Chapter 2: First Steps

Feeling a light strike my face was not the most ideal way to wake up, especially for a man like me who had lived all his life with his windows drawn, but it served as a perfect alarm clock nonetheless. I must have forgotten to close my windows last night, but it certainly wasn't even on the list of my priorities.

Living in a whole new world after I had died tended to make me forget the small details, and I would have to work on fixing that. It was always the small details that tended to become the biggest issues after all.

Pulling myself out of bed, I twisted my body and felt my bones pop under the stress. I needed to get ready for the day, it wouldn't do good for me to start things off in the village with a show of bad work ethic.

Luckily, the bags Yu, or rather myself, had carried with him on his trip held all my living essentials. I took a change of clothes and a toothbrush and got busy.

Not wanting to waste time getting ready, in a matter of minutes I had already started to dry myself after stepping out of a quick shower. I silently thanked whoever was responsible for hot water in the Naruto world and pondered on how I would be paying for utilities.

It's something that wasn't mentioned in canon, but my innate memories as Yu told me that villages paid for those types of things with the heavy taxes they exerted on the villagers. With that in mind, I considered the girl I had a drink with last night.

Her business must be getting the short end of the stick. Restaurants tended to operate on margins back in my old world, and I imagined it wasn't different here. Once you added heavy taxes into the mix, I could easily see being a business owner to be a stressful experience.

I would have to see about helping out her business. I was sure that there was something I could do for her, and hopefully, my actions would result in plenty of points.

From what I had managed to gather, money was not necessarily tight around the village, and they were even going through a growing phase after the war. If there was money to go around, and the food was good, then what was the bottleneck? It was time.

Everybody seemed to be busy when I had arrived, there was so much buzzing activity that even I could see that people were not having a whole lot of extra time to relax. So rather than go out for lunch and waste time at a restaurant, people were likely opting to instead eat meals at their workplace.

The best way to adapt to such a market would be to add in a unique service that would allow for time constraints to be ignored. Rather than having customers come down to the stand to eat, they would be more likely to order ramen if it would be delivered at an agreed time. And since money was not an issue, I bet they would even do so for an extra fee to deal with delivery.

Customers would simply have to show up to the stand one day and schedule the location and time for their meals to be delivered. With the help of promotions and bundles, Ayame could probably lock in customers for week-long deals.

All she would need is to hire some people to deliver food, and they would be paid in commissions. Luckily there was no minimum wage in the Naruto world. It was likely to work, but there was no way I could approach Ayame with this idea right now.

It would be one thing if a person she trusted came to her with this idea, but I was practically a stranger. I would have to gain more of her trust before I could do anything to help her.

A sudden knock on my door snapped me out of my thoughts. I could already guess who was behind the door.

Before opening the door, I decided to take a quick peek at the new daily items in the store. I was hoping to see something useful. If not then I would seriously consider going for some of the monthly items, though they were very expensive.

Items that increase stats? Though for the price I am not sure if they are worth it. Still depending on how stat levels work, maybe this will be useful in the future. Either way, I will rather wait to see if something better comes up.

Opening the door I was greeted by a smiling Shizune.

"Good morning Yu, sorry for intruding so early in the morning," she said with a slight cheer, "I just wanted to guide you to the first place where you'll have to get started, as your guide I have to make sure that you are not getting lost in our village."

That's correct. I was meant to inspect and design safety seals for one location per week. Shizune, as my guide, was meant to introduce me to these places, and I was meant to take things from there. Honestly, I was wanted to have a little more control over where I was meant to work.

Not that I cared about my work, but because this would be the perfect excuse to talk to potential heroines without looking like a creeper. Still, having Shizune introduce me to places would give me credibility so there was some upside to it.

"Are you ready to head out?"

Nodding at her question, I stepped out of my house while carrying my bag of materials, "Of course, please show me where I should start."

She responded with her own nod and headed out into the streets with silent steps. I followed her by her side and took the time to observe the village and the villagers. Aside from key locations from the show, I had never looked at a map of the village so mainly everything I saw was a new sight.

Though, admittedly, there wasn't much to see.

