for her and the baby. Her sisters were excited and couldn't wait to get a new niece or nephew. Camilo was excited and very happy for her. Antonio was so excited he jumped up and down and gave her a huge hug. Bruno was shocked, but also very happy for her and very supportive. Felix and Pepa were very happy and told Mirabel something shocking.

"You know," Pepa glanced over at Felix and then looked back at Mirabel. "I'm not condoning sex before marriage, but…" She wiggled her eyes a little and smiled at Mirabel. "We're guilty."

Mirabel's eyes widened. "Whoa. Are you serious? Does Abuela know?"

"Oh no! And she will never know. Julieta and Bruno know, as well as Dolores, but they have been sworn to secrecy. Now, I didn't get pregnant until after we were married, but…I do understand being in that situation and being so in love that you just can't wait anymore." She smiled sympathetically at Mirabel and put her hand on her shoulder. "And I can fully understand why you were so heartbroken with the way things ended. I'm sure you were already in love before things happened, but being that intimate with someone and then having it come crashing down makes it much worse."

"It does," Mirabel had to take a few deep breaths to keep from crying. "Now I have to go tell the man that broke my heart he will be a dad and somehow keep my composure."