The locations themselves reminded me of the markets I had visited in my past life. Everything was rather mundane, and this forced me to remember that the ninja world seen in the show is only one aspect of the real thing.

For the most part, stores simply sold food and clothing, some were advertising services like massages and haircuts, but there was nothing that screamed ninja world.

Occasionally I would catch a blur of motion on the roofs, which I assumed were ninjas going to and from the Hokage building.

"Enjoying the village's atmosphere?" Shizune pulled me out of my thoughts. She was eyeing me as I had gotten lost in my thoughts.

"Sorry, this is just so different from the Land of Spring, it's very exciting," I said while making eye contact, "I am also thinking about getting started with work."

She beamed at the small praise I gave to the village. It seemed that talking good about the village was an easy way to earn brownie points. It wasn't unexpected as patriotism in the show seemed to be a big part of the characters' motivation. The Will of Fire and all that.

"I heard that you are a very experienced seal master," she continued while staring at me, "It's very impressive considering your young age, how did you learn?"

I did remember, however the background itself wasn't very solid. It couldn't be helped considering that I wasn't part of the world, and instead, my existence in this place was generated by the thing I had seen in the void.

Still, I was innately certain that no one would question my story, despite how vague it was.

"Oh, I actually learned from wandering seals master that took me as his apprentice when I was a small boy. I learned everything he could teach me and then my master left without a word to continue his drifter lifestyle. It's honestly not that interesting, and although I do have the self-awareness to know that I am skilled, I didn't think that a big village like the Village Hidden in the Leaves would want my services. Did something happen?"

I had a vague understanding that my presence here was also the work of the thing that sent me here, but I would still appreciate a more in-depth explanation.

Shizune paused as she considered my words, "Right, well after the war we lost a lot of our sealing masters when the central command was blown up. Naturally, there are some individuals that can create seals in the village, but not with sufficient skill to create seals for the village's security," she continued with a sad tone.

It's easy to forget that people died in the 4th Ninja War since only Neji died in the show, but there was plenty of fodder that was killed through the whole ordeal. A lot of people must be grieving still.

"Sorry for talking about a sore subject," I apologized with sincerity.

Shizune shook her head at my words, "Don't apologize, it's understandable that you would be curious about why you were employed."

Our conversation settled into a comfortable silence as we continued to walk down the lively streets of the village. Soon, however, we arrived at our destination. A place I didn't recognize.

"This is the shop where you will begin to work," Shizune spoke as she opened the door to a rather mundane shop.

I was secretly thankful that it wasn't the Yamanaka Flower shop or anywhere would I would interact with a main character. I wanted to get Ayame's route done before I got swapped with other targets.

Shizune introduced me to the old shopkeeper and after a quick explanation of what I would be doing in the shop, she left me to my own devices.

"Time to put those innate skills to the test," I whispered to myself.

It was one thing to know that I was a skilled seals master, and it was a whole other thing to actually start creating and applying seals. Still, this was a dating sim game in a world created to test out the abilities of the system. Realistically there would be no emphasis on other aspects of the game.

With that hope in mind, I began to create the seals needed to keep uninvited intruders outside the shop.

Still, as soon as I began something strange began to occur within me. A feeling of darkness covered my vision and my mind went blank. An inexplicable sensation that time was flowing and my body was moving was passed into my very being, but just as quickly as the weird feeling came, it disappeared. I was back in my body and things time resumed its normal march.

"What was that?" I couldn't help but let out the question.

"Oh, are you finally done, sonny? I was wondering when you would snap out of your trance. It looks like once you get to work there is no distracting you," the familiar voice of the shopkeeper came from my side.

I looked at the papers below me and saw sealing marks, similar to what I had seen in canon. I had somehow finished the work for the entire building in the blink of an eye.

[+3 Trustworthiness, +3 Creativity]

I immediately understood what had happened.

"Sorry, people tell me I zone out the world when I get started on my work. The good thing is that I completely finished so I'll be out of your hair now, thanks for having me," I kindly responded to the old lady's question.

I quickly packed up my things and made my way out into the street to see the sun. Unsurprisingly, the sun seemed to indicate that it was the afternoon hours, a few hours from the morning when I had started to work.

It was a rather common game mechanic where things that were unimportant to the story would be skipped with a dark screen and at the end, you would be rewarded with stats or money. Usually, this involved going to the gym to gain strength or the library for intelligence, but I was familiar with games that used this type of thing.

I wasn't sure how I felt about it. On one hand, I am losing hours of the day, on the other hand, it does stop me from being bored at work and possibly other activities that would lose their luster after being done dozens of times.

At the end of the day, it was a game mechanic set up by the system so I doubted that I would even get a say in it. I might as well abuse the hell out of it for now.

It was still too early to go see Ayame, and I wanted to spend that time looking for a way to increase my other stats. I needed a lot more stat points if I was going to go after people like Tsunade who had stat requirements in the 40s. And she was only A rank, which granted is very high but not the highest grade possible either.

I needed to find a way to level up my emotional charm as well as my charisma since I have a pretty good idea of how to go about leveling up everything else. Those two stats would likely be the hardest to level up.

For now, I wanted to find a gym I could join. If that didn't work then I would just try working out at home.

Another thing to consider was how I was already done with the work that was meant to take me a whole week. I would have to talk with Shizune about what to do next. Under normal circumstances, I would simply use the extra time to laze about, but the more things I managed to do, the better off I would be. I'll think about how to spin this to the most advantage I can get.

As I continued my search for a gym, something caught my eye.

Dark-blue waist-long hair flickered in my vision. There she was, wearing a light lavender, sleeveless kimono-style blouse, which was tied with a dark purple obi around her waist. A pair of short dark navy shorts with thigh-high stockings, and a pair of black high-heeled boots.

Hinata Hyuga.

[Hinata Hyuga]

[Formerly the heiress of the Hyūga clan, she lost the position upon being deemed unsuited for the responsibilities of leading the clan. She has since shown her worth through her efforts in the 4th Great Ninja War. Despite her lacking qualities to be a clan leader, she possesses remarkable skills as a ninja. Is deeply in love with Naruto Uzumaki, though her feelings have not been returned.]

[Status]

Stance: Neutral

Love: 0

Trust: 5

Lust: 0

[Requirements]

Physical Charm: 5

Emotional Charm: 65

Kindness: 65

Charisma: 50

[Effects]

[True Love: Holds true love for an individual. Any Love stat gain will be reduced by 4 points.]

[Crestfallen: Has had her confession ignored for a long time. Any Love stat gain will be increased by +1.]

[Difficulty Rating: S]

Shit, that looks rough. The stats themselves are way beyond what I can currently achieve, even if I was maxed out. I will need to buy that permanent upgrade before I can start her route, not to mention those effects. True Love is pretty self-explanatory and I was expecting something like that already.

What surprised me was Crestfallen, though I understood what it meant. Since it had been a few months since the end of the war, then that meant that it had been a year and some months since Hinata confessed to Naruto during the Pain arc.

I can't imagine having the confession of your true feelings being ignored for a whole year. Especially since she did that while thinking she would die. It would be different if Naruto told her that she needed time to think, but he never mentions her confession until The Last. And that movie takes place nearly two years after the Pain arc.

It's not much but it will reduce the Love points I lose from -4 to -3, which is something. Either way, she is way out of my league for now.

I continue to head the way I was going while ignoring Hinata.

To my surprise, I found a self-service gym soon after.

The small building was an open floor with gym equipment lying around. At the entrance, a small box displayed a sign that instructed customers to pay once per day when using the gym.

The fee was very small so I didn't mind, not wanting to fall prey to some hidden security system, so I paid and went inside.

Time to test things out.

If things worked out, I would be done in time to get dinner with Ayame.

I approached a dumbbell and took a deep breath, praying this worked. I picked it up.

The moment I lifted the dumbbell off the ground the world began to fade around me in a similar fashion to when I started to work. Not fighting the sensation this time, I let it take over my body.

In the blink of an eye, I return to my body and I feel the passage of time.

[+3 Physical Charm]

Just as I suspected, working out will result in Physical Charm stat points.

Setting the dumbbells down, I grab a nearby towel and wipe off my sweat. I need to be presentable when I meet Ayame, so I decide to take a quick shower and change clothes back at home.

Luckily my home isn't too far away, and Ichiraku isn't either.

Making sure I don't smell of sweat, I quickly head out to go have dinner.

Once again greeted by the nightlife of the village, I start to ponder on what my next move should be as I head on over to Ayame. There was something just bugging me about my current progress, even though it was only my second day here. I felt as I could be going much faster with some kind of method.

It was a bad habit from when I used to play video games in my past life. No matter what kind of game I was playing, I would always want to know the fastest method to level up and get money. I would use everything available in the game to gain an edge, though I never cheated with hacks or anything like that.

There had to be something I was missing, but I just didn't know what to do aside from waiting for a useful item to pop out in the store. That was the main reason I was holding out on buying anything. Hopefully, I would be able to get even more LP from Ayame this time.

500 LP for a single night wasn't bad. In ten days I would be able to buy an item from the monthly rotation.

I pushed those thoughts aside as I arrived at my destination.

"One house special please!" I let out a cheerful voice as I entered the small ramen stand. Noticing there weren't any customers, I wanted to try and start things off with a bit of a smile.

Ayame's face lit up as she turned from the kitchen to face me, I was already feeling kinda bad that her business wasn't doing too well and now she looks at me like I'm the best thing to happen to her all day.

"You're back," her tone held some doubt, "For a second I thought that you would forget your promise, Yu."

I give her a devilish grin to emphasize the incoming sarcasm, "I almost didn't come, but when I imagined you having to spend your time at work without my grand charm, I felt a little bad. So here I am," I joked as I took a seat.

"Oh please, I barely know you and you are already becoming annoying," she spat back, "As if I would miss you already," her words were betrayed by her smiling face.

"Ouch, I just wanted some ramen, you know?"

She turns around and starts working on my bowl, "Please, if you didn't make that promise I bet you would already be eating at home."

"And miss out on this banter? No way, plus the ramen is really delicious," I say while she's still cooking my meal, "It doesn't hurt that they got cute cooks either."

[+1 Emotional Charm]

"If you think that, you should see my dad," she jokes, seemingly unphased by my compliment. If it wasn't for the system notification, I would probably believe it had no effect on her.

"Well, I think I'll be alright without that," I say as she brings me my bowl of ramen. Taking a deep breath of the savory aroma, I start on my meal making sure I put as much happiness as I can. I need to earn any goodwill from Ayame so I'm pulling out all the stops.

That being the case, I am pretty sure that I have Ayame all figured out by now. It's not that I have some type of supernatural power for this type of thing, though I suppose the system could count. But even before, in my old life, I was able to read people and analyze what they were truly like. I had used this in the past to gain friendships, girlfriends, jobs, and anything else I could take. I guess I was a people person.

Ayame lived a dull life, and she had been living this type of life since she was young. Ichiraku played a big role in this development. This was why she was weak to compliments, even the ones that weren't all that subtle or great. It was because she had been neglected in certain aspects.

The small talk and banter that we had over the course of my meal were enough to bring her mood up significantly, and after I had finished my rather large ramen bowl, I had accumulated a few stat points.

[+2 Ayame Love, +2 Ayame Trust, +1 Ayame Lust, +2 Emotional Charm]

[Ayame Koziko Stance Modified: Neutral converted to Crush]

[Stances: A Heroine's stance dictates how they feel towards you. Different Stances have different effects and the Neutral Stance has none.]

[Crush: The seed of love has been planted in this Heroine. +1 to any Heroine stat on any gain.]

Luckily by now, other customers have shown up so I managed to read the new text displayed by the system. I was starting to wonder what stances would, so I guess that answers that question.

Still, I wasn't sure what had triggered the change. It could have been the stat changes or something related to time spent together. In the worst-case scenario, it would be hidden parameters that the system would not bother to tell me about.

There was still time before Ayame's shift would be over, and I doubted I could convince her to leave her shop early twice in a row. I would have to wait for her to be done, but that would not be until an hour more.

"So Ayame, are you busy after work?" I popped the question, if my intuition and the system were correct, she would agree to go with me after work.

She looked up from her kitchen at my question. Her eyes flickered around in clear thought, and for a moment I thought that she would refuse me but life came into her eyes as she found her answer, "No, I'm not busy. Actually, I was planning on closing down the shop a bit early already. Why are you asking?"

That had been more than what I was hoping for. I didn't think she would be willing to leave her shop early once again. Though the slow day didn't seem to bring many customers anyway, that probably helped her decision.

In dating sims, relationships and feelings tended to form much quicker than in real life. I couldn't help but wonder if a similar phenomenon was happening here. I didn't put too much thought into it, if it was something that would be helpful then I would not question it.

"Perfect, are you interested in going on a walk with me? I'm curious to see what your village has to offer, and I would prefer having a beautiful guide to show me all the cool spots rather than me getting lost in a dark alley. Feeling up to it?" I made sure to lay it on thick since I knew those types of compliments worked on her no problem.

She smiled at my proposal, "Yeah that sounds great, let me close up shop and we'll get going, alright?"

[Date Initiated with Ayame!]

I merely nodded and waited for her outside the stand. A few minutes later she stepped out without her bandana and uniform, "I'm ready!"

"Then I'll follow your lead," I moved to her side as she began to walk through the lively streets.

I didn't really have a date plan so I was just winging it. Despite this, I was fairly confident I could get an A rating over the B rating I got last time.

"So where are we headed? I am ready to take in the Hidden Leaf's culture," I nudged her arm with my elbow as I spoke. It was only a light tap but I needed to establish physical contact as soon as possible.

Her eyes looked up as she thought about my question, "To be honest, I'm not sure. I accepted to be your guide without thinking so I didn't plan out anything," she said with a hint of embarrassment.

True, even I had no plan. But I couldn't less us wander around aimlessly. That would make for an awkward date.

"Well for starters could you point me to a decent clothing store? I was planning on buying some clothes that are more suited for the village," I asked her absentmindedly.

Her eyes suddenly exploded with life at my words, and her whole body seemed to gain energy, "Are you planning on buying clothes!? I can show you tons of spots, what's your budget like?"

I could only stare at her with wide eyes. I honestly wasn't expecting such a response, but she seemed really keen on the idea of buying clothes. Even though we were talking about buying clothes for me rather than her.

"You seem excited about this, you realize I'm talking about buying clothes for me, right?" I teased her with a small grin.

She puffed her cheeks at my reply, "Yes, I know! But still, this is exciting!"

I shook my head at her and pulled out my wallet. Opening it up to show her the contents, "My budget is around this much."

Thankfully I had plenty of cash from my job and I was about to make even more from working for the village.

"T-that much? Are you sure?" she asked with a glimmer in her eyes.

Internally sighing, I nodded in affirmation.

"Perfect! I know just the place, and they are open until late, so maybe I could help you pick out some things?" She asked with clear hope in her voice.

I couldn't help but smile at her childish glee, "Sure, or actually, I would be really happy if you could help me pick things out."

"Oh, you won't regret it!"

Suddenly she grabbed my hand and began to pull me through the streets.

I was never a fan of going with a woman shopping for clothes. Not to play into the stereotype, but I could only gain opinions based on my own experiences. And unfortunately, I had never dated a woman who didn't spend hours trying on clothes, and Ayame seemed to fit the bill to a tee.

I didn't mind this time at all, after all, the more Ayame had fun on our date, the better the rating. Or so I theorized.

My logic was sound and I would test it out right here. It would be hard otherwise to find a metric to determine the rating of a date.

"Here we are!" she shouted in excitement, "Let me show you the men's section."

For the next hour, I was subjected to countless articles of clothing to try on, courtesy of Ayame. I tried my best to make it look like I was having as much fun as she was, though I didn't think she would notice even if I wasn't having fun.

Before she could go for another pair of pants for me to try out, I flipped the tables on her, "Wait, Ayame," she paused for the first time at my words.

"I think that this should be enough for me," she seemed to droop down at my words.

She looked at the pile of clothes that I had agreed to buy, and even she had to admit that it was enough clothes to last me the whole year I would be here.

"Oh, I suppose you're right," she seemed to be coming out of her trance, "Guess I went a bit overboard, sorry."

I gave her an evil smirk, "Oh don't worry about that Ayame, there is no need to apologize, after all, I'm about to get my revenge."

She looked at me confused, "What are you talking about?"

"Isn't it obvious? Since you made me try out so many things, it's only fair if I make you try out some things too, right?" I said with a predatory grin.

Ayame smiled, she seemed like she wanted to try out some clothes anyway. I had caught her looking at the woman's section when she thought I wasn't looking. I made a mental note to remember the exact things she had looked at.

"Oh, well I guess it's only fair."

"That's the spirit, wait here in the changing rooms, I'll be back in a minute."

She nodded and I quickly turned on my heel to go get the things she had looked at. Honestly, I wasn't very fashionable so if I had not seen her take a look at things, I would have no clue what to bring her.

Walking over the to woman's section, I ignored the stares of nearby women and picked up the items I saw Ayame looking at. I was a little surprised that she was interested in this style, but it wasn't unusual in the Naruto world.

Walking back I saw an obviously excited Ayame barely containing the joy on her face.

"Try this on," I said as I handed her the clothing I picked out.

I briefly saw her eyes widen as she took in what I had chosen but she quickly calmed herself, "Wait you want me to wear this? This isn't exactly my style, you know? Besides, I don't think this will even look good on me, right?"

Ayame was all but done in my eyes. I could see right through her. Pretending that she wasn't really interested in this style of clothing but then fishing for a complement to boost her confidence. I had seen this routine countless times in the past.

"Are you kidding me? You're going to look amazing with this, just trust me, alright? Besides, you don't have a choice. Did you forget that you put me through a lot more than this just now? You owe me at least one outfit."

She looked at the outfit I had picked out and seemed to think it over before she relented to my request, "Well when you put it like that, I guess I do sort of owe you, alright I'll try it out. Just don't laugh, okay?"

With those words, she headed into the dressing room where she began to change.

After a few minutes passed in silence, the figure of Ayame walked out of the dressing room with blushed cheeks. The outfit wasn't even all that extreme compared to what other characters in the show wore, but for Ayame who always seemed to cover up her body, it must have seemed like a huge step.

She was wearing a dark-blue crop top that exposed her midriff, and underneath that, she wore a fishnet shirt that covered her exposed belly. On her legs, she had a pair of form-fitting black shorts that reached just above her knees. Her normal sandals were replaced with a pair of black high-heeled boots.

I was prepared to see her look good in the outfit she had technically picked out herself, but this turned out rather well. I couldn't help but hold my gaze on her exposed legs and midriff, and Ayame noticed and grew even shyer.

"So? I bet I look silly, right?"

I could tell that she really was embarrassed by being seen, so I decided to put her out of her misery.

"Are you joking? I knew that you would look great in this, but this blew me away. I mean, you really look amazing with this, it really suits you."

[+4 Ayame Love, +4 Ayame Lust]

"No way, you're just saying that," she shyly replied without making eye contact.

I shook my head at her antics, but I did not relent, "No, I really mean it. Trying out so many clothes was worth it just for this Ayame."

"I guess I'll believe you," she finally relented.

Not wanting to get subject to more clothing, I decided to end our makeshift date, "Alright, let's get ready to pay, and don't forget to throw what you're wearing into the pile."

"Wait, you want to buy this for me? The items on this store are kind of pricey," she explained.

"It's fine, it's a thank you for showing me around town, just put it on the pile. We'll separate it after."

Not fighting me on the matter anymore, she went back to change and we soon were out of the store with several bags full of clothes. Well, it was mainly just me, and just one bag for her.

"I had a lot of fun today," Ayame said while holding her bad and looking down, "Thanks for the clothing too, I really appreciate it."

I waved her off, "Don't worry about it, I really did owe you for showing me around, plus it was fun for me too. See you tomorrow, Ayame."

She nodded enthusiastically and headed home while I continued to stick around. Mainly to read the popup in my vision.
